I remember we were promised a 2.1 update officially from SE when I bought the phone. I recently spoke with a programmer for SE though, so I understand why it's taking them so long, and I'm not that mad about it.

When I bought this phone, the whole reason I bought it was for the promised upgrade too 2.1 at the end of Q3. If I had known they were going to delay it, then yes I would have just gotten a Desire.
I have every right to moan and complain when they promised something and then didn't deliver.

I knew the phone was loaded with 1.6, but I also took solace in the fact that an update was imminent. This however hasn't been fulfilled, hence the frustration. Iv never posted about 2.1 on the x10, but your anger is misplaced

Tell ya what though - I'm glad they postponed the release of 2.1
While SE might have released it before the end of September, there was then going to be country changes, and the my carrier was bound to hold onto it for well over a month or two, and I'd probably still be waiting until mid 2011
So now I can just relax and enjoy 1.6 again, instead of getting hung up on an update.
See, I don't give two craps about the difference between 1.6 and 2.1 and 8.7, I just like shiny stuff.
Now I'm off to play with myself.

got my white x10i in the first week it released and i dun even know anythung about android os version (this is my first android device) so i was just quietly being patience waiting for the update...however now i start getting frustrated on these non-sense threads.
too many complaining in this forum now and i think MODS should start taking further actions to clean up some threads.....
the forum initally has some useful information...but now trying to search the forum for some specific topics and/or solutions will yield to so many useless threads in return....

Because they want to make sure we get the best experience out of the phone.
Because it's SE's first attempt at Android
Because there's a lot of customisations, rather than just plain old 2.1
Because sometimes things take longer than expected
Because if you ever had Windows Mobile, you'd know you never ever ever get an update
Because sometimes companies release 1000s of updates, mainly to fix issues the introduced with the previous update - SE want's to release an update without bugs
Because it's not really taking that long
Because there's nothing wrong with 1.6
Because some of the x10 community have become impatient, it seems like a long time
Because good things take time
Because they can
Because they have more to do in their time than just give you 2.1
Because it's interesting to watch the reactions of people
Because they might have to reprogram a lot of their UI to work with 2.1
Because 2.1 ain't perfect anyway
Because there should be another point here but I can't remember
Because I like making bullet points
Instead of whining about the problem, why not become part of the solution.
Ask yourself "what can I do to help Sony along?"

+1. Guess that sum up everything
[*]Because they SE...

...........Because they are completely redesigning the UI

What I can't wrap my head around is if people wanted 2.1 or 2.2, why didn't they just buy a device that was already at the higher version.
It's not like there weren't any available. 99% of the countries where the X10 is officially sold have had a pretty nice selction of devices. And the world isn't lacking in unlocked devices....Even in Japan, the Desire came out only 3 months after the X10. (And was quickly pulled from the shelves. Apparently it's being re-released in October, with 2.2 preinstalled)
If these same people are so willing to sell their X10s just so they can have a newer Android version now instead of in a few weeks, why did they buy the phone in the first place???
I just can't understand.

@chris_knows... What did the SE programmer tell you?
Sent from my x10 using XDA and swype.

What:s wrong with Android 1.6? It still make my X10 looks good.
if we compare with other x series..x2 for instance. I must say "OH MY GOD"

I dont really want to be back to an UnRooted phone, so I will wait a bit to try the 2.1 until the Root is fully tested

Incase I wasn't clear enough in my previous post, I don't care for smart-ass answers. I wanted to know what caused the delay from a SE programmer's point of view. I said I was 'curious'. How is that whining?
@chris_knows: perhaps I'll just pm you since this forum has changed drastically since when I joined it. People will now attack you if they think there's even the slightest chance of someone attacking their beloved X10 (just for the record, I have no problems with my phone, I'm just CURIOUS)

