is it just me or do smartphones love to kill sim cards?! When I bought my g1 in late 2008 I needed a new sim card 3 days later. Last year the sim died again. Tonight looks like sim card is dead on my 3wk old HD2. I'm glad I have a few extras at home since the t-mobile store likes to charge 25 dollars for a new one. I was on a call before I went into the gym and when I got out I went to resume a call and no service, I'ts been an hour 3 resets later and no service.
Sim cards suck!!
I've been using the same SIM for the last 3 years with no problems, so must be just you. And you should stop going to the store that charges you $25, T-mobile will replace them for free if they are faulty.
The original that was replaced after i bought the g1 was 5yrs old. It's been less than a year and half and I've had to replace 3 sim cards. I have the one that came with the HD2 I'll take up to the store tomorrow and have it replaced. I put my wife's sim card in the phone and service fired right so I now know it's the sim.
I have never had one fail. I have had the same one for several years as well. One I used to use even had a huge dent in it that almost past through it.
ive never heard of a sim card failing, not just out of the blue. Ive had my current sim about 5/6 years. Maybe you should review your sim card insertion and extraction process! hehe
I had 3 cards fail in my BB 8320. They just failed out of the blue. One of them failed right after I got off a call. T-mobile replaced them all for free though. The person who replaced one of them commented that they were replacing a lot of SIM cards in 8320s. My wife never had to replace her SIM card in the exact same phone, it is now happily in her HD2.

Yes I do power it off before that, considering you have to remove the battery to remove the sim.
This is strange.
My wife and I have the same SIM cards that we got four years ago when moving to Austin.
Her sister is now using her second one, not sure if she changed it due to a problem or what though.
Oh, and I have used the same card in 8 different phones over the years, that I can recall.
I got this phone on eBay for about 350$, today I received it in the mail and surprisingly it came with a sim still attached to its enclosing.
The package is full everything is included... headphones, manuals, cables...etc
I find it very strange to include a brand new sim...
I have sent an email through eBay asking seller about the source and sim...etc
I dunno what the answer would be or if there will be an answer at all!
Can this be stolen? what are the scenarios?
maybe its a pay as you go sim card,
Where was the sim found exactly? if it's second hand then it could be the previous owners. If it's new then it's either a pay as you go card, as already suggested or a contract sim card waiting to be activated.
It could also be a stolen phone but for $350 i doubt. Easiest way to tell is if it came with the shipping screen protector on it. It has the words "to prevent damage please remove from pants pocket before sitting down" or something like that.
Well, phone is like new t-mobile USA, seller says in auction:
"Title says it all, HD2 new in box, opened to test and used for about one hour. Locked for tmobile but easy to unlock. Great phone and one of the best displays I have ever seen but have to sell. All sales are final and are AsIs. Warranty for 11months through tmobile is still valid by imei"
I just don't want to get into any kind of trouble for buying potentially stolen property, should I call t-mobile?
Phone contained few family pictures, no call history, when I click on software information is showed 7 min of outgoing call and almost 2 min of incoming call.
This is the weirdest phone deal I ever made on eBay !!!!
I shouldn't worry about it. I'd guess it is a t mobile payg card, because the phone will still be locked to tmo, so the seller is including one. That way if some dim wit buys it and tries to put a different network sim in and it doesnt work, the seller can say 'hey, i gave them a sim'. (i'm an ebay seller, ebay are [email protected], take money offa ya at the slightest complaint from a buyer.)
The hours testing sounds fair but only 11 months warranty? how long has this guy had it? overall it sounds above board and if it is nicked you actually have proof you had no idea as long as you take a copy of the item description and keep the invoice
TMobile USA version of the HD2 comes with a Tmobile sim so that you just have to call tmobile (number on the sim) and provide the sims number to activate it (this is so that if you bought the phone via phonecall to tmobile and not in a tmobile store, you can use the phone no problem). That's most likely what you're referring to.
Seller replied to my question saynig:
"I kept the sim card since it was linked to my personal data and
with my address book. It was purchased at a tmobile corporate
store just over 30 days ago and can be checked with tmobile
customer care by imei"
I guess that's an acknowledgment that he bought it himself.
i guess so but it does put a big question over where the sim card that came with it came from because if he kept the original what the hell is the one you have?
I can imagine only one scenario (if he is being truthful). He was already a T-Mobile customer when he purchased the package, and he just shoved his old sim in (the one that contains his contacts), he didn't need the new sim included in the package so he left it intact.
I just received my brand new Xperia Play yesterday.
It was purchased from ebay and was brand new in the box.
It was advertised as an unwanted upgrade as well as being unlocked.
However, yesterday I tried my international simcard which did not work, vodafone simcard and even after taking it to carphonewarehouse & orange trying a further 2 simcards, it fails to read ANY simcard regardless of company.
I have just a week to solve this problem since I am on holiday in the UK and have to leave nexr weekend.
Based on the above problem, what do you experts think the problem is?
I tried factory resettings, default settings, etc, still not reading any simcards.
The phone obviously is no good to me since it cannot make/receive calls/texts.
Aside from this problem, everything else is working perfectly.
Could this be a hardware issue or software? How can I figure out the problem.
Since time is a factor I don't have time to send it back and wait for repairs or a replacement.
Should this fault be quick & easy to solve I don't mind paying £20 or so if it can be fixed, beats waiting weeks for a replacement.
Any ideas you guys have please feel free to give me any ideas to try to get this phone reading sim cards.
Thanks guys/girls...
EVERY time I turn on my phone I get the following message ''please insert simcard and restart your phone'' even though the simcard inside the phone is working perfectly fine...
It sounds like a H/W fault... contact the seller and/or paypal

