is rogers or at&t best for fido - Galaxy Tab General

Have read the 54 pages of a thread but still not certain what is best way to go. Have a Fido grandfather plan and an iphone and wish to get a tab and use my sim with an adapter but dont know if I am best to start with a Rogers one or At&t and then unlock and root etc. Want to be able to use as phone and data hopefully on 3g as my iphone runs on 3g and best I have been able to determine Fido in Canada is 850 or 1900 gsm. Thanks in advance

Have been reading more and nobody seems to have a definitive answer so I will post what I think is how this works and hopefully somebody brighter than me will clarify it. This is all because the term 3g gets tossed around way too easily and this gets misinterpreted.
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900 are actually 3g meaning 3rd generation wireless technology but 2g for speeds
now is where it gets confusing
UMTS850, UMTS900, UMTS1700, UMTS1900, UMTS2100 are 3g but faster speeds
now in the case of the Samsung Galaxy tab both the AT&T and the T mobile have the first 4 mentioned GSM 850,900,1800,1900 but the difference is in the UMTS speeds depending on the model GTP 1000 or SGH T849 SGH i987 GT 1000r combinations I have found are:
SGH i987 UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100
SGH T849 UMTS1700, UMTS2100
GT P1000 UMTS900, UMTS1900, UMTS2100
GT 1000r UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100
Now as I understand it
Bell, Telus, MTS, Fido, Rodgers use 850/1900UMTS for the faster speeds and the GSM for slower speeds then just to confuse it more Rodgers has what is called a 3.5g that runs on HSDPA but this shows as data links not voice.
Mobilicity, Videotron, and Wind use UMTS1700
So depending on where you live and which provider you use they all will do 2g but if you want a hope of faster 3g you need to start with the right model to hack as the modem frequencies are hardware chip based not change able with a simple software upgrade, so for me it seems either the Rogers supplied model which is called a GT1000r I think or an AT&T are the place to start.

Yes. Rogers or AT&T will work fine with Fido.
T-Mobile will work on Wind / Mobilicity.
Newer Bell and Telus devices will work on Fido too. (This is more gray, but my i9000m works great on Fido as one example)

can frequencies be flashed? Is that what radio roms are?

Sorry if newbie question. Got HTC tmobile dash 3g wanna flash to use on at&t. Friend says HTC indicated the tmobile dash 3g wouldnt work on at&t 3g frequency of 850MHZ. Seen some info on flashing the radio? Does that mean i could flash the phone so it would work on 850MHZ or is it a hardware limitation in the phone?
Thanks
Matt
Unfortunately no. The radios are in the hardware/firmware. Supposedly all the Maple's have all the bands, just a matter of finding a way to unlock them. Flashing the radio partitions will not do it either. Tough to say why HTC went through such hassle to localize their devices. The only Maple's that will work in USA on AT&T is MAPL120 (HTC Maple S522) and MAPL130 (HTC Maple S523). Dash3G will only do GPRS/EDGE.
HTC Mapl100 frequencies available?
Thanks for responding ookba. I guess i will try to email HTC and ask them if the Mapl100 has the bands just like the Mapl120. If so, then they probably locked out certain bands at tmobiles request. Which is bs in my opinion. Does tmobile think anyone will leave a carrier just cause of a certain phone with all the phone competition out there? I stay with a carrier cause of pricing and customer service, not phones. If anyone knows about the bands on the Mapl100 please let us know.
Thanks

