Misaligned slider cracks bezel - Epic 4G General

I noticed small stress fractures on the size bezel near the power button a while back. They kept getting worse and worse. Finally, it turned into a crack, and the cracked piece would jut out every time I closed the phone. That piece eventually broke off.
Then I noticed a had a similar crack forming on the bottom right side. Well, a little deduction, and both cracks at perfectly aligned with the slider tracks you can see on the back of the phone.
This is a refurb phone I got. Since day one, I noticed the top and bottom halves didn't align perfectly. Like the keyboard half of the phone would slide a couple mm past where it was supposed to. It bothered me, but I thought it was trivial...
Well, now I suspect that the over-extension of the sliding mechanism was putting force on the bezel each time I closed the phone, and eventually it will break a piece of the bottom, too.
Otherwise the phone is pristine. No scratches or scuffs. This is obviously due to a mechanical defect. But big shock, I took it to the Sprint store and they said they don't have the parts to fix it in stock, and they can't order me a replacement because it's "purely cosmetic". Called customer service and got the same answer. They offered to let me pay the $100 deductible for an Asurion claim, even though both defects and normal wear and tear are covered under the no-fee ESR program.
It's really more than a cosmetic issue. With parts of the bezel cracked off, the phone snags everything, I'm afraid I'm going to rip my pocket open and crack the thing off worse.
I am about the the point of frying the circuitry and saying it broke. This is such nonsense. Why does Sprint always have to make it such a hassle to fix phones? Every single replacement I've ever gotten from them has been like pulling teeth. I pay $8 a month so when crap like this happens, it's covered.
Anyone have any advice for me? I used to have the energy to spend hours and hours hounding Sprint to give me the service I'm actually paying for, but I'm not sure I do anymore.

This happened to my phone (still the original) months ago but only on one side. That, the tw strip screen burn in, and the chrome chipping are the physical wear n tear defects I live with. Good luck getting yours resolved. I'm sure it's a gamble when getting a replacement.

I'm not looking to screw Sprint here or anything.

Please do not discuss fraud on public forums.
Thank you

How is it fraud!? If sprint can't cover damages from a faulty device, then what else would be left to do but break it in a way that they're forced to cover? They make enough $ with the monthly "protection" fees. Just my $0.2
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA

It is what XDA considers fraud so I have to go by their rules...sorry.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium

I guess I understand the site rules, but I'm the one being frauded here. It's a little bizarre to allow people to post WiFi hacks that let you get a service without paying for it, but trying to get Sprint to fix an honest-to-god problem is somehow not allowed. Oh what a world.

Sounds like a discussion between you and Sprint Executive services. I just can't let that kind of talk sit in a "public" area.....if you catch my drift.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium

Yep, we are definitely here to enjoy our phone support. The countless hours that go into the ROMs, Themes, and apps that sprint doesn't include are the reason XDA was invented in the first place. I respect the rules of XDA and I abide by them, but if sprint can't cover faulty devices even though we pay for coverage, then what should people do? Its a pointless argument, but frustrating the least.

I love you Kenny I'm done commenting on this thread.

If it was noticed when the phone was first received it should have been brought back immediately for another one. This is the kind of thing that should be taken to the manager of that store. Reports filed with the Better Business Bureau get an immediate call from Executive Services as well as letters to Dan Hesse' office. There are many more legal options to be pursued

Samsung Epic moisture indicator?

I was curious if anyone can tell me where the moisture indicators are on the Epic, and what they look like in regular state and tripped state. I only see a sticker on my battery (which I think is one) but it is completely white.
My phone isn't acting right, and it is quite a drive for me to the service center. I don't want to waste my time if they aren't going to warranty it. I didn't get it wet or anything, but I have heard of so many stories where due to the Florida humidity they falsely activate.
One on the battery and one inside the headset jack
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I assume the headset one can only be seen if you take it apart???
I don't think that is a very good place for one. WAY too exposed to humidity. Not only that, but it sucks if my headset plug has moisture and I plug it in. INSTANT trip.
Can you tell me what it looks like tripped and not tripped?
I think the ones from samsung turn purple
ive fully torn down mine and i didnt see one in the headphone jack. i wonder if they are from different runs? launch day, you?

