Nexus One aka Google "FAIL"-phone

Engadget found the FCC filing: no at&t 3G.
That's a big FAIL on google's part. What's the point of selling the phone unlocked if you can only use it with one carrier?

Mmmmhhh. Plenty of rumors today that Google will shortly release an unlocked android phone (HTC hardware).
Apparently, employees received the phone at a Friday event.
Might even come with at&t AND US t-mobile 3G (so quad-band 3G?).

Last night, we started seeing some Tweets from Google employees and others about a new Android-powered Google phone that was apparently handed out at an “all hands” meeting. Now Google is confirming that it is indeed “dogfood” testing a new Android device with employees around the world.
But this isn’t just another Android phone. Very trustworthy sources who have seen the phone say that it is the Google Phone we first wrote about last month (despite the uninformed saying we were dreaming). It will be branded Google and sold by Google as an unlocked phone, which could change everything. As we wrote in our original post:
Google is building their own branded phone that they’ll sell directly and through retailers. They were long planning to have the phone be available by the holidays, but it has now slipped to early 2010. The phone will be produced by a major phone manufacturer but will only have Google branding (Microsoft did the same thing with their first Zunes, which were built by Toshiba).
There won’t be any negotiation or compromise over the phone’s design of features – Google is dictating every last piece of it. No splintering of the Android OS that makes some applications unusable. Like the iPhone for Apple, this phone will be Google’s pure vision of what a phone should be.
The phone itself is being built by HTC, with a lot of input from Google. It seems to be a tailored version of the HTC Passion or the related HD2 (Unlocker scored some leaked picturesback in October which are of the same phone).
Here are the details we know so far about the phone: It will be called the Google Phone and will launch in early January, 2010. It won’t be sold by any one carrier, but instead will be an unlocked GSM phone. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and possibly AT&T, whose exclusivity deal with the iPhone is about to run out. It will be running Android 2.1
The phone is “really, really fast,” says someone who has seen one in action. It runs on a Snapdragon chip, has a super high-resolution OLED touchscreen, is thinner than the iPhone, has no keyboard, and two mics. The mic on the back of the phone helps eliminate background noise, and it also has a “weirdly” large camera for a phone. And if you don’t like the touchscreen keyboard, a voice-to-text feature is supposed to let you dictate emails and notes by speaking directly into the phone.

Same phone just different versions. I'm guessing Bravo will remain the htc version/name which will prolly be released in europe in april while nexus might be google's name and maybe passion will be what some carriers might call it. Seems like it'll be for Tmobile's 3g so it will work on At&t's Edge at least (maybe 3g too if they added the frequency); which does make sense since the first android phone was produced by htc and went to tmobile. If these rumors come to fruition, tmobile will finally have a phone to brag about. I'm sure everything will be clear by CES the latest (though I wouldn't be suprised if they'd make an announcement before the end of the year.)

i wonder where all the hype comes from.
we already had a device which was made by htc based on googles requirements. it was called tmobile G1.
So this is nothing more than a successor for me. Also i wonder what stuff like "this time google is responsible for the whole user experience" means.
Android is from Google, and as far as i know they did it on themselves since day 1. Nobody told them what to do. So how much more "own google experience" can the new device be, compared to the other "with Google" devices which also were based on Googles own Android?!
Well maybe HTC will provide some kind of google sense ui to make the user interface prettier.
But as it stands now i would prefer a HTC device like the HTC Bravo with HTC Sense to any google only device. If Google manages to overhaul the UI on some apps like the contact app, this might change of course. But i'm not sure if google can pull that off, HTC has some more years experience in this regard.

I really hope that it has Sense UI. Google has to be able to realize that HTC's take on their home screens is much better than the original design.

Nexus One is very cool. It comes with a 5MP camera with flash. I'm loving it so far.

nexus..as in sony ericsson's x10 with nexus? i doubt that SE would be giving their UI out. its just called the nexus one.

Not only going to look at it, I gonna get it. Early X-Mas for me. I can't say much...sorry. Phone is bounded to an NDA.
EDIT: My mistake, it's a UX, not a UI.

maybe it will have the ability to switch UI's, like the user would get the option to buy UI's.. like sense or rachel or motoblur...

