Got this today and found it a great phone until it just randomly started crashing.
At the time I hadn't rooted it or anything, I was just setting things up like my email and adding contacts when all of a sudden (on google account) the phone just froze and I had to pull the battery out to restart it.
At first I chalked it up to it warming up so I turned down the brightness and whatever was using power excessively.
Now it pretty much restarts anytime I use the keyboard, sometimes it even restarts within a minute of me switching it back on.
I've now reset it to factory settings and even rooted it to try get to the bottom of the problem but I am not even getting a chance to look.
At this rate I am going unroot it and then go back to Carphone Warehouse and just give the phone back in and ask for a refund, a real pity cause I did a search through google and these forums and found no reports of anything similar.
Some information from the About Section:
Model Number: GT-I9100
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXKDH
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKDD
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance to anyone who can shed any light on this issue.
There must be something wrong with your phone. Ask for an exchange? I think CPW doesn't offer refund policy, that's what they told me.
Maybe reset device and try to use no Google account and do some intensive stuff(to pass the Google account & stuff like that, when you're on Android-logo screen with "Change language" click once at the 4 corners) as that is the only thing I can see software-wise.
Otherwise, what temperature is it where you live?
I was playing a game on my sgs2 before and it got very warm as in hot around camera area on back
if you your in UK 28 days faulty return for full refund or exchange
I just tried restoring to factory settings and did as EleCtrOx666 suggested. It did nothing, in fact it got stuck and rebooted as I was clicking through setup, I think something is wrong with the touch screen itself from my symptoms.
Temperature around here is maximum 20degrees centigrade, I am in England after all.
I even tried using the google search on the front screen and that got stuck within 3letters.
Tomorrow I will be heading back to the CPW I bought it from to get a refund or replacement at the very least. I hope they do not come up with the "we'll send it to be fixed" resolution.
This is ridiculous, I've been looking forward to getting this phone and yet I end up with the only duff one I've heard of
Thank you everyone
Dont take any poop of them
You want a new 1 or a full refund
Give them the sales of goods act "fit for the purpose" ....always works even if its not relevant
I agree, exchange or refund, none of that sending off for repair stuff.
CPW told me they'll not be accepting a refund, only exchange. Same goes to P4u.

Thing that bothers me is, if they don't have one in stock I don't want to be waiting around for a couple of weeks before I get a phone. As said I've been looking forward to this phone a while but I am not gonna wait around forever.

Dude we are in the UK, the law is on your side despite what they may want to say to you in the store. Just stick to your gun if you want a refund: http://whatconsumer.co.uk/do-shops-have-to-give-me-my-money-back/
Even when there is a notice in the shop stated that they've stop their refund policy?
What is the exact date of refund or exchange policy? Might want to exchange mine if my battery life still bad.

Right some good news, went into CPW today and they basically just swapped my phone over no questions asked. This one is noticeably faster and hasn't hung up on me whatsoever, fingers crossed I won't have to worry again.
Rather funny as the guy said how is it possible, hadn't had any back in. Then he switches it on only for it to hang on the startup screen and reboot.
Thank you everyone for the advice, sorry my first post had to be a rather ****ty one but I shall be hanging around and absorbing any information I can
Great stuff bro. Hope this one isn't a lemon and you enjoy the device. No go test it to make sure it works properly.
BTW, what firmware version does it have out of the box?
Is everyone box seal been opened before when you first bought it?
Nope, box was seal with a black security strip.

My seal was broken instore by shop assistant even tho I told her twice not to do it...only 1 left or else I would have swapped it.
P.s. Glad to hear you got it all sorted Protok.
My box was opened too by shop assistant. Not in front of me but when he bring the box out i saw it was already open so i ask him did he have another sealed box, he say all the box were open to check whether the phone was inside. Hmm.. mine from CPW
@intratech - where did u get yours?

