It doesn't seem like HTC asks you over the phone. Do they just get the phone and then charge you if it is an unlocked bootloader?
My phone isn't rooted, but I was asked if I'd rooted it in one of my two warranty swaps.
I'm in the process of doing that now. My rooted phone has been with HTC for a few days and I have not heard anything yet. I'll update when or if I do.
many people on these forumns have without issue.
they charged my $55 for a replacement because of my unlocked b/l.. good for the pople who got away with it though

What was the process that was executed for this? Did they call you? Say something? Did you try and get out of it?
nope. i got my inquiry a couple days after i sent it in and it said that my cost was $55. i called them and they said it was "something i did". but the only thing i would have done was unlock the bootloader. i hadnt dropped it or scratched... basically brand new. so.. much luck you. hopefully you dont get flamed for trying to rip HTC off, like me in the other thread i started haha

I'm not trying to rip them off. I will not hide it if I'm asked and I haven't been so far. What do you mean you got your "inquiry"?
I'm sending mine next week just for the dust under the screen problem. why are you guys sending yours?
Because of my atrocious battery. Although, they offered to send a free battery if I thought mine was bad.
Has anyone returned it for a full refund (or minus $55) with an unlocked boot loader? I wouldn't mind doing that and picking up the Milestone instead.

First (new) phone had a problem with the g sensor and an ill-fitting bottom plastic bit.
Second (first swap) phone had a blue tint to the screen, and a very noticeable blue tint in the bottom fourth or fifth of the screen. Also a dead pixel.
Third (second swap) phone has a much better screen, but still a bit of noticeable blue tint along the bottom edge. Also, the horizontal g sensor is off by quite a bit, and it has the same ill-fitting bottom plastic issue the first had, only much less annoying than the first.
I'm calling tomorrow to do a third swap, hoping this one won't have any issues. If it does, I'll keep whichever is better, and wait a few months before doing another swap. Maybe some of the later AT&T batches won't have the same kinds of problems.
Even with all that, this is the best phone I've ever had. I'm just being super picky after forking over $530. The swaps have been easy; I get a new one overnighted and then send the old one back in the same box with a fedex label htc provides. I have zero complaints about the service, I just wish I'd gotten a perfect phone in the beginning. =)

The Milestone also has the dust problem. I came from a Telus Milestone because it got a speck of dust and I was afraid more would get in. Now I have a speck of dust under my Nexus but it is really small and no more has gotten in.

Well, if battery is an issue couldn't just have replaced your battery? That would cause no concern over the phone itself, so maybe they haven't checked the bootloader yet...

The battery wasn't replaced as I confirmed with them as it wasn't the battery.

Hmmm.. I'm having trouble with my N1 as well, but I'm reluctant to send it in in fear that they'll charge 55 dollars over the unlocked bootloader just to repair just the power button.
:\
I've had my Atrix for about 6 months and suffered through the normal issues without complaining (occasional random reboots & lockups, flaky fingerprint scanner, etc).
Recently my fingerprint scanner stopped working completely. In the past I've been able to get it started again by removing the battery, that doesn't help anymore -- it's completely dead. I've see some posts about cleaning the scanner pad, I may have to try that.
Additionally I now have a black spot in my photos and videos. There's apparently some debris under my camera lens; the spot moves around but it's always there.
I called the ATT handset warranty center expecting them to swap it out for a refurb unit; this isn't ideal but better than what I have. Instead here's the answer I got:
Fingerprint Scanner: "Motorola tells us this isn't a warrantable concern, you have alternate methods to unlock your screen". You can call Motorola directly to see if they'll do anything for you.
Debris inside the camera lens: "Oh, that voids your warranty." I advised the lens is a sealed unit and the debris must have been in there since day one. Their argument is that since I just noticed it now (i.e. it just loosened up and moved into an area where it's noticeable) it is not a warrantable concern and by the way it also voids my phone's warranty.
I'm floored by both answers and pretty shocked. The customer service agent was very matter-of-fact and I know she's reciting the company line.
Anbody have a similar experience?

I have stuff under my front facing camera ,it looks like dust and it is very noticeable. The camera on the back i can see a smudge that is under the lense. You can see it when you go to take a picture. It was caused when i was at Red Lobster, my dad spilled water on my phone and the water leaked under the glass but now it is all gone and it has left behind dust. I have also been experiencing the screen doing things by itself , uncontrolable movement causing me to have to lock and relock the device for it to become usable again. I called ATT and told them everything and NONE of the water circles that determine water damage have changed colors , they are all white. Att said it would cost 150$ for a new phone. Basiclly with me paying 5$ a month for insurance for my phone and then when i have a problem it costs 150$ for a new one? or even a used one i don't see the point in having insurance !

Not any more. Check with AT&T again. The warranty cost went up a month or so ago, and the deductible for the Atrix is now $199. I think it went up in October if I remember correctly.
yea my fp scanners dead
This is why I don't bother with buying insurance on my phones anymore. Most of the time you're just paying a monthly fee for nothing, and when something does go wrong, you get screwed anyway.