The Definitive Android 2.1 Upgrade Chart - Updated With User Interfaces

Alright, like everyone else, I have grown tired of all the complaining about the 2.1 update. Yes, I would love to get my hands on the official update as I feel our 2.1 leak was pretty buggy. The devs have done great with what they have to work with, and I love running 2.1 even with some of the quirks that are inherent to a hacked ROM.
What I don't get is how everyone can be so upset with Sprint. Personally, I am on Sprint because they are cheap, and offer good cell phone service where I live. That's it. If you are upset with your carrier (as I was with my extremely high bills on Verizon) then buy out your contract and go to another carrier. However, don't expect that you will get your magical 2.1 upgrade any sooner with any other carrier.
Do most people realize that there is not a single Android phone for sale in America that has ever been upgraded to 2.1 from 1.5 or 1.6? In fact, there are only three phones that have ever even received an Android OS upgrade at all. The T-Mobile G1 (1.0-1.6), the T-Mobile myTouch 3G (1.5-1.6), and the Motorola Droid (2.0-2.1). That's it people.
For all the people blaming Sprint, HTC, or even Sense for how long it's taking them, look around. The T-Mobile G1 and myTouch3G both came out before the Hero, both run vanilla Andoid, and neither of them have been upgraded to 2.1. Just look at all the phones that are still running 1.5 and 1.6.
Personally, I think it will be hilarious if Sprint is the first carrier in America to upgrade a phone from 1.5 to 2.1. If this upgrade happens soon, this will certainly be the case. I just don't get how people can be so upset that we don't have the official 2.1 yet when there are only three phones that have it (two of which launched with it, and one of which launched with 2.0).
I apologize for making a new thread, but I wanted the chart below to have it's own space, and I didn't want it to get buried in one of the many other 2.1 threads. I believe this chart contains every Android phone available on one of the 4 major carriers in America. I compiled this list using wikipedia, so I didn't verify that it is 100% valid. I listed only phones available in America, and cleaned up the formatting to make it useful. Enjoy.

I Gotta say that no one should be PO'D at Sprint,HTC or any other company for that matter, Sprint is the Best carrier I've been. Quit whining 2.1 will arrive before you all know it. Shut up root your hero while you still can flash a custom 2.1 rom and be happy. i Know im not gonna to upgrade to the official release. Ill wait to one my fav dev's puts out a 2.1 rom based off the otw upgrade with all fat trimmed off so it runs the way it should. So everybody behave your selves the upgrade from sprint will come no doubt, then you can go back to whining about how laggy and buggy your 2.1 hero is.
As for me Im gonna flash toast's new one fresh-toast 1.1, oh maybe something from damageless, oh hey darchstar's got a new one wow decision, decisions, lol

This definitively shows that the problem is not with Sprint and that manufacturers seem to have decided that there is no benefit to them whatsoever to supporting existing customers. Google is also failing to get the situation under control.

I agree that people should stop whining about 2.1, it's more annoying than the 2.1 posts.

I guess my personal aggravation is the fact that it seems if you don't have the latest and greatest phone through your carrier's catalog you seem to just be cast in the corner. Was it not just 5 months ago the Hero was the savior and pride and joy of sprint's network and now with the evo on its way it's as if were the red headed child sitting in the corner. I agree that when it comes it comes but I just don't like the feel a company gives when they do something like that. Yes market and pay attention to your new toy but don't forget your loyal followers and their needs when we're locked in to at least 12 months with a phone you just called the greatest thing since the last big hit.

