HSPA Icon - XPERIA X10 General

Does the "3g" icon change to anything else when connected over HSPA?
I only ask because i found out today that i should have been on my carriers HSPA network, but they had forgotten to authorise me for it. That was rectified this afternoon, but i have yet to see any different icons. I was expecting a "h" or something.
Any ideas?

i was wondering the same thing too,
i remember seeing it one a screenshot but wasnt sure

Nope there is no HSDPA or HSUPA icons in the framework, just 3G ones in the Generic Worlwide framework, although other firmwares have reported one to be there.

I have also been wondering about this because I saw the "H" icon on the HTC Hero running Android 1.5.
But it's not such a big deal since I have been able to reach HSPA speeds despite the icon showing "3G".

On froyo it will show an h up there well it does on the galaxy s once rooted and its a custom rom ported from international galaxy s. So I think any new updates would show it. Hope this helps.

HSPA+???

on tmobiles site it advertises that all the new-ish phones have the ability to use HSPA+ do i need to change my APNs on The Aria ROM??? if so What Are the new APNs
You will never be able to use HSPA+ on a Slide, T-Mobile does not claim that you will be able to either.
t-mobile does claim that you can, and you can. i have experienced 6 times faster speed since they turned on the tower near my place. i have HSPA+ at home and now average 3.5-4.5 Mbps rather than the .8 Mbps i had with standard 3G. my apn says epc.tmobile.com i do not know if there are other settings needed, but i am using CM6RC1 and getting phenomenal speeds(compared to some friends that have EVO on 4G)

That's cause sprint's "4G" is not as fast as Tmo's HSPA+...There was an article on their speeds on engadget.
that jappened to be my point, i was stating that t-mo was better(faster) and that r0manz was wrong

I'm not wrong.
There are no HSPA+ phones presently being sold in the United States, that being said you can get up to 7.2mbps on T-Mobile HSPA network at present on the Vibrant, Slide, and others
He's right they can take advantage of the speeds, but are not actually HSPA+ phones, the first one will be the t-mobile G2 as announced by t-mobile.

This HSPA+ has been pretty awesome..Out of every person I know that has tmobile and a 3G enabled phone I have been the only one able to pick it up and my wife has the Vibrant, plus several others that I know with the Slide and other android phones... It started about a week ago when I first noticed that 3G turn into an H. I am running the latest CyanogenMod and I have not altered any settings on my phone whatsoever. The only thing I have been able to come up with is that its because of the Froyo ROM... Anyone agree?? But this s**t is great! I ran a speedtest while I was at work yesterday and I almost got a 6 Mbps connection and a 1.5 Mbps upload while connected to the HSPA network!!!
But like others said earlier in the thread our Slides will not be able to take full advantage of the HSPA+ speeds and will never be able to...but Ill take it because its just not everyday that a cell phone provider gives you 6x speed boost and doesn't charge you extra for it... GO T-MOBILE!!!

I'm pretty sure the only reason you're getting the "H" instead of the "3G" logo is because in the CyanogenMOD 6 Stable release, the "3G" graphic was replaced with the "H".

I have not used froyo on the SLide, the "H" icon is included with every rom but if cyan changed the name of the H icon to replace 3G then it would make sense, but i doubt he would do that to trick people. Every rom has the H icon in the framework folder.
He did not replace it, I am running a CM6 rom and in certain areas I will pick up HSPA, but in most places I go in Huntsville, AL its 3G signal, with the 3G icon showing in my status bar.
There is also a noticable difference in browsing and download speeds when I am able to pull HSPA, so its not just displaying it in error.
On the stock ROM you never see the "H" icon, but if I look in About Phone -> Network I often see "HSDPA" under mobile network type. I assume T-Mobile has mapped the 3G icon to that network type to minimize user confusion. I also see the 3G icon when connected to a UMTS network.
As has been pointed out earlier, that doesn't mean you will get the HSPA+ speeds and in fact they haven't even rolled out HSPA+ in my area yet.
I am running the latest CM for the slide. Ever since I flashed it, I haven't seen the 3G symbol, only H. I live in Salt Lake City Utah, and according to T-Mobile, they haven't enabled HSPA+ here yet. So I'm not sure why H would be showing up instead of 3G. Since I've tested my speed using the Speedtest.net app, and it comes up with ping 103ms D:637kbps U:759kbps, I highly doubt that is HSPA+ speeds.

