it is lte if your area has it, do a speed test and see.
I'll repost my reply in a similar thrèad.
It's not so much as "LTE" isn't big in Europe, it's actually more... political than you would think. The american carriers jumped on calling their 3.5g networks "4g" because they could achieve 5Mbps using slightly tweaked 3g hardware. (which was much faster than the carriers's 3g networks) In america, "LTE" is the same as "4g" everywhere else, because internationally, there were no marketing politics to call HSPA+ "4g". AT&T, Tmobile, and Sprint all lied to you when they advertised 4G, they were simply using 3g technology that could access enhanced 3g signal. I will forever call HSPA+ 3.5G, because that's semantically what it really is.
"LTE" is the formal name for 4G in the rest of the world that does not have marketing politics that lied to you about HSPA+ being "4G". 4G in the rest of the world means LTE, not HSPA+, not DC-HSPA (Tmobile's 4g liar network).
On that note, 4G isn't too common in Europe because the carriers are still negotiating the way in which it will operate. It has to do with the internet capabilities of Europe (as a whole) more than anything else, because fast internet isn't really a priority in Europe as it is in Japan or Korea (or somewhat as it is in the US and Germany)

Okay so i'm in an area where T-mobile only has edge coverage and I'm hating my life right now without 3G, but AT&T has 3G coverage here, so why won't it let me roam on to the faster network? I can pull it up under network services but it just won't let me actually roam on to the network. Is this an issue of the phone simply not having the VPN's and such? Cuz if T-mobile won't charge me for roaming I damn well wanna use it! I'm using Cyanogen's Mod and the Hero 1.3.5 theme. All I want for my birthday is 3G!!!
They use different frequency's for the 3G signal.. thats why unlocked G1's can't use att 3g even if they have a AT&T sim
Hmm... seems strange the G1 would still be able to see the network being that it's using a different signal. Is there any way around this? Cuz they just stationed me in Quantico, VA for the rest of the summer and I'm ready to shoot myself on this Edge crap! And sadly 2 months is just too short of a time to actually get internet installed lol
hum.. I doubt it will help any but thier are som VPN settings floating around the board here that haykuro made. most ROMS come with it, I doubt it'll help though.
if that doesn't help take 2 Motrin and drink plenty of water. /end navy joke
Haha, yeah I'm a corpsman, we're working down here at the Marine Corps officer candidate school, so my mantra has been "Take Motrin, hydrate, and change your socks." These past couple weeks. Yet they somehow still mess those things up lol.

Im sorry to say but you cant use 3G on AT&T. Tmobile didnt want to wait for any bands in the 1700mhz or 1900mhz band to become available, so there 3G runs in the 2100/1700mhz band and that is the only band the G1 can use to get 3G. You can see AT&T service but that is voice, not 3G. AT&T 3G runs over the 1700/1900mhz band. here is a artical about this.

You must be barely outside of their coverage area. The map shows 3g coverage on both sides of where you are. The schedule that is floating around says they are supposed to expand coverage to Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Richmond, and Virginia Beach this summer so you might get lucky and get it before you leave.
Quantico's huge, T-Mobile has no 3G service there, and WiFi is out as NMCI doesn't permit wireless APs.
You're stuck with EDGE on T-Mobile, or EDGE on AT&T if you roam, but you won't get a speed increase if you use it, just a roaming charge. The problem is the frequency, as others have mentioned. AT&T uses 850/1900 where as T-Mobile uses 1700/2100. There's no known way (yet *crosses fingers) to use a T-Mobile G1 with AT&T's 3G service, so sadly, you're going to be stuck for 2 months out there with what you have.
I have my Dream working on AT&T's 3G service, and it works quite well, but it's not a G1. I specifically bought a Rogers Canadian HTC Dream (which is band-compatible with AT&T) for this purpose. So if you're *that* desperate for 3G service, you could spring for a Rogers Dream or Magic phone, but they aren't cheap. Additionally, they don't run custom ROMs yet (we just got root on the Rogers Dream this morning, and the Rogers Magic was only last week). So... There is no perfect solution for you yet if you want 3G and root. I've been living on my ADP1 with EDGE for 5 months now, and it isn't *that* bad, I guess.
On the more "bleeding edge" frontier, there's speculation that if one were to flash the Rogers dream radio to the T-Mobile G1, that it would do 3G on AT&T instead of T-Mo, but nobody's been able to get it done yet. A few people say it's the same chipset, it'll work, a few others say it won't, but till somebody tries it, we'll never know for sure. Either way, it's not currently possible as we don't have a Rogers Dream radio image.
So, there's your options I'm afraid. And something else to consider - even though AT&T says they have 3G, check with somebody else who has their service to see if they're actually getting it first. Quantico is a huge base, and there's no cell towers on it to my knowledge. So it's possible that nobody is getting 3G signal there, on either network.
Hi All,
For ALL my Canadian brethren here in the wonderful world of Galaxy Tab goodness, I wish to advise you (some of you may already know) that we are essentially being LIED to by Rogers (and other Canadian carriers) and our devices are NOT true 4G (LTE) devices but are really GLORIFIED 3G/3.5G units.
See the attached pics and you will see that my box for my tab CLEARLY states that it is a 4G Tablet but again I repeat... IT IS NOT!!!
I don't believe that we here in Canada actually have a true 4G / LTE provider and as such Rogers, Bell and Telus have been marketing 3.5G HSPA+ (21+Mbps) Devices as 4G which is unfortunately just NOT true considering that REAL 4g / LTE devices are capable of upwards of 75+ Mbps.
I write this as I wish to help ensure that people who are trying to ROOT and flash new ROMS are NOT using the wrong files and thus BRICKING there new toys!!!
Please ensure that you follow the steps / guides for the 3G units when ROOTING, FLASHING, etc and you will be fine (as long as you read the instructions and know what you are doing).
Please MOD... Make this STICKY!!!
Thanks...

