Mistakenly recieved WE tablet - Thinkpad Tablet General

I'm pretty sure im screwed here but I thought I would ask, I sent my tab in a few months back for the power button issue, it was repaired and flashed with OTA 2.5 at the factory so I was not able to root it, I shelved it out of anger and sadness and just picked it up again when I heard wind of the OTA 3.0 update I hadn't looked at the version before hand but, once the update was installed i saw that I was on WE software instead of US. its been running great, there's a few oddities here and there, for example all the prices on amazon are in Euro or GBP, which is easily Remedied.
I only have a couple of concerns, will being on the european firmware effect any google play apps I can install? I was surprised to see netflix install and work.
The GPS works...poorly I dont know if this is a bug carried over from honeycomb, or if its a western Europe issue, every time I open maps its centered over the UK and i only ever have GPS signal for a minute or two.
and can i flash a US version onto this thing? that's where i get the feeling I am screwed, Im not really in the mood to send it back to Lenovo for the 4th time but If i have to I will.
Worse comes to worse it was a nice Sneak Peak for me, my buddy has a TPT and he was foaming at the mouth at ICS

How will T-Mobile firmware updates roll out?

I'm getting kinda frustrated by the lack of information I'm finding on this. I got a T-Mobile Tab for Christmas; I noticed there's no Software Update option in Settings. After some digging, I find in the Samsung User's manual (for the T-Mobile variant) that updates will be through Kies Mini, and that Kies is available on samsungapps.com. That site tells me that Samsung Apps are not available in the US. So after more digging, I find the Kies Mini app, install it on my netbook and fire it up. After switching from ADW back to the TouchWiz launcher to get Kies to recognize my device, it still says that my Tab is not supported for firmware updates.
If there's something I'm missing, please let me know. I understand that there's probably no official updates available yet anyway, but this is something I need to sort out before my 30 return period is up. I do not want to get stuck with a device that is going to be this much of a hassle to update, not to mention CES is in a couple weeks, and I know there's going to be many more, much more well-featured tablets being launched.
Thanks in advance guys and gals.
As that are no known issues with the tab at this time you can expect no updates for quite some time. The first and possibly only update will come if the go with the gingerbread update, if samsung provides it. This is a good mindset to be in if you don't want to get dissapointed later. I have the tmo tab and have gone with jmc eufopean firmware. If I am stuck here forever I will still be satisfied.

Well, I'm used to being disappointed when it comes to updates... I own a Droid X I would expect, however, there to be maintenance updates. With there being several unofficial firmwares floating around out there, you can't ignore the fact that Samsung is at least working on a bug fix update. I'm not really wondering WHEN I'll be getting updates, so much as HOW I'll be getting updates. Just frustrates me to no end that I haven't yet even found a way for my device to check to see if there's an update available. I don't care that there isn't one, just want to know how to get it when there is.

Like your experience, I had to hunt for Kies and after installing it discovered it said I had an unsupported device. I checked with T-Mobile and was told not to use Kies at all, but that any updates will come over the air instead. No need to "check in" like I did before this device, but it will just appear as a system notice when it is time. He didn't say, and I didn't think to ask at the time, whether the updates will come from T-Mo, Google, or Samsung, but maybe that doesn't really matter, any that are due will just appear.

Kies vs. OTA

Can someone post (or re-post) a link to where T-mobile or Samsung says the update is only via Kies?
This assumes that millions of Vibrant owners a) are PC-savvy enough to update that way, b) run Windows in the first place (unless there is a linux version of Kies that I don't know about, please post link if you do)... while not *utterly* outside the realm of possibility, when you step back and look this is a pretty ridiculous thought that doesn't pass the smell test for me until I see some kind of proof.
Which leads me to the point that unless you have gotten a text or update notification on your phone from T-mobile with layman-friendly (pre-noob) instructions on how to use kies to update your phone from stock eclair to stock froyo, I don't believe that what is on Kies necessarily corresponds to what will be pushed OTA.
In fact I think it's quite possible if not likely that last second changes/fixes may have necessitated a final KA7 last night to hit the airwaves with "today".
Anyone have a screenshot of an OTA *NOTIFICATION* having been sent to them, and what form that takes and what instructions it gives? That's the proof I want to see.

For the Mini Kies notification
http://yfrog.com/f/gy2nwxlj/
As I wrote in a couple of other threads. You are right. This is just a voluntarily upgrade. And I think it was mainly to shut up to angry power users. As proof we have the KA7 leak that just came out today and the version Kies is updating is KA6. The mandatory OTA will be coming some time later but this seems to be a move to quiet down the press about the whole Froyo update issue. If this was the official update from T-mobile we would probably have the source code today as well, which is what we here on XDA really want.
Interesting. This is the first time that I've seen any kind of documentation showing that TMO won't be doing distributing as an FOTA update. Thanks for the heads up KA7. Still running JL5 while I've been waiting for things to settle down somewhat. Hopefully KA7 will be the last official release for the next month or so now.
any word on what version KA7 is? 2.2.1?

