Just switched from 3GS

Upon immediately turning on the device I'm overwhelmed. Everything is so open, so free, and I get a good signal everywhere I go. First thing I did was download advanced task killer and Facebook, but now I have no idea what to do except find a nice wallpaper and rearrange some widgets and icons. If I were to go with a 2.0 ROM, what are some outstanding differences compared to 1.5?

First, remove task killer. Android does it on its own, and if you root and load a rom I think most of them have an adjustable memory manager now hacked into the kernel.
Second, have fun.
Third, 2.1 isn't a HUGE deal over 1.5 just some new apps available in the market, multi-touch additions...over all feel is the same though.

2.1 also incorporates bluetooth file transfer and most the roms here have the option for live wallpapers, apps 2 sd, and 2 roms now allow overclocking.....super fast. Take the leap......root and enjoy 2.1 but please research, research, research.

Correction, 3 roms are overclocked But really, 2.1 is just better. I don't know really how to explain it. Better market app, better apps in market, and i've felt that it has been much more stable for me. With the exception of Gumbo 1.5c, I also felt that 1.5 roms were running a little slower for me...

I just switched from my 3GS about a month and a half ago, and I still have a hard time believing how open and free the OS is. That and the service (10 dropped calls a day ring a bell?) were the reasons I switched, besides getting on a Sprint Advantage Plan for $35 / month.
I think I had the phone for about 24 hours before rooting it. Once I did, I tried out some custom 1.5 roms, and they were pretty good.
Then I checked out Fresh 2.0d, which is 2.1 based, and thought... Hey, this is really cool! More app selections, better performance, etc.
Only recently did I decide that having Sense (All the pretty widgets and stuff) was unnecessary and took up too much memory. So I took the plunge into Fresh Toast 1.1, (Fresh 2.0d based) which not only has EXT4 support and overclocking (almost double stock speed) built into the kernel, but has the ability to use swap (virtual memory on your SD Card), JIT (just in time compiler, runs your kernel at a higher rate = faster process / compilation speed, about a 1.5 MFOPS increase... but it does kill sense) and A2SD (installing apps to an ext partition on your SD Card). I've got all these running, and my HTC Hero is now just as fast (most of the time) as my 3GS was.
Hope I was helpful, from one now-apple-hater to another.
PS - if youre hating Apple's closed source platform as much as me and have a personal vendetta (also like me) against them, you should check out this thread for some anti-apple bootscreens.

2.1 And It's Speed
W/ 2.1 you'll notice a huge jump in speed. You'll see transitions are a lot faster and smoother with a lot of apps opening quicker as well. Def something you should try out.

if you enjoy how open your phone is now just wait until you root your phone. superuser permission rocks. i love being able to open a terminal and see all of the stuff under the hood. rooting will give you a good recovery where you can easily back up your rom, try new roms and always be able to go back to the one you are most comfortable with.
also... wifi tethering rocks! favorite coffee shop doesnt have free wifi? no problem!

Hey all. I also just switched from my 3GS to the Hero a couple of days ago. I know that PPTP VPN support was intruduced with 2.1 but was wondering if anyone had actually tried it on cooked 2.1. Before the hero I tried the Samsung Moment and loaded a 2.1 ROM but VPN was broken.

I went from an iPhone to a Pre, and decided hey let me try Android 1.5 (this was way before the 2.1 leak) I absolutely hated it, I didn't like having 1 gmail account that would sync I wanted all of them. Multi-Touch, BT transfer, BT phonebook, Wi-Fi on while in Airplane mode(I really need this, and the apps out there don't work quite as well as it does in 2.1) and much much more. I really can't stand 1.5 or 1.6 for that matter. 2.0 and above for me.
If it wasn't for these leaks I'd still be rocking my Pre.

now that i have 2.1 on my phone im actually happier with its features than when it was 1.5.

For me, I just love the new market. For some reason, that's the only reason I like 1.6+ over 1.5-.

