My EPIC got broken by a family member last week. That night, I went to www.phoneclaim.com as suggested by a local Sprint associate. I filled out the forms after reading all the nice comments saying how fast it was.
Every time I went to check back, I got a message saying the phone was out of stock and it would take 1-3 business days from the claim to ship.
At the end of business today, I called them, to find out that it was an erroneous message.
At the end, when they asked if I had any questions, I asked why this was so easy for the phone rep when I was getting those messages? And there was also a note on the website that was meant to discourage calling, by saying that the phone reps didn't have any more information than what I was seeing. Obviously wrong.
I was told that the EPIC was a high demand phone, and it was being used to replace other phones, so the system was putting claims for it on "hold". Sounds like bull to me.
Anyway- just sayin'- if you break yours, don't bother with an online claim, just call.
I did an online claim 2 weeks ago. It seemed fine to me. Got it next day! I even asked them if I could get a nexus s4g, but was denied!
Kinda off topic but I HATE my refurbished epic. The digitizer is raised above the bevel in one corner, call speaker is twingy, capacitive buttons are not sensitive at all, worst of all there is screen burn in all over and I can clearly see the word undo on white screens. I am trying to get it replaced with a brand new one but they are giving me **** for it.
This is how most ppl end up with a nexus s. I don't want one but if I'm offered one how am I supposed to refuse?

I don't understand why they can't spend a few seconds just to turn the phone on and make sure it functions before sending it back out.
I have best buy's insurance, sent my phone in for repair after getting shot screen first by an airsoft gun. The phone I received in return the capacitive buttons hardly worked. I had to smash the buttons for it to begin to register.

my refurb epic has the loudest vibration ive ever seen on a phone. not strongest, loudest. like the vibrator knocking up against something inside.
I think we all have replacements? Hm anyway my screen digitizer has a similar problem with it being above the bevel at one corner

This is why I don't bother with insurance on phones. If I do something to my phone that destroys it, that's my own damn fault and I'll bite the bullet to spend full price on a replacement, get a used one on Craigslist or just activate an old phone in a kitchen drawer. If the phone is defective, that's what manufacturer warranties are for. Now if the insurance guaranteed a new replacement with any sort of claim, I might consider it, but I know too many people who got burned by these companies with ****ty refurbished replacments.

I'm running my 4th epic. First one went in water, so I had it replaced. They replaced it with one that got no signal, and it was hell trying to get them to realize they sentence a bad phone. But I got a new one. Then about two weeks ago I sort of bricked it, (its not bricked because I can get to download mode, but I can't get recovery to read the sd card.) And here I am with number 4.

Same here, and it was when I was still using flip phones.
I'm so glad I've taking care of my baby no scratches and have been running "naked" for a couple of months now and still have an extra screen cover somewhere I've dropped it once, stupid bus driver , other than that its been all good. Love my epic would hate to damage it seriously.... as would anyone else.

My wife has an Evo Shift she got from Asurion, seems okay. We didn't use the online claim form, we called as soon as we realized her phone was gone.
My out-of-the-box Moment has a bug that would turn on voice commands if I moved the headphone jack just right. Never bothered to try to get Radio Shack to replace it. The GPS died on it, so I'd have a claim if I ever activated it again.
Hmm...old age creeps in. My Epic is my second epic... the original died within a couple of days, the microphone wouldn't work on the phone. Got a new one out of the box from the Shack and it's been good to me.
Ok now that this thread is fully derailed
Do you guys know what I should do? My refurb epic has burnt in bubbles all over the screen, the word "undo", and PM. It also has very unresponsive capacitive keys. And feels like a ringing bell if tapped right lol.
But yeah do I have enough proof to get it replaced? I'll settle for just the screen being replaced. I would prefer them to just give me a new one however I am aprehensive to go in since I see on here a lot of people get offered a nexus s out of this situation.