Rogers has never ONLY called LTE as "4G", "4G" under the "older" definition as HSPA+, while LTE was called "beyond 4G". So there was no lie.
btw, if you are on "LTE", it would show "LTE" at the status bar. (as shown in Galaxy S 2 LTE, Galaxy Note LTE, and HTC Jetstream LTE). None of Rogers LTE devices were given naming convention with "4G" but "LTE"

According to International Telecommunication Union, HSPA+ is classified as 4G.

Hi there, not sure why you think the Galaxy Tab is not 4G. Mine states 4G when it's connected to the 4G network and I'm in Windsor where 4G has just been introduced and hopefully LTE, since my SGS II is LTE. Trust me I know how slow 3G is compared to 4G and this device is 4G. Maybe someone should do a speed test to show that it is in fact 4G or H+.
the galaxy tab doesn't have an LTE chip inside (unless you have a Verizon version). you're probably experiencing HSPA+, gdmuscle.

If you read my OP you will understand why I wrote it. TRUE 4G as I understand it is based on LTE however I do also know that here in Canada HSPA+ IS considered 4g as well which is weird and confusing.
Also... If you noticed in my OP you will see that I wanted to warn users about ROOTING and Flashing ROMS, etc as on the Rogers version of the GTAB we MUST use the 3G ROOT method and flash ROMS for the 3G version of the Tablet and NOT the 4G/LTE ROMS, etc or we will brick our devices.
The only 4G/LTE TAB on the market is the Verizon version. Our boxes, etc state 4G so I can see (and have seen some here) people getting confused and try to ROOT with the wrong method and flash the wrong ROMS.
I just want to make it clear and easy for people which is why I posted this thread.

Correction: The Current LTE being used was NOT considered 4g until they allowed HSPA+ and this current version of LTE to be considered 4g. Until then, LTE Advanced was the ONLY true 4g, which is not in deployed yet from what i understand.
So, based on the original rules, NOBODY ANYWHERE has a 4g tab 10.1. lmao!

There is no commercial "4g" networks anywhere; the wireless companies realized--or rather the marketers realized--you can't sell many devices branded "3.5g". Once one company started calling it 4g, all the others had to follow suit. Even LTE networks are actually 3g (or "3.5g"). Until they can get 1gbps stationary (or 100mbps non-stationary), none of them will actually be 4g; but I guarantee the marketers don't care about that... I'm guessing the tech will actually be "3g" for what the marketers will call "5g"... No big deal, it's just a name anyways. Also, if you think this is the most dishonest thing the marketers are pushing on you, well....