Roms and what makes them special.

Well i decided to make this thread has there seems to be numerous ROMs out there and they're suitable for different needs. I just wanted to know what you guys like about certain ROMs and what you think makes them the way you like it.
First ROM i used was ENERGY Mar 18th I think 23XXX for my Xperia X1
I found it to be a great Rom as my first. Except that it was too packed. Full of useless stuff that I didn't need. The ROM was fast but wasn't the most stable. Soft reseted probably once a day. Touch Flo wasn't really my favorite thing, it wasn't smooth and waste a fair amount of battery. Everything else seems to be alright.
Tried a few ROMs: x826, unOFF and Valkyrie
I didn't use this ROMs much, they seemed a bit choppy and wasn't really my taste. Valkyrie I used for a bit, no standby of death or anything and i thought it was better then ENERGY ROM.
Currently using Jack's Rom 5.4
This ROM would be my favourite overall by far. Its stable 21XXX and using Titaniums. It came with everything i needed especially the nice mapping of the XPANEL button to the menu (Of course you can do this to any ROM), but it was the first time i saw it so it was pretty cool haha. The ROM is stable as and i probably just soft reset the phone once a week just for a little new feel but its not really necessary. The phone battery can last me 3 days of usage using an hour a day for music, some web browsing and a lot messaging and a decent number of phone calls a day. The ROM is also very smooth.

Great post xxvelocityxx, but i have to say that 826X w/o sense is my personal fave. I get 2-4 days with constant texting. Also hero.

I use the ROM in my sig (click it to visit the thread), and I've found it to be more stable than the stock ROM Battery lasts 2, maybe 3 days of constant SMS usage, but then again it's also a year and a half old. The only problem I have with it is the increase of storage memory and decrease of program memory. Though I'm sure Adv Config could edit those to desired values I'm just lazy

Thumb's Up for Wildchild's untamed 1.3 ROM,it proven itself to be absolute rock solid for me!
Let's put it this way, I need a phone that is reliable to me, it should wake me up in the morning!So i really can't use those overnight freezes.
I need to be able to charge the phone whenever its needed without risking any unexpected SOD's.
I need it to have a fingerfriendly OS, so i really needed a WM6.5 rom.
with Htc SenseUI! All Sense2.5 Roms and most sense2.1 Rom's caused my phone to freeze while charging overnight, or leaving WIFI connected.
Flashing Wildchilds rom whas such a relieve(Winmo6.5+Sense2.1+SE Panels+plenty of storage to add whatever you like!)

Android experiences

I wil expose some experiences with froyostone 1.5 winmo 166 oficial and radio 11.50;
The most important point for me is the stability of the system, way more solid than winmo, and enought reason to mantain Android as primary os, tree days of non stop app installs it crashed once, beside that the system doesnt lose estability or speed with time like winmo.
The speed is quite fine, sometimes feels a litle jerky, just a litle, i have the sensation that it doesnt run at 100% fluidness but is is fast enought.
I had great specience with BT, on the car and reconection was super smooth, better than in winmo.
Bad things;
1.- screen freezes, for me thats the most important flaw, too many, too often, they solved with lock/unlock but are irritating, any advance in that issue?
2.-batery, it last less than winmo but for me is enought to daily use.
3.-thethering, it doesnt seem to work yet, another issue bur for daily use for my is not so important.
4.- some minor glitches, smooth problems wit browser etc, again are minor flaws.
Is there any place to see the advance in solving this issues, thanks.
pd. i´m convinced after traing android in hd2 that this system is the future, it seems that wil become the standard de facto mobile os, so it is very important to get a good port in hd2 to ensure the survival of the device.

