Laggy xoom - Xoom General

Anyone elses XOOM super Laggy...any ways for the fix
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App

Yep, I think theres lag in every Android tablet I've played with. Googles min specs just aren't high enough for Honeycomb... Hopefully a bit more RAM and Quad Cores will fix it...

You know how you can install crappy software that runs at boot which will make even a core i7 with a good GPU and lots of RAM start lagging?
Yeah. Like that. Don't install lots of crap and expect the OS to handle it.

I've seen logs from users with 40+ boot services while trying to diagnose field issues with my apps.
The scary thing is I think it's more common than people who are careful about watching app behavior/installing minimal apps.
To make it worse, there's a lot of crappy software for Android. It's easy to cruft up your device.
Sometimes I almost wish for Apple's walled garden and non-multitasking app switching...

Custom rom for me such as team tiamat's latest takes away much of the lag. I also run adw ex launcher which pretty much takes away all the lag.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App

Hi all,
Well from day one i installed ADW EX as my launcher and only ever install apps i actually need and use as opposed to installing as many as i can because i can. So far i have yet to see any of the issues some users report and have never seen any lag, crashes or freezes maybe I've just been lucky but my Xoom has done all i wanted and more without issue so far.
Marc

I have over 100 apps on my xoom, stock 3.2 and it lags after being up for 6+ days. I think some devices need to be reset. I still had horrible keyboard lag on 3.1 after that update so I did a reset and it went away. Since the 3.2 all lag in the app drawer, home screens in different orientations, and opening of apps and menus is gone for me.

I have almost 300 apps, use ADWEX and Hammerhead Rom--everything zips right along. It's true that it begins to lag just a bit when I go a long time w/o rebooting.

Yessir hammerhead rom + adw launcher is a match made in heaven. My Xoom seems to fly with this combo

im experiencing some serious lag. Not many apps installed but plenty of lag time.

Will suggest to try custom rom. It's easy. Before that may be some maintenance could help. Wipe cash and stuff. Meanwhile was thinking to try v6 supercharged script to illuminate lagging. Is there anyone have tried?

I m in stock but i nvr experience any lag .. except long boot time

its annoying. ive also experience this on my xoom wifi and i dont even have alot of apps installed. i have to reboot the tablet atleast once a day so it doesnt lag badly.

I noticed it too. It appears to have apps just sitting in a tray. If you open it, it never really gets dumped. Multitask just isn't killing these apps when idled for hours. If I am not switching between apps after an hour why keep it up?

Just like any other pc, just close 'em. I use Active Apps widget-just check it when my ram is getting low and close whatever is still active. No need to kill apps that aren't active, though.

And how exactly is it laggy? I get almost no lag, ever, on mine. And I've had the pleasure of owning quite a few tablets: XOOM, Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad, TouchPad, Viewsonic Gtab, and Nook Color. Out of all of them, the XOOM and Tab 10.1 were arguably the most responsive.
Prior to 3.2, GPU performance was horrible when the screen was in upside-down landscape. This resulted in horrible home screen lag. Thankfully, this has now been fixed. Portrait mode is still slow. But at 0 degrees landscape, it's fantastic.

Read up on the Android Process Lifecycle before complaining about it. App handling done in a very intelligent manner, optimizing speed and responsiveness. We have tons of memory on the device, so why not leave apps as background cached processes? Plus, as part of the process lifecycle, there's a very limited amount of resources that can be devoted to background processes that do not display an ongoing notification. It's on the order of ~5% CPU utilization.

Did my Xoom just get faster?!

I picked up the Xoom on launch day and I've been pretty content with it so far, but I won't hide the fact that the device has a lot of random laggy moments, stutters, and glitches. Opening the app drawer looked like it was at 10fps, scrolling through the home screens would lag quite often, etc.
I don't know what happened, but after I just went into the android market to update my applications I swear my Xoom got a speed increase. Going through homescreens is super snappy now, it was never this smooth before. The app drawer looks great when you open/close it now, and everything just seems so snappy now. I was getting a little annoyed by all the home screen lag and random stutters, especially with a dual core processor that just shouldn't happen. I know other users have reported lag as well, has anyone else recently noticed a speed increase?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Since its that then im willing to bet that you had an app that was (before update) making your xoom seem slower than it should. Now that the app was updated, Xoom runs smoother. Thats my guess.