I believe not tripped it'll have blue markings on it, and tripped is completely white, but...
At our store we don't go by the sticker, it's more of a flag than anything else. What we're really looking for are burns and corrosion.
If you want, it's really easy to take off the back of your epic. Just remove battery and cover, unscrew the small phillips screws in the back, and wedge something small and plastic around the seam between the back plate and the chrome trim. You just have to keep a lookout for the buttons falling so you don't lose them.
What you would be looking for is discoloration on any of the metal.
But if you don't feel that adventurous, here's a little piece of advice: you can start a service repair ticket online before you head to the store. They'll be a little a more lenient when you get there and if there's only a tiny amount of corrosion, they'll probably help you out; they don't want their customer satisfaction score to take a hit if they tell you to go pound sand and you already have a ticket created.

ugh my battery sticker is completely white. The thing is that I have submerged two phones before, and didn't even go to the store. I knew the phone was fried and called asurian (sp?). This one is TOTALLY legit not a water problem and I am going to REALLY be upset if they give me a hard time over it.
I don't feel like taking the phone apart, and I checked the website, but couldn't find where to open a repair ticket. Are you simply just talking about clicking the "make an appointment" link at my local branch?
If you are talking about the make an appointment link, it isn't working for my local Sprint Repair center (I assume because they are not a corporate store).
SIGH. I am seriously going to be upset if they try playing the water gimmick with me.
Well, I've had plenty of phones that had some water damage come in but aren't completely inoperable, just little quirks that hard resets and reflashing don't solve. You'd be surprised what a tiny amount of water can do.
So are you saying your store is one of those 3rd party authorized retailers? I didn't know they did repairs...
There's always the possibility there isn't any water damage lol

Yeah, this one does repairs. They are exclusively a Sprint store, just not corporate, but they do repairs. Have brought my wifes phone in there before.
You are right, it may not be water, but I use my phone every day at the gym + Florida moisture. I am concerned that these stupid sensors may be too sensitive and I may be dinged for something that I shouldn't.
I guess we will see tomorrow.

ASC's do repairs, which is probably what the store close to you is. They're graded based off of surveys generated on tickets too. What you need to do is call customer support (*2), they'll create a ticket on your device and direct you to the store where the ASC will pull up that ticket and probably get graded.
Also, there's no moisture stickers that I know of besides the mentioned, as was said before, they won't look at those anyway. It's corrosion that's the killer.
So just to follow-up, I pulled into the parking lot, and realized that I totally forgot to call customer service and create a ticket. I was pissed off at myself, but drove all the way out there so I figured I had to try it.
Got there and he tried updating my PRL/Profile, but as I got into the conversation with him, he realized that I did a great deal of troubleshooting, and didn't give it a second look. He created the ticket, and the phone will be in tomorrow.
So basically all of my angst was for nothing. I am thinking that since the phone was working, and turned on, that they probably figured that it wasn't any "abuse" of water damage. Thanks for all of the information.

Broken EPIC? Don't use Asurion ONLINE!

My EPIC got broken by a family member last week. That night, I went to www.phoneclaim.com as suggested by a local Sprint associate. I filled out the forms after reading all the nice comments saying how fast it was.
Every time I went to check back, I got a message saying the phone was out of stock and it would take 1-3 business days from the claim to ship.
At the end of business today, I called them, to find out that it was an erroneous message.
At the end, when they asked if I had any questions, I asked why this was so easy for the phone rep when I was getting those messages? And there was also a note on the website that was meant to discourage calling, by saying that the phone reps didn't have any more information than what I was seeing. Obviously wrong.
I was told that the EPIC was a high demand phone, and it was being used to replace other phones, so the system was putting claims for it on "hold". Sounds like bull to me.
Anyway- just sayin'- if you break yours, don't bother with an online claim, just call.
I did an online claim 2 weeks ago. It seemed fine to me. Got it next day! I even asked them if I could get a nexus s4g, but was denied!
Kinda off topic but I HATE my refurbished epic. The digitizer is raised above the bevel in one corner, call speaker is twingy, capacitive buttons are not sensitive at all, worst of all there is screen burn in all over and I can clearly see the word undo on white screens. I am trying to get it replaced with a brand new one but they are giving me **** for it.
This is how most ppl end up with a nexus s. I don't want one but if I'm offered one how am I supposed to refuse?

I don't understand why they can't spend a few seconds just to turn the phone on and make sure it functions before sending it back out.
I have best buy's insurance, sent my phone in for repair after getting shot screen first by an airsoft gun. The phone I received in return the capacitive buttons hardly worked. I had to smash the buttons for it to begin to register.

my refurb epic has the loudest vibration ive ever seen on a phone. not strongest, loudest. like the vibrator knocking up against something inside.
I think we all have replacements? Hm anyway my screen digitizer has a similar problem with it being above the bevel at one corner

This is why I don't bother with insurance on phones. If I do something to my phone that destroys it, that's my own damn fault and I'll bite the bullet to spend full price on a replacement, get a used one on Craigslist or just activate an old phone in a kitchen drawer. If the phone is defective, that's what manufacturer warranties are for. Now if the insurance guaranteed a new replacement with any sort of claim, I might consider it, but I know too many people who got burned by these companies with ****ty refurbished replacments.

