Android P 9.0 Samsung S8/S8+/S9/S9+ - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Welcome to the Thread. Please post the features that you would like Android P and Samsung to bring to your devices.

Absolutely! That's why I ditched S8+ and jumped to Pixel wagon. Didn't regret that for a single second. Especially since I already run P DP1 on my Pixel 2 XL...

Ι only care about security updates

Can't say what I want.. I only will say that I'm already disappointed by Samsung support so... We probably will get it the end of 2019/2020. Don't even really want to think about it.

This has been going on for years. Why did you buy non-Pixel phone then if update is your main concern?

I didn't know Samsung treat in such way the customers. I was htc user for years, and I hated Samsung till s8 and I couldn't take htc u11 so I got s8. HTC and the rest oems deliver big updates 3 months after comes out...And Samsung almost after a year. But I will know for the future. If after year this phone gets good development AOSP/TW I will stick with it. Look at note, they pay 2k for phone and Samsung treat them like sh!ts. So disappointed.

S8+ looked soooooo promising so I bought it - it was my Sammy device after S3 again....lol...
But I was dissapointed again. I hope that Project Treble will do some good for you guys.
After all: it a shiny piece of great hardware, but for me personally thats prity much it.

Huh, already talking about P when O hasn't been officially released in the U.S. Shoot, Samsung should just scrap O and focus on P now. Gotta luv Samsung!

People who decide to spend a lot of their hard worked money to buy top end phones (flagships), usually are of the following categories:
1. They need it for their work (for example Note series) in which case they really care about security updates (at least).
2. They are passionate about phones and really care about looks, ui, apps etc. in which case they really care about android updates, ui updates etc.
I would say that the biggest percentage falls in category No2.
A firmware update breaths new life into the phone. It makes you see the device as a new device, try to explore again all the features from the beginning, pleases your eyes and generally makes your interaction with the phone a brand new experience.
People falling into category No2, really really really want and care about updates. Especially if they have spent a lot of money to buy a flagship, they demand to be treated as premium members. So they expect to receive quickly and first new updates.
When you see other flagships, maybe half the price of your flagship or flagships of smaller companies than Samsung to get all the new updates fast, and you are still 2 or 3 updates behind, then this makes you very disappointed and you may lose your faith to Samsung.
From what I understand, this has driven a lot of people who were loyal fans and followers of Samsung, away from samsung phones.
Hope this will change with project treble, because when you lose a loyal client, it is very hard to get him back.

It's not supported and most likely never will. Google requires onl the new phones to support Project Treble

wifi calling on unlocked non branded devices.

i think we shouldn't jump on conclusions like that yet. Mostly because samsung always respects the update schedule, they always support their devices 2 years after launch which also means among the security patches etc ,two big updates. in this case it is oreo and p. so that means we should basically have the P update

Updates all the way! Even despite having annoying glitches

If you're just wanting security updates I would recommend to flah the U1 firmware. I did so on my Sprint S7 edge over a year ago and it's still getting security patches. Currently on May 2018. The phone is now over two years old.

lol... ya gotta love it.
In fairness, we have an Android Army of phones on a lot of carriers going up against the Iphone. Still, Jobs has a bellyache and is soiling his drawers.
**yawn**
Sooner or later, this was going to happen because ultimately "open" wins
Steve Jobs would be pretty pissed
and this is in the US only... Worldwide its surely a much bigger margin.
the one phone one provider isn't an argument because Apple and Steve choose this path so fair or not if the loss it's becuase the didn't play the game right.
What is unfair is the fact we have 3 major top of the line devices right now (driod, nexus, incred) and they have to release the iphone4 in a few months. If we hold a lead that month then the world is on its head and we are slaying the dragon. Lets hope the Evo puts a nail in that coffin!!!
Yeah, only the beginnig ...see asian market!.. but China only, should be enough to tripple this, as they start producing really low prized Android devices.
It just means that apples going to try and add more features than they originally planned to the new iphone. Will probably just take some elements from android and polish them.
I mean.. just look at that green bar there, Look how it climbs???
Up your ass Steve...