One application can hijack your Xoom and hose it up. All it takes is one....
I also noticed the lag, and mine is gone now too. When I added my google account, all the apps from my phone were loaded onto my Xoom, plus it was downloading all of my picasa web pics. It was cool, but way too much going on and it installed way too many apps that were probably not cool with honeycomb.
I removed all of the apps and rebooted, and things run perfectly now.
I agree with horsexd. I haven't really felt much lag...well besides in the accelerometer which I think was intended.
I noticed a drop in lag after restarting after initial boot.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Same after restart my xoom is lightening speed.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I have found that once I got more comfortable with the xoom, I was going straight to what I needed. Not clicking too many things and going back because I meant to open something else.
I have the same experience on my phone.
Hmm. I've been in the market for the past 30 minutes and nothing has changed for me.
Rebooting my XOOM.
The honeycomb boot screen seems to be a bit faster.
[edit] I call shenanigans. The app screen is still choppy when I hit the apps drawer button.
Seems the same to me. Aside from pulling up the app drawer, it's been pretty snappy since I got it.
whenever mine gets turned on, the little honeycomb looking animation is usually choppy. I think once it ran smooth, but it was uber choppy on this first turn on.
I haven`t restarted my xoom but once since I got it and its blazing fast all the time.

Is there a fix for laggy/choppy scrolling w the Xoom? Perhaps a FPS increase?

I bought one. I love it. Do not want Ipad, I want to stay with Android and will.
However - the scrolling is not smooth, there is no denying that. Is there a way to fix this?
I remember when I first got my Evo I had to root and put in a kernel that increased FPS. Is there an option for that yet?
Thanks.
My scrolling is smooth - i am overclocked, have been since the first 5 minutes of taking it out of the box.
I thought that I read we didn't have a cap on the FPS.
Use a new launcher like launcher pro
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Ok. I'll try the LauncherPro when I get home. Thanks for the suggestion.
Did you get some choppiness before you switched launchers? Or before you OCed?
The stock launcher is very laggy... if you use launcher pro you can set how fast the menus open. Get spare parts out of the market and you can configure how fast either things open too

The stock launcher is perfect. Really no need for a new launcher. I did experience some lagging but have to say that once I overclocked my XOOM it runs smooth as butter.

This is going to sound really stupid, but make sure it's right side up, in landscape orientation.
All other orientations are far less smooth (on the homescreen at least). Even 180 degree landscape is horrible. Only the standard orientation, with the Motorola logo in the top left, works well.

Mine lags abit, so i take it I will have to root the xoom ? for increasing cpu?
Yes, you will need to root the Xoom. You can get the one-click root over on the Development side of this forum.
That is just retarded... in order to have my xoom running smooth and how it should, I have to root. Does that make sense to anyone.
This is not exceptable... FAIL
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
The only time I found it not running smooth(before I rooted) is if i dragged my finger across the screen to scroll. If i just tapped the side, it was crisp.
Xoom or Doom!!!!
i guess it is all comes down to personal preference. cuz my Xoom is pretty smooth and i am running stock. i don't think anyone has a Super Xoom or a Doom Xoom. it is the same hardware, just that some people see fast different. get a thunderbolt if you wanna be super fast. or take the risk and overclok (something i'll never do), cuz there is obviously a risk factor to it. low battery for one, i won't be trading battery power for speed anytime soon. and then you xoom might not have a long life. it might be fast now, but we all watch nascar and see what happens when you go too fast, you CRASH!!!!. and within a year you could end you with a Doom Xoom. (dead Xoom).
cuz if this thing was safe to be overclock, i have said in other thread, uncle Moto would have been the one to do it, and would have brag and claim that they have the fastest tablet on the market @ 1.5Ghz. we all know it can be push even further. but with the cons, i won;t take my chances. i don;t need the nano second it will take to load an app, am fine with the extra second it will take me to load a web page. and scrolling is normal as it has been since i got mine. plus others have tried launcher pro and experience better. but do what you feel, just don;t come back crying foul about how you tablet didn;t last, and try to blame motorola for your fault.
How high are y'all overclocking? Hows the battery life?

