[Q] Replacing myTouch 4gt - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

myTouch 4g is bricked. Bad eMMC problem. Won't boot up. Need to send it back to HTC and get it replaced. Does anyone know what all needs to be sent to htc? Do i need to send sd card, battery and other accessories? or just phone without accessories is fine? Please let me know. It's kinda urgent

just phone. usually you keep the battery door or battery though

okay cool. Actually, I had talked to HTC ppl. they are saying replacing is done through your carrier. Now, need to check with Tmo

If you get a replacement from T-Mobile Customer Service they will send you the replacement first then you send the old one back. It will not come with a battery, battery cover, SD Card, SIM card. You will use your old one.
If you go through HTC warranty you will have to send it in and they will repair or replace it, then send it back.
ok
thanks how long dose it take

help?! mytouch doesnt turn on or charge anymore

what happened...i took out my sd card to switch to my hd2 gingerbread and today i tried to switch back (cause hd2 died) and now the mytouch doesnt turn on or even catch charge
what to do?
yes i was rooted running the most recent iced glacier but ive been running it for weeks no problem...
dis u take it out before, with no issues, or is it the first time u took your sd out while rooted?
mine has done this a couple of times all I had to do was pop battery, wait a few minutes and retry
oh sorry not sd card...i meant sim card i took my sim card out and put it in my hd2 to use it for a day
Lets try some trouble shooting before you call t-mobile for a replacement and Run the risk of getting a **** screen.
Take the battery out and plug it in and then leave it without the battery for a couple minutes aand then plug it back in and then put the battery while its plugged in and hope the charging led comes on.

I had the same problem. Mine was completely stock and had been out of the box for only a few hours. Due to the fact that I had won the phone rather than bought it I couldn't just exchange it and I didn't want to risk a refurbished one or take the 2+ weeks to ship the phone to get it fixed, so I just went to a store.
T-mobile has a policy where they will do an in store warranty exchange for their myTouch line. If they don't have any exchange kits in stock (which they never do ) then they have to give you a new one.
Try that before insurance or warranty.
your battery may have too low power for it to recharge. Use a 9v to give it a jump start for about 1 min and then plug into phone with the usb charger connected. This should startup the phone.
How to recharge via 9volt? Find out + and - terminals on battery and use regular copper shielded speaker wire to jump start it.
If this re-occurs in future, get a replacement battery.
Hope that helps

So you're telling me I don't have to go through the phone and have to wait for them to ship me a new one and send mines in? And I could just go to the store and exchange it?
What if you don't have the box anymore.?

I brought my box in with the phone, but they just took a new phone out of a box and gave it to me. You don't need the box because it's not a return, it's an exchange. As long as they can verify your warranty or you have PHP you shouldn't have a problem.
Oh yeah, they'll only do this for a mytouch. Not any other phone.
Just leave the battery out for an hour then try it all again.
ok i took the phone to tmobile, they said they would give me a battery but they didnt have any supposedly but they had some mytouch 4gs they took apart so idk...im still without my mytouch because i want to try the battery if thats the problem because im rooted i dont want to send it in and have them turn it on and see im running a rom

MyTouch 4G won't boot

I think my MyTouch 4G may be another casualty to the bad emmc chip but wanted to ask you guys just to be sure. This morning I woke up and noticed the alarm didn't go off on my phone, so when I picked it up everything seemed normal. However, when I tried to read a text message it forced closed, then it forced closed the launcher and if I tried to open any other app it forced closed. I tried to hold the power button down to do a reboot, but that didn't work (the pop up screen never came up). So I took the battery out and put it back in, the phone hasn't booted since. I've tried holding volume down and power button, but still nothing. Do you think the phone is bricked? If so, do you think it's the emmc chip issue?
Note: It won't boot when it's hooked up to the charger either, the guy at T-Mobile said there is an issue with the phone. The phone was rooted using GFree method because no other method would work. This phone has the bad EMMC, T-Mobile is sending me a replacement phone.
This sounds exactly like what happened to me. I rooted my phone successfully using the gFree -permaroot method. I then proceed to flash the engineering bootloader and after the battery pull I am no longer able to turn on my phone. I tried booting in HBoot but I get nothing. The LED doesnt light up when I plug the phone into a power source either. If I hold UPVOL+PWR the phone vibrates 4 times quickly and the led light starts flashing, but nothing happens after that. I have called T-Mobile to get a new phone and it is on backorder, so I do have some time before they send me a new one but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to unroot it? Or is my phone bricked? Will T-Mobile void my warranty and make me pay the full price of the new phone? If anyone has any experience with this or can lead me to somewhere where I can fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
mwilliams05: Sorry to threadjack but this is the only thread I saw that was similar to my situation. Let me know what happens with your phone.

Call customer service and LT them overnight you a phone then etyrn the one you have. They will never find out it was rooted.....its dead! Just let them know it wouldn't boot up all of a sudden. The emmc chips are going out alot. I was lucky enough to get a good one and sold my phone 3 weeks ago.
Yeah the phones on backorder..i wonder why lol. This Mytouch that just broke on me was a replacement from Asurion, it was most likely a refurb or something. But thanks, appreciate the help!

I received my replacement and it has the bad emmc too. I don't think tmobile will know the phone was rooted from what ive heard from others.

The SAME thing happened to me! I also used the gfree method. I just want to know do you have to unroot your phone before you can send it back for a replacement because can't they tell you bricked it trying to root by your S=OFF?

