[Q] need your help to root N9005 and upgrade it - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my note N9005 today , details as attached
I need 2 important things
root for my root apps
custom recovery CWM to have Nand backup and restore options
According to readings there r 2 ways to root
1 - Universal Root de la Vega which offer [KNOX 0x0] and non official rom so u lose OTA, and when u flash CWM u lose also [KNOX 0x0]
2 - CF-Auto-Root which with u lose [KNOX 0x0] and non official rom so u lose OTA
and I think when u flash a stock rom u go back to 100% official state (right?)
Am I right so far?
Ok, now when I started my phone with Kies, I found that there is firmware upgrade is available to my phone as the attached pic, should i root first then upgrade or upgrade then root (i used to use mobile odin pro to inject the root during flashing a new stock rom to keep the root)
If i upgrade via Kies would I lose my apps, settings, data and root (upgrade will wipe), I know that OTA will keep every thing but not sure about root?

Do 1. URDLV first on your current (MJ1) firmware version to get root without tripping knox. If you update to MJ7 first you will get a locked bootloader & will trip knox.
Then update to MJ7 using mobile odin pro 3.85 with a downloaded firmware from sammobile.com
Doing nandroid means installing a custom recovery which would currently trigger knox - no way around this atm. I also want to flash custom recovery and roms, but I'm waiting a couple of months in case a knox-safe method is found.

Can u explain what u mean by : If you update to MJ7 first you will get a locked bootloader
Can u confirm with yes or no: when u flash a stock rom u go back to 100% official state and [KNOX 0x0], after flashing a custom recovery

Custom roms can be installed knox safe

Once Knox is tripped there is NO WAY to reset atm.... You can flash anything you want because it isn't changing to 0x0 again, currently...
Installing root through URDLV WON'Trip knox warranty if you are on MJ1 firmware. As soon as you upgrade your firmware to MJ7 you get a root unfriendly bootloader. Doesn't matter what you use it will trigger Knox 0x1 permanently.
If you root at MJ1 then use Mobile ODIN Pro to upgrade to MJ7 you should be able to go back to MJ1 easily and not have Knox triggered as MOP doesn't flash bootloaders.

[Q} ODIN and stock Firmware Update (wth knox)

I updated 3 weeks ago to BTU MH8 with knox components and all is perfect., Knox warranty 0x00....
Since my phone originally was ITV (Italy) I'd like to recover the original CSC to ITV with the new firmare ITV MHB released today.
Is there any problem, with knox installed, to flash MHB with Odin? I'm going to sell my S4 and I prefer to return it to the original status.
Thank you

I would like to know if you can flash with KNOX (using ODIN)?
Guys, all NEW FW's have KNOX on-board and most important the NEW irreversible Bootloader.
You can flash new FW through Odin but it MUST be newer or the same version as your current build.
For example, if you're using XXUDMH8 then you can flash ONLY firmwares with XXU.. on the beginning and anything greater than ...MH8
You can use XXUDMHB as it's newer FW.. it goes from 1-9 and A-Z..
Simple as that..

Are you 100% sure about that?
I heard once you have KNOX warranty void 0x1 then no matter what firmware you're trying to flash Odin will fail. Even if it's a newer firmware.
I hope you're right and they're wrong.

Yeah, DO NOT flash any Custom Recovery nor Root and your status will stay at 0x0..
You can flash any newer FW but think twice as you can't go back if you don't like it...

On the S3 if I used MobileOdin to flash a new Rom it wouldn't update the bootloader. Can someone confirm the same is true on the S4?

That would probably be an instant KNOX warranty void due to the fact that Mobile ODIN only runs on rooted devices...
But I'm not gonna experiment with it due to the uncertainty of it...

Nahhh... It's not possible, if you flash non-knox (knox freer) ROM, and then your phone still asks for KNOX - Idk... Just try to reflash your firmware.
Try to go to custom recovery menu (flash it if you don't have), that in the CWM (or phillz - whatever) try to format /system and /data. Wipe data and cache, try to flash firmware via odin again.. That's my solution and will probably works.
But - check your apps list - if you can find app KNOX or somethings like that (in the name "knox"), download root uninstall app, delete knox notification and knox... Just search

You have already the warranty bit. It is related to Knox warranty void 0x0. It cannot be reseted if it is 1
This firmware PDA_I9500XXUEMJ9_KNOXFREE_ROOT_ODEX if you flash it, your bit will change to 1 because the bootloader sees that the firmware pda is custom

I want to make it clear that I updated to android 4.3 officially.I have not rooted, not installed any custom recovery ..nothing !
So till now my phone status is fully offical .Warranty bit is 0 too.
Now I wish to root and i clearly know Knox bootloader will void the warranty.
But what I am trying to ask is do I have the knox secured bootlooder ? or a knox free bootloader ?
Because I only see the warranty bit and there is no mention of knox in download mode.
This is an image from 19505. There is a mention of knox. But look at the image in my first post - knox is not mentioned in download mode.
If it is not a knox secured bootloader , I only need to worry about the binary counter .And According to this thread , flashing pre rooted rom will not increase binary counter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317105&page=5
Sorry if am making all this confusing !