What could they possibly do to make their next iPhone better than Android?
Make it open-source? LOOOL
There's also the question of which group of users Windows Phone 7 will appeal to. If its Apple users, thats another problem for the iPhone

Thats the reason why android is doing so well because it can work on so many hardware devices. You can choose a phone with the hardware you need, in your price budget and still get android.
If the next iphone does this I will consider buying it:

Nothing deceptive or fanboyish about it at all. Android outsold Apple's iPhone. It's Apples fault for releasing the iPhone on only one network and offering pretty much the same phone for the last 2-3 years. People are bored with the iPhone and it's UI. Time to move on.

Hehe, sorry but I had to laugh
I knew Android was on the move & great to read the articles
1. Do keep in mind this time of year the Iphone rumors are in full tilt , many are holding off waiting for the "next" iphone.
2. Theres nothing "skewed" about it. ATT or one unit is not an excuse. Its what Apple has decided to do. Sure if iphone was avilable on VZ it may be a different story...but if Nexus One was subsidized and sold in stores itd be another story. Google and Apple have made there decisions these are the results. Theres no would or could....only is.
3. Incredible/Evo/N1+MTSide vs Iphone 4g.
Current and next quarter is what will count. It will be interesting to see if Iphone goes to VZ just how much advertising theyll put in between the incredible or iphone.
Doesnt matter what Iphone does the drones will buy it up.Theres enough uneducated sheep out there that still think iphone OS is the best so if it goes to VZ thatll be a monumental seller. I still think ATT got the ipad becuase VZ was getting the Iphone 4g as well.
Great news for Android but BB is darn impressive considering the ridiculous lack of good hardware. BB communications and "business" features are still killers. Android and Iphone just arent taking it serious enough. BB users would jump in a heartbeat if there email/txt/IM were as reliable and easy on either platform. BB users are much smarter than Iphone users IMO they want substance that isnt offered elsewhere.
Sprint/VZ and lazy Google would serve themselves well pumping out ad campaigns for there new phones. VZ ad campaign alone was the force behind the massive jump. Imagne if Sprint/Google would match that tv ad money.
Yep, don't count your chickens yet guys....
People who bought an iPhone about 6 months ago will need to buy another soon as they can't change their battery!!

I disagree. I think it say the opposite: The iPad going to ATT just shows that Apple and ATT are still partners and that nothing has changed.
There will be no Verizon iPhone. Not this year anyway.

Aria vs Captivate (newbie question)

Okay so...
I'm new to Android (and basically to smartphones in general...have a Blackjack II but no data plan with it).
I was wondering what everyone's opinions are on these phones (I know that the Captivate has not been released yet but for everyone who knows more about it that I do).
Things such as speed comparison, ease of use (for those who test drove the Captivate) , supposed battery life, availability of developer support for continued updates and/or custom ROMs, ease of root, carrier support, etc.
I want to know what phones has more advantages so that I don't get screwed over when it comes time to upgrade.
Please don't flame...not trying to start a fight or spam. Just need some help...feeling pretty lost
Well ease of use will be the same, they both run Android.
The difference is that Samsung's will be able to run 3.0, given the rumored requirements, the Aria cannot.
But everything else about the Captivate will be better. It's got an international version as well as four US versions, it should have more support than N1, probably.

more support then Nexus ? i hardly doubt that. considering that first OS leaks, 3-party roms, and official roms are for Nexus only
Since there are so many different versions of it, will all custom ROMs/root methods (whether it be the AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, International) be the same or will there be the headache of trying to find one that will work with my phone?
And I've heard complaints about Samsung's customer service....how is it compared to HTC? I've never used Samsung's customer service before and never owned an HTC before.

I would imagine that ROMS will be different because hardware is not 100% the same, although i might be mistaken.
as far as support goes: updates on HTC are pretty slow, I heard that Samsung will be even worth. It will probably get a quick update to 2.2 and thats it.....HTC phone support sucks, but at least you spend less then 1 minute on hold for a rep.
The only reason why HTC Nexus gets so much support, custom roms and updates, is because its a Google phone and its first in line for everything, its sort of "Developer Phone" thats not locked on anything which makes it easier to make ROMs.

