[Q] Nexus 4 (or Android?) stuttering - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I premise that I'm an Android fan but.... how it is possible that even on high-end devices, such as my new Nexus 4, stuttering is often there?
I had a Nexus S before, and I knew that with such hardware I could not pretend anymore...
But now, with a QuadCore 1.5Ghz and 2GB Ram... I can say that:
1) Launcher operations, opening/closing apps, multi-tasking operations are really smooth;
2) Web browsing is really smooth...
BUT
3) Gallery often stutters in the grid view
4) Facebook stutters a lot when scrolling
5) Whatsapp stutters when images are in the conversation..
6) Camera sometimes stutters when taking a 1080p video
7) As I already said in another thread, some games (for example, Scopa of Whatwapp ent. which should be a really LIGHT game) stutters a lot (the strange thing is that on some low-end devices it is smooth)
I ran Antutu to verify if there was something wrong.. and I obtained 17,300 points with everything stock and about 20,000 with CM 10.1, which seems great results. I also tried with Franco Kernel..but I cannot notice any improvement.
Do other Nexus 4 owners (or of other high-end devices) have these issues?
Any solution that it is not to wait for Google to rewrite from stratch the way UI is managed?
Thank you

Facebook is a horribly written app and stutters on all Android phones.
Other than FB and the tapatalk app (and perhaps the gallery, as you've said, but that has to be really minor) my phone nerver stutters.

It's in the software. We all have to get used to it. It will never be like iOS and to which is why you chose to buy a Nexus 4.

Mine N4 has recently started stuttering too, :/ I don't really know why and was also quite confused because I know my phone is a higher end device.

I have to say that the Stock ROM appeared to me much more smooth than CM10.1..
However, I flashed it to have some features I use (different vibration pattern for SMS, customizable tiles, customizable auto brightness, etc.)

Imo 90 % of all glitches/stutters/lags etc are caused by user apps running in the background eating memory and cpu power and not by the OS. Just my 2 cents I have over 200 apps installed and do not xperience any stutters in gallery or in any other app,

I have just a few apps... I list them here... if you see something strange please let me know:
- Whatsapp
- Facebook
- Facebook messenger
- Temple Run, Scopa, Riptide GP
- COL Reminder
- Trovaprezzi
- My190
- Shazam
- Antutu
- Dropbox
- Franco Kernel Updater
- Nova Launcher
- GTasks
Nothing else... I think they are common apps and should not have particular problems..

Maybe it is because of the Nova launcher?

I see you have the same ROM and Kernel I have...
Have you changed something particular in the kernel settings?
I can see that there are tons of settings about the governor...

Smooth brower experience

I'm wondering if its possible to have a smooth browser experience on the tab 10.1, so far I've tried;
latest ICS preview
renice
disable opengl rendering (about:debug)
normal rendering (about:debug)
light touch - no idea what this does (about:debug)
force gpu rendering (developer options)
overclock cpu (1.4ghz)
force plugins to on-demand
touchscreen tune tweaks
clear app data/cache
other browsers (dolphin, firefox, opera)
On mainly text sites like forums.whirlpool.net.au scrolling is smooth but sites with moderate/standard use of images like theverge.com (full-site) scrolling is only average. I've noticed a pause in scrolling occurs when a new image comes into view and thats scrolling at a speed that you would if you were reading/skimming content on the site.
I'm comparing to the iPad 1, as its all I've got to compare to, where the above 2 sites scroll super smooth. Even the mainly text site is loads smoother on the iPad 1.
Is this as goods as the browsing experience gets on android?
I just flashed Romans ics rom and everything is smooth as butta... even on the stock browser.

Pretty much
Everything on Android is laggier then it would be on iOS, the actual release of ICS from Samsung may help with this, who knows though, overall though the ICS ports are pretty damn good when it comes to browser scrolling, its the best Ive seen on any Android device I have, IMO tegra 2 is a piece of turd, which is part of the problem
What I notice on some sites is if the images are large or large images sized down via HTML to thumbnails then I'm more likely to see jittering going on when scrolling on the site. Save both the home screen for Verge and Engadget and you'll notice a difference in the amount of image files larger than 50k each on Verge.
I don't think it's fair for folks to say that things are great for them when it comes to subjective things like responsiveness and smoothness. I'm on 3.2 and the Verge site stutters when scrolling and an image pops in. For the most part performance is acceptable for me but that's a subjective thing, I can perceive the stutter but it's not bad enough for me to complain about and I'd never even consider buying an iPad to remedy that.
For me memory management is worse than scrolling performance. Jumping in and out of memory intensive applications causes issues eventually as Android tries to dump background process to free up RAM. Hoping ICS helps as people say because that lag switching between or starting apps is more annoying to me.
Opera Mini processes the webpage on Opera servers so it speeds up page load times and I find browsing to be pretty smooth.
Can you elaborate on your definitions of smooth and lag? I compared browsing sites on the Tab and my mbp and unless my macbook pro browser experience is not as great as iOS Im not getting the same substandard performance. Im not seeing deformed images or text. Flash works well.

