Not sure if this is posted in the right place, but has anyone found the water indicator on the S4?
My phone no longer vibrates, no matter what sound mode its in or what type of message or call is sent to my phone. I have checked all my settings and everything is set to vibrate. I've rebooted my phone, and left the battery out for sometime and still not vibrating.
I was working out and am afraid moisture may have gotten in the phone, which is causing this problem. I can get it replaced through warranty, but want to make sure I didn't trip the moisture indicator.
Thanks in advance.
There is one on the battery

While XDA does not condone fraud, I would suggest closely following the iFixit teardown of the i337.
There you'll find the other liquid damage indicator(s). There is at least one on the inside of the case, I didn't bother to read all the way through again to see if there's another. Just read and check the pics. They're pretty obvious.
Also, if you search the web, you'll find ways to easily chemically reverse the indicator. That is, if for some reason the indicator has falsely changed. Again, neither I, nor XDA, condones fraud.

Thank you I appreciate it, I took the phone apart with the iFixit tear down, and my phone looks exactly the same. The bottom of the first page they show the water indicator as red (mine is red as well). But I thought if the water indicator is red, it was water damaged?

They may have switched chemical formulations. A "water indicator" could be any color, and switch to almost any other color depending on how it's designed. Perhaps to combat fraud? No idea. But at least yours is good, so no worries.
As far as the vibrate issue goes, could be any number of things. Before assuming a mechanical failure though, try this:
Go into "service/test mode", by typing *#0*# in the regular phone dialer, just like you were dialing a number. You should see a menu of buttons pop up. Click "vibration". Screen will go blank, and it will test the vibrator motor. If that doesn't work, just for sh!ts and giggles, try flashing back to a stock ODIN ROM, then try the service mode test again.
If after all that, it still doesn't work, you have a valid warranty claim with Samsung. Assuming there are no cracks/obvious physical damage, and no water damage, that should replace it for free.
And, not to be a thanks whore, but if I helped, feel free to hit the "thanks" button on my posts.

Well, to you I'd suggest the same thing. Go to the above mentioned diagnostic mode, and see if the sensor is actually working or not.
That's the same first step tool the techs who deal with RMA/support use. So go ahead and try it out. If it doesn't work, try stock, and if not, send that sucker back to Samsung.
Don't really see the big deal.
I thought that water indicator is that white circle, above the 2 golden pins left of the the camera. Looks like it would be the water indicator.

I'm having same problem - no vibrate. I've been on KangaKat ROM since December. Vibration just stopped a short while ago.
I tried the USSD code you provided. A dialog box popped up saying "USSD code running" but then a second popped up saying "Unable to process request." Is this because I am on a custom ROM or might there be another reason? If I missed the answer to this in other parts of the forum, I apologize for the inconvenience, but I did try to search. Thanks in advance.