Thanks for the response.
I guess that there wont be any true comparisons until it get released. I just hope that the Captivate lives up to the expections I have of it. Dont want it to be a complete disappointment.
Hopefully some decent custom ROMS and rooting techniques hit the forum soon. New to Android myself but my friends speak highly of these so its something I plan on doing if there is enough support for it on here. Aria has really good support here, and I hope the Captivate gets the same respect.

So the Galaxy S line definitely has the best hardware out on the market right now... The Aria is smooth in the UI, but a lot slower in graphics, computation, and every other way... The reason it is smooth is because it runs at a lower resolution... I am confident any variant of the Galaxy S will have a longer lifespan than any other android phone you buy right now... Samsung is putting a lot of eggs in this basket...

I'm not sure if the reason it is smooth is because it runs at a lower resolution, but it's definitely because of the CPU/GPU. It is at least 3x the speed than current smart phone in the market. It is most noticeable in 3d graphics (gamings especially or even navigation).
The sluggishness of SGS will be fixed (entirely) prettysoon by firmwares / mods / roms.
If you compare the hardwares, SGS will be the knight in the arena.

But Google has signaled a pull away from that on future phones (IE, seems like they don't want to sell their own device directly). The N1 is probably going to be the exception to the rule... All other devices (HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc) you're going to have to wait for both the manufacturer and the carrier to pass updates through. So if Google doesn't directly sell the Nexus Two themselves, it'll be no different.
But here's the catch... Since Samsung has devices in all markets... They're going to be the most likely device the community will custom ROM. I could be wrong though...

I'm really hoping for some good custom ROMS for it. I'm new to the whole Android thing...including custom ROMS but I am very intrigued

Maybe we should organize a boycott of the Galaxy Tab

I apologize for making another "I'm mad at Samsung for..." thread, but after trying for the past hours to get the JI5 update and failing, I'm a bit angrier than I usually am and want to hurt Samsung somewhere where they will feel it while not going to extremes like trying to organize a class action suit.
Ever since the Galaxy S line came out they really haven't done much to support it except release 3 buggy updates for three of the phones and completely ignore the one that's been out in the States for the longest (until the "made you look" event of today), yet they're so eager to show off that Galaxy Tab that they want everyone to be interested in and buy next month. I suggest simply spreading the word to everyone that no one should but that thing until they at least get their house in order and get the Galaxy S line up to the basic functionality they should have had out of the box. Spread the word that they apparently can't support the products they release and that nobody should touch those things until they can prove they are going to stand behind the products they want us to spend our hard earned money on.
Before some of you start flaming me, I do very well know this is a forum for people who mod their phones and have no intention of staying stock. I mod my phones too. Even with the fixes I've flashed I still have issues with GPS and the phone resetting. I appreciate everything the community has done to help make these phones better and I whole heartedly thank them for doing so, but at the same time there's a whole company with a division of people getting paid to do this that hasn't been able to supply us with one good fix after nearly 3 months time. It's time we should make every potential customer aware of that.
I'm boycotting the U.S. release of the Galaxy Tab, but only because I find the fact that all 4 U.S. carriers disabling the phone functions of the thing (the international version won't have this limitation) as a hugely retarded move.
I'm not interested in carrying around 2 huge slabs-o-touchscreen all the darn time. If I were I'd be an iDiot and worship Steve Jobs.
That's understandable, personally I could care less about being able to make calls on tablet. It's not like you would be able to take calls on both your cell phone and the tablet. And I sure wouldn't care for having another phone number.
I love my iPad btw!

Why would you carry it around if you can't use it as a phone?
Sent using my Vibrant with the Tapatalk app
To be honest I am not surprised they are disabling the calling feature. In fact I would be surprised if they didn't.
I mean I for one wouldn't want to stop using my vibrant to use that giant tablet.
Also no matter what it will have wifi so it can be more like a laptop on the go and playing games on it will be awesome from the looks of it.
Well if they are just disabling the feature then that means the hardware to make calls is still built in so someone could root it and make calls anyway. But I'm still not getting one cause it'll be just like my phone. Tablets are a median of a phone and a notebook but nowadays the Ipad is the best out.