T8585 for Telus 3G in canada - HELP PLEASE

I can't seem to find a clear answer...
Okay, so I am a little confused. I am looking at buying a T8585 for use on Telus' new GSM, HSPA network. PDADB says that the LEO 100 or T8585 runs:
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS210
and Telus indicates that their 3G network Runs on 1900/850 MHz frequency bands.
I guess I am coming across as a Noob - I just don't want to drop 600 bucks for something that isn't going to work.
Can somebody who knows more about this then me tell me if the T8585 will work with Telus with both voice and 3G connectivity?
Any help would be VERY MUCH appreciated.
Somebody told me that I need the T9193 (which has better specs) but it seems to me that the stats would make it incompatible.
It will not. You will need a T9193. See the T9193 reference thread for more information. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633404
Do note however, that AFAIK Telus does not have a 'fallback' GSM/EDGE network. It's 3G or nothing.
That being said, I believe there might be some roaming agreements with Rogers. As in, if 3G Telus coverage is not available, you may be able to hop on the Rogers network without issue. I would call them and ask! (and let me know what you find.)

A bit over a month ago I was in your exact situation. I wanted an HTC HD2, I'm on TELUS, and I didn't know what this stuff meant.
"3G" is basically synonymous with "UMTS". "GSM" is a 2G technology, alongside "CDMA".
TELUS uses UMTS (with HSPA+) 850/1900, as well as CDMA. The T8585 Leo supports Quad-Band GSM (but TELUS has no GSM) and UMTS 900/2100.
Obviously therefore the T8585 Leo and TELUS have no frequencies in common, and therefore not only will you not get 3G coverage with the T8585 Leo from TELUS, you won't get any coverage period.
The T9193 Leo however, has a difference UMTS frequency: 850 instead of 900. This allows the T9193 Leo to get 3G coverage from TELUS. As far as I've been able to tell -- in Victoria, BC -- the 3G coverage with just 850mhz is just as good as with both 850/1900, and there are no "holes" in the 850 coverage. According to a TELUS rep I spoke with, all their towers project 850 and 1900, so your coverage at 850 should be complete.

Help with Bands

I've decided to get an HD2, but I do not know if I should get the T8585 or T9193. I understand that they have different bands, but is there any other difference (aussie models)?
I don't know anything about the different bands. Currently I am just using a virgin prepaid sim. I'm not interested in a contract at the moment, so I'll likely continue with that. I am in Cairns, Australia.
Given this information, can anyone help me decide what model would be best for me?
bumpitty bump
If I'm not mistaken,
T9 is the only model that would give you 3g.
I think you are right. That the T9193 is the only one that would get true 3g speeds (on NextG). But given that I am not with Telstra, can I get NextG anyway?
Will the virgin sim work in the phone?
Thanks.
if you stay on virgin, get the T8585. (Yes the sim should work in the phone, assuming it isn't sim locked.)
virgin uses the optus network, which uses the bands
gsm
900/1800 for voice, gprs and edge
and
2100/900 for dual band high speed.
The 8585 has
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900,
UMTS900, UMTS2100
so its a full match
The 9193 however has 850/2100 UMTS so you would only get a single band high speed connection on the 2100.

[Q]Will Focus work in the UK?

Hi all, it is my first thread at xda
I just want to confirm if the samsung focus will work in the UK for 3G. I apologise if this has been brought up already (I found a similar thread, which says it should work for UMTS 1900/2100, but I just want a confirmation)
Omnia 7 Bands: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS1900, UMTS2100
Focus Bands: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100
I wanted the Omnia 7 because of its better look, but I want to put all my songs into my phone so the Focus would be a better buy considering the possibility of getting a 32GB microSD card!
Thanks!
Well that would entirely depend on what carrier you connect. If you connect to a carrier that runs their 3G network on the 850MHz, 1900MHz, or 2100MHz band, you'll be fine.
Also you should note that 32GB cards in the Focus don't seem to be very reliable yet.

UK carriers do not use 850 and 1900 band. Although 2100Mhz 3G band is a common band for EU, if the particular carriers also uses 900 or 1800Mhz band, you maybe in trouble.
Thanks for the replies!!
In that case I will go for Omnia 7then, and get myself a MP3 player meanwhile. It's a shame that omnia 7 only has 8/16GB, even my omnia i900 can support 16+32 GB!!
You will find out that Focus doesn't really work well with majority of the microSD cards out there anyway.

