[Q] How could my Nexus 4 be laggy and choppy? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, this is a very fast phone. And it's got craploads of RAM. And I've never had it in use where over a GB of RAM was in use. Yet, when I'm close to that 1GB utilized state, the phone starts getting bogged down, and downright choppy in the launcher! How could this be????
This even happens in the widget selector screen, where my hacked GS2 with JB never, ever was choppy.
Could it be a rogue app? I just expect at this point in time (with the speed + Project Butter) to be done with choppy/laggy performance issues.

What exactly are you doing when it happens? I haven't noticed any issues like this yet. Just been using normal apps though.

I'm really just tooling around, using the device. Nothing special. I do have Tasker running in the background, but that's no CPU hog. I have Google+, Facebook, Twitter, etc. all installed and syncing, along with Gmail. But again it's not like they're all syncing constantly... just normal setup stuff.
I consistently am seeing jittery animation in the widget selection area of the launcher... no jerkiness at all on the homescreens or app drawer. Also, apps all run super fast and smooth.

Try turning wifi on and off (or toggling data if using the cell network). I had a similar sounding issue and it seemed related to background network usage. Specifically with some of the Google apps and background syncing. In my case the phone would get warm as well, so I'm sure the CPU was busy as well. Cyanogen with gapps fixed the issue, but a simple data wipe might have worked as well.

Absolutely no issue here with over 60 apps installed.

Not even the slightest lag here...Still Fast and smotth after one month!

I vote tasker is the culprit.

I noticed a slight bit of choppiness when I was using Google music, sending text messages and surfing the web but it was only temporary and have not seen any such problems since that day. Trying a master wipe or another rom would probably be best.

Use better battery stats to see if an app is running in the background constantly. If not try doing a wipe and not installing any apps at first to see if the lag is still there.

None here... UCed to 1026 and still smooth as glass. Full sync many background processes while multitasking to the fullest!

Yep, I think theres lag in every Android tablet I've played with. Googles min specs just aren't high enough for Honeycomb... Hopefully a bit more RAM and Quad Cores will fix it...
You know how you can install crappy software that runs at boot which will make even a core i7 with a good GPU and lots of RAM start lagging?
Yeah. Like that. Don't install lots of crap and expect the OS to handle it.

I've seen logs from users with 40+ boot services while trying to diagnose field issues with my apps.
The scary thing is I think it's more common than people who are careful about watching app behavior/installing minimal apps.
To make it worse, there's a lot of crappy software for Android. It's easy to cruft up your device.
Sometimes I almost wish for Apple's walled garden and non-multitasking app switching...

Custom rom for me such as team tiamat's latest takes away much of the lag. I also run adw ex launcher which pretty much takes away all the lag.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Hi all,
Well from day one i installed ADW EX as my launcher and only ever install apps i actually need and use as opposed to installing as many as i can because i can. So far i have yet to see any of the issues some users report and have never seen any lag, crashes or freezes maybe I've just been lucky but my Xoom has done all i wanted and more without issue so far.

I have over 100 apps on my xoom, stock 3.2 and it lags after being up for 6+ days. I think some devices need to be reset. I still had horrible keyboard lag on 3.1 after that update so I did a reset and it went away. Since the 3.2 all lag in the app drawer, home screens in different orientations, and opening of apps and menus is gone for me.

I have almost 300 apps, use ADWEX and Hammerhead Rom--everything zips right along. It's true that it begins to lag just a bit when I go a long time w/o rebooting.

im experiencing some serious lag. Not many apps installed but plenty of lag time.
Will suggest to try custom rom. It's easy. Before that may be some maintenance could help. Wipe cash and stuff. Meanwhile was thinking to try v6 supercharged script to illuminate lagging. Is there anyone have tried?
I m in stock but i nvr experience any lag .. except long boot time
its annoying. ive also experience this on my xoom wifi and i dont even have alot of apps installed. i have to reboot the tablet atleast once a day so it doesnt lag badly.
I noticed it too. It appears to have apps just sitting in a tray. If you open it, it never really gets dumped. Multitask just isn't killing these apps when idled for hours. If I am not switching between apps after an hour why keep it up?

Just like any other pc, just close 'em. I use Active Apps widget-just check it when my ram is getting low and close whatever is still active. No need to kill apps that aren't active, though.

And how exactly is it laggy? I get almost no lag, ever, on mine. And I've had the pleasure of owning quite a few tablets: XOOM, Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad, TouchPad, Viewsonic Gtab, and Nook Color. Out of all of them, the XOOM and Tab 10.1 were arguably the most responsive.
Prior to 3.2, GPU performance was horrible when the screen was in upside-down landscape. This resulted in horrible home screen lag. Thankfully, this has now been fixed. Portrait mode is still slow. But at 0 degrees landscape, it's fantastic.