Hi All. Ive looked around but haven't seen a similar issue to mine, but it might not be a "bad" issue..not sure...here goes!
Samsung galaxy s4. Fido (Canada) so equivalent to the AT&T version.
The top of my S4 has what network i am on. Sometimes it says "3g", sometimes "h+" (i am guessing HSPA) and sometimes "4G" (i am guessing LTE but i am not certain)
Never does my phone give me an icon of "LTE", and i am in an LTE zone in Montreal. Ive done multiple speedtests, and when its on "4G" i get good speeds between 20 and 50 mbps down
My question : Is the S4 supposed to say "LTE" and i am not getting it for some reason?
Or
Does "4G" actually mean LTE?
If anyone knows or has experience in this i would really appreciate the help and clarification
ps. I just upgraded to an S4 from my 2009 Iphone 3gs, and im so happy

Ive looked around the forums and i beleive i have the correct APN (Fido LTE). Looking around other settings, under "network mode" the icon i have selected is "LTE/GSM/WCDA (auto connect)"
I guess now i am more at the stage of defining the various icons. Ive found many definitions on XDA but these definitions are all for various roms.
for instance:
Originally Posted by BNaughty http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31827119
AOSP ROMs will always be G, E, 3G, H, H+, 4G
G - GPRS
E - Edge
3G - 3G
H - 3.5G down
H+ - 3.5 G up/down
4G - LTE
in other pages ive seen H+ mean 4g, and LTE meaning LTE.
So a more specific question now.
According to Android 4.2.2 (android 4+ anyways, should be the same) with touchwiz, what do the icons correspond to?
According to the samsung SGH I337M manual:
E refers to connection/communication with the edge network.
3G refers to connection/communication with the UTMS network.
H+ refers to connection/communication with HSPA or HSPA + network.
LTE refers to connection/communication with an 4G LTE network.
Issue is that i get an icon that is not on this list. I get an icon that says simply "4G"
Not sure what this icon refers to..possibly LTE, possibly HSPA+? I called samsung canada, and they dont seem to know either...neither does fido, but im not surprised.
again if anyone knows, i would appreciate it
I have read a lot already on this site about my issue just wanted to clear up a few unanswered questions.
I am looking to switch from Verizon to t-mobile because of prices and terrible reception where I'm living in Riverside Ca. So I know that I can simply put in a t-mobile sim and change to the correct gsm settings and get cell reception (correct me if I'm wrong) but what about getting LTE from t-mobile? I have looked to see if the new 700 mhz band covers here and Ventura County Ca. (where I am when I'm not in Riverside) and it does so I should get LTE without having to put in a custom Rom, correct?
I'm a novice when coming to roms (plus a failed attempt) so i would like to avoid them as much as I can. Will do it if I have to though... All about saving $$$$
Thanks for the replies.
@mjmjpfaff
I know what your saying about saving $$$ phones these days are almost the half of a old car/price of a motorcycle.
If your Verizon phone is not simlocked and also has support for the LTE bands which T-Mobile is using then it's possible to get LTE working without the need to buy another phone. If it's mentioned on internet on multiple sites that the G2 supports that LTE band then you can get it without a custom rom.
In my eyes it's possible to have working LTE from T-Mobile on your verizon phone, but to be 100% sure I would contact Verizon support about your question.
I also had many fail attempts with custom roms first but after you get how it works, you can flash anything as smooth as butter:good:
you could also wait for a VS980 G2 user who had the same issue as you but I think that it would take you more time awaiting for a reaction from somebody since not many people are browsing the Q&A section.

I found this on another thread:
"I just switched from a Verizon Galaxy Note 2 to the G2 since all I can get from it with t-mobile is H+ speeds (about 4mbs-6mbs). I inserted the t-mobile sim into the verizon g2 and it automatically switched to global mode and I then went in to edit the apn settings to fast.t-mobile.com. 4G LTE is working just fine on stock rom kitkat update (I'm in L.A. suburb). Speeds range from 15mbs to 30mbs+ depending on where I am in the city. Here are some screenshots"
This guy is pretty much in my area and sounds like he did not do anything other switch in a t-mobile sim...

I'm using my droid mini on tmobile and am getting LTE speeds. You should see them if you're in an area where the network was refarmed to 1900mhz
Keep in mind the fastest speeds you will see is 21Mbps unless you swap for the Tmobile Verizon which goes up to 42Mbps and higher.

You're not getting LTE... 4G should be displayed for LTE.
Have you updated to 4.5.5 already? 4.5.4 was a fix for vodafone NL users with this exact problem.

Mine shown "LTE" for LTE, not 4G. I get the H+ when on HSPA+ (TMobile here, FTR).
I don't think I've ever seen "4G". Maybe it's because TMo has multiple technologies it markets as 4G, so it's ambiguous.
Koodo in Canada also displays 4G+ for LTE. But if on a Telus SIM (same network as Koodo) it shows up as LTE. Speeds are the same. Looks like the OnePlus database for carriers is not really up to date.

Yeah I just noticed that after all this searching around, WTF kind of dumb move is that to alienate all those version users like that. Smh the reason why I didn't even take the time out to see if my band was included before purchasing was because of the news the released about how much more LATE bands they were including with this model.