Can't say I'm feeling pouty and petulant about Samsung in general, but I crossed four Tabs off my Xmas list when they announced the phone functionality was disabled.
As for the frequent comments about the Tab being too large to use as a phone, I use my phone as a speakerphone most of the time, and Bluetooth headsets put the final nail in the coffin for that argument.
I really doubt the S Tab will sell much anyway.
Smaller screen than the iPad, lower resolution, considerably worse battery life, for almost the same price....
Plus, given our experience with Samsung, it will probably not be upgraded to Gingerbread, which according to Google is the first version of Android actually meant for tablets.
Who in their right mind will buy the Tab?
What made me mad is they have more accessories slated for that thing than the very phones they already have out.
Docks, keyboards and all kinds of goodies. Oh yeah they all plug into the bottom of the Tab not the top like our retarded phones.

Exactly!
Since it's functionally crippled compared to it's European counterpart I don't plan on carrying one around.
It's an interesting device, and will probably have a modicum of success, but the deliberate lockdown of an existing feature is one that makes me uninterested in it.
Given that it's carrier unsubsidized pricing internationally is likely going to make it more expensive than the iPad, if I were to develop an interest in an Android tablet/mid that didn't support phone functions, I'd just SPEND LESS MONEY on a comparable 7" tablet that doesn't have phone functions. There are several...

At the moment pretty much every App available doesn't even support the tablets 1024x600 resolution so they will be to small for the screen or will stretch and look like crap.

Nice troll, since I don't believe you are actually as stupid as you're trying to get us to believe.
No, we're all pissed off about Samsung's crappy support. I bought a phone with a GPS built in. I can't use my GPS because it doesn't work.
A little fact which has been repeatedly explained to you. So either you choose to ignore it so you can troll more, or you have major issues with reading comprehension, take your pick.
And, as I said elsewhere, no one forced you to bring your fanboi self into this thread.
I'll hold out for MOTO or HTC

That's great, let's organize a boycott of something that 99.9% of people have no plan to purchase in the first place. In other words, we're going to have to seek out people who want to buy the Tab and then dissuade them. Personally, I think I won't.
psshh, who is gonna buy that over sized phone anyway, too big for been a phone, too small for been a tablet

sad news :(

Not really surprising as the device is already almost 2 years old. At least the GPE will get 5.1. But even the nexus has an EOL where it stops getting updates. So one can not expect a device to get updates for more then a year.
Love how people just except two years as being an outdated phone what do new phones do that the old phone dont do probably not a lot but people being people have got to have the latest and greatest. ?

Not in the least. I plan on holding on to this for at least a few more years myself. It does what I need it to so no real reason to change, Other then the camera of course.
Its just we can not expect OEM to keep updating devices they dont even make anymore.

We've had a good run though. From Android 4.1.2 > 4.2.2 > 4.3 > 4.4 > 4.4.2 > 4.4.3 > 5.0.2 > 5.1, I think only Apple has had longer support than our M7.
I dont care about it
I want sell my m7 for buy OPO
Don't worry about it
M7 have great Devs and Lots of custom rom :good:
A very Good Decision by HTC ( for digging their grave)
First M9 (just m8+)
Now ridiculous update decision only m7 GPE like Sense m7 is not their main device GPE was
look for GPE sale its not comparable to sense
we don't need buggy Lollipop at least give us bug free edition
or let us stay 4.4.3 which is best
who is making these decision ?
I think within couple of years HTC will be in grave digged by themselves

You do know HTC has been in the smartphone business for longer then any other right? They were making smartphones when most people were still getting their first flip phone.
If you want a bug free rom I would avoid lollipop all together.
If you want to stay on 4.4.3 then stay there. No one is making you update.
The gpe version is just far easier to update and they had to push a fix update anyway for the hardware keys. So it's not a surprise.

