Google Wallet experience - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious to know what sort of experiences people with NFC and Google Wallet have had, before I order a Nexus 4. If you have/had a Google Wallet phone, where did you pay for things over NFC, and how common did you do it? How fast was paying for it?

I put it on my AT&T Galaxy S3, depending on where you are from, I used it to buy things at Meijer and McDonald's.
Other than that, not many people support it really, though a newer Walgreens in my area also supports it.
Overall though it's awesome - put your pin in, hold up your phone, done.
Seriously is awesome and I truly wish more places had it.
I only ever used it once in a while, though that was due to switching ROMs and it's a pain to get it set up again and working on a new ROM.

For some reason, my experience with my GNex has been hit or miss. Sometimes it works when I place it on the reader, sometimes it doesn't and I look like a damn idiot. I've only been able to use it at McDonalds, but it has done it at more than one location.

That sounds pretty sweet. I wish gas stations would support it - that would be the best. How is it hard to set up?

Very easy to set up. But I don't see (now) the advantage over using my credit card. I used that 10 that comes with GNex, and then never used it again. It's a fun thing to show off to your iPhone friends, but not really practical since most stores don't support it. I just tried it in Meijer and that's it.
(If Trader Joe's support, would be another story).

I use it every time I can. The places I have used it at are mcd, Walgreen, rite aid, Albertsons used to have one, best buy, but the one here doesn't work for some reason. The problem is I hardly ever go to these places, so I never get to use it. I really wish everywhere did take it. Then I wouldn't need a real wallet. Just my id and phone.

no prob with the wallet yet

there are also rumors (due to a leaked app version) about a google wallet card, which you can activate with your phone for one transcation like a regular credit card.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/01/introducing-the-physical-google-wallet-card-coming-soon-to-google-wallet-and-more-new-features/

I buy so much from online retailers these days reliance is waning. It might be nice for the grocery store I walk past on my way home but I usually end up using my debit card to get cash back to avoid an ATM stop.
That said I've used it at Duane Reade and a few other places with no problems.

Dad's can be replaced... Nexus Ones unfortunately cannot
What conditions is it in? Go on to Ebay and Craigs List and get some ideas.
When I was searching I see anywhere from $300 to $400 for "Good" and up to about $450 to $500 for "mint".
Keep in mind what one person think "mint" might not be another person's "mint"

You got that right
Just use the Nexus on EDGE- there is nothing on AT&T that compares. Unless you can put up with the disgrace to mobile phones that the iPhone 4 is.
Nah, my wife has their galaxy phone, captivate I think? It isnt horrid out of the box and with a little work it performs pretty well. I'll leave the materials out of it, they dont compare but since I put my phones in a case right off the bat I could care less as I never see them. Primary function that I would miss would be the trackball, forgot how much fun it was to try and edit text by attempting (over and over) to hit the sweet spot. Easier to just delete back to the mistake and start over from there. Still life could be a lot worse than to be stuck with that phone. Also over there is the x10 which has more downsides than the sammy piece but might be worth a look for the right person. These and the iphone are about the only handsets worth talking about for the moment.

I've never once used the N1 trackball to edit text. With practice you'll get REALLY good at hitting that sweet spot the first try. I only use the trackball for waking the device and color notifications. I had too many Blackberry trackballs get ruined by too much use to ever use my N1 trackball that way.
I admit I would miss the trackball, but in my case for the color notifications. I love coming back to my desk and knowing what is waiting just by looking at the trackball.
lol, yeah, maybe a young whipper snapper or crackberry user might find it easy but being old and pathetic I find it near impossible. I use the volume to wake as it appears to be the hard button with the least breakage reports. Considering that I seldom need to edit text and I use the trackball for nothing else I'm guessing mine might be around longer than yours.
I am gonna get flame for this but....
Iphone 4 is not half as bad you think. I have a n1 for my daily use. I dont think i will trade it in for a new device. However i was sick and tired of running my battery down by using it as my mp3 player so i picked up a ip4 to use as my music player. I was very surprised how smooth it runs. However the UI is plain and boring though. Maybe that was what apple was going for plain and boring. Android is very customizable. Make your own style.
Anways forgive me of this mumble jumble talk of ip4.
There is always a nexus one for att which i use. You can leave from n1 to att n1.

Sure, you're an android fanboy, we get it, but the iphone isn't 'that' bad.
Why do you have to switch if your dad switches that's my question.
As for the N1's ... I'd never sell them... too valuble atm. Go for high price
Yeah, you don't have to sell your Nexus Ones.
You use them on ATT with Edge, and in the mean time you keep searching craigslist and posting ads in other places wanting to trade your TMobile Nexus One for someone who has a ATT Nexus one.
Easy as pie. I've done that, my friend has done that. Sure N1's, especially ATT ones are hard to find, but just keep looking. It's a phone that has no equal, it's worth it.
You can also try to trade with someone with the AT&T version N1. Try searching for it on craigslist.
I just traded a captivate for a Att nexus one. They are rare and it took me a month or more to find one

Just find someone to trade Tmo version for AT&T version. I may be switching carriers with two of my lines. Not sure if Tmo is the carrier I'm choosing yet though. If a decision is made soon I will let you know.

If you can't find an AT&T-compatible N1, try finding an unlocked Telus HTC Desire. It's largely the same hardware, and if you don't want Sense you can flash Cyanogen or OpenDesire.
Maybe I'm just a glass half full kinda guy but at least with att your phone will work in buildings and between cities and they do have decent androids unlike when they just had the backflip or whatever it was called. The sgs is definitely stellar and I thought there was an att compatible nexus (not just the tmo one on E)

You've got that right, deleting and starting over is really frustrating but less so than tapping my screen for five minutes. I wonder what the testers did that worked so well that the SGS got past design and all the way to stores like that

[Q] ROOT?