On second epic after going thru about 8 Moments, mostly known issues like GPS and screen issues. Too bad cuz that phone had potential. It had become unusable.
my sister dropped her phone and cracked the screen, called put a claim in, and they overnighted her an GS II Epic Touch. They didn't even want her broken epic back. She is on a business account so I dunno if that has anything to do with it.

My Asurion Epic was like new. Refurb, supposedly, but a nice one. I can't complain.

lol tmobile insurance is a joke. but i'm making him pay $200 to cancel one of my spare lines so i can give my GF one of the G2's that im selling. im hoping it doesn't come to that because i really don't want to do that. my guess is that i just need to replace the LCD. anyone care to chime in?
The impact could have damaged several internals. Without opening it up, you don't really know what you have to work with.

RE
i had a similar problem with my phone ... my screen went white with random black lines on it ... i might have sat with the phone in my pocket earlier not too sure ... anyways so the screen wouldn't show anything but the phone worked otherwise, i can hear it receiving notifications, and i can even receive phone calls and answer them if I slide my finger across the screen ... the phone was rooted, and i wasn't able to do a hard reset on it ...
took the phone back to bell on the 3rd, and last monday i heard back from them saying that the LCD was cracked and needed replacement ... which is not covered under the waranty since it's a physical damage and it would cost $150 CND to replace it ... should be getting the phone back this monday...
After replacing my Desire Z via FutureShop warranty (for battery issues) I somehow ended up with the lines on my screen Christmas eve, however the LCD was not cracked. The lines would move around and change in brightness as I did things on the phone (opening apps, flipping keyboard out, etc). If the lines don't move then it's more likely a crack in the screen. My issue was more likely a faulty ribbon/connection. I carry my phone in an inner breast pocket on my winter jacket, so I definitely didn't crush it or anything, either.
So back to FutureShop I went, only a week after the first replacement, and they gave me another new one right away. Between 2 stores that I have visited my 2 replacements are supposedly the only 2 replacements that have been done since the phone launched.
My 3rd one seems to be doing well, no battery issues, so far no screen issues.
I guess my point is, if you can get a phone from a retailer that offers a decent warranty, do it. I bought my phone outright at $500, the warranty was $10 a month.. I fell for it, but I'm very very glad that I did. Although HTC may have covered me, I would have been without the phone for a lot of time, and once they found out that I'd unlocked it they probably would have left me in the cold.

I had exactly the same, it is very very likely that "only" the LCD that is broken.
I got an replacement from from ebay (it's about 60 USD) and replaced it following IntuitiveNipples teardown guide at http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down
Its' a little bit of fiddling but in the end not that complicated (tryin to remember which screws should go into which place was the hardest part)
Thanks for the input guys. Very much appreciate it. Looks like ill order the lcd when I get my next paycheck :O

I have this problem too, and eventually (like 2 or so mins in with the screen on) the screen gets dark areas in the corners. We're guessing it is screen damage (which is strange becuse the phone hasn't been dropped or anything, was just in my pocket). My question is what should I do - should I send it to HTC for an exchange or will I get issues with that because the phone is rooted, in which case should I just get a new screen and replace it?

Has anyone been able to sucessfully swapped the bad screen phone for a good one with HTC?

Thank you in advance for the reply.
i seen a poll here the other day about this. some one posted up the percentages for getting a good screen back from HTC and T-mobile. both were pretty high. i got mine first MT4G march 11th with a good screen from radioshack.
shouldnt cost anything since your going through warranty so shouldnt hurt to atleast go ahead and try.

