it's been 24 hours since i used my evo, i'm still having a hard time shaking the feeling. yesterday on my way back from lunch to the office i parked in front to drop some things off, since i had a few things on my front pockets i didn't want to put my phone there, so i figure i'll put it on my back pocket for now. after dropping off the things, i jump back in my truck and i heard a funny sound, all i could do is look up and sigh hoping everything was ok, i pulled out my phone and everything seem fine at the time. when i got back inside my office i woke up my phone and that is when i discover my lcd was crushed and nothing was really visible. since is rooted im not sure if bb's black tie will still cover accidental, cuz im sure as soon as they fire it up they'll know and i'm afraid it will end up been rejected. before i send it off they asked if that was the only thing that was wrong i said yes, he goes on to tell me that will be the only thing they'll be doing and if there is another issue they will have to send it in again. i sure hope that's the only thing they do. if they rejected i found a few places where i can get it for $74.00 or so and i'll replaced my self. hope this goes quick, having to go back to my pre doesn't cease the feeling

but im shock @ people doing stuff like this to there EVO's mines clips to my side unless im @ home then its on my desk .
you still wouldn't be able to replace that under warranty since it's physical damage. The only way you would get it replaced is through insurance, and insurance doesn't give a **** about rooted or non rooted.

unless they replace the screen, then they won't be able to figure it out. It would require taking it apart even more and checking gpu and ****. And i'm pretty sure they won't take it apart in the store. You'll most likely be fine, unless it gets flagged at their repair center or w/e.

screen is fine? it looks cracked to me
My evo sits in my back pocket all day, every day, I've never had an issue. You must've just sat on it weirdly.
...or you could have just taken a hammer to it until there was not way for them to prove it was rooted. a broken phone is a broken phone.

what shows broken is the lcd passed the touch screen. I jump inside my truck so i guess that cracked it. when is asleep you can't tell there is anything wrong!
Thanks for the mounds of logic.
They cant tell the phone is rooted unless they plugged it in with usb and ran a view commands. Which is extremely rare for anyone to even do and they would just be doing it to be a **** if they did. I HIGHLY doubt they would even try to find out if you rooted it when you accidentally broke the screen. Its not like it was a problem like bluetooth or wifi not working (then rooting it could be the root of the problem). I personally wouldnt worry about it at all.
If it was Sprint you would just pay $100 and they send you a new one, sprint never sees it and all is well. I dont how best buy works.
You are correct there is no replacement cost. I work there as a second job. If it can be repaired they will send it off. If not they replace it with a new one. It is a great plan. The other issue I have no idea how they will handle it but I would not fret over it I believe you will be fine.

Best buy doesn't charge $150 for repair or replacement. They do however change a $150 deposit on loaner phones while yours has been sent out for repair. You get a refund when you return the loaner.

I keep my EVO in my back pocket also, and I've only come close to doing this once. But since I keep it there out of habit, its become second nature to take it out or move it to a front pocket whenever I sit down. I don't even think about it.
I can defiantly see how this could happen to someone who doesn't normally keep it there.
Best of luck op. I'm thinking black tie should cover you ok.

Got out of the car today when I pulled up the gym and had my Nexus One on my lap.
It fell.
The screen broke.
I'm sad.
Luckilly TMo insurance covers it through Asurion and the deductible is only $130.
If my stupid car dock had arrived on time today this would have never happened! LOL
That is my story =P

That's good you had the insurance. Do you get a new Nexus One or a used N1 or a check?
Can't see the pics either. Sad story, at least you have it covered.
about broken nexous oen
the funny thing is t mobile told me i could not get my n1
insured because i bought it from google and not in a tmobile store
they F*** lies Every time i talk to tmobile its a different story they are worthless
Silly question: did you have a screen protector on it or no? I'm guessing no since the screen broke, and any decent screen protector actually absorbs shock impacts and prevent a LOT of would-be cracks...
That damn on the lap thing gets a lot of peoples phones when they get out of the car...
My wife's dropped her tp2 like 5 times that way.. luckily.no broken screen...
I always check lap for this reason....
It's only the screen that broke?
If yes you can ask HTC to replace it with a brand new one(screen) for 100$ in case warranty didn't pay!
It's better than pay 600$ again
Was it in the slip in case that the phone comes with?
I always keep it in that and I have the feeling that would give it some good protection too. I bought a BSE (bestskinsever) full body protector, and I couldn't get used to it (not to mention it didn't slide out of the slip in case easily making it difficult to answer a call quickly) but I will use the screen protector.