The Definitive Android 2.1 Upgrade Chart - Updated With User Interfaces

Alright, like everyone else, I have grown tired of all the complaining about the 2.1 update. Yes, I would love to get my hands on the official update as I feel our 2.1 leak was pretty buggy. The devs have done great with what they have to work with, and I love running 2.1 even with some of the quirks that are inherent to a hacked ROM.
What I don't get is how everyone can be so upset with Sprint. Personally, I am on Sprint because they are cheap, and offer good cell phone service where I live. That's it. If you are upset with your carrier (as I was with my extremely high bills on Verizon) then buy out your contract and go to another carrier. However, don't expect that you will get your magical 2.1 upgrade any sooner with any other carrier.
Do most people realize that there is not a single Android phone for sale in America that has ever been upgraded to 2.1 from 1.5 or 1.6? In fact, there are only three phones that have ever even received an Android OS upgrade at all. The T-Mobile G1 (1.0-1.6), the T-Mobile myTouch 3G (1.5-1.6), and the Motorola Droid (2.0-2.1). That's it people.
For all the people blaming Sprint, HTC, or even Sense for how long it's taking them, look around. The T-Mobile G1 and myTouch3G both came out before the Hero, both run vanilla Andoid, and neither of them have been upgraded to 2.1. Just look at all the phones that are still running 1.5 and 1.6.
Personally, I think it will be hilarious if Sprint is the first carrier in America to upgrade a phone from 1.5 to 2.1. If this upgrade happens soon, this will certainly be the case. I just don't get how people can be so upset that we don't have the official 2.1 yet when there are only three phones that have it (two of which launched with it, and one of which launched with 2.0).
I apologize for making a new thread, but I wanted the chart below to have it's own space, and I didn't want it to get buried in one of the many other 2.1 threads. I believe this chart contains every Android phone available on one of the 4 major carriers in America. I compiled this list using wikipedia, so I didn't verify that it is 100% valid. I listed only phones available in America, and cleaned up the formatting to make it useful. Enjoy.

I Gotta say that no one should be PO'D at Sprint,HTC or any other company for that matter, Sprint is the Best carrier I've been. Quit whining 2.1 will arrive before you all know it. Shut up root your hero while you still can flash a custom 2.1 rom and be happy. i Know im not gonna to upgrade to the official release. Ill wait to one my fav dev's puts out a 2.1 rom based off the otw upgrade with all fat trimmed off so it runs the way it should. So everybody behave your selves the upgrade from sprint will come no doubt, then you can go back to whining about how laggy and buggy your 2.1 hero is.
As for me Im gonna flash toast's new one fresh-toast 1.1, oh maybe something from damageless, oh hey darchstar's got a new one wow decision, decisions, lol
Thanks for doing this.
This definitively shows that the problem is not with Sprint and that manufacturers seem to have decided that there is no benefit to them whatsoever to supporting existing customers. Google is also failing to get the situation under control.
"Want the latest version of Android? Pay up."
That's what this chart says to me, loud and clear.

I agree that people should stop whining about 2.1, it's more annoying than the 2.1 posts.
I guess my personal aggravation is the fact that it seems if you don't have the latest and greatest phone through your carrier's catalog you seem to just be cast in the corner. Was it not just 5 months ago the Hero was the savior and pride and joy of sprint's network and now with the evo on its way it's as if were the red headed child sitting in the corner. I agree that when it comes it comes but I just don't like the feel a company gives when they do something like that. Yes market and pay attention to your new toy but don't forget your loyal followers and their needs when we're locked in to at least 12 months with a phone you just called the greatest thing since the last big hit.
Its always been the same with every OS and every carrier. I remember being wint Windows same thing, these company make the money in the hardware not software therefore it's no business sense to give a great deal of support for older hardware. The truth of the matter is that for companies like HTC, people will continue to purchase the latest, even after all the waiting on the Hero most people will still go out and get the Evo. The only company making great support is Apple.

sprint still sucks Di** in my opinion, 2.1 or not
I will tell you why I am upset with sprint over this. It's because sprint in conjunction with HTC and Samsung decided back late last year that instead of doing maintenance updates to fix the known issues with both phones they would upgrade the phones to 2.1 and include the fixes then. This certainly implied some urgency on their part. But apparently none of the companies involved put enough resources into the upgrade. Also this fantasy of doing both phones at the same time tells me they are not interested in getting the updates out as soon as they are available because someone might be upset if one gets done before the other.
I rooted back in Jan and my phone works great. But I also expect when I buy a premium phone that it is supported properly by Sprint and the phone manufactures. If they can't do that then they have failed. I don't care if no other phone has been upgraded to 2.1. Every other carrier in the US has a phone that runs 2.1 yet sprint can't even give us a date to have that option. They have really screwed this up.

Well since I don't go to salespersons who don't in some way look after my interests that would mean that I wouldn't go back to Sprint. I have no intention of doing that. Sprint provides a quality service at an affordable price. They just can't afford to continue to make mistakes like this or they will continue their decline until they are out of business and I don't want to see that happen.
it's the old "fire and forget" routine.