You have already the knox secure bootloader,I can see in your download mode the warranty bit 0!!!
if your warranty bit is 0, you are in warranty but if it is tripped to 1 you cant reset it. I9505 is a LTE quad core Model and not I9500 the octa core Model.
In our I9505 model, we can see the knox warranty void 0x0 if we have the secured knox bootloader.
But in yours I9500 model, you have the warranty bit 0, it is similar to knox warranty void 0x0 and it tells that you have the secured knox bootloader.

Not possible using stock Samsung bootloader. That 4.3 unknoxed custom rom should have been flashed from stock 4.2.2 over 4.2.2 bootloader, so you would have any kind of Frankenstein, 4.3 rom over 4.2.2 bootloader, and you will never be able to flash a stock rom without consider to get the knox warranty bit. Once installed stock 4.3 with Knox bootloader, warranty bit will always be present, so if you try to flash or root anything the bit will be activated.

It would have been interesting to at least try some new test in the process - for instance I have seen some intriguing reports from N900W8 models where they have apparently installed some version of xnote (custom rom pre-rooted) without tripping knox presumably by somehow using stock Samsung kernel and stock Samsung recovery (I repeat, that was THEIR claim, not mine, but more research and testing on the subject would be nice).
I'm one of those people. I installed the Mexican update, then rooted using Cf autoroot, then installed CWM and flashed X-Note with Katturbine kernel and I'm still knox 0x0 :/

I am also on MJ7, N900t and I had have two questions if possible.
1. Do you recommend me to upgrade to kitkat then to have custom rom or just to root my 4.3 then to have a custom rom?
DrawnToLife
2. Can you please explain what you did step by step instructions to what you did, and if possible providing a link to the Mexican rom you referred to and the same CWM you used.
Thanks

That sounds very different from what I was expecting, and so far based on that I would say that it mostly seems to be a result of the N900W8 bootloader system rather than something very special that needs to be done when flashing stuff
Question specific for N900W8 - is it possible to downgrade MJ4 -> MJ1 on that phone? (since that would confirm that the W8 bootloader is quite different).

No, not possible to downgrade to MJ1 even when you came from MJ1 and upgraded to MJ4.

Thanks

Just to let you know, note 3 n9005 is otherwise called note 3 LTE, anything with 5 at the end like i9305, i9505, is the LTE variant.
Coming to question of root, that method will work, its called CF-auto root and the latest package can be downloaded from
http://download.chainfire.eu/352/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hlte-hltexx-smn9005.zip
But this will void your warranty as KNOX counter will get tripped to 0x1.
Having said that anybody who is on 4.4.2(any version), if they were not rooted before, will get KNOX 0x1 (warranty Void), if they try to root.

This should be stickied somewhere, because as someone who is still within the first 24 hours of reading about this device, it is not clear at all.
I just got a Note 3 that is still on 4.3 Jelly Bean, Kies is telling me to update as follows:
Current firmware version : PDA:MJ7 / PHONE:MJ7 / CSC:MJ1 (VIA)
Latest firmware version : PDA:NB4 / PHONE:NB1 / CSC:NB1 (VIA)
I am trying to find out if I can do this safely or not, at the moment my Note 3 is stock out of the box.
If what you write is right, then I should NOT update using Kies now, but root first, if my goal is to keep Knox warranty 0x0.
But how, if chainfires method is also triggering it?
If I had root I could use Mobile Odin and that doesn't trigger Knox?
I have spent several hours reading the subforums for the Note 3 as of now, it's still not clear, I think some more things need to be stickied and updated.
What would the best steps be from MJ7 stock?

You will trip Knox unless you're firmware is MJ1 or lower... You have been warned...

Not really, if you are looking up ways to root without tripping Knox then you generally stumble across the URDLV thread and it has this in BIG RED letters across the top... URDLV was a sticky in Original Developement forum...
AFAIK the only way to root 4.4.2 is to downgrade it to 4.3 before MJ4 then root it using URDLV method. Here's a site on how this can be done.
http://www.thebitbag.com/root-your-...ut-tripping-samsung-knox-security-suite/73295
Disclaimer : I have not try this method and not responsible if you brick your phone.
As others have posted, there's currently no method to reset the Knox counter once it is tripped. The bounty is still out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52095753#post52095753

AFAIK aside from N900W8, you cannot downgrade 4.4.2 to 4.3.