I thought it was the radio update that had the H in it.
Using Chiefz rom I get H when I'm by my school.

Check under settings, about phone, status and look at what it says under Mobile Network Type. If it says HSDPA you will see the H icon, if it say UMTS you will see 3G. The H Icon is showing up because it is the begginings of HSPA+ without the fiber back haul ran to the tower, or they haven't switched it on yet. The phone sees the H network and displays the H icon, it doesn't know that it isn't HSPA+ or HSDPA, if your were still stock you would only ever see 3G.
So does that mean that stock rom (I have ChiefzReloaded's modified 1.35.531 rom) still takes advantage of HSPA+ even though it will only show 3G on the status bar? Or would I have to switch to another ROM to take advantage of it?
I remember when I was testing which rom I liked, I had tried a 2.2 rom and seen the H in my status bar, but never tested the speed. At the moment, I don't get speeds faster than 750 kbps down and 70 kbps up.. really disappointed since they already have HSPA+ here in Houston (and its suburbs).

Mine says HSDPA. So I guess that is because they haven't flipped the switch here yet. Thanks for the information.
I am running a stock ROM and under mobile network type I usually see "HSDPA" even though the "3G" icon appears. The point is that on the stock ROM you will see the "3G" icon whether you are connected to a UMTS or HSDPA network, and on the CM ROM you see the "H" icon when you connect to an HSDPA network. But the icon does not limit your speed. You will still get the benefit of HSDPA (and to some degree HSPA+) networks either way.

No H symbol in notification bar

I'm in UK on O2 network. I know I have good HSDPA coverage, there's nothing wrong with signal, network or the simcard as I have 5 other smartphones available to me which I've tried the simcard in.
Basically the problem is it only shows as 3G & not H in the notification bar. Does that mean the Nexus S is not HSDPA compatible even though the spec sheet say it is or is it a bug or something.
It will show 3G when on HSPA. It's how Google designed it.
I noticed the same 'issue' Samsung Galaxy S and HTC phones all say H for HSDPA speed conections. I got most confused with my nexus S. I'm also on O2 in the UK.
In any case OP goto settings>about phone>status and look at Mobile Network Type it will say HSDPA.
Personally I'd like google to fix this as 3G data rate is slower!

I've entered this as a feature request on Google's Android Code site: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13561
Please star it to help get it attention.
(Please avoid "me too" or "fix this" type comments that don't add additional information to further describe the request or bug, as these comments are then emailed to everyone who has starred the issue and some consider it as bad as spam. I've un-starred comments myself because of all the pointless emails.)

It's a cosmetic thing and has no bearing on what type of speeds you pull.

^ What he said. Also not all HTC phones display "H." The only ones that I'm aware of that do it out of the box are the MT4G and G2 due to changes in Android by T-Mobile.
You might be thinking about the custom ROMs where developers usually will add the ability to the notification bar framework for it to display 3G or H depending on what you're currently connected to (UTMS vs HSDPA). You're usually only on UTMS if you have a weak signal, or if you're idling(as in the phone isn't currently pulling down/sending up information). Once you start doing something, it'll automatically flip over to HSDPA.
I do miss the H i had on my N1 with CM6
hopefully CM7 hits beta soon
HSPA is still 3g...its not lying to you lol. You just won't know when you have acess to FASTER 3g lol

You can actually enable it yourself if you decompile framework-res.apk, modify it (res/value/books.xml), recompile and replace the stock one.