Read up on the Android Process Lifecycle before complaining about it. App handling done in a very intelligent manner, optimizing speed and responsiveness. We have tons of memory on the device, so why not leave apps as background cached processes? Plus, as part of the process lifecycle, there's a very limited amount of resources that can be devoted to background processes that do not display an ongoing notification. It's on the order of ~5% CPU utilization.

Every browser I use lags... Like badly... Like really really badly

Like unusable badly.
I chrome, opera, boat, etc. They have started to lag. When I open the app, it takes forever to load and it it literally freezes because it doesn't respond to my touches. This past for about 10 to 15 seconds. This happens every time I go to a new website as well. Sometimes, even the whole entire tablet freezes, not just the browser app. I can't even go home, back or multitask. Then, the stupid dialog box saying "app is not responding do you wait to close, report, wait?" this lasts for 10 seconds or so
Then it finally unfreezes but then freezes again when I type in a new url.
Only really happens in browser and Tapatalk too, but only during startup for Tapatalk.
Should I factory reset? I don't want to lose my game save data though I'm stock btw.
This is where having a micro sd would be helpful. Stupid idiot OEMs omitting sd cards #smh

Try clearing your cache? I installed Cache Clear by JRummy and was amazed at over 1GB of cache data 800mb of which went to chrome... It ran much smoother after clearing it.

Ya I cleared cache on chrome and magazines. Still problem.

I find Chrome to be VERY laggy when I open it, takes ages to re-load the previous open tabs (even if it's only 1 or 2) and ages before I can open a new one and type a url etc, I am finding the Firefox beta to be much MUCH better, plus it supports Flash so I am now pretty much using it as my default browser.
Maybe you should try custom rom
try downloading androbench and then test your device. Browser lag is sometimes related to storage read speeds.
Use Xscope browser. Nuff said.

Xscope is very fast. In my experience it's the fastest. It's lightweight and has tons of features. I really suggest reading the help section to understand what options it has. Honestly I am amazed that xscope is not as popular as it should be. Everybody talks about dolphin/chrome but they don't come close to how easy and fast xscope is. I think that anybody who doesn't like xscope hasn't messed around with it enough to understand it. It literally feels way closer to chrome browser on the pc than chrome for android does. Use it for a few days and learn all it's features and I promise you will at least think a lot differently about it. There are quick gestures for switching tabs and you can even swipe across the screen to go back to your previous link (instead of pressing back button). That option is super handy! There are quick toggles for inverting the whites and blacks, desktop modes, full screen, lock orientation, etc. Trust me, just play with the option and you will love it I think.
I just reset my tablet since the browsers were lagging badly and freezing.
Everything seems to run s,other now, although I haven't installed my games yet lol

Look at your Google sync services. Possible some rogue app is problematic. I had stock browser sync issues at one point and just disabled sync for that service. Also, I think that Dolphin is the smoothest

I remember reading something about Google currents causing lag in jelly bean.
People said they fixed it by opening the currents app and disabling background sync.

Stuttering/Not Smooth

Hi, first post here!
I was just wondering if anybody else has noticed a little bit of stuttering/lack of smoothness when doing certain things? For example, scrolling down Facebook is not smooth at all for me, Twitter is a lot better but still isn't perfectly smooth! I also notice a bit of stuttering in games such as Temple Run. Also when I go to the menu and scroll right, the first time it stutters a bit, but then will be perfectly smooth after that!
I'm unsure whether this is just the phone, or there is a problem with mine/something slowing it down? I might have just not noticed it when I first got the phone, but I am sure everything was perfectly smooth before.
I would say, yes... but you said "not smooth at all". Is this even after it has loaded pictures, posts, statuses, etc? Maybe a video of this in action or something could help out.
For now, I'm going to say yes, I have noticed stuttering. It is slight and it occurs because the phone and apps are not perfect.
...
Yet.

Ok, but please: Do not blame your phone for the badliest-programmed-app-on-the-whole-planet-ever, named Facebook.
Really mate... These are app issues and have nothing at all to so with the phone.
I titanium bu to freez the Facebook app. It uses memory and battery 24/7..I use the tabr app for fb and twitter.

Problems with badly coded apps rather than the phone itself.

Could these apps be effected the rest of the phone though? Like I said the menus can stutter sometimes, where they didn't before, and also scrolling down in everything single app has definitely lost the smoothness it had!

I sometimes face this micro stuttering too on entering app center for the first time, entering and swiping the second time after the screen turned off doesn't stutter.