Its always been the same with every OS and every carrier. I remember being wint Windows same thing, these company make the money in the hardware not software therefore it's no business sense to give a great deal of support for older hardware. The truth of the matter is that for companies like HTC, people will continue to purchase the latest, even after all the waiting on the Hero most people will still go out and get the Evo. The only company making great support is Apple.

sprint still sucks Di** in my opinion, 2.1 or not

I will tell you why I am upset with sprint over this. It's because sprint in conjunction with HTC and Samsung decided back late last year that instead of doing maintenance updates to fix the known issues with both phones they would upgrade the phones to 2.1 and include the fixes then. This certainly implied some urgency on their part. But apparently none of the companies involved put enough resources into the upgrade. Also this fantasy of doing both phones at the same time tells me they are not interested in getting the updates out as soon as they are available because someone might be upset if one gets done before the other.
I rooted back in Jan and my phone works great. But I also expect when I buy a premium phone that it is supported properly by Sprint and the phone manufactures. If they can't do that then they have failed. I don't care if no other phone has been upgraded to 2.1. Every other carrier in the US has a phone that runs 2.1 yet sprint can't even give us a date to have that option. They have really screwed this up.

Well since I don't go to salespersons who don't in some way look after my interests that would mean that I wouldn't go back to Sprint. I have no intention of doing that. Sprint provides a quality service at an affordable price. They just can't afford to continue to make mistakes like this or they will continue their decline until they are out of business and I don't want to see that happen.

Talk about the worst product name ever. I don't think I could buy a phone with that UI on it, simply because I would be too embarrassed to actually tell anyone that I was playing with my "TouchWiz".

What the hell? AT&Fee doesn't have a 2.1 device and neither does T-Mobile really. They have the Nexus One, but it is not sold in stores and with all the hardware and software issues, it's not worth mentioning. The only carrier with any 2.1 devices is Verizon and that is just as of now. The MT3G, EVO, and other devices are well on the way.

think of it this way... you're gonna want to run Froyo when it comes out anyway & NO WAY is Sprint or HTC gonna bother with an official upgrade for that. They'll be pushing the EVO/Next Big Thing. Thank goodness for the great developers working on stuff here.

Maybe we should organize a boycott of the Galaxy Tab

I apologize for making another "I'm mad at Samsung for..." thread, but after trying for the past hours to get the JI5 update and failing, I'm a bit angrier than I usually am and want to hurt Samsung somewhere where they will feel it while not going to extremes like trying to organize a class action suit.
Ever since the Galaxy S line came out they really haven't done much to support it except release 3 buggy updates for three of the phones and completely ignore the one that's been out in the States for the longest (until the "made you look" event of today), yet they're so eager to show off that Galaxy Tab that they want everyone to be interested in and buy next month. I suggest simply spreading the word to everyone that no one should but that thing until they at least get their house in order and get the Galaxy S line up to the basic functionality they should have had out of the box. Spread the word that they apparently can't support the products they release and that nobody should touch those things until they can prove they are going to stand behind the products they want us to spend our hard earned money on.
Before some of you start flaming me, I do very well know this is a forum for people who mod their phones and have no intention of staying stock. I mod my phones too. Even with the fixes I've flashed I still have issues with GPS and the phone resetting. I appreciate everything the community has done to help make these phones better and I whole heartedly thank them for doing so, but at the same time there's a whole company with a division of people getting paid to do this that hasn't been able to supply us with one good fix after nearly 3 months time. It's time we should make every potential customer aware of that.

I'm boycotting the U.S. release of the Galaxy Tab, but only because I find the fact that all 4 U.S. carriers disabling the phone functions of the thing (the international version won't have this limitation) as a hugely retarded move.
I'm not interested in carrying around 2 huge slabs-o-touchscreen all the darn time. If I were I'd be an iDiot and worship Steve Jobs.

That's understandable, personally I could care less about being able to make calls on tablet. It's not like you would be able to take calls on both your cell phone and the tablet. And I sure wouldn't care for having another phone number.

To be honest I am not surprised they are disabling the calling feature. In fact I would be surprised if they didn't.
I mean I for one wouldn't want to stop using my vibrant to use that giant tablet.
Also no matter what it will have wifi so it can be more like a laptop on the go and playing games on it will be awesome from the looks of it.

Well if they are just disabling the feature then that means the hardware to make calls is still built in so someone could root it and make calls anyway. But I'm still not getting one cause it'll be just like my phone. Tablets are a median of a phone and a notebook but nowadays the Ipad is the best out.