I'm running my 4th epic. First one went in water, so I had it replaced. They replaced it with one that got no signal, and it was hell trying to get them to realize they sentence a bad phone. But I got a new one. Then about two weeks ago I sort of bricked it, (its not bricked because I can get to download mode, but I can't get recovery to read the sd card.) And here I am with number 4.

I'm so glad I've taking care of my baby no scratches and have been running "naked" for a couple of months now and still have an extra screen cover somewhere I've dropped it once, stupid bus driver , other than that its been all good. Love my epic would hate to damage it seriously.... as would anyone else.

My wife has an Evo Shift she got from Asurion, seems okay. We didn't use the online claim form, we called as soon as we realized her phone was gone.
My out-of-the-box Moment has a bug that would turn on voice commands if I moved the headphone jack just right. Never bothered to try to get Radio Shack to replace it. The GPS died on it, so I'd have a claim if I ever activated it again.
Hmm...old age creeps in. My Epic is my second epic... the original died within a couple of days, the microphone wouldn't work on the phone. Got a new one out of the box from the Shack and it's been good to me.
Ok now that this thread is fully derailed
Do you guys know what I should do? My refurb epic has burnt in bubbles all over the screen, the word "undo", and PM. It also has very unresponsive capacitive keys. And feels like a ringing bell if tapped right lol.
But yeah do I have enough proof to get it replaced? I'll settle for just the screen being replaced. I would prefer them to just give me a new one however I am aprehensive to go in since I see on here a lot of people get offered a nexus s out of this situation.

On second epic after going thru about 8 Moments, mostly known issues like GPS and screen issues. Too bad cuz that phone had potential. It had become unusable.
my sister dropped her phone and cracked the screen, called put a claim in, and they overnighted her an GS II Epic Touch. They didn't even want her broken epic back. She is on a business account so I dunno if that has anything to do with it.

I read somewhere that the moment had a gpu that was never activated. That nugget of info kept me from getting the epic earlier sadly.
My Asurion Epic was like new. Refurb, supposedly, but a nice one. I can't complain.

Can't be anymore dissapointed by sprint.

Took my phone in today cause I can only hear people while I'm talking if I have the speaker on. I get there show them my phone and they say sorry we can't help you because I have the smallest crack in the world on the bottom left of my screen. I even asked if they could just fix it and I would pay and again they said no and that I need to pay 100$ for a replacement. I feel like that is extremly stupid and straight bull fresh out the ass. I'm curious what third party protection you used and how helpful it is in a situation like a damaged speaker or mic -- I had a damaged speaker and Sprint turned it around quickly at the store level which made me somewhat pleased with their service even if the in-store associates were awful (one was standing in the middle of the store and swearing up a store about how ignorant his last customer was and how disinterested he was in talking to them because they weren't buying a new contract). Sadly my mother didn't have the same experience with a cracked screen and actually gave up and just purchased a new Epic for less.
As much as my mother's experience was frustrating I don't know that I put it entirely on Sprint -- at my last job I did some work servicing PCs at a couple AT&T and Verizon stores -- from what I saw all the employees were pretty much the bottom of the sales barrel. They're rude, their conduct is horrible, and they have no customer service skills. They care about the next sale and nothing else.
I've been pretty pessimistic about the level of service in the industry as a whole as a result. If I'm wrong and there's protection plans that are worth it I'd love to hear about it.
-X
Well I believe their policy is to refer all cracked screens to the insurance which you need the $100 deductible. Seeing as you went in for a damaged ear piece. I can see their logic in the matter.
To work on the ear piece they need to take the phone apart. Seeing as the screen is already has a tiny crack. It wouldn't take much to further damage it. Why take the risk?
If they were to break the screen even more in the process of trying to fix the ear piece. Then the customer would blame the sprint store and want a new phone for free.
Seems to be logical for me. But this is just my opinion

Try a different store. The store around me replaced the screen for free once after I had water damaged it accidentally, which broke the screen. Idk if they would've had I told them about the water damage, but that shouldn't matter. They also replaced my phone for free when I damaged one of the battery contact things that keeps it in place. I bet most of the stores in the area aren't as nice, but as long as you find one like the one I go to, they'll fix it for you.

When my cousin busted his epic the digitizer and glass was intact, the screen underneath was cracked and the corporate sprint repair center told me their policies changed because a repair tech cut his hand on a broken glass. I told him that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, if anything the tech should have been disciplined for not wearing proper PPE, not take it out on the entire sprint customer base.
He agreed and told me to try a non corporate store

Exactly. You gamble that the phone has to break within 20 months or whatever, or you loose on the TEP deal (don't remember how much mine was before I cancelled it). Sprint wouldn't have done anything to fix my Epic anyway since the account shows that I'm using a Diamond, *chuckle*.