I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

Whats the deal with the locked bootloader on some Moto devices? I hear the term but I'm not familiar with what it means (EVO owner). I assumed it had to do with not being able flash ROM's and/or root. Can anybody explain?

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.
The Atrix has already been rooted:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/19/motorola-atrix-4g-already-rooted-and-its-not-even-out-yet/
I wouldn't be shock if Motorola backs off the boot loader block. Pretty funny huh. I was talking to the guys in best buy mobile and they claimed it was verizon that was locking down the boot loaders. Of course these are the same guys who were shocked when I told them I had a OC nook color w/ froyo and honeycomb.

Shame on you for talking to BB employees about anything technical. No hate, but most of them are morons.
It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

This is what I'm banking on. But if it turns out being locked down. I will be sending an e-mail to Motorola and Google with a picture of my return receipt and an explanation.
I went to my local best buy today. I got there around noonish and I was the first and only person to pre order or even ask about the xoom.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

Thats all i have also. The confusion among the techs had me skeptical. Hopefully my skepticism doesnt hold to be true.
Also praying for no locked bootloader. Hoping to be rooted within the first few days
All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

Yep, ran into the same problem. The guy had no clue, the female was all over it. She knew exactly what I was asking for, went right to the pre-order sheet and got it done lickity split and she was hot to.

Very angry.

Today I went to the At&T store because my GPS worked as well as my Captivates: it didn't work.
My 3.5G Mobile Data would connect also.
They gave me a new phone and I tested it in the store and both problems still existed. Except now the phone is very glitchy and extremly laggy. (Just like the Captivate)
I tell them about this and they say there's nothing they can do, and to call 611.
I call and talk to some random guy who can't even understand what my problems are, so that didn't help.
Where do I go now? I figure I'll go and get another phone tomorrow. But what really makes me mad is that the display model was great, GPS was instant.
Oh and also I just did a factory data reset on my Captivate that I'm supposed to sell at 1:00 tomorrow. And it gets stuck at the Cognition book screen. Please help, this is almost more urgent that my stupid Atrix because I need to sell this phone.

Atrix 4G having GPS problem? Wow I'm surprised!
Mine is instant GPS lock and a lot faster than Captivate and even faster than my iPhone!
The only problem is the LCD screen color distortion
I guess you have checked the Use wireless networks under Location & Security Settings right?
For captivate, please have a clear sky.

Try another cooperate AT&T store to do the Atrix Exchange. So far i'm still debating if i should keep my Atrix or get iPad 2......
Fixed the Craptivate with Odin, it's ready to sell now.
What to do about Atrix? I'd rather have the first one I got because at least it wasn't all glitchty.
I got an Atrix on 2/22 and two weeks later it wouldn't boot or charge so I swapped it. GPS was instant and reliable on the first one. The replacement would never start Google Navigation and or maps although I never tested the GPS by itself, outside of an app. Downloading a new copy of Google Maps on the newer phone and it started working instantly. The display phone was also perfect: two sales guys had phones with no working GPS, and they d/l'ed the new Maps from Marketplace and it fixed their phones, too. Let me know if it fixes your phone or not.
Yeah on the first phone I had the last version of Maps, as of yesterday.
Another reason why I'm mad is because I spent this whole time setting up my phone... because I couldn't use titanium backup because I'm not rooted...

Maybe if you stop being angry, you might get some service. Customer service workers are people too and nothing is their faults. Don't treat them like **** and they'll actually do something to help you.
Aside from that, install launcher pro and turn your phone off and on a few times. It'll speed up. Mine was real laggy for a few hours till I swamped it with apps and whatnot.
As for TiBup, root your phone then use it, or use app brain like a normal person and skip all the h4X0r work. Of course install all your non-paid for non-free apps from SD...
I'm always friendly with the employees. They weren't too friendly with me so I'm going to a different store tomorrow.

Find one that has a service center attached to it. They have techs you can talk to, not just the pretty faces(not always pretty) they put out there to sell.
Pretty sure we don't have any of those in my area. Would I just do a Maps search for AT&T service?

Android Pay ?? or ...

I'm torn on this because my bank doesn't support android pay yet, I've added my google wallet card and and never used it yet. Now i'm on RR CM13 ROM and like changing my DPI messing around with Xposed... Am I the only one who who can live without Android Pay? Are the trade offs worth it?
I never use it, unless I'm bored and want to test it out. So few places actually work with it that I always have my wallet on me anyways.

I agree, I'm old school. Maybe when it becomes more widely available, ill start caring more.
And Apple pay is not widely used either. This pay system is supposed to be for convenience but its easier to pull out your card even though you have you phone in your hands most of the time.

Android Pay Issues

I have had reliable Android Pay experience with two phones in the past at several businesses that I visit frequently (HTC M8, and Nexus 5X), but my Nexus 6P is not doing so well.
When I try and use Android Pay, it often doesn't register at all, or acts buggy. The last time I tried using it, the Android Pay screen kept popping up rapidly as I held it on the terminal, as if it was registering over and over. At another business it took me a couple tries and moving the phone around quite a bit to get it to work, but it eventually did.
I also have tried this with two different 6P's because my first one had a screen defect, and they both had similar results.
Does anyone else have this issue? Have you have that Android Pay works better with the phone face up or face down? Or maybe if you line up the phone a certain way on the terminal?
I absolutely love this phone, but this is disappointing because my past Pay experiences have been so seamless.
I have used it several time with no issues. NFC is under the camera visor so touch that to the reader.
It seems something changed today that "fixed" Pay and even systemless does not work anymore. I'm beginning to think it's either stock and Pay or custom and no Pay. it just gets to be such a hassle.