Can't say I'm feeling pouty and petulant about Samsung in general, but I crossed four Tabs off my Xmas list when they announced the phone functionality was disabled.
As for the frequent comments about the Tab being too large to use as a phone, I use my phone as a speakerphone most of the time, and Bluetooth headsets put the final nail in the coffin for that argument.

I really doubt the S Tab will sell much anyway.
Smaller screen than the iPad, lower resolution, considerably worse battery life, for almost the same price....
Plus, given our experience with Samsung, it will probably not be upgraded to Gingerbread, which according to Google is the first version of Android actually meant for tablets.
Who in their right mind will buy the Tab?

What made me mad is they have more accessories slated for that thing than the very phones they already have out.
Docks, keyboards and all kinds of goodies. Oh yeah they all plug into the bottom of the Tab not the top like our retarded phones.

Since it's functionally crippled compared to it's European counterpart I don't plan on carrying one around.
It's an interesting device, and will probably have a modicum of success, but the deliberate lockdown of an existing feature is one that makes me uninterested in it.
Given that it's carrier unsubsidized pricing internationally is likely going to make it more expensive than the iPad, if I were to develop an interest in an Android tablet/mid that didn't support phone functions, I'd just SPEND LESS MONEY on a comparable 7" tablet that doesn't have phone functions. There are several...

Huge flaw with Samsung tablet, not sure if mentioned
At the moment pretty much every App available doesn't even support the tablets 1024x600 resolution so they will be to small for the screen or will stretch and look like crap.

I can make everything in an app support that higher res, and I font even consider myself a dev... More of a file mover.. But there are tutorials and some apps are already compatible...
Remember when donut and froyo came out not all apps were compatible.. Some apps dont work on donut now...

T-Mobile has its problems, but what about the rest of the companies carrying the Galaxy S? Have any released Froyo, or successful compass fixes?
No? Must be a worldwide carrier conspiracy to make Samsung look bad, by delaying fixes and OS upgrades.....
No, Samsung's track records with product support just sucks. That's why some are pissed.

I found it quite interesting that the T-Mo exec came out and admitted they'd had Froyo from Samsung since late November and they'd dropped the ball on adding their crapola to it. Makes me wonder if Sprint has had it that long as well and has just been dicking around all this time.. almost makes perfect sense with their lack of advertising/acknowledging of the Epic.

I haven't read that yet, but if the T-mo exec came out and said legitimately said that, well KUDOS to them. That is awesome. It would be nice of these other companies were as transparent, although they have all been too quiet for too long.

We all know that the carriers have had it since November. Samsung created a rom based on 2.2 and delivered to carriers in november. Then Z4root came out and was published to the market, allowing anyone running 2.2 to root their phone ridiculously easily. Instead of releasing this update to the public and allowing them to root their phones easily, the carriers told Samsung to go back to the drawing board with 2.2.1, which was the update that Google made to Froyo to specifically combat Z4root. Since November, that is what Samsung has been working on.
At least this is what I gather from all of the information I have read. It makes perfect sense. Its like a perfect storm for the Galaxy S users in the US. Samsung had to basically push out 2 updates to the carriers back to back while the users sit there and think Samsung is still working on the original.

Personally I think it's a matter of too many hands in the cookie jar. I heard from the Denver District Sprint mgr (we're dating) that they've had it since Nov and there are conflicts between sprint id and tw, but samsung won't allow sprint to do anything w/ tw and so Sprint is basically saying "well we won't have our sprint ID, making us money, so we're not releasing it until sprint id works correctly" and sammy says "not touching tw!" And so here we are ... stuck. 2.2 on epic = nukem 4?
(As a side note, nukem 4 is/was released... lol...)