Completely off topic, but has anyone ever actually had to say "TouchWiz" out loud to someone?
Talk about the worst product name ever. I don't think I could buy a phone with that UI on it, simply because I would be too embarrassed to actually tell anyone that I was playing with my "TouchWiz".

What the hell? AT&Fee doesn't have a 2.1 device and neither does T-Mobile really. They have the Nexus One, but it is not sold in stores and with all the hardware and software issues, it's not worth mentioning. The only carrier with any 2.1 devices is Verizon and that is just as of now. The MT3G, EVO, and other devices are well on the way.
think of it this way... you're gonna want to run Froyo when it comes out anyway & NO WAY is Sprint or HTC gonna bother with an official upgrade for that. They'll be pushing the EVO/Next Big Thing. Thank goodness for the great developers working on stuff here.

iPhone 4 out and still no android 2.2 - very disappointed

And what's wrong with google that they can't publish deadline.
No wonder developers prefer iOS: Apple can be relied on. Google is just unreliable and all over the map.

What features should have been in 1.0 that are in 2.2? WiFi Tethering and Apps2SD? They have given legitimate reasons, in my opinion as to why they didn't include them.

I totally agree that the iphone made many mistakes and there is a ton of wrong with it even today. But google is in the nice position to be able to copy their functionality (which they do a lot) ... and they still can't get it done?
Features that should have been in android 1.0: Exchange support? A proper email client? Copy and paste in emails? Saving and sending of attachments? Download files from the internet? ... none of these is even in 2.1! Some are finally supposed to come in 2.2!
I am not saying that the iPhone is great (in fact it is the worse of two evils - android and iphone) ... but at least they can publish and stick to a schedule.
PS: Loving the trolls even more - if you dare to criticize android and google (no matter whether it is legitimatly or not) they come out of their caves. Hehehehehe! Trolls, trolls, trolls!
Maybe some people just don't work in the real world and don't understand how things work. You can only put so much work and so many features into a given development time period. And then you have to chose what makes the cut and what does not. Then repeat for the next update. Different company will give different priority to a feature making the cut vs another company.
About the 2.2 update, don't worry Google is holding it back on purpose just from you and they don't wanna give the release date just to keep you from knowing it. Or maybe they don't know the date.

nothing has changed..

so the streak has been released in the US now and for quite some time in the UK/euro and nothing has changed.
we got a few companys making cases that are neither unique or exciting but basically we are still stuck with a niche device with a small user base. now i love my streak but i cant help but feel is only a matter of time before it gets pulled from sale and all support/updates axed. i know at the moment its a hot device but you have to admit there is a air of death in the air compared to say the galaxy S.
i hope im wrong but i really dont think i am.
Isnt 2.2 suppose to be released in September for streaks in America? Then again I don't think it's confirmed. Once 2.2 is out things should speed up also the fact the streak doesn't appeal to a massive audience it seems to appeal more to us geeks that's all we need. It shouldnt be to long before dell release the source i would imagine.
Also no offense to the galaxy s but it has its fair share of problems and that really doesn't do it any favors so I wouldn't be writing about that .

if Dell get the marketing right they could have a hit on their hands. here in the UK i've been out the field the last week (literally, camping) and the Streak proved it's mettle and a great talking point. now, at this juncture i think Dell suffer a bit from being branded a "box shifter" but i honestly think if Dell get their values correct with the Streak it will be around for a long time.
however, i am the first to admit that Dell does not have a great track record at leading a category - they tend to do whatever Microsoft and intel tell them to do (to the tune of a few tens of millions of dollars if anyone's been following the court case).
you just know when Apple release a 5" pocket computerphone that the pod people will buoy the marketing along for Apple ... Dell just does not inspire that kind of loyalty, or, is/has been getting the grass roots/astroturfing balancing act totally wrong.
It very much reminds me the story of N900.
Great hardware with great potential killed by the lack of interest of manufacturer, caused by the inability of big corporations to follow up on innovation.
I think the reason it does not move so fast at the moment is the lack if an updated os, but having mine for about an week now, I have to say the old os is somehow conceiled very good. The only lacks are the newest features that I have become used to via eclair and froyo..
And I am very sure that a lot of people are waiting to buy until froyo arrives. And as more and more people get tech interested, these " niche" gadgets get more popular.. So my two cents say that Dell will have the success they intended with the device.