The SGH-i317 is the correct one, no?
I'm trying to avoid the same disappointment up here in Canada on Fido/Rogers. From what I've read, the SGH-i317 supports both AT&T and Fido/Rogers.

Official release for the USA LTE Note2 is 24th October i read earlier today.
Just need to know where we can get an unlocked LTE phone compatible with our LTE bands in Canada.. =(
I'm hoping that I can pick one up at the Samsung store in Vancouver when they're available.
exparanoia: do you agree that the sgh-i317 is the correct model?

GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS800 (B6), UMTS850 (B5), UMTS2100 (B1)
Samsung SCH-N719 Galaxy Note 2 CDMA
CDMA800 (BC0), CDMA1900 (BC14)
So, which one to choose ? LOL! I wish the Canadian Carriers Release the Model #s!!!
Given the fact that the Canadian Carriers - Operate on the 700MHz (Band 17) / 2100MHz (Band 7) frequencies for their LTE Network anyways & 3G is on 850/1900 Mhz (GSM), I think the safe-bet models would be: SGH-i317, SPH-L900 & GT-N7105.
Also, Bell Canada (which shares the LTE Network with Telus) - All of them operate on the bands: 700 Mhz / 2100 Mhz (AWS) for their LTE Networks.
This is not to be confused with AWS Freqency for Wind Mobile, Mobilicity, etc. carriers

According to this, apparently.
What is the difference between the first two if all the bands are identical?

So am I correct when I assume that there will pretty much be two versions of the phone with LTE compatibility, one on GSM and one on CDMA, because the list of the ones above, all of them have the same basebands for GSM, but there are 4 different models.
So which one would I need to get for it to work with ATT, TMOBILE, and any other GSM carrier? besides having it unlocked?
Do you recommend I get a european version which already comes unlocked, or just get a branded one to a carrier and get it unlocked? Please advise.

You need to first decide whether LTE is important to you or not. If it is, you need to wait for the SGH-i317 which supports "North American LTE". If LTE is not important to you, the 7100 will do the trick.
I live in a LTE zone in Canada but opted for the 7100 (no LTE) after reading some battery & performance reports. HSPA+ speeds are just fine for my needs and I spend 90% of my time in WiFi zones anyways. Battery life is on the top of my list.
YMMV

Um, using WiFi drains the battery more than using 3G/4G LTE. WiFi will obviously save you in terms of data usage if you don't have an unlimited plan, but won't save your battery.
I did some tests on my Razr Maxx and WiFi used almost twice the amount of battery by itself than only using 4G.
Save your batteries. Turn WiFi off if you're not using it, and use it as little as possible.

I agree that WiFI isn't free, but I wouldn't have guessed that it was that much less efficient than LTE.
I'd be curious to know how different signal strengths affect both WiFi and LTE. For example: would people on the fringe realize 25% more drain than those in 'hot' zones? I'm also curious if 5GHz performs any better than 2.4GHz w.r.t. power consumption.
My 7100 was shipped today - can't wait to get my hands on it!

Yep. That is what I am doing, but I want to have the ability to switch between T-Mobile and ATT if I do decide to do so. I know if I get the NON LTE, it will be HSPA+ but will not work on ATT 4G or any other GSM carriers 4G, but if I do get the LTE version, will it work with both HSPA+ and 4G LTE?
I am going to be waiting until the 24th, afterall just two more days left. But either way, if I buy the phone flat out so I can get the monthly $50 for everything unlimited, I would want to get the phone unlocked, to have the ability to switch carriers at any time, so question being...as stated above, so that I know which carrier to get from so that it is the LTE version so I can unlock it and use it accordingly.
Not true for me...

I don't know what the difference would be... but my Nexus One uses a lot less battery on WiFi than on my normal 3G network at my house. Maybe signal strength is the issue? I don't know... but I always have WiFi on when I'm home to save on battery life and it works amazing.
