Every browser I use lags... Like badly... Like really really badly - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Like unusable badly.
I chrome, opera, boat, etc. They have started to lag. When I open the app, it takes forever to load and it it literally freezes because it doesn't respond to my touches. This past for about 10 to 15 seconds. This happens every time I go to a new website as well. Sometimes, even the whole entire tablet freezes, not just the browser app. I can't even go home, back or multitask. Then, the stupid dialog box saying "app is not responding do you wait to close, report, wait?" this lasts for 10 seconds or so
Then it finally unfreezes but then freezes again when I type in a new url.
Only really happens in browser and Tapatalk too, but only during startup for Tapatalk.
Should I factory reset? I don't want to lose my game save data though I'm stock btw.
This is where having a micro sd would be helpful. Stupid idiot OEMs omitting sd cards #smh

Try clearing your cache? I installed Cache Clear by JRummy and was amazed at over 1GB of cache data 800mb of which went to chrome... It ran much smoother after clearing it.

Ya I cleared cache on chrome and magazines. Still problem.

I find Chrome to be VERY laggy when I open it, takes ages to re-load the previous open tabs (even if it's only 1 or 2) and ages before I can open a new one and type a url etc, I am finding the Firefox beta to be much MUCH better, plus it supports Flash so I am now pretty much using it as my default browser.

Maybe you should try custom rom

try downloading androbench and then test your device. Browser lag is sometimes related to storage read speeds.

Use Xscope browser. Nuff said.

I tried that. It was bad. Would a factory reset help that?

Just tried xscope. Not a bad browser. It did freeze on me though
But it's pretty quick.

Xscope is very fast. In my experience it's the fastest. It's lightweight and has tons of features. I really suggest reading the help section to understand what options it has. Honestly I am amazed that xscope is not as popular as it should be. Everybody talks about dolphin/chrome but they don't come close to how easy and fast xscope is. I think that anybody who doesn't like xscope hasn't messed around with it enough to understand it. It literally feels way closer to chrome browser on the pc than chrome for android does. Use it for a few days and learn all it's features and I promise you will at least think a lot differently about it. There are quick gestures for switching tabs and you can even swipe across the screen to go back to your previous link (instead of pressing back button). That option is super handy! There are quick toggles for inverting the whites and blacks, desktop modes, full screen, lock orientation, etc. Trust me, just play with the option and you will love it I think.

I just reset my tablet since the browsers were lagging badly and freezing.
Everything seems to run s,other now, although I haven't installed my games yet lol

Look at your Google sync services. Possible some rogue app is problematic. I had stock browser sync issues at one point and just disabled sync for that service. Also, I think that Dolphin is the smoothest
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

I remember reading something about Google currents causing lag in jelly bean.
People said they fixed it by opening the currents app and disabling background sync.

Firefox Mobile?

Has anyone been able to successfully use this browser?
If I use it, and allow the screen to lock, it becomes impossible to unlock the phone and I have to pull out the battery in order to get back into Android.
The entire phone also starts choking up making each click or tap take about 30 seconds or more to execute.
Wonder if this is a common problem or just mine...
I have the same problem.
so, I use xscope

I use Dolphin HD. It looks like firefox..also supports add-ons and gestures. I also recommend you 'browse faster for Dolphin'. Increasing browsing speed alot.

It was a nightmare when I tried Firefox, really I won't recommend it
When I saw it got released, I went all happymode and went to download it.. the dissapointment when I realised how laggy it is compared to pretty much any other browser out there :\
Opera mobile is really the smoothest browser out there, wish they ported Chrome over to Android.
S'what I thought. Thanks, fellow arcanites
At the moment I'm just using the stock browser, since it seems to be one of the fastest ones, but I lament the fact that switching tabs is kind of a chore.
I'll look through all the other browsers out there again at some point
Tried firefox for android moment ago, not realy like it, loading time is horrible and sometimes cannot load at all, said my connection not available. Now I'm using stock browser and operamini.

Laggy browsers

I'm on stock jvs and the browser I'd really laggy when scrolling on some websites. it takes ages to respond. How do I fix it? I've tried stock browser and dolphin

Have you tried wiping the cache and history... I've found formatting the internal sd after a while helps, obviously you will loose everything on it, but just back up what you need..
If that dont work try some of the tweaks in the stickes
What ROM are you using?
I really enjoy the layout of Opera Mobile, and I find it to have absolutely no lag whatsoever; even while pages are loading, I can freely scroll around as I please. Granted, I'm using CM7 and have a highly tweaked phone. In general, my phone doesn't really lag at all.

What websites?
The truth is that every browser lags once a while, we cant help it. Dolphin hd is the best browser without a doubt but it also lags a bit sometimes.

Browser is laggy when your page is loading, try to wait when it is loaded at full, also when browser loading it is killing apps in background deppending on your page size. Also it is normal that browser laggs with "heavy" pages, there you can do nothing, it will lagg with every browser in this situation.

Pretty much true.
The only exception, and I've seen this on other sites, are the pages that have large rotating images (JavaScript, not Flash) that fade in and out.
Those pages sometimes experience slowdowns... other than that, both sites are completely smooth for me. (Odexed JVR)

Perhaps your rom is deodexed. Most deodexed browsers lag. Try using dolphinn browser or opera mobile. Opera isn't as good as dolphin, but it allows you to download from sites like filesonic.
mate i've been over different roms, and different kernels, overclocking etc. There's just some pages where it has always lagged for me. Most seem to be ok, but some are just impossible.. Usually use stock browser, have tried others but for some sites dont think it really matters, it's going to lag either way.
There's an australian footy site over here which has a bit of flash content etc and it takes ages to load even on wifi and can lag bigtime at times. Would be extremely impressed (and jealous) if anyone doesn't have lag on their phones on it.
www.afl.com.au
Yeah some pages the phone with stock browser (or dolphin hd) just can't handle smoothly. Too much going on, need more power like in the SGS2 to really handle it (opera might be better than stock or dolphin hd but I didn't like the interface when I tried it). IIRC the SGS2 has enough juice to play embedded 720p flash video, where 320p is a stretch for the SGS.