Just sent one directly to HTC (bought second hand) a week ago. It's already on the way back. I've complained about the screen visibility from the sides and in bright daylight, and attached a note with one of the screen comparison pics found on the net. I'll see what screen I get in a few days.
I spoke to T-mobile this weekend after I traded my G2 for what turned out to be a MT4G with a bad screen. Since I had insurance, they put the order through for me immediately, but unfortunately it hasn't shipped out yet. Won't get it till next week at this rate...
My original MT4G had a good screen, but a bad power button. The replacement I got at the store was another unit with a good screen, and the power button was different, so the guys at the store pulled a bunch of them out and tested them all. They all had good screens.
I think the likelihood of getting bad screens has gone down with the newer shipments. They all also seem to be made in China, while some of the older ones were made in Taiwan.
I called HTC and they said to send it in for "repair". That means that I could be without a phone for like 10 or more days. That sucks. Why cant they just replace it and thats it?
Anyway, I havent taken it to T-Mobile becuase I bought mine from Craigslist (new). So I am not sure what they would say. If they ask me for prove of purchase or something like that, I am out of luck.
Any suggestions?

add insurance to your account, and then say you dropped it and now the screen doesn't look right. don't say it came like that, because then they will tell you it's a warranty issue and not an insurance issue.

Call tmobile and make sure they have your ime #. Hang up then call back in a few days with the complaint. They are not going to ask you where u bought it, and if they do lie and say it was at a store
just wanted to add my 2 cents real quick...
for anyone that doesn't know when you swap your phone they send you a refurbished one to fulfill your warranty requirements.
normally refurbished phones sell for a 1/3 of the price as it was brand new so its pretty much like swapping out your $500 phone for a $150 phone...
just something to think about
this blows.
of all the crap going on in life right now, the one thing I could count on was my Evo. music, games, and kindle for the commute now that i take the train to my internship.
a couple of days ago I noticed the phone wasn't charging. if i just plugged in the power cord it wouldn't charge, but if i pulled it down, so that it would be at an angle, it would charge. but of course i couldn't keep it that way all night.
opened up the phone and found that the charging plug thing was coming off on at least three of the four big solder points. we just recently fixed my LCD tv with a cheap soldering kit so i figured we'd solder those points and it would work. no difference.
tried it twice and put the phone back together twice, it would turn on and finish loading but wouldnt charge.
opened it again, took out the one screw holding the pcb board to the screen, and looked around to see if there was anything that could be done from that side. i don't think my dad did anything there. i've checked since and nothing got even a scratch. put it back together.
this time the phone vibrates when i turn it on, but the screen never comes on.
opened it again, the charging plug had completely fallen off. the solder does not stick at all.
at this point, i don't care. i can buy a battery charger, and I can remove the memory card to transfer files. i'm happy with my rom so i could live not being able to directly hook up the phone and change system files.
but no screen?!!
so at this moment, for the first time since September, my Evo is out of commission and I can't do anything about it.
anyone know what may have happened here? any solutions? i'm willing to try any suggestions since i can't use the phone at the moment and I need it back.
thanks.
You likely could have had it fixed under HTC's warranty. But once they see it's been opened I believe the warranty is instantly void. You could take it in to the store and see if they will warranty it out and charge you the $35 advanced exchange fee.
Pretty much what he said lol. If you already opened the phone you have voided your warranty so sprint won't want to fix it neither will HTC. Your only two options are fix it yourself with parts off ebay. Second one is run it over with the car pay 100 to Asurion if you have TEP and they will send you a refurb and you send your old one back to them other then that you kinda screwed the pooch when you opend your phone up.
Hope you get it worked out.
i have agree since you cracked it open you screwed yourself :/
the phone hasn't had a valid warranty since last year...so I didn't mess it up.
my question here is what could have messed up the phone. not what messed up the warranty!
you can pick up and evo for between $150-200 on craigslist. just sell your broken one for parts, you would be shocked how many people would buy it.

I've been lucky enough to have never needed my phone replaced and I've had over 30 or 40 phones thanks to connections at best buy.
My question is why do people hate them? Obviously your "brand new" (and i use parentheses because people think a 8 month old phone doesn't deserve a refurbished one as a replacement) has the exact same chance of not working properly. I can understand one month old but anything past that is not new anymore.

I think part of the issue with phones is that people don't want something that someone has had pressed against their cheek or stuffed in their pocket for the past few months.
This is apart from the obvious fact that a refurb it may still be broken.
I have personally had very good luck with refurbed cameras.