I just don't see it. This device caters to geeks basically. Most consumers don't want a gigantic phone. My personal experiences have been normal consumers saying the device is too big, too ugly, and too niche.

This is what I heard from a regular Mac+iPhone user. And non-pocketable.
Until he took streak to a hand noticing how thin it is. And it fits into my pocket! Amazing. And the touch screen is very nice...
Overall reception was "it's not that stupid as it looks"

It bugs me that so many reviewers cite old "firmware" (presumably they mean OS) as a reason to mark down the Streak. That's a crap reason, and a hallmark of a crap reviewer IMHO. I bought my Streak over the Desire because I knew that any (ok... most) software issues can and will be corrected, either by Dell or by us lot over here... but no software update will allow the Desire to browse the internet so comfortably, or be a reasonable e-reader, or enhance the (slightly) weaker battery, or make it such a beautiful platform for CoPilot, etc. In face, the only thing I did not like was the proprietary connector (because that can't be fixed by software). That is, until I found out it's a PDMI port.
A friend of mine recently crowed about updating his Desire to Froyo. I asked if it'd upgraded him to a 5" screen. He looked sad.
I just can't help feeling that over the next few months, we will find the Streak becoming greater and greater as cooked ROMs emerge. Good times ahead.
Honestly I think our best hope for Froyo is to keep bugging Dell about their GPL violations until they release their source so the community can get it up and running themselves (and yes, that's not such a great option either). Given what I have seen so far, I wouldn't really trust Dell on this.

You are not wrong. And that's why I haven't bought one yet. I even get a 10% Dell discount because I'm a student. But the lack of buzz and adoption of the Streak almost guarantees it to obscurity or failure. At that time I'll happily pick one up. I feel it's just priced too high and will slide down the closer we get to super/hot/awesome/fire greatness or the next thing. I'd like it to succeed as well, but I think Dell has screwed this from the start.

I will assume the idea from Dell was not to release this as an "mainstream" device, but a device to appeal to geeks and such. It is no way that Dell thinks 5" is a phone for the mass market!
I am pretty sure this is a device launched to make Dell look like an serious actor to be reckoned with in the future. Genius would I say starting on the top of the pack.
But, just my opinion....

the Streak makes them look 'tacky n nasty little boys toys', which is what they are.
The Streak is like owning a top of the range BMW, you're not going to find accessories for it in Halfords/Wallmart
With a lot of bug...
I think the real failure in north america is the device is locked to at&t used only.
At the end, it's a nice device to have.
I think that is a good product too but the network driver is very buggy in 2.1 (8023) and if this release is the final release, it's a very bad things....

I don't think i've ever visited a forum where people download an OBVIOUSLY UNFINISHED AND UNTESTED ITEM then all winge about it
All the BS about it being official and how you should send the 'leaker' a donation makes me want to puke.
NEWS: the official one (when released) will be mentioned on the official websites, them being Dell or 02 themselves which will have a link, might be a bit obvious for some!
If Dell Streak owners are all that gullible, i'm going to start buying all the old first release 1.6 seconhand ones on ebay i can find, install 2.1 then sell them as BNIB just delivered from factory. As they obviously believe everything they are told.
In the End

On my X5 they had to exchange 2 shocks in the first 18 months (fortunately they did for free even though after the warranty expired).
Besides, was there ever a perfect product?? Look at the iphone, took them a whole year just to get cut and paste, 3 years to get even basic multi-tasking.
cut and paste are not here on my Dell Streak...
Only on specific application but not on email...
Yes, I know that this build is a "beta" but from this topic and an other this build (8023) is a GM build, isn't it ?
So, If this build is a GM, I think the network driver is not finished, that all !
I have full network at home with my iPhone and my HTC and my Dell Streak too, but I lost the network on my Dell Streak frequently...

When did SE ever say they were updating beyond 2.1 when you bought your phone? They even told us that there was no multi-touch because of hardware constraints when we bought our phones, but they went out of their way to bring it to us anyways. We bought this device already behind the Android curve with 1.6, but now you expect it to have the newest version??? If you feel entitled to continuous updates, you must not have been around the past 20 years of the technology revolution. This is how it works. We have to pay for the research and development of new technology. If you don't want to buy something, just to have something better from the same manufacturer come out around the corner, then you either need to not buy anything or wait 10 years until the technology is not in its infant stage of development. The Xperia is nearing the end of its lifecycle, so this is to be expected. Did you complain to Microsoft when Windows 7 came out and you didn't get your pc upgraded for free?