Sprint M&Ps regarding S&R
Provided your handset doesn't have more than 2 cracks on the screen with both cracks no longer than 1" and no other physical damage to the handset, the Sprint TC should have replaced your screen without referring you to Asurion. The TC or LTC need to go into RSP on their PC station and reread the MP&Ps pertaining to S&R. I would escalate to the store's SM and if you don't get resolution from him/her, tell the SM you want to skip his/or her DM and talk directly to the ARD who is right about the DM.

TEP has always been pretty much useless. Why pay that much monthly and they still charge a deductible, plus you might get a refurb! I've seen good Epics on craigslist for that $100 they want to charge you...
My phone recently got sparkly clean, and broken, in the washing machine.
Cowboom.com has them for $80. They're finishing around $110 on ebay. So, there's 2 options where you'd even have some recourse if the ESN was bad, or whatever.
So, yeah, insurance really only makes sense if you think you'll break something in the time it takes to unbox a top of the line phone, activate it, and get it to your car.
As far as I can tell you're paying almost $200 no matter what, and $300 if you ever use it. You can get a Galaxy S II for $260 right now.
Now, obviously there are some people who it worked out for, so I don't need to hear how you got 15 "free" phones. It's a bad bet for most instances.

Amoled cracked.

Well my wife had her s4 in her purse (in a fully protected grant and back flip case) and today it cracked out of nowhere. The phone is obviously like brand new with no scratches, including on the screen. However the underneath amoled is cracked.
From my understanding, Samsung isn't acknowledging any kind of design flaws on these right? I've read many similar reports. We both got ours the first week, so it would be one of the first batches.
What's the best way to get this fixed and how much does it cost?
If outer physical parts aren't damaged you could get it fixed by warranty.
I did it. Just call Samsung and tell them screen looks totally fine but when turned on, it shows as if you are looking through the spider web. They will honor the warranty repair.

I called a warramty service center and they disagreed. They said a cracked, even if only inside the screen, is not covered under warranty
Hmm. That's funny. I called and they wanted photo of device on and off under the light reflected environment. I guess they wanted to compare non scratched surface and spider web effect on screen. I emailed the guy and he got me with warranty replacement.
You might want to keep calling Samsung.
This is what I said: all of the sudden I'm seeing screen with bunch of lines. My screen shows no signs of any sracthes nor damages when turned off. But when turned on, it shows.
He asked do all lines meet at any point, I am assuming he wanted to find out maybe it was stepped on or gotten any strong pressure at one point.
I said no, he wanted picture of it to make sure my story checks before we move forward.
I took few pictures sent it to him and he took care of it.

Well mine does have a small little cracked in it. It's in the very bottom right edge of the amoled. So they said that would make it considered physical damage, regardless of if it was because of a weaker part and we didn't do anything.
I was considering a gently used S4 on craigslist but decided not to get it after seeing so many scary reports of damaged amoled S4s. It is especially risky given that the warranty claim may not work for second owners... I found this thread that someone was able to get it fixed in Singapore and it is a known issue that affects a percentage of users...

However there are mixed reports regarding Samsung's willingness to repair the damaged digitizer.

asurion and replacement question!!!

delete please i misunderstood the asurion policies.
Asurion insurance is on the specific phone, identified by the IMEI number. I don't see how it would help to swap the SIM, since the insurance is not on the phone number.

It would be on my line I have insurance on my line not my wife's she broke her phone so if I swap Sims it would show my line meaning the line with insurance, tied to the account

I found a page with Asurion info. about the equipment covered. It appears that if you swap a phone to a line, there has to be a record of airtime logged for that phone right before the phone was damaged, in order for that phone to be covered. It also states that the coverage is tied to the phone's IMEI.

New ones are about $280-320 on Ebay with Valid ESN, thats how I replaced mine after similar drop as your wife. I had my original repaired but it had colored lines and ghosting occasionally due to repair shop doing something wrong (They replaced screen 4 times due to various problems and too much pressure under display) when it seperated a little it started working properly after a few days of getting a refund. They finally gave up and gave me a refund and I used that to buy one on eBay and now I have 2 working phones lol.
nice i am going to go to the whole repair shop first if all else fails ill sell the flacky one on ebay and buy a new one lol i paid 200 for mine i got lucky and came with a wireless charger and a quick view case but this case is **** i am looking at iceptio's and what not but vzw cases are very hard to find stupid verizon and changing it to make it there own!