I agree on memory mgmt. I have to use the task mgr a lot in order to assure decent performance with hd video playback or even netflix.Even then im rebooting at least every other day. Really not seeing poor browser performance. Im running stock rooted currently. Considering a rom but so far I cant see not running into problems like no camera or other bugs which just adds up to swapping one problem for another.

You can set plugins to "on demand" to speed up page loads and only use it when you want to. I don't know why anyone would not have it "on demand". I get this laggyness the OP describes as well on mine without flash even installed. Nothing compared to my first gen ipad so I dont think it's fair to say that's the only reason.

I'm going to give it a go tomorrow. I'm tired of the crummy memory mgmt.
Try this ram manager instead of a task killer. Its very similar to the scripts like v6 supercharger that some devs bake into their rom. Is enhances androids own ram management.
Imo it helps from android killing my browser while I'm using it. Makes the tab generally more responsive and better on battery life by helping android do a better job of stopping rogue apps from eating up ramm in the background.

If you want smooth browsing experience(or a smooth OS in general) get an iPad. All Android tablets I've tried were laggy and had repeated browser crashes(I think there's an issue with JavaScript) and no custom rom will solve these issues.

Usually when i have an issue like that I have to uninstall and reinstall the app. You are correct about having only the balanced option with the free version. For me it does the trick though. Its just enough to have a better experience on all my Android devices.

Tried reinstalling and rebooting with waiting after reboot to reinstall and still it won't work on my Tab. I'm not even running a custom ROM. Weird. No data to clear either. There are a few other similar apps out there. I will see if one of them will work.

[Q] How could my Nexus 4 be laggy and choppy?

So, this is a very fast phone. And it's got craploads of RAM. And I've never had it in use where over a GB of RAM was in use. Yet, when I'm close to that 1GB utilized state, the phone starts getting bogged down, and downright choppy in the launcher! How could this be????
This even happens in the widget selector screen, where my hacked GS2 with JB never, ever was choppy.
Could it be a rogue app? I just expect at this point in time (with the speed + Project Butter) to be done with choppy/laggy performance issues.
What exactly are you doing when it happens? I haven't noticed any issues like this yet. Just been using normal apps though.

I'm really just tooling around, using the device. Nothing special. I do have Tasker running in the background, but that's no CPU hog. I have Google+, Facebook, Twitter, etc. all installed and syncing, along with Gmail. But again it's not like they're all syncing constantly... just normal setup stuff.
I consistently am seeing jittery animation in the widget selection area of the launcher... no jerkiness at all on the homescreens or app drawer. Also, apps all run super fast and smooth.

Try turning wifi on and off (or toggling data if using the cell network). I had a similar sounding issue and it seemed related to background network usage. Specifically with some of the Google apps and background syncing. In my case the phone would get warm as well, so I'm sure the CPU was busy as well. Cyanogen with gapps fixed the issue, but a simple data wipe might have worked as well.
Absolutely no issue here with over 60 apps installed.
Not even the slightest lag here...Still Fast and smotth after one month!
I vote tasker is the culprit.

I noticed a slight bit of choppiness when I was using Google music, sending text messages and surfing the web but it was only temporary and have not seen any such problems since that day. Trying a master wipe or another rom would probably be best.
Use better battery stats to see if an app is running in the background constantly. If not try doing a wipe and not installing any apps at first to see if the lag is still there.

Dialer and Settings menu lag while entering

Howdie
Does anyone know why Dilaer and Settings menus appear so slow on Jelly Bean ROMs from time to time? I am running 4.1.2 AOSP ROM, MDO by knzo (based on Rasbean Jelly) to be exact but I find this behaviour on every single JB ROM I tried. It is very annoying when you need to make quick call, dialer enters, but not single contact appears for about 2-3 seconds. Same for the settings menu, you get black frame and then you need to wait for few seconds that actual menu items appears. Where is the problem?
Thanks
I might add. Every time I click on a box to type, the keyboard allways takes it sweet time to pop up.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda app-developers app
I agree with you. And this problem is worst in 4.2.1.
Sent from my Nexus S
I started a thread on this quite a while ago and no one found any solution to this... But it seems like the lag is not that bad in jellshot... The menu and dialer are appearing without any lag with Beladus 7.3 kernel
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
From my experience, after you flash a ROM everything is super fast and smooth! Start restoring back and/or adding apps, then
that's the point of no return! The occasional reboot helps things a little bit. Also if the dialler and settings haven't been accessed
for a while, I find this lag but if they've already been used and you can see them in the list of Recent apps, then they open up
a little faster.
Flash a GB ROM like oxygen (links are in this general section) or cm7 and use holo launcher/a browser with hardware acceleration. Runs super fast. Dialer and keyboard and other lags are nonexhistant on newer phones ( my girl has a Verizon gs3 with the jb update). Its just a 2 year old phone with a very small amount of ram for today's standards. Not much you can do about it.
Its like running windows 8 on a computer from 2004 that was built for windows xp. Difference is cell phones evolve at an alarming rate compared to computers... And the prices suck.