it's been 24 hours since i used my evo, i'm still having a hard time shaking the feeling. yesterday on my way back from lunch to the office i parked in front to drop some things off, since i had a few things on my front pockets i didn't want to put my phone there, so i figure i'll put it on my back pocket for now. after dropping off the things, i jump back in my truck and i heard a funny sound, all i could do is look up and sigh hoping everything was ok, i pulled out my phone and everything seem fine at the time. when i got back inside my office i woke up my phone and that is when i discover my lcd was crushed and nothing was really visible. since is rooted im not sure if bb's black tie will still cover accidental, cuz im sure as soon as they fire it up they'll know and i'm afraid it will end up been rejected. before i send it off they asked if that was the only thing that was wrong i said yes, he goes on to tell me that will be the only thing they'll be doing and if there is another issue they will have to send it in again. i sure hope that's the only thing they do. if they rejected i found a few places where i can get it for $74.00 or so and i'll replaced my self. hope this goes quick, having to go back to my pre doesn't cease the feeling

you still wouldn't be able to replace that under warranty since it's physical damage. The only way you would get it replaced is through insurance, and insurance doesn't give a **** about rooted or non rooted.

unless they replace the screen, then they won't be able to figure it out. It would require taking it apart even more and checking gpu and ****. And i'm pretty sure they won't take it apart in the store. You'll most likely be fine, unless it gets flagged at their repair center or w/e.

My evo sits in my back pocket all day, every day, I've never had an issue. You must've just sat on it weirdly.
...or you could have just taken a hammer to it until there was not way for them to prove it was rooted. a broken phone is a broken phone.

what shows broken is the lcd passed the touch screen. I jump inside my truck so i guess that cracked it. when is asleep you can't tell there is anything wrong!
Thanks for the mounds of logic.
They cant tell the phone is rooted unless they plugged it in with usb and ran a view commands. Which is extremely rare for anyone to even do and they would just be doing it to be a **** if they did. I HIGHLY doubt they would even try to find out if you rooted it when you accidentally broke the screen. Its not like it was a problem like bluetooth or wifi not working (then rooting it could be the root of the problem). I personally wouldnt worry about it at all.
If it was Sprint you would just pay $100 and they send you a new one, sprint never sees it and all is well. I dont how best buy works.
You are correct there is no replacement cost. I work there as a second job. If it can be repaired they will send it off. If not they replace it with a new one. It is a great plan. The other issue I have no idea how they will handle it but I would not fret over it I believe you will be fine.

Best buy doesn't charge $150 for repair or replacement. They do however change a $150 deposit on loaner phones while yours has been sent out for repair. You get a refund when you return the loaner.

I keep my EVO in my back pocket also, and I've only come close to doing this once. But since I keep it there out of habit, its become second nature to take it out or move it to a front pocket whenever I sit down. I don't even think about it.
I can defiantly see how this could happen to someone who doesn't normally keep it there.
Best of luck op. I'm thinking black tie should cover you ok.

hey everyone
today, 2 weeks after I purchased my Galaxy S 2, suddenly I saw a stain
I went to the lab of the store i bought the device from
they claim it's some kind of liquid which got into the screen from the speaker above the screen.
of course they can't open the screen and check what kind of material is it because it will ruin the screen.
but there is no way a liquid came in touch with my device. I watch it very carefully
last night I only played some angry birds and everything was fine
and this morning (after charging it at night while turned off) this stain showed up
does anyone familiar with the problem?
got any clue what may cause it
here are some pictures of it:

if anyone can help I'll very appreciate it. thanks
I have never seen anything like this (embedding your first two picture)
Is it possible the case you have is too tight?
The discoloration is on the inside of the screen?

the case fits fine. I bought the device with a friend and he have the same case without any strange signs on his screen
I tried to remove the screen stamp - it's not that
the touch works in the defected area
and there is no hearing problem from the ear speaker
if it is liquid, considering the way it speard
it probably happened in my pants pocket judging by the angle
but it doesnt make any sense
at the store's lab they told me if they seperate the led screen and the touch screen to check what is this stain, they can't assemble it back.
but since they dont give me warranty on the screen i'll have to pay them for new screen anyway.
any chance I can send it to samsung so they'll do the check and if it's their fault the replace will be for free?
I thought maybe some part melted into the screen, but they said every part was in it's place