Dialer and Settings menu lag while entering

Howdie
Does anyone know why Dilaer and Settings menus appear so slow on Jelly Bean ROMs from time to time? I am running 4.1.2 AOSP ROM, MDO by knzo (based on Rasbean Jelly) to be exact but I find this behaviour on every single JB ROM I tried. It is very annoying when you need to make quick call, dialer enters, but not single contact appears for about 2-3 seconds. Same for the settings menu, you get black frame and then you need to wait for few seconds that actual menu items appears. Where is the problem?
Thanks
I might add. Every time I click on a box to type, the keyboard allways takes it sweet time to pop up.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda app-developers app
I agree with you. And this problem is worst in 4.2.1.
Sent from my Nexus S
I started a thread on this quite a while ago and no one found any solution to this... But it seems like the lag is not that bad in jellshot... The menu and dialer are appearing without any lag with Beladus 7.3 kernel
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
From my experience, after you flash a ROM everything is super fast and smooth! Start restoring back and/or adding apps, then
that's the point of no return! The occasional reboot helps things a little bit. Also if the dialler and settings haven't been accessed
for a while, I find this lag but if they've already been used and you can see them in the list of Recent apps, then they open up
a little faster.
Flash a GB ROM like oxygen (links are in this general section) or cm7 and use holo launcher/a browser with hardware acceleration. Runs super fast. Dialer and keyboard and other lags are nonexhistant on newer phones ( my girl has a Verizon gs3 with the jb update). Its just a 2 year old phone with a very small amount of ram for today's standards. Not much you can do about it.
Its like running windows 8 on a computer from 2004 that was built for windows xp. Difference is cell phones evolve at an alarming rate compared to computers... And the prices suck.

I was considering Oxygen for a while but I really hate GB browser and complicated UI. What kernel is suitable for Oxygen? I am surely gonna try it when I get some time.
At the moment I am running completely stock odexed 4.1.2, and lag still exists. Its like app enters but it needs few moments for data loads into it. I dont run heavy apps in memory, only ****ty Facebook client and Whatsapp...

Trinity kernel I was using for a few weeks. Was awesome.

As for browsing on gingerbread do yourself a favor and get opera browser. Its got proper hardware acceleration and is smooth

This shows an example of how good opera is. I just nanded back to my oxygen backup to confirm it as well. Smooth as stock browser in ics/jb

Tried Oxygen 2.3.2 with polobunny's launcher fix - partially fixed. Dialer is a lot, and I mean a lot faster, feels lighter to. But settings menu isn't, I think that the speed of opening is pretty much the same as JB, RAM management is killing it from time to time.
Second thing I don't like about GB is lack of butter. It really feels, for instance Facebook app is choppy from time to time, YouTube app is always lagging. Stock Browser, OTOH, isn't that bad as i remember on my other device (Huawei U8650) that i owned previously. Third thing, multitasking, I am not sure is it because of lack of this "bigmem" 60 MB more RAM or something, but multitasking for me is not as good as JB.
Opening some other apps aren't much faster than Jelly Bean. Camera is starting faster, Dialer as i previously mentioned is way more faster, Messaging and Play Store about the same speed, Google Maps and Gallery feels *slower* than JB. I am going to stick with it for couple of days more, but even now I think that there is no point in running GB ROM, custom JB ROM's are pretty darn good on NS.

[Q] Nexus 4 (or Android?) stuttering

Hi all,
I premise that I'm an Android fan but.... how it is possible that even on high-end devices, such as my new Nexus 4, stuttering is often there?
I had a Nexus S before, and I knew that with such hardware I could not pretend anymore...
But now, with a QuadCore 1.5Ghz and 2GB Ram... I can say that:
1) Launcher operations, opening/closing apps, multi-tasking operations are really smooth;
2) Web browsing is really smooth...
BUT
3) Gallery often stutters in the grid view
4) Facebook stutters a lot when scrolling
5) Whatsapp stutters when images are in the conversation..
6) Camera sometimes stutters when taking a 1080p video
7) As I already said in another thread, some games (for example, Scopa of Whatwapp ent. which should be a really LIGHT game) stutters a lot (the strange thing is that on some low-end devices it is smooth)
I ran Antutu to verify if there was something wrong.. and I obtained 17,300 points with everything stock and about 20,000 with CM 10.1, which seems great results. I also tried with Franco Kernel..but I cannot notice any improvement.
Do other Nexus 4 owners (or of other high-end devices) have these issues?
Any solution that it is not to wait for Google to rewrite from stratch the way UI is managed?
Thank you
Facebook is a horribly written app and stutters on all Android phones.
Other than FB and the tapatalk app (and perhaps the gallery, as you've said, but that has to be really minor) my phone nerver stutters.
It's in the software. We all have to get used to it. It will never be like iOS and to which is why you chose to buy a Nexus 4.
Mine N4 has recently started stuttering too, :/ I don't really know why and was also quite confused because I know my phone is a higher end device.

I have to say that the Stock ROM appeared to me much more smooth than CM10.1..
However, I flashed it to have some features I use (different vibration pattern for SMS, customizable tiles, customizable auto brightness, etc.)
Imo 90 % of all glitches/stutters/lags etc are caused by user apps running in the background eating memory and cpu power and not by the OS. Just my 2 cents I have over 200 apps installed and do not xperience any stutters in gallery or in any other app,