Android Is so incredible to me. I see no limitations with it. I laugh when people brag about cht and say that its what makes winmo better. It does in fact make winmo better. Without it I couldnt tolerate it but personally I dont think that winmo is better
I like twitter for all my dev news. I was beside myself when i couldnt find a decent twitter widget to reside on my desktop. It seemed like a pain in the but to have to scroll all the way over to the twitter tab.
While android doesnt have the lovely cht I really dont think it needs it. I am also not a very big fan of the up and down scrolling.
I found myself missing the icons I had come to know on android. Winmo was very ugly I wont use any other rom other than Nrg's Dinik rom because it looks better than any other rom.
Apps arent that big of a deal to me. But the lack of apps drove me crazy It was like I didnt have very many options for anything.
While I think the people who still like winmo are crazy I can understand why.
I am very use to android its what i prefer and I am not good with change.
As soon as shubcraft came to the scene with cm6 I was hooked.
Tonight alone I tried like 3 different builds and reverted back to shubcraft 1.5
I see a lot of wah wah wah i wont try it till the bugs are worked out. Frankly I am just happy to have what we have now.
Overall android is a keeper on the hd2. It is my defacto Os even with the bugs.

Worth getting an HD2 for Android?

I've been looking for a new device for a while (my magic is pretty outdated), I was pretty set on a Nexus until I walked in to a Vodafone store to kill some time and played with an HD2. I really much prefer the form factor and having a massive screen.
Is there anything stopping any of you from using Android as your daily driver?
Looking at the release notes of most builds it seems that everything's working, correct? Are there any problems with playing media? It's not an issue if I have to boot in to WinMo for watching a movie or something, but I'd rather not do for music and youtube.

the battery drain with hd2 under android is pretty high.
with some builds the power doesnt even last a day..

Honestly... I love my HD2, but my answer will be "NO".
If the only thing you want is Android, get a native Android phone.

Now if you want the best of both worlds - WinMO AND Android - then the HD2 is the best choice, by very far, no other phone comes close.
This said, I'm using Android for daily use on my HD2 with this build:
Bangster 1.3 based on CyanogenMod 6.0.1
I just changed the settings back to 240 dpi, but it's the best I've tried so far, and everything works without a single crash for now. What's so great in this CyanogenMod based build is notably the build in graphic equalizer for all audio, something normal Android doesn't have. And fun thing, the equalizer/compressor/spacializer works better than the WinMO one.

Just have a little patience.the big event is tomorrow.HTC is presenting its upcoming handsets and HTC desire HD is one of them supposedly.

I use now android as my primary OS; i have small screen freezes (from 10 to 20sec) maybe once or twice a day but i can live with that! (winmo used to do worth )
Besides it has higher benchmark results than even Nexus one!
Ok it may not be as reliable as an native android phone but believe me it's really fast and smooth!

I've been using android on my HD2 for about 2 weeks now. Because i sit at a desk all day it's easy for me to keep the phone charged, but I can tell that battery drain would be an issue if I didnt have this luxury. The phone itself is a piece of art, and for me it's totally worth it to run android. The only issues i experience are the occasional screen freeze (the touchscreen stops responding, but buttons work. After about 10 seconds it responds again. Happens maybe 1-2x per day, livable) and I've had to reboot it about every other day to fix bluetooth hiccups and such. Im not a fan of having to reboot phones that much even though it's easy, but hey at least I get android right? Sometimes I just reboot it for no reason just to start the day off fresh.
Theres no other phone like this available other than a jailbroken EVO 4G, and even then you are carrier limited. I love getting 3.5G on my HD2, since I have t-mobile and therefore the phone is compatible with their network. I probably wouldnt want it so much if I could'nt access the cellular broadband network.

hey OP, i would tell you something! why would you buy a nearly one year old phone???? on top of that u know that it would not be supported for the new win 7 and android on it , well... it works but not how it should. i mean with its freezes and battery drain.
The best thing to do if you want an android phone is get an android phone!!!!!
you are tempted for a large screen, then wait for the htc desire hd (same as the evo). It is expected in the coming weeks ( before the end of the yr for sure).