When did you get yours, because I got mine at launch and they told me that same thing. However I kept checking back with T-Mobile, HTC, and Assurion everyday, until it was offered. I mean Assurion has Google as a supported manufacturer on their website specifically for the N1.
Update:
Asurion was actually PLEASANT to work with! They did ask some odd questions to "verify" that I wasn't trying to get a cheap/free phone from someone else's plan. I finished my claim last night at 6:30pm PST and my phone landed in Seattle from KY at 3:30AM today and left Redmond shipping center this morning at 6:45AM! Yay!
I'm still not going to get a screen protector or a case. I got my car dock so a case will make it not fit and slipping it on and off is not fun. Screen protectors have never sat well with me. I don't like the texture it adds. I have sweaty fingers/hands so most screen protectors are no bueno for me. I hadn't had a single drop since I got the phone in January so I don't think I'll have another one (I get drunk EVERY weekend too) plus i have the car dock now so no more lap drops!
Yeah I thought Asurion would be a pain in the ass but they were easy to work with (no connection to them lol). $130 deductible is very affordable.
sad story bro. too many times my phone has fallen due to getting out the car (off my lap/slips outta pocket) and everytime your heart hits the ground with it. after i got my n1 i basically trained myself to always have it in my hand before i open the car door.

Here is a picture of how the phone looks.
What did you do? Drop it off a sky scraper? Jesus!
If it still turns on, and it really is only the screen, glass and digitizer, I'd say it's worth it to replace. How you'll go about doing that though is another story.
Good luck either way.
Hahaha the story. Well you see my car driver's seat does not stay down, so every time I get off the seat the seat elevates a little. I had my phone on my jacket and it came out of the jacket's pocket, and it went down the side of the seat. Without realizing that the phone had fallen down I sat down and bye bye screens.
There not much to say right.
Replacement screen and digitizer are cheap ... Get the replacement and bring that nexus back to its glory days
The joy that comes from completing a DYI job is like none other
Now I have decided to fix it. Does anybody know a reliable place to buy the digitizer and the screen? I saw some on Amazon and Ebay and even DealExtreme but where should I buy from?
ebay is probably your best bet asside from finding a broken phone that *hopefully* has the parts you need to swap to fix it.
also AFAIK the only way to get an AMOLED replacement is from a broken doner phone as all the replacements are LCD's used in the currently made Nexus one's
i've also never got a clear answer on if the LCD's work plug and play with AMOLED models i assume they do as they are selling them everywhere for replacements and i have not seen any complaints but you might want to check into that more before you buy one.
otherwise i will say having half way took apart 1 broken N1 its not very hard to do but you need the right tools and you need to read on how to do it because some parts are tricky and take your time and be very careful with ribbon cables as there are many of them and they are easy to damage or tear

I know the N1 is one of the best phones out there. One thing for sure is that no one has seen the final version of the N2. I don't think Google has announced the phone yet. (Correct me if I'm wrong) Now if there is an N2 in development then I want it. It's going to be Google's and I don't doubt they will go for the best hardware, just as they did with the N1.
I think you should fix the n1. I had one and loved it. I have the mytouch 4g now and still miss my n1 sometimes. If you decide you don't want to fix it let me know I'll buy it from you the way it is.

Thanks for the info. This looks like the most reliable soruce since they are going to put in a genuine screen in there. Will give them a call. Thanks
Send the phone in to HTC
Send it to HTC for repair since it has to still be under warranty and if you have rooted it they won't be able to find out until after repairing it. Fixing it yourself would be the next best thing if you feel confident with a torx screwdriver.