Honestly, because I've never received a refurbished phone that didn't fail on me within a month.
I don't care if it's "refurbished" or "new" I just want it to work 100% and not fail on me.
I'm inclined to agree that after a certain point you aren't really 'deserving' of a brand new device. I think it's simply the fact that the device isn't 'brand new and out of box' and has been 'handled.' I guess I can sort of understand why people might have a problem with it, but if it works and isn't entirely flawed in some manner, then what is the problem? I had 2 refurbished PS3's die on me in a year. Obviously I got 'lucky.' In that regard I understand why someone would be hesitant to get one. But more often than not refurbs actually work as intended. Shocking. But the practice is a tried and relatively true one.
I think you should get a freebee.. one free new phone. Anything after that.. refurbished

I just activated my refurbished phone. It took Sprint a month to get one for me. This one doesn't charge at all. The store said it would take at least a week to get me another one. When I asked what I should do about my phone in the meantime, the employee told me I could bring my phone into the store everyday to have them charge it. He was serious.
The icing on the cake is that they won't call when the new phone comes in. I'm supposed to call them everyday and ask if it's there. But the store doesn't ever answer their phone! After going through the phone tree twice, it just says "Sorry, all reps are busy, please make an appointment online." Somehow this is the only store in all of San Francisco that can even do replacements. I ****ing hate Sprint. [/RANT]

The term over the phone refers to the fact he can get a replacement by speaking to someone over the phone instead of having to deal with the situation he has at his local sprint store.

Will they send you a phone if they can't verify the issue? Is there a specific support number you call?

Yea they will. You should be honest about the problem because if you lie and sprint determines there is no issue with they phone they can charge you an additional amount.

Sprint has questionable refurbishment techniques. I've been told that the whole process is outsourced. I've read a lot about people getting refurbished phones that have known problems, like screen separation and bright spots on the screen. In many cases, it seems likely that those are the reasons why the phone was returned in the first place, and their refurbishing does not take care of the issue for which the phone was returned.
That said, I used to be on a Centro, and I went through three new ones before I ended up with a refurb. The refurb lasted a hell of a lot longer than the new ones. The only problem with it is that it was kind of gross when I got it. It had smudges and one of the buttons was a little cracked. But the phone itself worked great for the year and a half that I used it.
And yea, there's the gross factor too. Who knows who had their face pressed up against my refurb phone. Ick.
I don't like the idea that it could have been thumped around, and only the most obvious failing component was replaced, leaving you with a "ready to break" phone. That being said, I've never actually had a problem with a refurbished unit, (phone or other). All in the head I guess.

I've seen as many new Evo's that had the screen separation issues, charger issues etc etc. I can see there being a bit more of a chance that a refurbished device isn't going to be up to par. I like the idea of maybe a new device and every device following is a refurb. As for the dirty screens ... maybe that's how I caught that face tattoo known as cheek herpes.

Well... DUH, some people have no sense of humor, must be due to lack of root... I dunno.
So far only on my first refurb from August last year. So far so good (knocks wood). My launch day (002)Evo's 4G got up, and gone (radio was shot). The refurb is a launch day 003. As with anything you put in contact with your body for the first time you should wipe it down first even if new(some of the toxic chemicals used in production are rather nasty).
Lg sent my nexus 4 back from repair. They were supposed to replace the screen but never did. Upon receiving the package I noticed those expletives didn't even put the screws back! There are just holes in the bottom. I called to complain but it seems my only option is to send it back in. I don't want those people anywhere near my phone again.
I tried finding the screws online but no real luck. I've no clue as to their exact spec. Only know they are t5 5.2mm torx screws. Can someone help me out? Any ideas where to get a couple... Or have a broken phone they want to sell the screws?
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.
Why don't you ask LG to send you some screws?

one can only hope.... cause karma's a real *****.
after 5 rmas what makes you think you will be happy with the 6th one? im surprised that these companies let customers exchange their phones this much, there should be a limit then just full refund.