I'm thinking giving Android a try... have you tried NRGZ28's Energy Android ROM over the New Nexus One Android 2.2 Build FRG3 you mentioned above?

If you like android, buy a native android phone. If you like windows and want the possibility to sometimes try out android, but the HD2. The android on HD2 is never going the be as smooth as a native phone. Period!

For the alarm (froyostone), did you have the "media" folder with all the ringtones and alarmtones in your sd card root?

I agree. Buy a native android phone. There are plenty out there.

In the US, if you are on Tmous, my humble belief is that HD2 is the best Android phone. Galaxy S is disappointing, and My touches, not so much. This could change, but right now I've been running Android exclusively. However, spend some time reading your particular android thread (several pages) so you get to understand the glitches and the workarounds. I've been running my setup now continuously for about 1 month, and will continue to update Android as it gets refreshed. The developers are fantastic in that thread, and the hardware is still some of the highest spec'd stuff out there.

Another thing is the price. I bet the DesireHD will be £400+. HD2 is around £200,might get the hd2 just because its so much cheaper

HD2 is far from the "best" Android phone available on TmoUS.
I have a Nexus one and an HD2...and my wife has the Vibrant. They all have their ups and downs...but I think once you throw LauncherPro and root/lag fix the Vibrant it completely smokes the HD2 in both fluid performance and visual display.
I still tinker with my Nexus...my G1 and my MT3G are retired permanently to the closet and I use my HD2 as my daily device running FroyoStone v1 and have not touched Winmo since the first stable desire build that darkstone made in early/mid July...I was one of the ones who bought my HD2 on launch day KNOWING that Android would come sooner than later, but if I had it to do again...I would have probably waited for the Vibrant to have a solid Android device.
As far as battery life...I can get a consistent 18 hour day out of my phone with 25-30% battery left with moderate usage...My HD2 gets much better battery performance than both my Nexus and my wifes Vibrant which have AMOLED and SAMOLED screens.
Now to answer your question...should you buy an HD2 for the sole purpose of running android as apposed to buying an Android phone?...If you like to tinker with gadgets and don’t get frustrated when things may not go right the first time or two...then by all means, get the HD2 and enjoy. If you want something that is going to give solid performance out of the box without any hassles...then go with the Vibrant and enjoy. I dont think you will be disappointed either way.

Or wait for the HTC vision aka g1 blaze

I have HD2 and Im running Android full time last week or so on this build. MCCM 1.5 build is based on FRG33 ROM (for nexus one) and I have outscored Nexus One 2.2 without overclocking CPU by at least 150-200 points on Quadrant. If overclocked I am hitting 1650-1700 easily where Nexus (non-clocked is) about 1250-1300 Quadrant scores.
I think it is worth of shot unless you simply want Android that updates itself instead of having Windows Mobile which you may not use.
FYI I prefer to have WinMo on the side as I have GarminXT - which I prefer over any navi over data on the Android OS.
I guess it is up to you and what really you want ... There is Galaxy with 4.0" screen with an Android OS which still works pretty good... Your choice...

[Q] Jumping over to the HD2

So I'm thinking about ditching my MyTouch Slide [Espresso] and jumping over to the HD2, since my friend did that a few months ago, and he's been experiencing nothing but good things, but I still have a few questions to ask the general Android HD2 community, since apparently the HD2 is more supported than the Nexus One.

How does the battery normally hold up? I know it depends on the rom [Sense drains battery like a *****, I know from personal experience], but I'm asking about generalities here. On light usage, does your phone last for 12 hours? 10?
What is still the most generally buggy feature on the HD2, regardless of ROM? Wifi? Bluetooth? Camera? In other words, what usually doesn't work and/or is the most buggy?
Do most market apps work for the HD2? Because I know certain apps are optimized for certain phones, and I'm wondering what apps usually work/don't work.
Is the touch screen REALLY that receptive? I hear that it's one of the best on any Android-running phone.
and finally...
What is the maximum STABLE overclock you can push onto the HD2?
Sorry for the tons and tons of questions. I just want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing before dropping $250 on a phone, lol.

