dont get too excited yet!
remember the launch date for uk? 9/30/2008? haha
by the time this X1 is out in USA, it already 2009!
Unlocked = crippled!
Sure....an $800 unlocked phone for the US that will only fully work with a single carrier...riiiiight.
Could Sony Ericsson have possible botched the Xperia any more than they have??
Any bets on the date that SE announces they're withdrawing the Xperia from the US market?

You ever wonder why people complain that Europe and Japan get all of the "cool" phones and the U.S. doesn't? It's because the way our 3G network is setup. Everyone has different frequencies, and it's almost impossible to make a chip to carry all of them. Europe has a bunch of different carriers that use the same 3G frequencies, which is why it's easier to roll out the phones there. Helps the consumer, helps the carrier, helps the manufacturer.
So when some manufacturer DOES decide to bring a phone to the U.S., you lambaste them because of it's high unlocked price, even though all unlocked phones are expensive. (I was in best buy today and they're selling the N95-4 for $750 still!). Guess what, the X1i is free on contract in Europe. It would be free here too if our 3G network weren't so backwards.
So basically, all these manufacturers are producing 3G phones for the U.S. and they know fully well it only works on AT&T. That's why they only make a few phones compatible - it's not economical to bring them over just to work with one carrier.

You're right that the US frequency mish mash is a mess....but don't think for a minute that phones can't include multiple frequencies and that the carriers are innocent! Verizon, for example, recently insisted that a mfr modify their phone to remove frequencies that would allow the phone to work on T-mobile's network (I forget the phone....a blackberry, I think). Who decides that a quad band phone should be released in the US as triband or dual band? The phone mfr...nah.
As microsoft said the other day....US carriers don't want to be considered "dumb pipes"; i.e., providing generic access to cell frequencies for customers to use any phone with at reasonable rates! It's the carriers that block phones from tethering unless extra fees are paid to do what the phone can do using the cell networks....its the carriers that create goofy MediaNet type "services" to extract extra fees for doing what the net provides on the unadulterated phones! Its reminiscent of when AOL made users think they were part of some special club that was better than the new fangled internet....even by rebranding a limited access to the net as their own service!
Ah well....I rant and I vent....and I still pay crazy high phone bills.
Bill Gates himself once said that we'd one day look back and view paying for telephone services based on time and distance as "quaint". Within a country we're clearly there (ever watch an old movie and see people run to the phone when a "long distance" call came through?...too funny). But we're not there currently internationally! One day we'll look back at Orange being able to offer a phone for free on contract compared with AT&T being able to charge $299 or even blackmail the mfr into not making a deal, forcing them to sell a phone (a few of them, anyway) for $800 as quaint.
I can't wait for the arrival of international voice and data packages that would allow customers to choose Orange or AT&T or whomever we want to give our monthly money to without being forced to accept bloated software crippled phones!!
Ahh...ok...NOW rant over.
Be seeing you,
The Duck
p.s. - the carrier greed doesn't excuse Sony for this goofyness! If they wanted to sell an unblocked phone they could have made it compatible with more networks than AT&T. It looks like they screwed up and built a phone that was only suitable for AT&T without locking up a contract with AT&T. The carrier probably used the position of strength to extract more than SE's ego would accept....but the phrase "cutting off your nose to spite your face" comes to mind. Bad SE lawyers + greedy AT&T = bye bye Xperia.

Just started looking around to buy an X10. Can't seem to find one that supports ATT's 850/1900 frequency. Do they even sell an X10 that supports that yet ?
Not at the moment. Probably soon. Rogers (Canadian carrier) will be selling its LOCKED x10a so if you want to get it, you'll need to get it unlocked. But it does have the correct frequency for AT&T.
Its coming, rumor has it possible as soon as the Rogers release mid month. Try this link for a little unlocked 850/1900 love ---> http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=190979
Ah ok, thanks guys.
Ya, the X10 will be available through Rogers directly (as well as through Canadian Best Buy stores) on April 15th. Should be $549.99 CDN. It should work on AT&T once unlocked.
There's a thread over on HoFo where U.S. customers are requesting X10's from Canadians:
Anyone In Canada could buy a x10 for me ?

Of course you can. Not convenient for many is all.
In theory the Canadian BB unlocked phone should be the same thing as the American version, be curious to see where it gets priced. Wondering if we will get it in BBs south of the border as I type this.... I would love to put my grubs on this before making a decision.
Good news.
http://www.androidcentral.com/sony-xperia-z3-heading-canada-starting-october-31
Sony has today announced plans to launch the Xperia Z3 in Canada on October 31, with support from Bell, MTS, Rogers, SaskTel, TELUS and WIND Mobile. Should folk wish to purchase the new flagship smartphone without heading down to their local carrier store, Sony stores will also be stocking the same device for purchase on launch day.
No word on how much it will cost just yet, but you can expect to see the device appropriately priced. Purchasers will have the choice of white, black or copper variants.