If the phone wont boot up, I don't think they will be able to tell you rooted it. When I spoke with a Tmobile customer service rep he said the extended warranty (which I purchased for an extra $4/mo) covers the phone as long as it's not water damaged or physically damaged, which I felt meant if the phone is bricked, it's covered under warranty. That was one of the reasons I rooted knowing I had the bad emmc chip.

They can still tell if it's rooted. ClockworkMod recovery is still there, and if the phone has the engineering bootloader, that will also be a dead giveaway. The thing is, I don't think any of that matters. My friend has been a VZW customer service manager for years and swears that they don't care if it's rooted. He says they rarely actually try to boot a phone that's been returned, and if they do, being rooted is a non-issue. I know TMO could have a different policy, but since it's TMO known for their customer service, not VZW, I would assume they'd be even more lenient about returns.

How do they know if clockwork mod recovery is on the phone if it wont turn on? The phone I just sent back wouldn't power on at all. Is there another way for them to find out it's been rooted if the phone won't turn on (I.e. nothing is displayed on the screen) ?

i can back this story up
my phone just took a **** on me a couple days ago with cache errors due to eMMC being the bad one...i worked for 3 hours to unroot the damn thing cause adb or my phone was being a complete asshole...after i unrooted the phone i went to the local tmo store and talked to the dudes up there and they pretty much said...tmo doesnt care if they get rooted phones cause they all get sent back to HTC or Samsung to get refurbed...he said water damage or physical damage is a different story

You didn't say it doesn't turn on. You said "it doesn't boot." Usually when people complain about a phone not booting, it still physically turns on, but ends up going to recovery or the bootloader, or hangs at the myTouch screen. If it won't turn on at all, they can't tell if it's rooted, but my guess is they can get it to turn on even if you can't. However, as the posts above explain, it doesn't really matter because they don't care whether it's rooted or not.
Rooting = voiding warranty is a myth?
So is it safe to assume when you root your phone, it doesn't actually void your warranty because the phone doesn't have physical or water damage, right?

Been a nice yeah with you guys and the MT3gS

So i called t-mobile today for a warranty return on my phone, been meaning to for a while the slide out part was a little loose. the guy on the phone said i am sorry sir, but the MT3gS is no longer available... but we will send you a MyTouch 4g Slide...... The phone i was going to try to buy in the next few months. was going to have to work around and eat roman to buy the thing. so this is my good buy. i have learned alot for alot of people on this forum, i was even going to donate my old phone to someone when i got my new one, but since i will have to return this one to get it, i will not be able to do that.
be cool,
kat bastard
Sounds like it's gonna be an awesome upgrade for you man, good for you.
Out of curiousity is it from t-mobile or asurion? How much are you paying out of pocket?

Best of luck to you with your 4g Slide! I've been thinking about doing the same thing. my power button is getting recessed and making my nervous for future problems. Same question as the above post. Is T-Mobile replacing it or is it through asurion? Are they charging you anything (Shipping?)? Also; I've never had to warranty a phone before. Do they require you send it back prior to getting your new phone sent?
myTouch 4g Slide is the best!
its t-mobile, the upgrade is 100% free due to the warranty replacement. don't have to pay for shipping or anything. man replace your phone while you can! if you do it now you might get the same deal i did.
Hey man, thanks a lot! Called them and got the free upgrade replacement to a mt4gs since mine was under warranty
Thanks for the heads up!
So my phone randomly turns off, would I call technical support from tmo and ask for a replacement and I should be able to get the mt4gs?

Do you pay the ~$5 for premium handset protection or whatever?
If so, then yes.. call and tell them it locks up and reboots constantly. They will run you through their script (have you done a factory reset, let's try it for a day without the sd card, are there apps that you downloaded that make it happen, etc). Don't lie, but I imagine you've already done these things while trying to get the random reboots to stop. Once you get them to qualify you for a replacement, they will give you a MT4GS as they are out of the MT3GS at the moment or something.
NOTE: There is no need to extend your contract to get the new phone.
They sent me what appeared to be a brand new MT4GS, but I am sending it back due to the "K" button on the keyboard not working.. Hoping the replacement is fixed all-around.
Good luck!
I just called them for my issue. I have light coming out from the sides of the screen in addition to the power button... they wanted me to pay $5 for processing and told me they would replace with a 3G slide... I wonder if the store will be able to warranty it. I'm going to try that tomorrow. Will post back how that goes.
called the store this morning and they can't do a swap. must be done through customer service... tried them again to get someone else... It seems they have more 3g slides. anyone have any hints?

[Q] easily detected root?

I'm getting my warranty replacemnt mt4g today. And i'm getting a little worried. So i have some questions
1. if the phone cant turn on, can they still find out its s-off or rooted? how easily?
2.sinse the mt4g is discontinued, do they try to replace the broken hardware or messed up software and sell it refurbished? or do they just throw it away.
3. If they figure out it was rooted AFTER i get the replacement and ship the bricked one to them, what would they do? would i have to send the new one back? would i have to pay the price for the new one? would they do nothing?
4. how good are t-mobile's technical people at finding out if your rooted compared to other carriers?
thnx

Do you mean the phone doesnt power up at all? even to splash screen? If they cant boot it up then they wouldnt even bother checking if it was rooted because its easier and cheaper not to worry about it. If they can get into hboot then they can see
