Just switched from 3GS - Hero CDMA General

Upon immediately turning on the device I'm overwhelmed. Everything is so open, so free, and I get a good signal everywhere I go. First thing I did was download advanced task killer and Facebook, but now I have no idea what to do except find a nice wallpaper and rearrange some widgets and icons. If I were to go with a 2.0 ROM, what are some outstanding differences compared to 1.5?

First, remove task killer. Android does it on its own, and if you root and load a rom I think most of them have an adjustable memory manager now hacked into the kernel.
Second, have fun.
Third, 2.1 isn't a HUGE deal over 1.5 just some new apps available in the market, multi-touch additions...over all feel is the same though.

2.1 also incorporates bluetooth file transfer and most the roms here have the option for live wallpapers, apps 2 sd, and 2 roms now allow overclocking.....super fast. Take the leap......root and enjoy 2.1 but please research, research, research.

Correction, 3 roms are overclocked But really, 2.1 is just better. I don't know really how to explain it. Better market app, better apps in market, and i've felt that it has been much more stable for me. With the exception of Gumbo 1.5c, I also felt that 1.5 roms were running a little slower for me...

I just switched from my 3GS about a month and a half ago, and I still have a hard time believing how open and free the OS is. That and the service (10 dropped calls a day ring a bell?) were the reasons I switched, besides getting on a Sprint Advantage Plan for $35 / month.
I think I had the phone for about 24 hours before rooting it. Once I did, I tried out some custom 1.5 roms, and they were pretty good.
Then I checked out Fresh 2.0d, which is 2.1 based, and thought... Hey, this is really cool! More app selections, better performance, etc.
Only recently did I decide that having Sense (All the pretty widgets and stuff) was unnecessary and took up too much memory. So I took the plunge into Fresh Toast 1.1, (Fresh 2.0d based) which not only has EXT4 support and overclocking (almost double stock speed) built into the kernel, but has the ability to use swap (virtual memory on your SD Card), JIT (just in time compiler, runs your kernel at a higher rate = faster process / compilation speed, about a 1.5 MFOPS increase... but it does kill sense) and A2SD (installing apps to an ext partition on your SD Card). I've got all these running, and my HTC Hero is now just as fast (most of the time) as my 3GS was.
Hope I was helpful, from one now-apple-hater to another.
PS - if youre hating Apple's closed source platform as much as me and have a personal vendetta (also like me) against them, you should check out this thread for some anti-apple bootscreens.

2.1 And It's Speed
W/ 2.1 you'll notice a huge jump in speed. You'll see transitions are a lot faster and smoother with a lot of apps opening quicker as well. Def something you should try out.

go for root!
welcome to andriod!
if you enjoy how open your phone is now just wait until you root your phone. superuser permission rocks. i love being able to open a terminal and see all of the stuff under the hood. rooting will give you a good recovery where you can easily back up your rom, try new roms and always be able to go back to the one you are most comfortable with.
also... wifi tethering rocks! favorite coffee shop doesnt have free wifi? no problem!
cheers and best of luck!

Hey all. I also just switched from my 3GS to the Hero a couple of days ago. I know that PPTP VPN support was intruduced with 2.1 but was wondering if anyone had actually tried it on cooked 2.1. Before the hero I tried the Samsung Moment and loaded a 2.1 ROM but VPN was broken.

Happy Rooting! I second the WiFi tether. Greatest invention since sliced bread

WHAT!
I went from an iPhone to a Pre, and decided hey let me try Android 1.5 (this was way before the 2.1 leak) I absolutely hated it, I didn't like having 1 gmail account that would sync I wanted all of them. Multi-Touch, BT transfer, BT phonebook, Wi-Fi on while in Airplane mode(I really need this, and the apps out there don't work quite as well as it does in 2.1) and much much more. I really can't stand 1.5 or 1.6 for that matter. 2.0 and above for me.
If it wasn't for these leaks I'd still be rocking my Pre.

i agree with him
now that i have 2.1 on my phone im actually happier with its features than when it was 1.5.

For me, I just love the new market. For some reason, that's the only reason I like 1.6+ over 1.5-.

should I go Froyo???? with new memory

hi...
long story short...
my 8gb class 6 card was stolen.. have a 16gb class 6 coming at end of week. i was running DC2.1 last custom ROM. was also using apps2sd and it was working great!
question?
should I go ahead and get Froyo?
will its version of app2sd be as good as the 2.1 version? because with the efficient apps2sd on 2.1.. i am still pushing the limits of the memory.
who the hell steals sd cards?
Is there even a stable release of Froyo yet?