I would be very surprised if any manufacturer introduced dual SIM model in North America officially. Financially it does not make a sense in USA because technological incompatibility between most providers there. Telcos in Canada behave very "monopolistic" and are way too powerful here. Not like Europe, there is a much more competition going on there and customer wins.
Just get a dual SIM from 3rd party re-seller. I bought one of eBay and I am satisfied. Sony appears to be the only OEM that actually makes high-end phones that operates on all frequencies used in Canada.

Nope, most likely not. Looking at XperiFirm, there is no Customized US firmware in the list.
I gotten my D6633 from eBay too. and currently use it with Fido and AT&T with the two SIMs and only switching between one at a time.
I just purchase a Moto X Play on Swappa and it was listed in the XT1562 group but the seller had a pic of the "about phone" screen with the model #XT-1564 listed. I couldn't find any information anywhere on this specific model. I purchased it after talking with T-mobile and they Guaranteed it would work on their system with no issues...

Based on the naming of the firmware, this variant is specific to Brightpoint US. Meanwhile XT1565 is specific to Verizon aka Droid Maxx 2.
That's strange since this the Moto X Play wasn't released in the states...
Xt1564 is the variant issued to regional cdma carriers in USA partnered with Verizon under their lra (LTE in rural America) program.
I work for one of the carriers that sells this phone and it's like an unbranded Droid maxx 2 which is what the play is I think? Also the accessories we sell for the phone is branded for Droid maxx 2. We tested this phone to see if gsm unlocked with an AT&T sim and it worked fine LTE and all. Unable to verify for t mobile or band 12 support. Sorry not the best reply but hope this helps those who wonder about this variant.

I was told by T-Mobile this should work without an issue. I'll let you know in the next few days, mine is arriving tomorrow. I'll set it up before I leave the States and then test it in Europe.
Well, set the phone up and used it in Switzerland for a few days. Then came back to the States and have had no issues whatsoever. Great phone with incredible battery life, I would highly recommend!

It will, it's originally for Verizon lra partner carriers which run on same network types of Verizon itself. cdma and LTE band 13. Some features native to vzw may not work like VoLTE and stuff though.
Can you speak more on the price or how to get one of these @evilryry ?
Would love to get my hands on a non-bloated Play/Maxx if I could.
My carrier I work for sells full price for like 399, I'm not sure how people can get them outside of the carriers that offer it

My carrier I work for, bluegrass cellular, does not sell phones to people who don't have lines of service with us. Can't speak for other carriers. This is a list of carriers partnered with Verizon under their lra partnership, who may carry this phone. Some carriers don't have it.
Bluegrass Cellular; Cross Telephone; Pioneer Cellular; Cellcom; Thumb Cellular; Strata Networks; S and R Communications;*Carolina West; Custer Telephone Cooperative; KPU Telecommunications; Chariton Valley Communication Corporation; Appalachian Wireless; Northwest Missouri Cellular; Chat Mobility; Matanuska Telephone Association; Wireless Partners; Triangle Communications; Nemont; Mid-Rivers Communications and Copper Valley Telecom.
Thanks for the lead @evilryry Looks like the prospects of buying one outright are pretty low after searching a few websites - I need to live in a service area AND sign up for service. It's no wonder they lock down what is nearly a perfect phone hardware wise to specific location services/carriers.
If you find a way to get one, please put me on the short list of people who really want one.

Sharp has a compact zero-bezel phone with a remarkable design that fits even better in your hand than the Moto X 1st Gen (130mm by 66mm, rounded) and has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 (MSM8992) Plus a very cool IGZO display panel. Currently, if you need a new phone, looking for high-end and want to have max 5 inch phone size, you can only pick the Sony Compact Z5, with a subpar display (has Sony ever released any phone with a very good, competitive screen?).
Have a look at the Sharp Aquos Mini SH-M03:

This is just 126x30mm, fits in your hand easily and you can still reach everywhere on the screen using your thumb with ease, one hand!
They all feature an IGZO panel 4.7" 1920x180 screen and the fast Snapdragon 808 that does not get too hot. I just don't know if they have NFC.
The downside:
The phone is limited to the Japanese LTE bands that are only used in Japan! Even though the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 should for example support all LTE bands used in Europe.
Now my main question is: would it be possible to unlock the LTE bands?
LTE band 3, 7 and 20 are common in Europe. I am sure more people would love to have this phone so perhaps we could even start a fundraising campaign to pay a developer.
I am talking about Europe because here there is a market for <5" phones. While most Asian countries want phablet sized phones. Not sure about US but since the iPhone 4.7" version is highly popular, I am sure there is a need for more competitors with this phone size.
ANSWER: see post #11
You can buy the phone at Zenmarket, i could find a new one for as low as €381 including shipping to Europe.
Qualcomm's QPST Tool should be able to unlock other bands, but you need to unlock a special diagnostic interface on the phone. There is no information online how to do this (if it is even possible!).
Besides this SIM-UNLOCKED model, Sharp also has three identical models, one for each Japanese telecom carrier:
Aquos Serie Mini SHV33 (au provider)
Aquos Xx2 mini (Softbank provider)
Aquos Compact SH-02H (Docomo provider)

Just found out about this phone and came looking for development. If something gets going, I'll probably get one.
I read on some other sites: the chipset can support all bands/frequenties, but the phone needs to have appropriate antennas supporting all those bands. These Sharp phones most likely do not have the right antenna hardware.
Also, there is no documentation whatsoever on how to unlock bootloader etc. So there will be zero development. I have given up all hopes.
The best bet is to hope Sharp will release this model in my area (Europe) with support for band 3, 7 and 20.