I was considering Oxygen for a while but I really hate GB browser and complicated UI. What kernel is suitable for Oxygen? I am surely gonna try it when I get some time.
At the moment I am running completely stock odexed 4.1.2, and lag still exists. Its like app enters but it needs few moments for data loads into it. I dont run heavy apps in memory, only ****ty Facebook client and Whatsapp...

Tried Oxygen 2.3.2 with polobunny's launcher fix - partially fixed. Dialer is a lot, and I mean a lot faster, feels lighter to. But settings menu isn't, I think that the speed of opening is pretty much the same as JB, RAM management is killing it from time to time.
Second thing I don't like about GB is lack of butter. It really feels, for instance Facebook app is choppy from time to time, YouTube app is always lagging. Stock Browser, OTOH, isn't that bad as i remember on my other device (Huawei U8650) that i owned previously. Third thing, multitasking, I am not sure is it because of lack of this "bigmem" 60 MB more RAM or something, but multitasking for me is not as good as JB.
Opening some other apps aren't much faster than Jelly Bean. Camera is starting faster, Dialer as i previously mentioned is way more faster, Messaging and Play Store about the same speed, Google Maps and Gallery feels *slower* than JB. I am going to stick with it for couple of days more, but even now I think that there is no point in running GB ROM, custom JB ROM's are pretty darn good on NS.

I9305 owner, question about nexus 4

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting rid of my S3 LTE for a Nexus 4, as one thing that really irritates me about my s3 is that scrolling is not smooth with apps such as facebook, or any apps with listviews and images.
I've read that the nexus 4 is "buttery smooth", so I just wanted to ask, does the nexus 4 have this problem or not? I am amazed that my 1.4ghz processor can run hd games but cant scroll a listview smoothly, which leads me to think theres something wrong with the s3.
Any feedback on the nexus 4's smoothness is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Jack
Same thing with nexus 4 scrolling within apps is jittery not smooth. But I think its an app issue because on some apps like currents it scrolls smoothly but on apps like xda it is not.

hmm thats sad to hear it happens on the nexus 4 too.
I thought it was just bad coding, but even in the play store, when I scroll down the homepage and images are loaded there is lag here as well.
For me it's really noticeable and not smooth, I can't believe iOS can perfect this with half the hardware resources but android cant.

So when you scroll the Facebook app at a fairly slow speed, do you notice no ever so slight glitches? Like its dropping frames? I notice this a lot on my s3.
OK first thing you have to understand. Not all androids are the same. How the OS interacts with the hardware is very different from one device to another. With android being still in its baby stages you will find lag from time to time no matter what device you use. Apple can control all aspects of the hardware and software so they will always have an advantage. You have to remember even the OS is not designed to take advantage of anything more then a dual core. Android has a long way to go still.
Wayne Tech Nexus
Ive been playing around, and if Ive found that the nexus 4 sets the min cpu frequency to 1026mhz when the screen is touched, and it appears my s3 only sets it to 800mhz. If i set my min frequency to 1.4ghz my scrolling is super smooth. I guess it's an s3 problem.
S3 is optimized to run the day to day routine tasks under 800 mhz. I installed android tuner and it kept reporting so about s3. Wasn't the case with my n4. N4 showed 1xx ghz or1.5 ghz... Somewhere between.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I've changed my CPU governor from pegasusq to interactive which appears to be using more power when doing things, which is giving me much better performance including scrolling. I was on the verge of selling my s3 and getting an n4 before I found this! Its fairly smooth now though.

Fix Facebook LAG!!!

I've been installing so many Roms to try to remove the scroll lag from facebook, I've turned off scrolling cache, overclocked cpu/gpu the only way i managed to reduce the lag on facebook was to set my governor to 'performance'
So i've finally found a better solution, i've found the archive of facebook apps from the facebook developer site https://developers.facebook.com/docs/android/downloads
Or a direct download to V10 https://developers.facebook.com/resources/Facebook-10.zip
The archive goes back to version 10 and it goes further if you are able to build the app yourself through SDK. I've found V10 is MUCH smoother than the latest version, more than likely because it is a 'lite' version compared to the new version. It doesn't have the in built video player or web browser and probably some other features i'm not aware of yet as i've not used it much yet but thought i'd share in case anyone else is stressing about facebook lag
Please note I did find you need to disable 'Chat Heads' from the messenger app otherwise you will get a glitch. Also there is still some small lag issues but it is massively reduced.
Hit a thanks if you found this useful please
Group of good developers should get together and modify Facebook application. Not only that app needs lots of optimizations but it's design is not quite good. There are a lot of concepts of material designed Facebook app which looks amazing.
Never had never will

I've found that if you use per app profiles and set the governor to 'performance' and set the clock speed to around 1500mhz you get no scrolling lag. I use franco kernel now as i've found it to be fast and the cpu temps are a lot lower than my last kernel.
I use m.facebook.com and the CM Browser. I set CM for full-screen mode and pin the Facebook bookmark to the home screen. It's just like the Facebook app but without the lag or the battery drain. Pretty much perfect.

Yeah I tried that but couldn't find a browser I was happy with that had fullscreen. You should try V13 in the link its the last version that doesn't lag. V16 the next release after V13 has big lag issues. I prefer using the app because of notifications ect..