That's disheartening because I want NOTHING to do with sprint id, and I seriously doubt anyone else does either (I've heard nothing but bad things).
Even more troubling...I'm also fairly certain that yes, we will see froyo and eventually gbread...but the only way for sprint to do this is with some extreme bloatware..I can only imagine the end-user horror of modifying touchwiz without actually modifying touchwiz. And that is exactly what adding sprint id would do. So yes, I really do believe the sprint tweet that they're working on it but it needs to pass testing. And I'm also willing to bet my last dollar that their version of touchwiz with sprint id is failing the tests horribly. It kind of all makes sense. Because sprint can't afford to lose much money, so not releasing a bad froyo (ala canadian galaxy s) is an upmost priority.
Which leads me to three feelings.
1. I have to admit its encouraging to see them put a lot of value into quality testing.
2. Reallllllllly reinforces my wanting of carriers to just say fuk the bloatware and give me aosp.
3. And this ones just evil. Just release the faulty software already at the expense of the common user, simply so the devs can get their hands on it and get rid of the crap so I can finally have a bug free froyo.

Who writes the drivers for:
display
radio
4g
bluetooth
GPS
etc, etc, etc
Do you know how many different chips and combinations of chips there are that accomplish these various tasks and the multitude of drivers needed to allow the various Android OS' communicate with the hardware? I think its a common misconception that Google just releases an OS that can instantly run on every Android device. Its the same as installing Windows XP on a computer. Sure, it will boot, but your ethernet, graphics card, wifi, etc wont work because there are no drivers.

I believe what they meant was that Samsung is too concerned with keeping tw launcher and Sprint is too concerned with integrating their stupid Sprint ID feature. Give us Vanilla Android and save the end user some trouble.

I agree, but even if they did that, its not like we are going to be seeing updates a lot quicker. They still need to either create new drivers or update the ones they are currently using to be completely stable with the new OS. Sure it will shave a little time off of the release not messing around with Sprint ID and TW, which i would love, but they still have to develop drivers.

The final update will not have sprint id. If it were going to have it, I.d. would have been in one of the leaked betas...
Also, whosdaman said it won't either. He's been spot on since launch.

I disagree. To me it would make much more sense that sprint would get everything else in 2.2 done and working before messing with sprint id. So just because you didn't see it in a leak, IMO that's not indicative of us not getting sprint id, because I believe they would save it for last.
And don't get me wrong, whosdamans daman. But he prbly doesn't work for sprint. So I'm not gonna jump up and take his word for it.

Just wait... and stop flaming Sprint because without them we wouldn't even have the Epic to play with right now. I work for customer care and you don't realize how many people don't even KNOW about roms or tweaking. Epics are amazing, and incredibly fast regardless, be lucky that you even have one! And that you have amazing developers here giving u even the opportunity to play with 2.2 before the official release. I wouldn't even be surprised that these developers could port over 2.3 before sprint even releases there's lol.

I'm curious, what does the cheapest version of the SERO plan come out to for the Epic (in real, this is what gets charged on my credit card, money)?
My bill that just came due is $87.84 with an 18% employer discount applied to the base 69.99 plan. That does include a $4.99 monthly "no I won't let you take the money out of my bank account without me pressing a button" charge.

I mean it has some game changing features, but I don't think people really understood those unique features it offers. The Rogers employees at various stores didn't even have a clue about Touchless Controls so what selling point would they pitch to a client looking to get a new phone? It's got "less cores", "I would just go with the Galaxy S4". The ONLY Canadian carrier selling this phone is not even educating it's employees about new upcoming products, prior to release. It's sad, really. Is that why the only two OEM's doing well (Samsung, Apple) are the ones that bombard us with advertising?

For me, it doesn't. I'm sure Google and Motorola are aware of the mountain they need to climb in order to build mindshare and attain high sales, and they probably don't expect it to happen immediately with this one device.

It's not really about the phone at all. It's about what I suspect was a poor marketing execution for a product that could have turned a lot more heads than it has. I mean, sure I don't have statistics, but I'm posting it as an open discussion to see if other people feel this way or if I'm just crazy...
Having went to school for advertising/marketing, it genuinely bothers me when GOOD products fail to sell well because of a failed marketing campaign. It happens a lot, but with Google backing Motorola up on this one, I expected a little more as far as the marketing side goes.