Ok so I don't know if watermark would be the right word. But that is the best way to describe it. I had my phone in the case in my purse. Woke up and went to use it and it had a perfect rectangle in the middle of the phone that looks like maybe the screen has been pressed to hard and never let go of. I will show a picture to let you see what I'm talking about. I've never dropped my phone. And I know nothing happened to it because I was sleeping and it was never touched. I've tried to contact htc, no response. And I purchased my phone off of craigslist so not sure on the warranty and that sort. But I am very sad and hope that maybe you guys can help me. I've searched high and low but every search comes up with nothing, or not exactly the same problem I'm having. I've soft reset and hard reset but to be completely honest with you I think that It has nothing to do with the software but the actual hardware.
Thank you in advance!
it is called newton-rings you can read more about that on wikipedia
you can find discusion in here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531329
hope that HTC will help you with this
oh thank you so much that's all I needed was a name for it!
I have noticed a mark like yours on my screen for the past few days, just thought it was about a damp under the screen protector, so today whilst installing wm6.5 I decided to remove the screen protector, only to find that the phone no longer responded to touch screen! looks like ill be in contact with HTC tomorrow about getting it sent back for repair.
I don't know if I am completly correct when writing this, so please correct if I am totally wrong.
This is not actually, per definition, newton rings. As described on wikipedia, newton rings is reflection of light between two surfaces where one is flat and the other is spherical. The width of the light and dark rings are supposed to become smaller the further out from the center of the spherical surface you go.
I have not opened my device yet, but I have a feeling that it is som kind of fluid that is doing this. I actually have a drop of some kind of fluid (probably water) coming in from the right side of the screen, just above center.
I will post back as soon as I have opened it.
EDIT: Ok, it seems I could be very wrong as I found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=560051
BUT, i still have drop of water (I think) coming in from the right side of the screen.
So I was cooking away in the kitchen and knocked my G1 off the edge of the work surface and it fell screen down on the floor. The force was enough to pop the back case off.
When I picked it up the screen was broken. Not physically cracked but the image was absolutely screwed. It now is just black with vertical lines, usually white but sometimes with colour. I have a suspicion that perhaps a cable connecting the screen has maybe come loose.
Can anyone with hardware knowledge of the G1 confirm this?
In short, I am asking if anyone knows how I can fix this!!
I had insurance, but unfortunately I cancelled a few months before this incident, not to mention T-Mobile Fonesafe won't replace broken G1s with G1s anymore, only G2s. Seeing as I prefer a hardware keyboard, I'd prefer to fix my G1.
Please help people!
It does sound like a dislodged ribbon cable.. but the only way you're gonna find out for sure is to open 'er up. Here's the service manual:
http://mikechannon.net/PDF Manuals/HTC Dream SM (A04).pdf
Good luck. These smartphones can be a nightmare to work on.. Especially for a fat-handed spack like me.
Excellent link, thank you very much.
It certainly looks like a mammoth task to disassemble the G1.
Referring to the service manual you posted, on page 32, is the second image down with caption "Disconnect the display FPC" the potentially offending cable that I need to look at?
I should say now I have no previous experience in disassembling (or reassembling) mobile phones
Further reading confirms my inital thoughts. Page 91, point 4.
4.Unusual Vertical / Horizontal lines or partial display
(1) Check the connection of LCD FPC whether is properly connected.
(2) Try to cold boot the unit then tries again.
(3) Try to re-flash the ROM code.
(4) Try with another LCD.
(5) Try with another Main Board.
(6) Replace LCD if necessary
(7) Replace Main Board if necessary.
(8) Once the defective part has been identified, verify it again with the defective part whether the symptom
could be duplicated

It doesn't actually confirm anything.
You'll note points 1 and 3....
I also suggest that you try out point 2 a few times before ripping the thing apart....

Judging my your response I'm guessing you didn't look at the manual.
By point 4. I was referring to the symptom: "Unusual Vertical / Horizontal lines or partial display." Which is exactly what is wrong with my phone.
The first point of call as listed before is to "Check the connection of LCD FPC". Seeing as I dropped my phone it is very likely that it has become disconnected.
I very much doubt re-flashing or cold booting will help. My phone has had no defects until the incident.
Not attempted to fix it yet. I'm going to wait until I get a few hours free.
Today I noticed that my HD2 vibrates strangely, it sounds like a shaving machine when vibrating
I performed many soft resets, hard reset, then I flashed an offcial ROM, SPL, etc. but nothing works. I guess the problem is related with the vibration hardware.
I will be sending my phone to HTC service tomorrow, and let you know about the results.
Anybody faced the problem? Or any suggestion before sending the device to service?
Thanks...

There was some issue posted a few times where the camera flash was pressed in, and was interfering with the vibration somehow.

Is there an easy solution or should I hand it to the service?

Can't seem to find them... anyway, the flash housing is nearly directly over the vibration motor thing, and if the plastic flash cover gets loose it could very well push the flash housing down (it's not very secure, pretty soft metal actually) and block the motor.
Just check if the plastic flash cover is pushed in from the rest of the body.
E: If it is, then get it repaired by warranty, as it's not worth opening it up to fix yourself and voiding your warranty.

And yes, I handed the phone to the service today. I hope they do not break other things when trying to fix this issue

Hi,
My Leo stopped vibrating. I saw your posts and checked the camera flash. It was indeed pushed in. My warranty was not valid, so I tried to fix it myself. It was actually very easy. I followed a video showing how to disassemble the Leo . As soon as the housing is removed, we have access to the flash plastic cover. I've just snapped it in very carefully et voilá: the phone is back to its own self!
Many thanks for the tip. I would never have guessed it was related to the flash cover!!