Definitely a lot going on at that page. It probably took a solid 10 seconds to fully load it on Wifi, haha. Surprisingly, there were a couple hiccups while it was loading on my phone—but only three very minor hesitations in scrolling in the entire 10 seconds of load time.
Sounds like you guys just need to tweak your phones a little.
With my SGS I get lag in the stock browser, where my Atrix is fine (which I'm guessing has to do with the extra ram).
For any sites on my SGS that lag, (which does include XDA at times) I try to go Opera Mobile whenever possible and that usually is enough for me...
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
The browser lags on aforementioned websites. I also experience lag on phonearena.com, pocketnow.com and rebtel.com. This might be related to the ram problem.
The sites don't lag on my zte blade which has 512 MB too. But maybe that has more free ram.
Wonder if galaxy S plus suffers from the same problem. Anyone have experience with SGS Plus or have heard anything about this?

yeh it's a heavy site, thought there would of been some problems. but seems yours performed still a bit better than mine. hopefully will get it worked out sometime.
Nothing wrong with your phones dudes, more that enough firepower to browse smoothly.
Just poorly optimized coding imo. To prove this you need to try Opera Mobile.
Same phone, same websites, different browser, NO LAG WHATSOEVER.
- no lag scrolling even while loading
- no lag zooming even while loading
- no lag whatsoever anywhere including that site www.afl.com.au (it just takes a while to load cos its huge, but no lag still)
- flash works great (this MAY lag a bit but that's flash for you on this phone, not opera's fault)
Doesn't matter what android version/kernel you're running either. I tried almost every rom/kernel combo out there (2.2.x, 2.3.x, custom, stock, semaphore, darky, talon, etc), makes no difference for this, really.
That said, other developers need to work better on their software. Opera has just proven it's perfectly possible to browse lag-free and it's not the hardware that's lacking. Although, to be fair, i'm not sure what more could i ask from a browser that opera doesn't provide already.
Interesting one of the sites that lagged really bad in dolphin hd, canadacomputers.com, was much smoother in the stock browser. Odd I though they were pretty the same, although I do notice that stock browser does the white/grey checkerboard thing (also the thing where zooming in blurs until it 're-renders') while dolphin does not. I hate how 'tabs' work in the stock browser though, maybe I'll give opera another shot.

Play Store laggy?

It seems very slow once you tap an app to see its details, or hit back to get out of it. Many times you can even see the transition animation pause in the middle. Scrolling and browsing is fine. I come from using an Atrix running CM10, and while the N4 is way faster in everything else, the play store shows no improvement whatsoever. Is it just me or shouldn't Google do a better job optimizing this app, given how frequently it is used.
Same experience here.

Should Chrome stay in CROMI or just be a play store app?

Vote now!
I hate Chrome on mobile. It is next to useless and with it being available on the play store I no longer want to offer it at all in CROMI going forward.
Give me a good reason to keep supporting it otherwise it goes!

Let's say it wasn't installed by the ROM by default - you'd still be able to install it from the google play store or from a titanium backup though right? What does it offer over the stock browser which is significantly faster than chrome on all web pages I have seen, offers full screen options, java, flash and bookmark synching with PC chrome. I really can't see why anyone prefers mobile chrome.
Stock browser hangs a lot when you're stock and unrooted. I've just got used to chrome now i guess

Mobile Chrome sucks a lot. Stock is way better when you're rooted.
I thinks there's no need to put it in your rom.
If people want to use it, they'll know how to download it. It'll cut down on ROM size anyway.

How do you do that?
Off with Chromes head !!!
I mean well yeh the stock browser works great as long as your not on the stock rom.
(I'm on 4.2 and atm don't use your ROM), BUT why do you want to remove Chrome? It's just one apk of your ROM and doesn't slow down the tablet, ppl who don't want it should just not use it (put in Aroma Installer so that they just don't have it if they don't want it )
But I prefer Chrome over Stock, as Stock also with all this tweaks etc. just didn't have such a nice user surface and also felt smoother (had bit longer to load)

Chrome is now 20mb and is available on the market. That is the main reason for wanting to remove it. However I have been using it exclusively for the last few days and am quite enjoying it. It is nowhere as smooth as stock (can't agree with you there) but where it does well is on sites with java script. The one failing of the stock browser is it is seriously buggy with js.
I did lots of testing on this a few days ago, all tests were done in the same part in my house so it was fair, and the test was loading xda forum with all topics, boat, stock, angel and firefox all failed after 90 seconds they were still loading and i got bored of waiting lol, dolphin (the latest with flash took on average 45 seconds but chrome killed it by loading the forum in around 25 seconds, i did t his test lots of times and as controlled as possible, i shut all other apps and the free ram was always close to 450mb so i suggest chrome for most things but if you need flash then dolphin is the browser for you, or do it like me and have both and use the best for the task

Chrome Dev. Regular Chrome crashes webpages way too often on Android N.
Forever on Chrome as well.
Opera is the best BY FAR! Like not even any close seconds.
It's pretty quick, smooth (mostly)....but the main thing..REFLOWS TEXT!!!
Google got rid of reflow text so you would be forced to see their ads. Chrome sucks because who wants to keep scrolling constantly to read!
Makes a huge difference.
Also can set to use Desktop sites. Highly recommended.