I did indeed contact the seller and am awaiting his answer...
Is the fault easy, quick and more or less cheap to fix from a local mobile phone shop?
If I was to download & use a custom rom, could this possibly fix the problem?
In the past I've had problems with bluetooth/wireless lan refusing to work even though everything else did.
After trying another rom it then worked.
This makes me wanna try another rom before returning the phone and waiting weeks for a replacement.
The seller however got back to me saying it was all working before, he has no idea why it's not reading simcards and to return it should it not work.
I will update the rom and report back.

Flashing a new ROM won't repair the problem. What country was the seller in when he sold it to you? Maybe it's still sim locked. Try to unlock it using a 3rd party.

It was a UK seller to a UK buyer (me)
I've tried 4 different simcards of all different networks, not reading any simcard.
The phone appears to be unlocked according to the seller.
Can this issue be easily & cheaply fixed in a local mobile repair shop?
if its not been bootloader unlocked and then ota bricked then it sounds to me like its blacklisted in other words reported lost/stolen or fraudulant and so pretty much useless to anyone in the UK

Hmmm, how can I find out WTF is actually wrong with the phone?
The LAST thing I wanna do is return it, and then waiting ages for a replacement or refund.
Is it worth me taking the phone to a mobile repair place and asking them to look into this?

dont think its sim locked since its saying please insert sim card if it was locked more than likely itll say please enter network unlock code
does sound like a hardware issue do you have the battery cover on when your trying it?
i know my play when the battery cover is off the sd card wont work etc maybe its the same with the sim card
sure i dont have to ask your putting in the simcard correctly right?
shame nonetheless it might be more expensive to try and fix it since parts are not easily available
The sim card works without battery cover... If you inserted the card in properly... It should work.... If not then refund it.

Best thing to do is pop it into an orange shop and ask them to check the imei on the blacklisting website, if it comes up blocked you know for certain. If it not then it could be a hardware issue but i doubt it. Good luck

This is a good idea.
Anyway I've just come back from a few mobile repair shops.
After checking the phone, the engineer said it appears to be blocked and will only work outside the country.
Should this be the case, it's not a major issue since I live in Dubai. I happen to be in London for a holiday.
The phone was bought from ebay, and if the handset is indeed blocked then the seller is taking the piss since he simply mentioned the phone being an unwanted upgrade as well as unlocked!
I will contact the seller now and see what he says.
it will work mostly everywhere except the uk
This is the only problem with buying phones off eBay, it happend to my sister twice. The good news is that it will work in other country's if it's ota blocked, as it just means that the imea number don't work with UK networks as they have a UK database with all phones that have been reported lost or stolen.
The problem with eBay/PayPal is you only have so many days to file a dispute, so the seller waits till times up then reports it lost or stolen then claims on there insurance, or in some cases take out a new contract just to sell the phone on eBay then not pay the bill. There's a chav lad near me that pays ppl to take out contracts and pays them so much for the phone, what these ppl don't realise is there ruining there credit rating.