Agreed... and personally I'm waiting for Nero 6 (7?). But I'm going to be very interested in what T-mobile says *externally* today.
A promise of an update today from someone that high up at T-mobile... I'm sorry, when average josephine-housewife who bought a pretty Vibrant from the nice man at the T-mobile stand at Wal-Mart finds out that it *isn't* just a click-click-click on their phone like JI6 was... there's going to be a *lot* of very pissed off callers (and T-mobile phone support techs).
This effectively makes it an update that isn't really an update for everyone who has a Vibrant, not even everyone who has a Vibrant on T-mobile, and if that's the way it's left I'd be very surprised. I don't think that that is the message they want to send right now. "See, we updated today. Sorta..."
*This* update isn't mandatory, isn't FOTA. There could be an OTA 2 hours later discussed in their "Community". Not in the scope of the update being discussed in that screenshot.
It's entirely possible, now that I think about it, that KA6 is where features and so forth freeze, and that KA7 (and higher) are more focused on fixing anything that could break during OTA update, which could be (supportably) from JI6 *or* JFD.
We'll just have to see, but right now all we have proof of is that there is an update, and it is on Kies. I think that there *has* to be an honest to god OTA coming. To not do so almost guarantees that you will end up having a very high number of customers still on 2.1, perhaps over 50%, out of sheer laziness or lack of information/confidence to update. That support nightmare, again, just doesn't pass the smell test.
Also Kies Mini is refusing to update my phone, and I'm not sure how many people will haev a similar issue but it downloaded a bunch of **** and told me my phone could not be upgraded 5 times in a row.
How many battery pulls do I have to do before the damn thing actually updates?
Terrible experience, IMO, and a huge waste of time seeing as how some of us don't have the fastest internet connections out there...
That software also tends to choke spectacularly on Windows 7 (both 32 and 64-Bit) and AFAIK it does not run on Mac or Linux computers.
On the flip side, T-Mobile's coverage is bad so they put themselves into a corner when it comes to FOTA updates. I'm not driving 20 miles just do download a smartphone update because they only have GPRS and Weak Edge (1-2 Bars) around me...

petition to google to get attention from motorola (UK users)

we all know that motorola keep ignoring us on the EU side on the xoom.
forget the 3.1 update for the moment. we don't even have a stock rom to restore yet.
wondering will it be better if we get a petition going to google so that google can give motorola some pressure to give us more attention? maybe on the 3.1 updates?

If you set one up, I'll sign it.
This is my first Motorola for a very long time (said I wouldnt by from them again after discovering the build quailty of their phones years ago), I would not have brought it if I have known this would be the situation.
I may yet ditch it for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 when it comes out, unless this get sorted. Its very poor, I've had my Galaxy S2 for two weeks and its already have two firmware updates and has had a recovery rom from day 1.
sure, i would love to setup one up, but unless there is a big amount of ppl "liking" it, i don't think it will help.
i will set one up anyway and update the post later.

EJ03 brings TouchWiz, Android 3.2 for Verizon 4G Tab

Received an OTA notice last night and updated, but didn't actually use my Tab again until today. Imagine my surprise when everything looked a little bit "different"!
My Tab is typically part of the early soak tests, being a pre-release unit. Here are the build details:

Nice! Unfortunately, this doesn't help us wifi-only owners, does it...

That would be cool. I used you're work on the Vega and been waiting for something to show up for the tab.
Nice. I shipped my tab to Verizon on Monday (Nov. 7) to get replaced or fixed (newton ring issue). Hopefully I get one back with the updates.
What do you think of 3.2 with TouchWiz on the 4G tab? I'm using jflowers ROM which has been pretty good to me. I do prefer vanilla Android, even though TouchWiz on the tab seems nice.

Same ROM here. If this update goes live I may just have to restore back to stock to be able to get the update and check it out.
I would love this update. And why no love for this tab? I mean i seriously feel like im being punished for buying the verizon version. Damn near every other tablet including eveything else samsung makes has at least 3.2. And they've had it since August. Its almost december!!! Sorry for the vent