My phone is still not back from the service
I have my phone back...
Finally, I have my phone back. The service report tells me that they have changed a part responsible for vibration. I checked the vibration functionality and actually it is working fine now. One surprise however is that the flash cover still appears to be pushed in.
Same problem
My TMobileUS HD2 is having the exact same problem - no vibration at all, even after hard reset. I also see the camera light's assembly is no longer correctly positioned in the body as it should be. It seems that the lower end is pulling into the body of the phone.
I treat my phone very gently, so I'm sure this didn't happen from rough treatment. Given that it's happening on a number of contiinents, this looks like a design defect.
TMobile demanded that I send it in for warranty service.
No Vibration Either
I have a TMOUS HD2, and I may have been the cause of this happening after reading this. I have no clue what you're talking about, but I have dropped the phone a few times and though the problem didn't happen right after a drop, it was just odd how it started. I had it set to vibrate when I pressed any keys, and then I was texting and it stopped. So... the only thing that I've seen that is a case that I only seem to have, my phone vibrates AT WILL, but when it does, it's very raspy and sounds very 'sick' and loud. So, I am not about to open my phone. I'm tech savvy enough, but in no way have I ever tinkered with hardware. I got my HD2 back in May, so I'm hoping that I have a warenty through HTC at least. I haven't contacted anyone about this, so is it my best bet to just send it to HTC or contact T-Mobile? And I have insurance, but I purchased my phone from Walmart. lol. Help?
I just came across this thread....
my vibrate function has been broken for several months and I've been delaying sending in for repair because I'm afraid of how long it will take (plus, it is the Australian version so I dont know if HTC North American will actually repair it under the current warranty)
I noticed that the bottom part of my flash does in fact seem to be pushed in. I'm considering doing what Maria did (opening it herself and popping the flash back into place). Does anyone have a sense of how long the repair takes from HTC?
Thanks
VIBRATION and FLASH PROBLEM
i'm having the same problem... lower part of the flash is pushed in. and vibration sometimes functioning sometimes not... but worst my FLASH NOT WORKING AT ALL...
Now having the same problem. This is a design flaw if I've ever seen one.
Same problem here, vibration was not working, but I just fix it!
I bought this T-Mobile HTC HD2 off eBay, and turns out that the vibration was not working!!
Once I found out this thread and the information about how the flash cover was blocking the vibration motor from functioning, I was able to confirm this was exactly what was happening!
So, I decided to open up the phone. I did not had to extract the entire screen piece out, I just had to unscrew the four screws and use a "shower suction thingy" on the screen to help pull it out but just the top part (in other words, half way out), because I only needed access to where the flash cover was, and then I was able to use a thin screw driver to PUSH back the flash cover to it right position. Then, after putting everything back to its place, the vibrator motor started to work!!!
Maybe I will put some "super glue" on the flash plastic cover to secure from being accidentally being push in in the future. Anyways, thank you everyone here on the forum for sharing your ideas!
As a late follow-up to mine... I called HTC and got an RMA number. Put off mailing it in for 3 weeks while I backed it up and arranged a temporary phone.
Mailed it on a Friday. Had it back with a replaced back on Monday.
I was EXTREMELY happy with the customer service on this one!
Missed 3 calls today... realize phone is not vibrating. Check different things that should make phone vibrate... nothing...
Flash lens is not pushed in this time... I'm about a month out of warranty now. Wonder how this is going to go over
I had this exact problem occur a few days ago, and I opened it up and simply snapped the light cover back into place carefully. But my phone still wasn't vibrating, so I opened it up again and I saw that the black rubber around the vibrate motor was causing the part that creates the vibration to get stuck. I simply just snipped a bit away so that the it was free and ta da! However the vibration is still weak compared to before so I don't know how to fix that? hope this helps you, and if someone knows why the vibration might be weaker than before the problem started any help would be great. thanks
Hi to everyone. Well, the other day I was in my friends pool, and I left the phone on a table near the pool. The usb and headset connector were closed (double checked).
Ok, In some moment, my friend jumps to the pool, and some water goes to the phone. Because I've sent the phone to RMA when the earpiece got broken, I was thinking the waterproof was ****ed up (also, the a** holes that repaired it, rounded the screws ); and I was right. I've found some water vapor in the top of the screen, and if I press it, some water came out from the earpiece.
Instantainly, I've removed the battery and let the vapor dissapear (I've left the phone inside the house, in room temperature).
After the vapor goes away, I've tested it.
Although its still working, the system doesnt started anymore (boot loop on the cyanogen), also the Red led of the notification RGB led stayed on.
Now, I've flashed the stock Froyo sbf, so tomorrow I can call the RMA (although Personal of Argentina, doesn't pickup any call for tech. service anymore, ) and try to send it.
Because Im a little bit not-optimistic, I just want to ask if someone knows how to turn off the led (I was thinking on "echo 0 /sys/class/leds/red ... etc"), but maybe other solutions may work.
EDIT: Looks like if you charge the phone to 100%, the red led turns off (at least, it didn't turn on again)
EDIT2: The led turned on AGAIN. Im really starting to get angry. My idea to do "echo 0 /sys/class/leds..." failed, because the led its off (at least, that thinks the kernel).
Thanks in advice!
Funny u type the "F" word but ain't type the 2nd part off "ass****".
I wouldn't worry about the red light I sent mine in with it. They sent me a whole new replacement also with red light! U should be fine in my opinion. ¿ good luck!
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Hi. Well, I've charged it till 100% and the red light dissapeared. Kinda of strange, because the battery indicator says "60%". However, its likely impossible to contact the RMA of my carrier. Theyre always busy.
EDIT: The led turned on again..
Thanks