They just dropped the atrix 4g down to a tier 2 device so the deductible is $125 now according to at&ts website.
I've switched back to my nexus one for now because my atrix was giving me too many issues. 4-5 battery pulls a day because of screen freezes. Touch screen firing erratically, overheating and shutting down, random reboots, wifi unable to connect unless I restart. It occurs regardless of what rom or kernel including stock everything (it started before I started flashing so I actually thought it was stock issues). Debating which course of action to take with it but I don't have insurance and its bootloader unlocked which may or may not cause issues if I go to Motorola (always a case by case basis i suppose)

I stand corrected! Funny how they changed the Atrix back after only a couple of weeks. Wonder how many people were stuffed with the $199 in that time period!

Interesting, but I certainly wouldn't take a rebadged Galaxy S in preference to an Atrix, even if they were released at a similar time!

Thanks for linking the document. I only knew the information because a few days prior to reading this thread I was looking up insurance information for a friend of mine and I happened to look down in curiosity to what it would be for the Atrix. I didn't have time to find it and link it when I replied here though.
AT&T is shifty!
just call back in, say you are having constant reboots and force closes, tell them you did a hard reset, still no change, and they should send you out a warranty unit
once they get your unit back, they won't actually use the phone so there's no way to tell there aren't resets [and besides, you will send it to them in a factory reset anyways so it will load up with a blur sign up menu]

I thought it was common knowledge that AT&T sucks. Send your phone to Motorola, they will fix it. AT&T is full of **** saying moto says its not covered by warranty, why would they tell you to contact moto directly then!! AT&T can blow me, they charge for premium and give sub standard.

Depends on if they consider the problems to be fixable under warranty. A lot of companies try to weasel out of it though. If your device has scratches, dents or dings they might try to say you dropped it and that caused the problems. Or if you are bootloader unlocked they can claim you voided your warranty because you may have installed software that jacked up your phones hardware. I don't know how Motorola is with this, and you won't know unless you submit it for warranty repair and find out.

Sry for the late response. I'm saying I unlocked my bootloader, reflashed stock gingerbread firmware, then sent in my atrix for repair of digitizer and fps for free.

Just bought a new Defy+ last month and today suddenly a dead/stuck pixel has popped up on the screen . It's just one single pixel. Tried some apps available in market, didn't fix it.
Will this be covered in warranty in India?
sure bro it will be covered..show them the case and i hope they replace the phone.. be kind to them at first but if they don't ... bump them up lol
i don't know how it's managed in India, but there are some rules about LCD screens which tell how many dead pixels are acceptable on some surface. You should first get to know about the rules before sending your phone to the OP, because if there are some, you just lose time waiting for your phone without having it fixed...
Thanks. I've emailed this query to Motorola India. Hope their reply would be positive.
Emailing motorola and that to india is of no use..better go to a nearby service centre and tell them your problem..emailing will get u nothing..
Hey,
Do let us know of any update. I also noticed a dead pixel in the extreme right top corner of screen after the first water test, 1 week after I bought the phone! However, it dissapeared before i could visit the service center! Anyways my phone is now already in service center waiting for its casing to be changed.
I have submitted the phone at Motorola Service Center yesterday. They said it will be fixed, but it will take 10 - 15 days to get it back.
I've got the phone repaired. They've changed the display panel. Problem sorted out!

That's great!! Even my phone got replaced!
This morning I found a dead spot on the left side of my screen.
On top of that my power button squeaks.
Since I bought the phone second hand... I cant get warranty service from Google play. On Lg website they said I have to show prove of purchase which I have no way of doing. So am I stuck with a defective device?

Ah come on! Defective? A squeaky power button? You will never be satisfied if that's a reason to RMA for you. What do you mean with a dead spot? Like one single dead pixel? Because you won't get warranty service for that. If you bought the phone second hand, you could get the warranty from the person you bought it from. Maybe he or she still has a receipt somewhere.
By the way, best question ever. No, you're not a screw.
No I meant there a spot on my screen which made the keyboard letter q and @ unresponsive

Well, that is a reason to get a replacement. I would contact the seller, see if he or she has a receipt or something.
your not rooted or running custom roms?
when I flashed a rom over my current one the bottom right part of the screen became unresponsive, scared me there, so I factory reset, and its fine
you have to get the reciept from the orignal buyer.

I think if any other device doesn't have a squeaky power button its a valid reason to RMA. Anything that isn't normal on other devices is a fault, don't you think ?

I just received my Moto X during lunch today and upon turning the device on, actually just removing it from the box, I noticed a black speck of dirt between the digitizer and the glass. Is this something that Motorola would exchange under the guise of a manufacturers defect or is it something that I will need to live with?

I just got done e-mailing them. What is the replacement policy with Motorola? Do they send you a box to send your phone back and then you wait for a new one to get sent in return or do they send a new phone first and then send your old one back to them?