That's your best bet. If something happened during assembly they'd cover the cost. If they find it's not a defect you'll probably have to pay. But I'd imagine you're still better off having it repaired by Samsung directly. Someone had their screen replaced due to breakage and it was 300 GBP just to give you some sort of reference.
I have seen moisture cause this (it does not take much) and it will normally dry/clear up albeit very slowly.
the stain keeps growing
and i'm sure i didn't add any water/moisture to it in the last 24hrs
it's so strange...
I'm having trouble contacting the local samsung here
hopefully they won't send me to the store I bought the device from
I saw a display replacement on ebay which cost 85 GBP (will loose the warranty of the other parts, not to mention ruin the whole device)
if I'll do it at the store it'll cost 220GBP
it's a hugh bet to send it to samsung. it can cost 300 GBP not including delivery
any suggestion which path should I take?
it almost sounds like the digitizer/screen sandwich is coming apart?
You are out of the store return window to just return for exchange? If there was a return period (not some shady store with missing return policies), just demand a refund, tell them it is not from water. Demand to speak with the manager.
Does your unit carry warranty from Samsung? I think the way this one works, you send it in, they evaluate it, if they admit it is their problem they will fix for free. If they say "it is water damager, user error" they will offer to fix for a fee, and you can still refuse and pay for the return sipping of your phone. So I believe most you will be out is shipping both ways.
Swapping the screen yourself may require some good skills - do you have them?
no returning after turning on a device
warranty on hardware only except screen&touch (had to sign on it when bought the device)
I dont think I have the law at my side
I guess I can only count on the manufacturer
no store here gives warranty on screen&touch
and this store was the only one which let you change the ROM without loosing warranty on hardware
the device also comes with their custom ROM and no recovery mode (so no one will steal their ROM)
Is it cancelling my warranty with samsung itself?
update:
here is a fresh picture
h++p://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/img20110712wa0000.jpg/
you can see it grows
and this time i used a whole white screen and found something new
you can notice there is a burn of the status bar in the corner
That is definitely a "liquid" stain. Aim next time bud. That is all

Completely off topic, but we should be more careful about mixing words like "yellow" and "stain" in the same sentence...
also off topic but if its yellow, I'd speak to your gp bud

Wow,
Was it charging? or something extreme running?
Did you change the thermal throttling?
I've never had this problem my phone can get hot, but I never thought it was close to exploding.
No foul play here , normally if I was reading a post like this I would assume the same thing but it is a legit situation. The phone was completely stock so there were no changes to the thermal throttling or anything like that. The phone was not charging. The phone still works as well which I was surprised to see. I have pictures but I'm not sure if I should post them until I get a resolution with google.

Pictures or it didn't happen.
Edit...saw the pictures. How long did you charge your battery the night before ? I've had this happen to older phones where the battery started bulging due to prolonged overcharging with ****ty USB chargers. These phones were plastic so the back didn't break but it protruded.
Like you said, the phones I had were still functional as well. The only symptom is that the battery lost a drastic amount of total capacity and would die fairly quickly.
whoa. how old is it?
Purchased Feb 2013... I charged it like I do every night, over night. Every phone I have ever owned I charged over night. We all know these phones don't last two days unless you barely use them.

Hello XXXXXX,
Thank you for contacting Google in regards to your Nexus 4. I understand from personal experience that when something happens to your device it can be frustrating. However, rest assured I'm doing everything in my capability to help get this issue resolved.
After consulting your case to our specialist team they have informed me that unfortunately any type of cracked screen is not covered under our warranty.
Your best option would be to get in direct contact with LG. You can reach them at 1(800) 793-8896 to see what options they may have available for you.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to respond directly to this email and I would be more than happy to assist you.

I'm no expert, but I used to play with RC toys and the swelling happens to Lipo battery..
The swelling are could be cause by
-over charging/discharging the battery.
-charging it the wrong way.
-physical damage to the cell.
In this case, I think is a manufacturer defect of the battery.
I remember we use to charge RC Lipo batteries in a special bag incase the battery explode/catch on fire during charging.
Maybe some who knows more about these lipo can chime in !