Please stop spreading such silly quotes. The X10 was first shown in November of 2009. It was released in 2010 around March. It is nowhere near the end of it's life cycle. Besides, that's a horrible excuse on Sony's part.

to start with, it is NOT Sony....it is Sony Ericsson. Completely different. Secondly, they never promised anything above 2.1. Thirdly, we are a very small part of the user base for the x10 handset. the vast majority of x10 users do not even know of xda developers let alone how to install the xrecovery menu or flash 2.2.1 beta onto their handset - let alone care. Sony Ericsson are all about selling handsets and appeasing the market.
we are **** out of luck.
For me, its time to leave SE behind and jump ship to a manufacturer that is actually interested in supporting the modding community, instead of one that actively tries to block it.
ok, im sorry, im getting sick of these "I effin hate sony" threads.
so i am finally going to put my .02 in.
first of all, is this the only thing you have ever bought in your life? how many purchases do you make in a week that you can step back and say, man this is awesome im so glad i bought this, this will be perfect for years to come.
exactly, none, have you ever bought a phone/pda that was perfect that would last you forever? and if so why did you buy the X10 if you were so perfectly happy?
i just dont understand how people can buy a $500 device, that in all honesty DOES impress, and DOES what its supposed to do pretty god damned well, and still freakin complain that 9 months later theres better technology out there.....SHEESH! welcome to life people! you can never have the "best" of something for more than a week. there will always be something "better" or "newer".
so i just bought new tires for my dodge ram, they cost hella lot more than my x10, so i guess i should go to my local tire store again in 9 months and whine about how my 9 month old tires dont look brand new anymore right?
come on man seriously, if you think sony lied to you or you hate this device so bad, freakin sell it buy an ifail 4 and leave us the fack alone. because im sure im not the only one here who's getting sick of the same lame "eff sony!!" bullishhh.

As a fellow Singaporean, I'm ashamed that you are making a fool out of yourself here.
Let me get this fact straight -
The initial promise to upgrade WAS because they could not churn out a 2.0 or higher OS and sold us 1.6 instead, so they had to promise us an upgrade.
Being said by an upgrade, there already were hints that it would be 2.1, despite the hordes of kids around the world whining and setting up petitions for 2.2.
This news was all over the net last year. A promised 2.1.
But after that, people got greedy and asked for further upgrades. There WERE lots of topics with people being delusional trying to give themselves hope about having further upgrades.
Some even went ahead and emailed Sony Ericsson, already with replies that "there are no plans of further upgrades" and such, but still, they still maintained in delusion.
you think your $1,088 can last them for 2 years? It's barely 1 month's worth of pay for 1 staff. If they don't come up with new phones with better OS to entice you to buy them, they might close down their company since you won't spend another $1,088 on them for the next 2 years.
If you want a solution to this, fine. Email to them and tell them you don't mind paying them for receiving upgrades. In this case, I'm sure they will churn out a 2.2 exclusively for you.
What I don't get is, why do they have to feed us such bullsh*t about why we aren't getting any more android updates? There's no way they can claim that their ROM is better than vanilla 2.2. Sure, it has a few features that aren't found in stock 2.2, but there's a reason google released 2.2. And there is a reason more than 50% of the current android phones are running on 2.2. We, on the other hand, are stuck on a version of android that was announced before the phone launched. (or around the same time)
I have no problem with no further android os updates, since we can just flash 2.2 roms and soon 2.3. But please, don't give us that nonsense about 'no drastic change in user experience'. Let them admit that they are too lazy to go back and redo Timescape and Mediascape for 2.2 and I'll be happy.
Having said that, I was a happy X10 user until this morning. Now I just feel like an ass for defending my phone against all my friends who have already got 2.2 long ago on their phones and they taunt me with voice actions and flash

wow, seriously.
everyone should know by now that any tech item you buy, is out dated a few weeks after it's released.
and WHAT IF SE miraculously gives us 2.2, or even 2.3? when 2.4 comes out, are we to complain again?
my x10 came free as an upgrade with my contract. it had 1.6, and att x10's still don't have a native 2.1 upgrade. but again, it's a free phone (yes, i understand that the phone is eventually paid for throughout the contract in some ways).
unless you plan on purchasing a new device every month, don't expect to always have something that is running the latest and greatest. SE would lose money and shut down if they put 100% of their time and effort into 1 device and not into developing new devices. you can't expect SE to update the phone for as long as you decide to keep it.
seriously, why in the hell couldn't commodore release a windows 7 upgrade for the commodore 64?
I'm quite happy, as long as they sort out audio glitches, which I'm sure they will, remember the 0.4 second audio sync problem with video playback?