sorry, i didn't fixed it. also, some part in the LCD is blurred.
now i'm trial with the carrier for that
It's a good idea; I just received (last week) my phone back, they changed the whole "mainpiece". I had a camera "issue" (there were something in the lens).
Just don't tell for your carriers service the whole story and it'll be fine.
Actually, the whole story its true. I never opened the phone, neither modified anything related to the hardware.
Anyway, good luck with that!
I see, but in my carriers warranty the "swimming with phone" is denied; it's only spill-resistant as they wrote. (The phone could resist more of course, but they won't replace that.)

But it was a spill, he didn´t dive with it.
Anyways, i got the same problem, but my luck was a bit worse. Besides the red Led problem, the water screwed my LCD screen.
The technician charged me R$330 (or $175) to fix the phone. So I decided to do it myself and bought a new LCD on ebay ($33 with shipping), will replace it in a week or so.
Did anyone solved the red led problem?
Do i have to replace some hardware part that to fix the LED?
I dropped mine in a muddy puddle over a year ago ( everything was sealed), and the red lights been on ever since then, after that happened there was a tiny bit of vapur visable just to the left of the LED, but apart form the constant red LED which comes on as soon as the battery is inserted regardless of weather the phone is on or off everything seems OK.
The only downside is that i dont think it would survive another drop/spash as the bezel is now cracked ( top plastic part roughly above main earpeice to the headphone port ) does anyone know where i can obtain a Defy outer shell ( chasis) complete with gorilla glass/digitiser ec?
My father dropped his phone. The phones display isn't working anymore (kind of). It stays black. The LED works, the buttons light up, sounds function but the display is black. When pressing the home key the buttons light up for aprox. 1 second then turn off.

Since its just screen then just take it to them. Thought it was broken.
Although you have warranty, seems it would be hard to get it a service center to repair it without a cost to it. Best bet take it to a Samsung service center and try your luck(they will charge you more than likely). Seems the device is too damaged for normal operational use.

XDA does not condone doing things to circumvent OEM warranty. I think people can figure things out on their own.
Considering the device is under warranty, then just send it in for service. Clearly a connection came loose on the display, and disassembly will viod the warranty. Best left to professionals.

And I totally agree ^^^^^
Well, for info, I had an Iconia A501 tab (best tablet Acer made). It was a die-hard beast (until it became my 2.5yr old little girls tab):laugh::laugh:
After 1 year slamming around, dropped I don't know how many times, some nand became corrupted. Now, don't laugh, but I removed the MB and put it in the oven for a bit (10 or 12 min). And shazzam! Could reload the OS.
You see, these OEMs "cold solder" the connections, chips and such, and dropping can make them come undone or lose contact. So a bit of heat, then pressing the chips back in place, can sometimes work.
But some months later, I finally put it to rest. Just too much abuse :laugh::laugh:
Good luck Mate, hope they get it sorted.