First of all I'm from the UK
So I have had my phone since January 21st and its been fine.
Past few days its been getting really, really HOT! I know some people exaggerate about over heating problems but I couldn't even hold the phone. I was scared that it was going to explode. It took about 15 minutes to cool down once i had turned it off and it has happened about 4 times in the past two days.
I have looked on Googles return/ replacement policies but i'm a little confused. I don't know if its changed within the last day but i looked it up on my phone and it said they have a 24/7 help line that i can call. I have now looked it up on my desktop and the options have changed and it tells me i have to go through LG.
Does anyone have that number? I cant seem to find it anywhere.
Is there a chance i can get a brand new replacement from Google or LG? or would it just be a repair?
Thank you.

Should I just lie and say iv already done it when it first happened and it continued to over heat a couple more times or should i just wait it out a few days do what they say and contact them then?

That's your call. Only you know how your device has been acting :/ (First hand I mean)
Just got my new one. Its a 304k. Screen is a little dimmer which I don't care about.. But the gyroscope isn't working within apps. Like the camera, chrome, messaging etc.
I've downloaded an actual gyroscope and that works. Also factory reset the phone still the same.
Just sent Google an email about it.. Waiting for reply.
Why me ?
Edit... I fixed it by putting my sim card in lol.
So I got my phone today and low and behold I have some serious (at least to me) blemishes and scratches on the back. Some pics below. I know they may not seem too bad but come on, this is a brand new phone, and unexceptable if you ask me. So I actually go to my nearby ATT store to see if they have stock already so they can swap it out and they don't have any yet. You could see it in the eyes of the workers that they hadn't seen one yet. Borderline oogling over it.
Anyways, they say call ATT and they'll send me another. I call and low and behold they CAN send me a replacement (not overnight mind you, I'd have to pay for that), but as I had to remind them, there is a backorder for it so they couldn't tell me when I'd get it. All this time I wouldn't be able to activate the phone. I say screw it, I'll keep it but you gotta give me something here. All they can do open a customer credit report and see if it goes through. Suffice it to say.....I'm pissed.

Yeah this is a total case of WTF. Must have happened in the flashing process when they added all their carrier crap.
Wow. Was it shipped in bag full of rocks?
Thats how mine is from GPlay! Not as bad as yours but the same type of marks.... Seems like it was slid around and there was a bunch of dust/debris in the box on the phone.. I called them up right after I saw and they were gonna set me up with a new replacement but there is a problem with there system with that apparently...:roll eyes: So I have to wait for them to fix that then get in contact with me to set up the replacement... Im using this one in a case in the mean time but it definitely shouldn't fly to get one that looks this way!
Looks like someone was skate boarding on it before shipping. Lol I would return it. There is no fu#king way I pay over $700 for a screwed up phone.
Probably happened while they were tattooing that sweetass globe on the bottom. Well worth the sacrifice, IMO.

Hahaha this comment had me rollin as well. Sorry about your phone OP. Hopefully they give you some type of credit or something.
That valiant phone fought tooth and nail and tried to resist being tramp stamped. In the end the handset torturers won

How is that AT&T's fault? Lol.
"A Lenovo company..."
I would try blast them Motorola and ATT on social media. No way you fork over that much cash money for A defectove unit. I also suggest you QC the camera carefully. It may have got the lense.
Motorola QC issue.
I was at my tmobile store when they unboxed their demo unit and it had the same nonsense. We considered that maybe they just purposely sent the ****ty ones to stores for demo purposes. Hope this is not a widespread issue
That's what you get for purchasing a phone from the devil.

They would have touched it last when flashing their splash screenand doing the logo on the back. But a previous commenter said his gplay device was the same. I would look at how the phone fits in the retail packaging. Does it have room to move around at all, is what i would be looking at.

I think it has some room to move because there doesn't seem to be anything keeping it in place or anything protective it has to sit on. Its just sitting on indent of the phone with the documentation. I think it happened during shipping possibly especially if it was man handled it could bounce around and scuff up but idk? i don't see how sliding on cardboard could cause marks like that.
Im also still waiting on Gplay to reply and fix there system to get me a new replacement...
Did you have any issues getting AT&T to initiate the return? This is ridiculous, mine has this too.

AT&T wouldn't have done it themselves, just semantically speaking.
They would have made a deal with the OEM (Motorola) to make the modifications on their behalf before packaging.
Not defending AT&T or anything, of course.