I'm using HTC since HTC p3400 Windows still not purchased smartphone other than HTC YES!! REALLY!! 7 or 8th HTC in row
but these decision letting them down as you know their sales record
I just want bug free who don't unlock Bootloader & have custom rom they stuck with bad version and next they away from HTC
I'm hopefully looking for m10
but I fear like at time of m13/14 HTC will be sold to other phone maker like MOTO

Every company goes through small dips in sales and with the influx of users that are less focused on usage and more on gimmics the more their sales will hurt. The M9 is not a bad device. I think people need to realize that we are soon coming on a platoue of of ground breaking features built into a phone. They have not let anyone down by not updating it to 5.1. Ill be honest if you want a completely bug free rom then android may not be for you. Android will always have bugs, it is the nature of the beast with open source software. Even 5.1 is suffering from random reboots, ram issues, wifi issues, connectivity issues and so on. I dont see HTC selling out any time soon. No device is perfect to be honest. People are complaining about the m9 because it looks like the rest of the M series. Well they just did the wisest thing in that if it isnt broken then dont fix it. The main complaints with the m7 and m8 was the camera so they worked on it an improved it or so they say.
To me it really doesnt matter, as Sense has been a joke ever sense they moved away from Touchflow on WM. Custom roms will always be needed with android. That is one of the draws to it. People who dont want to mess with their device buy Iphones. Which is not a bad thing, they just have more important things to do then mess with their phones. Cant really blame them there.
As for my avatar. People starting coping it so I changed it. Kinda like all the themes for lollipop. They all look the same and that is not my style.

Very mature
I feels plateau Arrive since 2GB RAM and 1080p come to market only battery is remained last thing to update
100% bug free im not talking but almost bug free that's we need
but I don't get why Google is in hurry to launch New version as I remember ICS KK were much stable than why hurry ?
iPhone is not solution for developing counties "Android" is "The solution"
Google knows it
HTC knows it but they don't following right strategy
In India last 3-4 months they launched a long list of Desire series in much combination but I can't suggest a single phone to my friends (my approx. every classmate asks me before buying a new phone) and I feels sorry for HTC
in some they don't have compatible processor or battery (they copy Samsung strategy Big screen but not implemented with big battery or at good price
companies like Xiaomi, Oneplus, Micromax will hit hard next time)
m9 (for HTC you are not apple so you cant sell your phone just correcting them ) you ever need fresh as you done in past Sensation DesireHD m7 are examples
They don't even have right flagship combination
Remember Butterfly S launched with 3300 mAh now m9 plus spec coming with 2900 mAh reverse gear !!

While I understand it may not be ideal for developing countries like India, China and such. You say apple is not the solution and android is and I am guessing you are talking on a price point. It all comes down to hardware at that point. Yes you can get a cheap android device but as you pointed out they really are not that great. Xiaomi will not even be a contender until they change MIUI, to many lawsuites heading their way, and once you remove all of their services the price will increase. Oppo and Opo might get a good following soon and maybe make it to the big time. We can only wait and see. Their last device was a flop. Micromax is not even an option as all they do is import and rebrand China based devices.
Cant talk about the butterfly S. It was never released here so I have not even seen it.
I dont see why everyone is so focused on the battery. I can get almost 2 days with my m7. No I dont play games on it, nor do I do social networking with it. It is a tool I use and then put it down when I am done. I can easily go for 6 hours without even looking at my phone.
In the end it is as with all electronic devices. You get what you pay for. If people what cheap devices then they have to be willing to live with sub-flagship hardware.
I wont even get into samsung. They have made a name off of gimmics.