I have sent my phone in twice for hardware problems (they didn't fix it the first time). Both times it went in rooted (1st time with bootloader unlocked) and both times it has been returned fully stock (with bootloader locked).
They did not give me any hassles for the rooting.
Well I just sended the phone today. Hopefully everything goes fine.
Well I send the phone on thanksgiving day. I know no service. So the phone arrived to them on monday after thanksgiving. They fixed it on Tuesday, send it on wednesday, and received it on thursday.
My impressions...
+Payed 115 dls.
+they fixed the screens power button and replaced the trackball
+They also replaced the aluminum frame. (look at the picture it was all scraped)
only thing I saw as soon as I turned it on is the screen being kinda pinkish but it went away as i used it or my eyes got used to it. One of two.
I don't regret sending the phone to them. Could have not done a better move.
My phone has developed a thin pink line running down the screen.
I have been on holiday on an island with no phone reception for a week so I didn't take the phone, so it's been at home without being touched.
Then I get back today, play around with it for only a few hours then this happens! It seemed to come on after a reboot.
At first I thought it was because I was playing with build.prop, but after restoring a backup it was still there. It's also there on the splash screen and in recovery, AND it's in the same position when I rotate my phone, so I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue.
The point of the island story is because I was wondering if a rapid change in temperature could have something to do with it? The phone has been very cold for the week of no usage, but has been getting hot today obviously after charging and playing with it
Does anyone know what could have caused it?
And is there any way to fix it? Or should I just start looking at prices for the galaxy nexus...

I am afraid you might have to send it to hTC for LCD repair.
nevermind, wrong section
Yup. This will have to go to HTC repairs.
I see you're rooted and have BlackIce ROM installed. I'd suggest flashing Stock RUU before sending it to them. (Warranty issues)
Cause of the problem : Maybe the temperature difference, although such problems are very hard to pinpoint. Even a minor speck or particle on the circuit board can wreck havoc at times.. I've had a PC monitor gone bad due to an ant crawling inside the system. :\

Why even bother with repairing it yourself.
1. Why give yourself the hassle?
2. Why go to that expense?
All HTC phones have a 2 yr warranty get a stock rom on it, get it s on'd and get it sent back.
I've sent a few phones back to HTC and one of them was a HD2 with the same issue and the turn around and service was top notch

I'm afraid that my phone only had a 1 year warranty, and this happened in the 13th month of it's life I had a long discussion with HTC about their responsibility to make sure their hardware survives for a reasonable length of time, and could they extend the warranty, but they weren't interested. So I took it to a 3rd party repair place and they fixed it up for me for $110. It's worth it in the end, the phone will sell for more than that when I upgrade to my next phone.
Thanks for all of the replies everyone!

Thank you. Very much appreciated I will order one now.
Hey guys,
So I have my nexus 4, waiting for my (quite expensive) case and screenprotector to arrive - and of course I drop the phone. It lands screen first on ground (the back has the originial protector still on it, but it just has to be the front it lands on..). Luckily nothing is cracked, but it has hairline scratches.. On older phone I wouldn't even care, but I am sure you guys can sympathize how much it hurts on a 13 day device. I have a few questions:
- Any experience with returning it to google? It is within 15 days of purchase, might be worth simply returning it and then buying a new one. Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen (unless you look at it under light, you can't even see the scratches..)
- Any experience with getting the screen replaced - either via official repair center or manually? I have replaced screens before myself, but always on an older phone. On this new device I am kinda afraid to do it.
- Any other ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks, hopefully somebody has some experience with this kind of things! (and hopefully nobody has this experience ever again )
When your screen protector arrives, just put it on. My experience is that the screen protector will make the scratches mostly invisible.

Then why is it a big deal? You really have no right to return it since you dropped it and now it has tiny scratches. Not trying to be an ass or anything but that is petty on your part. Put a screen protector on and you won't see them anymore.

Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like a piece of lint under a protector. If that is not a protector then it is under the glass.

You have no right to return an item YOU damaged. A company can refuse a return of an item if the owner caused the damage. That's no different then me buying the phone and shattering the screen then saying oh well its only been two days so full refund please.

I think that you should deal with it, get the screen replaced if you don't like it with scratches. The fact that people say return it within 15 days after you damage it says that they are cheap and hold no responsibility for their actions. Man up. If you damage it, pay and get it fixed or own it with scratches on it - if it were that important to you, you wouldn't have let it get scratched up in the first place.

So I know we have had disagreements in the past, but this is one of the more naive things I have ever seen. He has a right to request a full refund within 15 days for damage that HE caused? That's absurd. I dare you to buy any ~$350 device from Best Buy, damage it, and then demand a refund because you are in the refund period. Please let me know how that works for you.

Google requires a 10% (15%?) restocking fee on items returned within 15 days. Even if you return it, you will have to pay 30 to 35 dollars.