Wow... lots of hate. I want the phone, so that's why I have so many RMA's. I wanted the cycle to end so I sent it for repair instead. phone came back with no work done but missing the screws on the bottom. Call it karma if you want, but if you think I like going through the play store and dealing with them and their issues and shipping phones back and receiving "new" phones with glue spots, scratched screens, and dead pixels then I must just be a masochist. Am I picky? Sure I am, but other than the phone that would heat up like crazy and reboot multiple times per day despite factory reset, reflashing stock image, etc, all of the issues were screen related. You spend the vast majority of the time on the phone looking at a screen. Plus, this is a nexus... refund... what else is there out there for new hardware, unlocked, stock, etc? I would have paid $700 outright for the thing if google was charging that much, but I expect the phone to have a screen that's defect free.
This isn't something new with nexus/play store devices. Check out the threads on the Nexus 10 regarding screen, and case issues and the exchanges. People are getting devices marked as new with broken seals. I've found with every Nexus (except the Galaxy Nexus) I've purchased, if you get a great one from the start then awesome. However, if you happen to get a dud, you will spend some time trying to get one that's defect free through the RMA process.
For the few that posted some links, thanks, but though they are torx screws of the approximate size, they aren't the exact screws. Seems no one save for the manufacturer sells these. After about 3 hours on the phone in total with LG, they are supposed to send me 2 but they said it would take 9 days to ship. I guess they have to order it from Korea.
I had and lg g2x that I replaced about 6 times before I gave up. I was not being picky, the phones were not functioning correctly. You pay for a defect free device so expect one. At least you are getting the screws sent.

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but I guess you just got screwed by LG - pun totally intended  Sorry, it just had to be said.
On that note, rather than RMA'ing my N4 for a defective screen (well, it sure cracked pretty easily!), I just ordered a replacement front assembly and intend to do the repair myself. Hopefully it arrives this week, because I really miss my Nexus!! If I was planning on spending $600 on a phone, I would've went with an Optimus G or Xperia Z, but I figured I could save a few bucks by going Nexus, and the developer support around here is bar-none! Alas, with this replacement screen, I spent that much anyway... Still ticked off about it, but what can ya do...
So, since it's been a couple months, how about a status update. Did you get the screws? Another device? Are you happy yet? Please, do share.
I'm pretty sure he got the screws from the last time I talked to him.
And to those hating on him are u kidding me. He paid for a fully functional phone and that's what he deserved. He did nothing that I wouldn't have done and he had some pretty defective phones trust me. So before judging know the whole story because like someone said on this thread "karmas a b*tch".

Jayrod wasn't and isn't being picky, I've seen pics of the defective n4's and let me tell you, they were very defective! It happens, he didn't want to keep playing the rma game, but he paid for a defective free device. None of the phones he was sent I would keep if they were given to me. Nobody likes to have money on their credit cards tied up, do you know how much money was on hold for those devices? A lot. Not that he cared about that, but keep that in mind when making remarks. These phones weren't sent to him without some sort of hold. Who would go through that for something miniscule?

Yeah, I completely agree with those statements. I'd hate to be in a situation like that, especially considering my "credit card" is actually a debit card with Visa, so those "holds" would be on my real money. It's bad enough I barely went 5 days with my Nexus before the screen broke, but to RMA a device 5 times is a little ridiculous - not necessarily for Jayrod's part, but the fact that he's had so many problems for something he should have had defect-free in the first place. After the first 2 RMA's, someone at Google and/or LG should have personally inspected the third device to absolutely be sure with 110% certainty that it was perfect. OK, so I made a little joke earlier, but I really do feel for the guy. The quality control issues have been nuts, and hearing stories like this makes me wish he would just be given a free N4 just for all the trouble! For all that and then getting back an unfixed phone with missing screws is just unforgivable. I could understand his frustration and just wanting what he paid good money for! Which is why I now hope he's finally got a good one.