Micro lag?! Jesus wept...
What do you mean by lag? The delay between your input and the action occurring or the smoothness of the UI? Android has never been as "responsive" as iOS or WP7 in terms of pinch-zooming and flicking up and down lists but it's usually faster at opening/switching applications. The animations can be smooth with Android, but if you try pinch-zooming on the iPhone or a WP7 phone you'll notice that it directly tracks your fingers and zooms instantly and smoothly, while Android will have an ever so slight delay between your finger movements and the zoom actually happening.
I don't have this phone (yet) but it looks to be the "smoothest" and "fastest" android phone out there, but it's still not as good at finger tracking as iOS or WP7. I get the feeling this is due to the UI not being GPU accelerated because of different hardware between phones, whereas iOS and WP7s are standardized.
I can safely say this phone has no lag/latency/delay between input and response even with 5 screens full of widgets and bucket-loads of background apps.
Micro lag??? What's next nano lag???
i'll also say what others have said. its freaking smooth. even SPB shell runs smoothly with multiple app running in the background.and it initially loads in less then 4 sec.

I bought this a few months back don't get me wrong its a excelebt device. But im finding it slow and anoying to the poiny i want to get rid of it, im fed up with how apps can run on there own without permission and slow the hell out of the tab and kill battery i fibd it silly how the default launcher widgets dobt fit the screen. Run the ROM/Kernel from Overcome and you will have your speed back.

Or we could send around 4 big blokes with various tablet devices to show you the error of your ways....
Overcome is good, but I prefer CyanogenMod, completely sans TouchWiz. Both are great, and you should definitely switch to one of them. You will gain a lot of performance and battery life back, for sure.
Might be a rogue app. I run the 'Fast Reboot' to dump stuff before and after a game, seems to help. The 2.3.3 update made things far smoother too.

I'm running the old gingerbread prep rom that came packaged with the overcome rom. I had such great speed from this that I didn't even bother to move onto overcome.
Apart from the occasional stutter, everything is very smooth, particularly web browsing. This prep rom is just stock ginger with root, and it's almost perfect. All of the ginger builds are largely identical so I can't see how you could have ginger and bad lag unless you have an app bogging it down.
Have you tried a factory reset and started fresh?
Use Fast Reboot
its free on the market, it made my tab run whole lot faster than it was.
ofcourse after installing Kratos and overclocking to 1.3Ghz it runs a lot better, but i still use Fast Reboot. it simulates a restart without doing one, causing all processes to close and come back up.
very nice app.
you can buy the paid one for scheduling it to run at times when memory usage is too high

GS3 vs N4 multitasking

A quick question for you lucky people who have got your N4s:
What's the multitasking like? I'm hoping it must be flawless with 2gigs of RAM?
Can someone who has GTA3 tell me if you can pick up exactly where you left off, if you've gone out of the game to do other things for a while? On my current phone GS3, it has the annoying habit of kicking me back to the beginning of the last mission I started if I leave the game for any reason. Is this a RAM limitation on my phone, or does GTA3 do this on all phones?
EDIT: I should mention I'm using the international GS3 i9300, that only has 1GB RAM.

My biggest problem with my older phones was that they would constantly close out the apps that I needed to stay open like contacts, messaging, phone. It annoyed me that my old clam shell phones would instantly open contacts and my G2 couldn't open then faster than 4 seconds or so. This thing leaves all those open and they all open instantaneously.

To be honest with you, multitasking has completely amazed me on the N4. On the Gnex, apps would close right away. With the N4, I go back to the browser at the end of the day, and the page I loaded hours earlier is still in memory In fact, I have yet to see my phone go below 950mb RAM remaining. I really think 2gb was overkill (1.5 would've easily done the job), but hey, I'm not complaining Also, keep in mind that I don't use any widgets at all, and I have very few things running in the background aside from Skype, so others may have a different experience.
Edit: As for GTA, it might be the game doing this. For example, Livingsocial is really annoying like that too. It doesn't matter if you just hit home and come back right away, it'll start from beginning. Yet, World of Goo, a much more demanding app, will come back exactly as I left it even when I leave to browse the internet for a while. Some developers really need to get with the program. I personally don't have GTA, so I couldn't tell you specifically.
Perfect. No other word to describe it. So much so I've noticed the phone stuttering a bit when scrolling (like a TINY bit, much less than any other android phone normally) and out of instinct opened the task killer to find 30+ applications all RUNNING. Including GTA3,

OK, I know its good, but 30 RUNNING? You do realize some stay in the launcher but aren't running, right? So you clicked them and they all didn't need to reload? I find that hard to believe.