To everybody talking (joshnichols189, VoiD_Dweller, and others) how I shouldn't return it:
The reason I said "Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen" is not meaning "i hope google won't notice muhahahhaha", it means - maybe google will not ask for the restocking because the scratches are small and google very nice. The word "generous" is there for a reason. I didn't say "blind" or "stupid" or "unlucky"...
I have a full right to return the item. If it is damaged, and it is, google has a full right to charge me for the damages. If I decide to return the phone, I will be ready to pay for my fault of dropping the phone (literally, haha). I am simply hoping google won't do that - not because they won't notice, but because they will be nice enough.
To others - thanks for the advice. Does anybody have experience with changing the screen? One option is to use this current screen as a screen protector - I already scratched it, might as well enjoy it, and if it gets too scratched I would just buy a new screen (these guys are not too expensive, do you guys know if that screen is genuine LG?)

Naive? No. Within 15 days of purchase as stated by Google you can return the phone for whatever reason you want. You people here are not the judge, jury and executioner. Google will obviously examine the phone when it is returned, and if they feel it is not in satisfactory condition, they will not issue a refund. That is up to Google to decide. And there are many companies, including credit card companies that will refund for a given amount of time for accidental damage caused by the purchaser.
So I got my phone today and low and behold I have some serious (at least to me) blemishes and scratches on the back. Some pics below. I know they may not seem too bad but come on, this is a brand new phone, and unexceptable if you ask me. So I actually go to my nearby ATT store to see if they have stock already so they can swap it out and they don't have any yet. You could see it in the eyes of the workers that they hadn't seen one yet. Borderline oogling over it.
Anyways, they say call ATT and they'll send me another. I call and low and behold they CAN send me a replacement (not overnight mind you, I'd have to pay for that), but as I had to remind them, there is a backorder for it so they couldn't tell me when I'd get it. All this time I wouldn't be able to activate the phone. I say screw it, I'll keep it but you gotta give me something here. All they can do open a customer credit report and see if it goes through. Suffice it to say.....I'm pissed.

Yeah this is a total case of WTF. Must have happened in the flashing process when they added all their carrier crap.
Wow. Was it shipped in bag full of rocks?
Thats how mine is from GPlay! Not as bad as yours but the same type of marks.... Seems like it was slid around and there was a bunch of dust/debris in the box on the phone.. I called them up right after I saw and they were gonna set me up with a new replacement but there is a problem with there system with that apparently...:roll eyes: So I have to wait for them to fix that then get in contact with me to set up the replacement... Im using this one in a case in the mean time but it definitely shouldn't fly to get one that looks this way!
Looks like someone was skate boarding on it before shipping. Lol I would return it. There is no fu#king way I pay over $700 for a screwed up phone.
Probably happened while they were tattooing that sweetass globe on the bottom. Well worth the sacrifice, IMO.

Hahaha this comment had me rollin as well. Sorry about your phone OP. Hopefully they give you some type of credit or something.
That valiant phone fought tooth and nail and tried to resist being tramp stamped. In the end the handset torturers won

How is that AT&T's fault? Lol.
"A Lenovo company..."
I would try blast them Motorola and ATT on social media. No way you fork over that much cash money for A defectove unit. I also suggest you QC the camera carefully. It may have got the lense.
Motorola QC issue.
I was at my tmobile store when they unboxed their demo unit and it had the same nonsense. We considered that maybe they just purposely sent the ****ty ones to stores for demo purposes. Hope this is not a widespread issue
That's what you get for purchasing a phone from the devil.

They would have touched it last when flashing their splash screenand doing the logo on the back. But a previous commenter said his gplay device was the same. I would look at how the phone fits in the retail packaging. Does it have room to move around at all, is what i would be looking at.

I think it has some room to move because there doesn't seem to be anything keeping it in place or anything protective it has to sit on. Its just sitting on indent of the phone with the documentation. I think it happened during shipping possibly especially if it was man handled it could bounce around and scuff up but idk? i don't see how sliding on cardboard could cause marks like that.
Im also still waiting on Gplay to reply and fix there system to get me a new replacement...
Did you have any issues getting AT&T to initiate the return? This is ridiculous, mine has this too.

AT&T wouldn't have done it themselves, just semantically speaking.
They would have made a deal with the OEM (Motorola) to make the modifications on their behalf before packaging.
Not defending AT&T or anything, of course.