KNOX.....How will it affect me?

Hi, my phone is less than a week old, I want to root it in order to debloat it initially, but with the possibility of at some point going totally custom.
Now I know there's virtually no way of modifying without tripping KNOX (towelroot does not work with my OS release)......what I need are some clear answers (I've seen a lot of conflicting information) as to what tripping KNOX will mean for the device....
So here are my questions....
1) if I go fully custom, will I be able to return to full stock with Odin?
2) if I return to full stock, will I be able to receive OTA updates?
3) with a tripped device, will I see a KNOX message on normal start up of the phone?
4) is my warranty totally screwed even If I have a totally unrelated hardware issue?
5) is EU Regulation (1999/44/CE) ANY REAL help, or can manufacturers interpret it in their favor?
Thanks in advance......Keith.

1) Yes, you just need to download firmware from sammobile and flash it with Odin
2) By going to fully custom you trip knox to 0x1 and theoretically you can`t get OTA updates but I received it after I had knox 0x1 and on fully stock ROM
3) No
4) Yes if you send it to Samsung service
5) I don`t even know what that is
Thank you for your reply.....
Number 5 is an EU ruling that covers consumer protection and statutory warranty and it *appears* to contradict what Samsung says about KNOX voiding warranty.....The thing is, I'm not a lawyer so I can't be 100% certain......
Sent from my SM-G900F
Honestly i don't know if that EU rulling has any real application or at least it doesn't in every country because Samsung or their repair centers will check for knox and will use that excuse to avoid fixing the phone under warranty for something that a rom or mod wouldn't cause.
But it also depends on who repairs your phone and if they check that or not, so is really just rolling the dice.
Lol...I guess you're right.....
I'm gonna root this beast anyway, it's just that it would have been good to get a watertight legal perspective first......
It's a shame that the legal profession seems to have little interest in rooting their phones.....

If you follow the steps of the tutorial here on the s5 section of xda you shouldn't have a problem with knox. I rooted my s5 and it didn't trip knox, the only thing that changed was the status from "oficial" to "custom", but after reflash a stock rom on odin and not rooting it, it went back to saying "official", so they can't claim i rooted the phone.
So, as long as you keep stock (not custom recovery and custom roms) and just root following the steps on the tutorial, it should be fine.
Many of the big companies use root detection systems and don't support root and they use that to decide if they fix the phone or not. Most of the times the problem is unrelated to software but they still claim it. Its a bit of a grey are and depends on the company. I do remember reading that there were some countries where root was considered legal and i think the UK was one of them, so i might get a positive reply from them but im not sure.
Are you talking about this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699648
If so, I already tried towelroot and it failed, which means I have to downgrade to an earlier version of the OS in order to root.....The only trouble with that being that I looked on sammobile and there didn't appear to be an earlier OS from my carrier.......
Sent from my SM-G900F
No, this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-triggering-knox-2nd-method-t2843044
That's the one i followed without flag knox. If towelroot didn't give you knox 0x1, then you can try that method to keep 0x0 when you root.
Ah ok cheers mate.......
So let me see if I've got this right......
First the build and baseband numbers on my phone both say ANG2.
So.......
1) Odin (3.09) flash ANE2 kernel.
2) Reboot, install towelroot and root
3) Reboot into download mode and reflash ANG2 kernel.
4) Reboot as normal.
No data wipes required?
Won't re flashing the original kernel kill root?
Can I use mobile odin to re flash the original kernel?
Edit.......just had a thought, could the flash kernel that mobile odin uses trigger KNOX?
Sent from my SM-G900F
Ah.....don't think it's gonna work mate.....just put my glasses on and had a closer read......
It says to have towelroot installed before flashing the temporary kernel......
I can't even get towelroot to install.....Every time I try I get a pop up box appearing that says something about security. If I press install anyway, it simply fails........

That's it!
I don't remember making any wipes, so i don't think they are needed.I followed those stepsand the kernel didn't change the root.
I don't know if you can use mobile odin, i would use the pc version just to be sure.
Also don't forget these steps:
5. DISABLE REACTIVATION LOCK
6. IF YOUR DEVICE IS ENCRYPTED, DECRYPT IT

That security warning is probably because you have the option to not allow unkown apps to install, which is on by default. Go to settings-security-tick unknown sources and untick app verification
Uh......probably being thick, but never seen this version of odin before. Which button do I click to insert the kernel?

Keep us posted on their reply. But honestly i don't think it will change much from the "it voids the warranty" claim they like to use