Yeah, I've had quite bad experience using ebay even when buying from ebayers with high & perfect feedback.
Anyway the seller got back to me and swears it is a genuine phone that was claimed from an insurance company and is unlocked and sim free.
He said he tried 2 different sim cards with the phone before advertising it.
My question is how did it previously work yet now it refuses to read any sim?
I may take the phone to an alternative shop and ask them to look into this.
Could it be the sim/sim reader is faulty or damaged and therefore not reading sim cards?
if it was blocked by networks it would just scan for networks and not be able to register on one, it wouldnt say insert sim.
This has been badly flashed IMHO and to my knowledge there is no fix
Go into Service Menu and check Simlock Status:
Dial this:
*#*#SERIVCE#*#*
There are also different Service Tests. For me this problems sounds like the "faulty" method which was used to fix the OTA-Brick on unlocked bootloader!
If it is this problem, your phone will be simlocked (not network-locked!!!) to ANY sim card. And you have to unlock via Software -> Omnius/SE-Tool etc. etc.
Regards
Thanks everyone for your support.
As of now I have no idea of what the problem is.
All I can say is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is in a repair shop.
It will cost me £45 and on tuesday it should be repaired regardless.
Should they be able to fix the item, great, otherwise if they are unable to fix it then I will get a refund.
I will get back to you lot on tuesday with the results!
My poor 24 hour old brand new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is in for repairs already and it's still got all the front and back protectors still on...
I've had the simcard reading thing happen to me a few times. After a few reboots, it would be fine again.
Hi, my galaxy s4 than yesterday shows me the message that the sim card was disconnected and I have to restart the device to connect sim again. This puts me quite often (about once every three hours) but slowly doing more and more often until now arrived to do every 5 minutes. Do so even when I closed. What can I do;
Snap. It no longer recognises my SIM now. Ordered a new one to see if it that was the problem. If not, replacing the sim/sd card part is next.

I had the same problem.I was using a cut down sim with a nano> micro sim adaptor.Bought a micro sim and basically works perfect.
Have seen other people needing a sim holder/tray replacement though.

I doubt if you'll be given the new phone. If I'd be you, I'd ask for repair.... why? Because 80% of the phones sent as replacement is refurbished and may have the other, hidden issues.
The devil you know is better
Like said its already been sent away three weeks I had to wait and a week of that was waiting for the repair centre to send my phone back according to the tracker

phone was working fine, I updated to 4.5.5 after reboot the phone would not connect to a mobile network said emergency calls only. spoke to OnePlus suspiciously instantly telling me to contact my provider. I did, said everything was fine on there end, tried my SIM in another phone same emergency calls only. Got a different SIM to work on my oneplus so gave the benefit of the doubt. got my lazy butt down to the store to get a replacement SIM, it worked then about an hour ago stopped again. When I called back to tell them the new one was also broken they tried to fob I me off with 'have you spoke to your carrier's no matter what I want a new phone as this one is defective. I spoke to a manger the turn around is going to take all week! I offered to purchase a new one but they can't assure me it will ship tomorrow even if I pay the extra shipping. of the 2 packages I ordered the quickest was 4 days with the expedited shipping, I'm just outside london. should I get another brand? I do like the PHONE the service is poor. others have had similar issues appently, which means when they told me to speak to the carrier they where deceiving me. Ok just wrote that and now it's back up again, rebooted and gone again..... Can't be asked to inform OnePlus they do not seem to care.
So new phone or replace this OnePlus 5? Not impressed with the level of sevice

I`am running 2 sim cards and i`am running 4.5.5 and no issue so far. All working flawless. Have you tried other simcards (friends or family) to see if the issue remains?
I did try in other devices. I am only using 1 SIM slot, it has broken 2 different SIM cards in the same slot. Sorry I am poo at explaining things

Sounds like a hardware issue to me, i'd suggest you visit a OnePlus authorized service center and get that checked out. Replace the slots maybe? And if it's not a possibility then replace the phone.
Thanks for the replies. I have decided to return the phone and get something different. The customer service was nothing but deceitful, they knew others where having similar issues and tried to blame the carrier 3 times. If they where honest from the start I would get a new one. Thanks for the second opinion have a lovely day guys