Stable, yes. Final, no.
Look in the dev forum for CM6 RC1.
@OP:
Yea, get Froyo.
I came from French Toast, and I thought that was fast. Froyo, no lie is lighting quick. The Apps to SD innate seem much better at handling it too.. but that's just what I think. Plus you can see what apps are on your SD card on the phone. I recommend it. Even though it's not final. everything I use the phone for works on froyo, including camera.
I'd definitely recommend using FroYo... it's ridiculously fast, gets good battery life, and you get access to new apps like Voice Actions.
I have a 16g class 6 and i am running the current build of cm6 for the hero. I haven't had a single issue. its fast thank you devs
so yea get froyo.
thanks everyone... i guess I will give Froyo a try..
does it fix the phone lag... staring calls?
Haven't had any problems. Another bonus is that Froyo takes about half the space of 2.1 with Sense.
Is there a froyo with sense? I need it for HTC sync for use with outlook 2010. Also, why do people make up such crazy names for ROMS? I spend too much time trying to figure out what it is, and who made it, what version it is, do all the features work, what radio am I supposed to use. Isn't there a way to simplify this?
the froyo rom here is cyanogenmod6 its named after the cyanogen and is the sixth version of the multi platform android rom he and his team have put out. I do agree that some of the rom names are downright ridiculous and the word art junk I've seen for some of them just seems really lame and immature (think high school class projects with crap word art thrown in)
NO there is no sense 2.2 rom and there may or may not ever be one. Also before it gets asked in this thread, NO CM6 DOES NOT HAVE FLASH!
why are you syncing your phone to outlook? both outlook and the phone should sync to your calandar and email provider, your doing it kinda backwards. outlook is a client, and the phone is a client. why sync one client to another instead of syncing both clients directly to the service provider?
O/T but outlook is a terrible email client, bloated as hell and poorly written. I wouldn't recommend anyone use it unless they have a need to talk to an exchange server.

Everything works yes but it is NOT lightning quick, even with the same 730mhz. 2.1 was ALOT faster

Nope along with performance my battery life is alot worse
Don't get me wrong it is VERY stable for what it is (the only issue being the LEDs being messed up which there's a fix for) but 2.1 was alot faster for me. My GBA emulator is really laggy and useless with 2.2

The cm6 build is good but Ive gone back to fresh. The a2sd isnt as good imo as darks however you can integrate a2sd into cm6 and bypass the froyo version. Battery life was pretty random for me. I caibrated my battery and one use I got about 7 hours of streaming slacker over wifi and using a bluetooth headset to listen. Recharged and the next go around I gout 4 1/2 hours. personally 7 hours of that kind of use is damn good for me but 4 1/2 is a drastic drop. I didnt like the fact that it was ran at 691, I think my phone runs better running around 600. Above that and it can get a bit jumpy (oc widget and setcpu wouldnt maintain a frequency and the battery fix was too involved for my liking). Also I started getting a ton of FC's in launcherpro and the browser.
That being said, I made a nandroid so I can go back to it if I like but for now Im sticking with fresh's rom. The only feature I would like is the new google voice search but I rarely use voice functions anyways.
Edit: Scratch that, I loaded the updated nightly build and alot of my issues seem to be gone and OC Widget is holding at 576 so Im calibrating the battery and gonna test again.
I cannot believe I havent fried this phone after the amount of flashing and crap Ive done on it.

That. =P
I'm also in the process of calibrating the battery as my CM6 battery performance compared to Fresh 2.3.3 was pretty abysmal, but if it's NOT lightning quick, you're doing it wrong.
(CM6 is f-f-ffAST! Using the decad3nce #7 8/18 uncapped kernel currently, but even the included kernel was perfection)
hi all...
i tried to flash this blue rom...
it did not work.
I lost my SD card. got a replacement 16gb class6.
I also have an old 1gb class2.
i have been rooted since I got the phone in Dec and have flashed many ROMs with no issues. I was last on DC 2.1 custom Rom.
it just gets stuck in "HTC" splash screen. wait 15-30 mins. never comes out. here is what I have done...
each time i wipe the data and Dalvik.
flash the 2.2 ROM.
both from the 1gb and the 16gb.
just stuck in the black screen "htc"
what do I need to do?

Why would you chose Official 2.2 over Azure 2.2 or other 2.2 ??

EDIT: I can't edit the thread title, but I meant "Official Sense 2.2" ...and also "choose" not "chose" .
Hi all,
Now that you can grab the official 2.2 ROM (thanks devs!!), what would you class the main reasons for running it, over something like Azure, which we've had for some time?
Please list your reasons here, as I really can't see the need to change from Azure?! This is what I can think of...
- For Sense
- For Radio (FM, etc)
- For working WiFi
Root can void warranty?