Can you imagine the M9 with a 3300 mAh battery when consumers are crying about this phone being 0.3mm thicker than the M8? They would have to add an extra 0.1mm and it would be catastrophic (sarcasm)

Exactly what I said to another guy in the update thread yesterday, there will always be bugs so don't expect a bug-free final version. Even if they push 5.1, there will still be ppl complaining about no 5.1.1 (or whatever the next update will be) to fix what is broken is 5.1.
Never had any bugs in KitKat apart from noise cancelling mic one but this update has been crap to say the least even for nexus 7 which I downgraded straightaway. Its a shame its so buggy but due a new phone and can't wait to get rid of this phone now I might even jump ship to windows or dare say it ios because it seems lollipop in general is buggy no matter what phone you have. I know the other os are full of bugs as well but I think they correct a lot of them as well I could be wrong but definitely think change is in the air just hope I make the right choice????

Lg you are a shame !!!!!

I am pissed off by information that LG G4, the 2015 FLAGSHIP DEVICE from lg is not going to get nougat update .... THIS IS SOME JOKE and lg need to get their s*it together ... What the fu*k LG ???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???
You put your money to software development for some crappy devices (that apparently will have nougat) of yours that are sh*t and you can not update one of the best devices out there .. even now the G4 is more than better device for most of consumers and IT IS A SHAME to leave behind some of the best phones of the 2015.
There is no explanation for this type of behavior and i will never buy LG .. never again .. fu*k that sh*t ...
Such a beautifull and powerfull phones and such a irresponsibility ...

When will you guys figure that out. They dont want to support the g4. They want you to upgrade. Its the way of the world. You. Me. Us. Were such a small part of lgs sales. They dont care. They dont need to care. Theyre mobile division is so small compared to theyre tv and apliance divisions. So ure not gonna buy another lg u say. Thats fine by them. Some one else will buy it. Then u got nexus line built by lg
In the end is all your doing is stressing yourself out over a dang phone guys.
There is more to the world springs coming for some of us. Be happy to be alive.
I had HTC, Samsung, LG. When I look back I cannot say that ANY of those vendors doing the android job well. On long term they ALL suck. Why?
I hate to say it but just look at apple. What is one main part of its success? Development of Hardware and OS is in the same house. This way they can support 1 hardware over several releases and totally optimized between hw and software.
Now look at android. Google provides the main development part on Android meaning the software part. Then hardware vendors step in and adjust it to their needs. Up to here everything is fine.
But then Google says they stop MM development and then security fixes. Google say that now the hardware vendors are responsible from now on to provide patches and updates.
But here the story does not end. The hardware vendors work together with service providers like Verizon etc. Now the hardware vendor says oh I'm not responsible for those ! Updates and patches for these models should be made by the service providers instead.. Do you see where this ends?
I can totally understand the Google way but this simple does NOT work.
Example: The moment when Google decides to drop support patching MM with security patches. 90% of the hardware vendors and service providers in the world just stop here. Yes not all. Some do it better some worse but !! they all focus on specific hardware devices only so called flagships mainly.
There are good ones like blackberry out there. I see a big chance for them to get those people want to have not the latest major release but long term updated security patches. Even when Google stops to do it. Problem blackberry sold the hardware part to TCL so no one knows how this will end.
The other only chance I see which totally make sense would be using Google hardware. The way began with nexus and now goes to pixel. I believe that if Google provides updates and patches on long term for its own hardware it can be a valid choice .
I hate apple don't get me wrong. But I love the way they are able to provide software releases.
I strongly believe that my next device will be either an upcoming blackberry or the next Google pixel release..
Just my useless 5 cents..

It's not just Apple - Microsoft are more similar to the Android model (one OS on multiple hardware manufacturers) and when an update is available for Windows, it's available immediately for all installs. Same with games consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo - no update staggering there either.
When it comes to software updates, Google suck. Not only are updates needlessly staggered, but often features are removed, broken or untested until release then they need to patch it, and given the delays in pushing software updates, many people are left long term with severely bugged software.

Luckily for me, I don't hate Apple. Also luckily for me, I realise that I use no feature on my phone which is Android specific. I'm so done with Google that my next device is likely to be an iPhone.

Well, I guess my G4 bootlooped just in time. Just about time to look to other manufacturers. Jokes aside, even if this is not true, I don't think I'll be getting an LG device any time soon. I'm really tempted to explore other options, since my last 2 devices were LG-made.