Ok gonna do my best here. With wifi off I easily get 10+ with medium usage. Wifi, bluetooth, all work fine, still have data freezes using ppp but they getting to be few and far between. Still have touch screen freezes occasionally but you just wait a sec and all is well again. Touch screen us very responsive.. Every app I have tried has installed with no problems. My hd2 oc's stable to 1.113 ghz which is plenty for me, some will even go to 1.28 oc, just depends in the phone. Things are getting better every week of development. So in conclusion (never used a mt slide) if you can handle a strictly touch screen phone. And like to try new builds go for it.. I'm sure you won't be disappointed

What rom are you running?

Android: cmy's tmous blue topia. Winmo.. I don't remember, its a full rom with cht2.0...

Battery life for me is about 28-30 hours with average use (about an hour of calls, couple dozen emails, and an hour or so of music, 3G connected all the time, and about an hour browsing). Calibration is the key to getting good battery life. Even with heavy usage (3 hours calls, 2 hours music, Wifi connected four hours and heavy browsing and some gaming) My battery still lasts over 12 hours.
Most buggy... depends really on ROM. The build I'm using now (see sig) is [knock on wood] pretty flawless. I've not had an error in the three days I've been using it so far, but not everyone is as lucky as me. Your milage WILL vary. Some roms work perfect for some and are horrendous for others.
Again, I've not found an app that doesn't work yet. HD2 is a top of the line spec phone, so if something doesn't work on it, the app itself is usually at fault.
The touch screen is AMAZING, easily the best I've used and compares well to the Desire HD's screen.
Overclocking is pointless. End of story. You have a 1Ghz processor in the HD2, unless you're planning to take over the world why would you need anything more than that to play Angry Birds?

Quadrant scores are useless too. They really just measure how modified your kernel is to fit the test - it doesn't really translate to real life usage at all.
I have tried pretty much every build there is and I have settled on the CM6 builds being the most stable and smoothest. I started using Shubcraft(RMNET) in August and since then I tried out all kinds of Sense builds. After a day or two with the sense builds I always got tired of the lag that there is in sense, or other problems like the camera not working in some sense builds, or the PPP connection being so unstable.
I am now using Michyprima's daily CM6 build. It is very stable, I get through a day(8am-10pm) everyday even w/ pretty heavy use. My only complaint is that there are still TS freezes (even though I read they are supposed to be fixed), the PPP data connection freezes too frequently, and sometimes the screen takes a little while to wake up.
The phone is quite usable for day to day use, but it isn't free of bugs like your MT Slide is.

Free of bugs? Haha how funny. The Froyo Sense build I'm running has no keyboard lights, a few buttons don't work, and the browser force closes if java is enabled.

lol at the above. And just to reiterate, any and all benchmark scores are ultimately pointless. It's how it actually performs which only you can judge, not be told by a bunch of numbers which can be synthetically bumped up and still produce a competely unstable heap of poo.

I'm just letting you know that I have used my girlfriends mt slide, and it is less buggy than Android on the HD2. If you are complaining about the bugs in that phone then android on the HD2 isn't for you.

u can well notice the improvement in all programs that push the phone to its limits ie : gameloft games , pocket legends , browser with flash , homescreen smoothness(only with sense)
also , u know whats the difference between ati hd4870 and 4890 ? nothing , but the clockrate , try telling any1 who works with technology clockrate is pointless .. oh wait u already did

And you've been awarded the "I don't know jack about phones" prize too. I know full well that overclocking a processor increases cycles per second and overall throughput but that means absolutely nothing unless all you care about is benchmarks. I prefer to have a stable phone that doesn't reboot on me ever, and plays EVERYTHING ON THE MARKET perfectly, thanks. Go troll elsewhere. And maybe you should listen to the kernel devs who say overclocking is NOT necessary.