And the Android Version is not up to Date what i would expect for this price ..

CW Latest Comparison Puts SE Last with 0

To quote
There's really no way to sugar coat it: Sony failed when it came to Android upgrades in 2010. It gets a big fat zero all around, and with confirmation that its Xperia X10 phones will never see Froyo, there's really no hope remaining. To be fair, Sony Ericsson execs have been quoted as saying they're now better prepared to make upgrades for their newer phones, such as the recently announced Xperia Arc -- so we can only hope the company is at least serious about making some serious improvements.

Anyone considering ARC after having got X10 should seriuosly consult a Doctor...
I had enough of SE for last 5 years and i for one am not going to buy another phone from these liars ....
Yep, their comments on SE sum it up nicely. Though I'm not willing to give SE the benfit of the doubt when it comes to their "promise" for the Arc.
Good to see that major tech websites recognize how much SE has screwed up, and call them on it.
IMO this was Se's first android phone, and they f*cked it up bigtime. I believe they will make sure they don't make any mistakes with the Arc.
Nonetheless, I am not getting the Arc until at least 6-12 months after its release, so that I know everything about it, which will save me from being disappointed again
i would just like to warn all of those ppl who don't know what a fail xperia is and stop them from buying the Arc.... what a shame...

The X10 may have been their first Android phone, but it wasn't THE first Android phone (in fact, it was released 18 months after the first Android phone, and after most carriers had already gotten into the game). Nor was it their first smartphone. They screwed their support with the Xperia X1 and X2 several years back. It's just their way.

Froyo is now available for Dell Streak ,
the problem with SE is hat why spending 5 mounth to dev 2.1 version : froyo was on the market from June and the 2.1 upgrade occur in November , why they dont relase directly 2.2 Rom

This. That's why I insist on reading a point of view of whoever defends/agrees with SE's policy.
I'll defend
I'm probably more like your average consumer, being not nearly as cell phone technology savvy as most here.
The X10 was my first SE purchase after having various Motorola's, LG's, and Samsung's. I had quite a few software and hardware issues with each of these phones and I have to say that the X10 has been the most reliable and best performing of the bunch for all the "basics"--making calls, texting, taking pictures and browsing the internet. I have yet to experience a spontaneous shut down or bizzarre "ghost in the machine" anomaly, like I have with almost all of my other phones. I have actually found SE's customer support to be better than most. I'm not what you would call a power user, so for me, the delay in getting OS upgrades has been barely a nuisance. I care much more about hardware build quality, attractive design and reliability. SE has done very well in this regard and I would have no qualms about purchasing the Arc as my next smart phone. In fact, as soon as AT&T gets it, I will.

it is not a competition on who will win the argument.
as I have stated before, Samsung is considering locking the bootloader ( actually they have started to do so ), So you can see that other companies are following SE strategy in terms of OS....
On the other hand, have you tried Samsung Galaxy S? HTC Desire HD?, Galaxy Tab?
they all come with 2.2 FroYo, BUT, they are unreliable, I know because I have tried them all, I have been using other phones along with the X10i, and one thing I have found is that X10's 2.1 is the most stable and reliable than any other 2.2s available there ( Unless you get to spend hours customizing and editing ROMs )...
Bottom line is, if you want to have freedom with your phone and don't mind spending hours, several re-flashes, several bricks, and other things then go with the other brands.. If you want stability, do not care about custom ROMs, reliability, then go with SE
Sony Ericsson's aim is for the end-user just to use the beautiful UI along with the beautiful design, they haven't designed it for the devs and tech people to mess with it....
I know there are many who hate SE for their strategy, but there are more who love them for their design and quality...
and as stated above my post, their customer service is by far more professionally and helpful than others ( tried both Xperia service and SE service, not mentioning their Pureness concierge )
And as far as the ARC, will buy it as soon as it gets into the market, matter of fact is, will buy one for my brother as well as my father, as they both liked the Xperia 10.