I know from personal experience that all the latest Sharp phones, starting at least from SH-01F/SH-02F/302SH/303SH generation work in Russian LTE networks. Unfortunately, Sharp only supports 1 West-European band, which is only used by some providers and perhaps even limited to certain locations.
Russia has a lot of different bands in use for LTE, so I can image if you are in the right area, using the right provider you will have LTE support.

I already did that long before creating this topic.
Selling a phone worldwide is a costly business. Not even Xiaomi is doing that (they are officially only sold in China!).
Selling a phone in saturated markets like Europe is even more risky/expensive.
You CAN buy the phone via the Kyoex website:
http://www.kyoex.com/
But it is extremely expensive (price includes import taxes etc), returning for repairs will be an issue and you still have the LTE frequency issue.
Xiaomi Mix is indeed using Sharp's display tech but it's not a phone. A phone is not 6.4". Hopefully they will release a 5" model as well. But again, they sell officially in China only so again you will be missing the LTE frequencies for most countries.

No idea since I am only interested in their compact versions , hence One Handed phone as title.
interested to try one , but it seem there no ota support outside of japan .
There is a sim-free version of this model which do not require a sim unlock procedure. It's called Sharp Aquos mini SH-M03
You could buy it on a Yahoo Japan auctions with a help of some services like Zenmarket.
AFAIK, all necessary LTE bands on a Qualcomm chipsets could be enabled with a help of a special Qualcomm tool, which edits radio (modem) settings. For example, search for a QPST tool. But you need to find a way to turn on a special diagnostic interface which is used by this service tool.
And I saw a successful usage of this tool for an older models/chipsets. For example, it was used to enable European LTE bands on a Japan domestic Sony phones.

size matters, up to 5", a good choice was the Sony X Compact, but the screen is 720p
SHV33 was best choose until...
I have found that the SHV33 version is not compatible with AT&T (2 out of 8)
from frequencycheck -
Sharp AQUOS PHONE mini SH-M03 LTE is compatible with 2 out of 8 bands on AT&T (United States)

Useless, only lists the popular well known phones, which are all too big or too old (Nexus 4, Moto X 2013) or are the Sony Compact series which I really hate, bad display, and every new version was not a better version (Compact Z5 is a downgrade from Z3 if you don't care about the new chipset).
Proof (selecting my area 4G bands and 130x68mm, minimum 4.6" display and minimum of 1280x720 resolution).

EDIT: I checked and yes the Sharp Aquos mini SH-M03 is indeed for sale via Zenmarket, lowest price I could find is 381 including shipping to Europe. New/barely used state. Unfortunately, I cannot find anything online about unlocking the diagnostic interface on Sharp models. Also, no idea if the QPST Tool would work. Sharp phones are known for being locked/no info about how to unlock them. Unfortunately
Updated the first post.
Just FYI- I am new user so cannot post link,
The most cost saving way is go amazon japan website and search for SH-M03.
If you have friends going to Japan, you can buy and deliver to hotel before arrival. (Normally hotel can accept it for you if you request)
Having use my unlocked Sharp SH-02H for about half year, it is amazing. The phone does support Australia Vodafone LTE network and NFC works with major bank apps. I used adb command to set the DPI to 380 which makes the screen looks just beautify. The only problem which I have is the data format as the build in English profile only support MM/DD/YYYY format. DOCOMO has confirmed they will update SH-02H to Android 7 which may fix the problem.

Where did you buy it? And how did you unlock the sim? Do you know also know how to unlock other frequency bands? Did you find a topic anywhere about specific mods you can do with Sharp phones? I thought ADB would not do much without an unlocked bootloader.
I notice Australia uses 01, 05. 07, 28. In Europe it's 3, 7, 20 with 20 being the most important one since it's 800Mhz (the lower, the better the coverage hence most telco's prefer low frequency for overall coverage).

I bought my SH-02H from eBay. A guy bought that from Hongkong and bring it to Australia. After a few week he get a Samsung S7 then sold that to me. The Sharp SH-02H is compatible with Australian telcoms but not sure other countries.
Currently, there is limited information about the phone and you can only use that unrooted. But, you do can use ADB to change the DPI and hide system apps. I hide almost all build in DOCOMO apps and currently it just look a pure Android phone. There a special Sharp USB drive available to download from Sharp website which you need for ADB.