I agree with you about being punished...I love this tab, but it seems we're on the "pay no mind list"...
Same here, I'm amazed how few of us are on the forums. This model must not have sold very much. Simply amazes me because I can't even imagine myself with a wifi-only tablet anymore.
I held out on an iPad because of AT&T and by the time the iPad2 came out I had a rooted Nook Color running CM7 so I patiently waited for an LTE capable android tablet (having seen the light). When the Verizon GT 10.1 dropped I jumped and am so glad I did.
I'm still salty that the design is different. There's just a few cases available for our model all of which basically blow . . .
Now I'm counting the days before ICS but wonder if Samsung or the CM team will come up with something for the LTE tabs at the same time as the wifi versions. On the plus side Pershoot is spreading the love across the entire platform with his kernel updates so that's great, there's hope!
Has anyone else with a 4G LTE tab gotten this update? I have not... Still on 3.1.
Nope, nothing here

About XT1475 NOUGAT update

So i was on lenovo forums and found this (its for 1575 btw):
"Ok, so I've seen all the posts and comments. *I know Moto / Lenovo does not comment on Impending updates.
*
However.
*
When I called Moto Support Yesterday, I was told by two different reps that this phone's update schedule has changed, and it will no longer be recieving 7.0, or any further updates above 6.01, other than google supplied security updates.
*
Even funnier, when I asked how I was supposed to get my promised update, the rep told me to Unlock my bootloader and "Google for a nougat update, Just be carefull of hacked versions" (NOT Kidding)
*
When I asked for an ID or other information so I could track the seconnd call, I recieved reference number*170605-001691.
"
What u guys think?

Regular Motorola Lenovo support people have no idea and are not in the loop on updates. That is why if and when you are chosen for beta test you are told not to call them.
Since the main Nougat thread was needlessly closed, I haven't been able to keep track: has 7.0 rolled out for the XT1572 everywhere (i.e., across all of Europe) or are some major countries still waiting?
If it's rolled out everywhere else, there's absolutely no reason to think the XT1575 will ever receive Nougat. Why would there be a multi-week or multi-month gap for a device that's essentially identical? It probably has to do with CDMA issues and/or carriers demanding $$ for an approval process before they allow Nougat-ified 1575's on their network.

The main thread was closed from all of the arguing and was intended to keep track of the XT1575 update. Since nothing new was happening for months, it only made sense to lock it to save the admins from getting another headache from cleaning the thread again. It would be nice to have a good place to see where else the XT1572's have been getting updates though

And the main Nougat thread needed to be closed, it had to be cleaned by Mods several times a week because of constant arguing, bickering, whining, and needless Moto bashing that even got rather hostile at times. Leave to a few to ruin it for everyone.
One of Motorola forum administration said, that rep provided a wrong information, and they "recruite" him better. No official info about cancellation of update was provided, so I think we have a small hope.

Seriously? We will get the update... The last "beta" was just sent to testers only a few weeks ago (early August I believe) because they were still having issues with Nougat on the XT1575, and once it has been approved and found to be stable it is usually rolled within 30 days.
The mentioned "obsolete" and "we are not getting an update per customer service" is crap, and has been CLEARLY disproved on Moto's official forums... did a rep say that? Apparently they did, but they were flat out wrong... they did not have the knowledge or the authority to do so.
TBH, this update for the Pure has been a PR nightmare for Moto... they don't talk about it (which is not new, Moto has been tight lipped about software updates since before Google bought them) and it is taking a ridiculously long time to get a stable ROM, the beta testers have had significant issues with several builds, even hard brick issues early on when performing a factory reset.
Although I get people's frustration, how do you think people would feel if they they got an update, then did a factory reset for whatever reason, and the device bricked because of it?
I know it sucks... but seriously what is it going to do for you? Other than a few gimmicks that Nougat has that Marshmallow does not, the update does NOTHING for this device, no new camera API, no Vulcan support, no VoLTE, no Pixel Launcher, not even updated Moto apps. You get multi-window which honestly barely has a usable function, and clear all in recents, which is also not really important, and Google Allo added at the system level (yeah, OK, nobody uses it I know).
Patience, it will come when it's ready... I honestly don't care anymore if it comes or not because by the end of the year I will be moving on to something else since this one will be pushing 20 months for me and it is just time to move on.
I'm on an XT1572 Style, which I purchased online -- I'm guessing diverted from EU markets, since the update announcements were always in French. Nougat 7.0 has made this phone unbearable to use -- 1-3sec lags on most interface interactions, and up to 5 seconds when it feels like it. I've followed the advice from Moto support to fix it, including a hard factory reset. I agree with the post above that 7.0 adds very little value to the phone. I'm angry enough to look into a consumer law action against Motorola for the replacement value. And there is no way in hell I will be buying another Moto device -- looking hard at the OnePlus 3T.
Just received nougat 7.0 this morning for my moto x pure edition. Installed the software in 30 min. Noticed the app files are larger. Everything runs smoothly so far. The phone is a XT1575 32GB. It was a very long wait. Located in Coeur D Alene, ID. Jerry Purchased from Best Buy, unlocked, Retail