[Q] regarding sudden network changes and lack of LTE

Hi All. Ive looked around but haven't seen a similar issue to mine, but it might not be a "bad" issue..not sure...here goes!
Samsung galaxy s4. Fido (Canada) so equivalent to the AT&T version.
The top of my S4 has what network i am on. Sometimes it says "3g", sometimes "h+" (i am guessing HSPA) and sometimes "4G" (i am guessing LTE but i am not certain)
Never does my phone give me an icon of "LTE", and i am in an LTE zone in Montreal. Ive done multiple speedtests, and when its on "4G" i get good speeds between 20 and 50 mbps down
My question : Is the S4 supposed to say "LTE" and i am not getting it for some reason?
Or
Does "4G" actually mean LTE?
If anyone knows or has experience in this i would really appreciate the help and clarification
ps. I just upgraded to an S4 from my 2009 Iphone 3gs, and im so happy

I just got my s4 today from rogers in Ontario, it does say LTE at the top, hasn't ever dropped to 3g or anything else yet. Make sure you have a LTE micro sim, i had to get a new one as the one in my iphone 4s was not LTE.

You might want to make sure your "APN" is correct for LTE connections in your area. You can use google or the forums search function to learn more about what your APN should be if it isn't already correct.

Ive looked around the forums and i beleive i have the correct APN (Fido LTE). Looking around other settings, under "network mode" the icon i have selected is "LTE/GSM/WCDA (auto connect)"
I guess now i am more at the stage of defining the various icons. Ive found many definitions on XDA but these definitions are all for various roms.
for instance:
Originally Posted by BNaughty http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31827119
AOSP ROMs will always be G, E, 3G, H, H+, 4G
G - GPRS
E - Edge
3G - 3G
H - 3.5G down
H+ - 3.5 G up/down
4G - LTE
in other pages ive seen H+ mean 4g, and LTE meaning LTE.
So a more specific question now.
According to Android 4.2.2 (android 4+ anyways, should be the same) with touchwiz, what do the icons correspond to?
According to the samsung SGH I337M manual:
E refers to connection/communication with the edge network.
3G refers to connection/communication with the UTMS network.
H+ refers to connection/communication with HSPA or HSPA + network.
LTE refers to connection/communication with an 4G LTE network.
Issue is that i get an icon that is not on this list. I get an icon that says simply "4G"
Not sure what this icon refers to..possibly LTE, possibly HSPA+? I called samsung canada, and they dont seem to know either...neither does fido, but im not surprised.
again if anyone knows, i would appreciate it

it is lte if your area has it, do a speed test and see.
I'll repost my reply in a similar thrèad.
It's not so much as "LTE" isn't big in Europe, it's actually more... political than you would think. The american carriers jumped on calling their 3.5g networks "4g" because they could achieve 5Mbps using slightly tweaked 3g hardware. (which was much faster than the carriers's 3g networks) In america, "LTE" is the same as "4g" everywhere else, because internationally, there were no marketing politics to call HSPA+ "4g". AT&T, Tmobile, and Sprint all lied to you when they advertised 4G, they were simply using 3g technology that could access enhanced 3g signal. I will forever call HSPA+ 3.5G, because that's semantically what it really is.
"LTE" is the formal name for 4G in the rest of the world that does not have marketing politics that lied to you about HSPA+ being "4G". 4G in the rest of the world means LTE, not HSPA+, not DC-HSPA (Tmobile's 4g liar network).
On that note, 4G isn't too common in Europe because the carriers are still negotiating the way in which it will operate. It has to do with the internet capabilities of Europe (as a whole) more than anything else, because fast internet isn't really a priority in Europe as it is in Japan or Korea (or somewhat as it is in the US and Germany)

[Q] New to me 3G status of data?

Google store Nexus 4 on T-Mobile pre-pay plan. Stock Android 4.4.4.
My statuses for mobile data were either 'H', or nothing at all (just bars). For the first time ever I am seeing a '3G' mobile data icon in the bar but I don't think the phone has been updated or changed in any other way - I'm not really concerned as much as puzzled as to what is different now.

H is hspa(or HSPA+), i dont remember if the n4 has an H+ for hspa+. anyways, that is 3G, but a faster version, like 3.5G. H+ is faster than H, and consists of data download speeds near LTE speeds, but slower upload than LTE. so if you are seeing a 3G now, then youre on a slower network.

I know what the speeds/radios are and what they mean; I wasn't clear enough in my question then.
For the life of this phone on T-Mobile, they've elected to show either 'H' or nothing at all to denote the lower tier GSM connectivity; I'm wondering why, now, they (or some firmware update to the towers, or ?) have elected to start putting '3G' on the status. I've just never had it before. Can others on T-Mo speak to this?