They may be waiting until Motomaker comes out for all carriers to hardcore advertise, they have a few ads out already, go to YouTube and search "Lazy Phone"

It might be a success in the USA, but not in Canada. There's no marketing whatsoever going on. All the nice displays & merchandising seen in the US is nowhere to be found in Canada.
I agree with the OP - When I went to buy it outright at Future Shop, they looked at me and said "Why don't you buy a Samsung or Nexus? That phone isn't up to par."
Unfortunately, Motorola Canada continues to underwhelm... Saddening, really. This phone really is the best-kept secret on the market... in Canada.

Now if it was an HTC phone, and a flop, I'd be worried.
As for the dev support, This is the first device I've ever owned that I didn't feel needed "fixing" with a custom ROM. We have Root, we have Xposed mods, I'm good.

I was honestly hoping this would be a good device to learn about developing roms on. I have a bunch of things I want to do and no one to go ask for help ;_;

In the United States, it has been sold out from Verizon Wireless retail stores within a 50-mile radius of me for weeks. So I think that it is selling fairly well.
You are correct that it hasn't been marketed very well. But that all comes down to marketing spend in two areas:
1) Advertisements. Other manufacturers (Samsung, Apple) have more prominently-placed advertisements. Even Motorola and Verizon Wireless tend to promote the Droid RAZR / Ultra / Maxx phones over the Moto X.
2) In-store placement. If you go into a retail store, you'll likely find other phones right at the entrance to the store. The Moto X is usually in the back.

If you wanted to learn developing you should have gone with a more open device (Nexus 4).
Also, coming from a N4 myself, this is the first phone I don't want to root and mod. I would flash roms, kernels, and tinker with the N4 all the time. But this phone has the perfect blend of software.
The reason people normally flash roms is to get closer to AOSP, and this phone is pretty much pure android with some welcomed additions.

It was an honest question because some people might actually start to become unhappy with the Moto X if it doesn't sell well. I didn't know if that was the case with you or not--some might make that clear in their post, and some might not. Again, it was just a question. There really is no need to be so defensive.

The extra storage in this phone won me over. Either way, I'm mainly interested in audio stuff. If possible I'd like to mod the phone to do something similar to Voodoo Sound's DAC direct and analog amp. Aside from that I'd like the ability to build AOSP from the source for this device, which I'm pretty sure is possible with the kernel source Motorola posted a while back.

I think advertising might be more aggressive here in the States than in Canada. The only commercials for the Moto X I've seen are the ones with TJ miller and I've only seen them online, not TV since I haven't been watching it recently.

I have seen a lot of national moto x spots during sporting events on television. especially ncaa and nfl football.

Ah okay I wasn't aware it was doing so well in the states. I guess my observation only holds true for Canada. It really is the best android phone to date IMHO. That's why I was thrown off when I saw it was getting zero recognition here in Canada lol. It's good to hear it's at least somewhat successful because they (Google and Moto) revolutionised how I interact with my phone. When major changes like Touchless Controls or Active Notifications are successful, perhaps it will inspire other manufacturers to dust off those R&D facilities and try something new once in a while.

I personally love my Moto X.
It's essentially a Nexus device with a couple extra goodies for increased functionality.
Sure the camera needs a little tweaking here n' there, but it's overall a wonderful phone.
This phone came at a perfect time for me. I don't want to flash roms every other day anymore. With my new son my priorities are elsewhere now.
Doesn't matter to me if it's not selling well, just means I'll get extra wow factor when showing it off because less people know about it. As long as motorola keeps supporting it, I'm a happy camper.

I snapped this pic real quick inside At&t retail while ordering my 32gig motomaker card. They are pushing it pretty hard.

What are your sources for sales? Or is this just a personal observation? Google and moto seem to be pretty happy with its sales... ya, it's no iphone or Galaxy in terms of sales, but everything here in the states have been bouncing been in stock/out of stock.
Overall, I care little about how well a device sells as long as it continues to be supported by the manufacturer. I don't think they were aiming for a big swing in market share, but rather, proving a point about how the industry has become over obsessed with specs and to bring the mobile device manufacturing process back to the states. Discounting sales, which is definitely important, I think the moto x had been a great success for what it was made to achieve... And I think it will continue to prove more successful in the coming months. Just my personal observation.