During the last month and a half I have used Azure, CM nighlies and CM 6.1 RC1. Today I flashed the official 2.2 ROM update. I was very impressed by CM because of its speed and smoothness, especially CM 6.1RC1. The benchmark tests give almost identical results. Having in mind that CM is using the old .29 kernel I think it will get higher performance levels with the new .32 kernel. The only things I really miss on CM is the Sense dialer and the Sense weather widget. I really cannot tell which is better. The more ROMs available the better! I think it will be great if someone could implement dual-boot for the Legend
The obvious one being sense - I love it.
Working FM Radio, GPS, and Bluetooth (unlike most custom 2.2's I've used recently)
Working Market Place
Live wallpapers as standard
Better Radio (improved reception and wifi)
Ability to move programs to SD card without reformatting (a2sd)
Oh and the only program I used to root for is already built in - Flashlight! - its much better than any variants I've used before (3 light brightness settings etc).
oh and more HTC sensey widgets available too and WIFI hotspot program built in as standard
and I prefer the standard HTC keyboard instead of the bogstandard android one
Freedom of choice, ain't it great!
I like sense, I like not having to reformat my sd card to move apps. I tried launcher pro plus (bought it) and adw, bought beautiful widgets expecting more from it but was disappointed.

Couldn't agree more. Also, having your wifi work is kinda nice.
Wifi is working loads better now, the new drivers are awesome.
I am actually not that impressed with the 2.2 update but I wasn`t expecting too much either.
The WiFi reception is great of course and a major plus. The camera is also very smooth and overall speed is superior to the old kernel. The list of official Froyo only features I need ends here though.
On the other hand...
- I don't mind reformating my SD Card to use App2SD
- I am not enough into FB or Twitter to "need" the Sense widgets
- Never used the FM radio before rooting and probably never will
- Already replaced the official keyboard with SlideIt
- I really hate not being able to clean up my app drawer
- The Froyo dock is ugly and lacks usability. LauncherPro and ADW are way better.
- I have freshly cleaned windows and my neck is flexible enough to check the weather myself. If I am already standing outside in the rain, I don't need my phone to tell me that my haircut is in danger.
- The flip clock is way too dominant for my taste. I prefer TypoClock's purity
- Pure Calendar Widget > HTC Calendar Widget
- Barnacle Wifi Tether works just fine. No urgent neccessity for the the official Hotspot feature. Other then that I don't mind using the USB cable to tether if I am already carrying the laptop with me. Wouldn't know who else to tether for anyways.
- No homescreen rotation with the official ROM
- I don't need 3 different settings for the flashlight. The one coming with Cyanogen is good enough. Just let there be light.
- CyanogenMod can be customized and has a lot of useful setting that you can't change with the official Froyo
Of course I am happy that we finally received the update but only to see the new kernel and radio (and maybe some other Froyo goodies) in one of the next CM releases.

-Offcial = stable. There will be no "not working/won't fix" list. It uses newest drivers, CM is still far behind.
-Everything in Sense is chained : Contacts ~ Facebook/Twitter/Flickr ~ Gallery ~ Calendar/Agenda ~ Clock/Weather
- Official Froyo Quadrant's pts = Azure's pts (800~900)
- And ofcourse, the infamous FM Radio rocks!
My biggest reason to use an official is Sense. I love the Clock widgets because I have several timezones to keep track of, and I love them to all be visible on my first home screen. I can see the time where I am in the status bar, my home in the USA, and for my girlfriend in Qatar. I could never find another app as good as HTC's clock when I was using CM-based ROMs.
The fact that whitetigerdk and Paul had the official ROM rooted in less than 24 hours after release gave me no reason not to move from Gratiend.
I like the stock ROM for few things. Have currently loaded Vodafone based ROM and no issues so far.
- Stable exchange connectivity (email APK in other custom ROMS stops working after couple of send/receive (push) - have tried almost everything. Maybe MoDoCo rom was kind of stable, but again it was based on the stock ROM.
- Wi-Fi tethering is perfect
- FM Radio
Finnally a stable and official rom
Yeah the main thing for me was getting exchange email working nicely.
Push mail (exchange) working fine on you guys' official froyo? I still find CM RC1 email apps to be better for my exchange push mail.
And actually one of the thing I missed the most from RC1 is notification power widget.
Official v.s. Custom
Hi,
I enjoy using the official rom because the GPS, FM Radio, Bluetooth, Wifi work. I use the FM Radio quite often. I prefer sense of the stock interface, everything just works nicely and fits in perfectly.
Regards
Remeez
My answer is short and simple: i won't switch to stock Froyo ROM no mather what happens
Now i'm running CM6.1 RC and extremely satisfied with. The only thing i'm missing is flash support.

I realised that stock HTC rom is better.
Androot STILL WORKS for softroots and give me the flexibility to do all i need to do with root access. (take snaps, clean cache, titanium backup, etc).
So while my country hasn't actually received the updates, i am looking forward to it.
True right now stock Froyo might be better. But when the cyanogenmod guys release gingerbread, that would be better.
The thing is that developers are always faster than HTC. Plus this might be the last update from HTC. Then stock will be far less than good enough.

Your speech sounds like pro linuxers over everything... maybe you don't need any goodies in your
Phone, so please buy a 3210 nokia then... weather in time widget is fun, useful sometimes and why not, we love to see our phones doing some eye candy. The way everything is linked is simply amazing... and maybe you don't use any social features.... but today people who want a smarphone is for social uses mainly.
Maybe a cell phone doesn't need radio feature 'per se ' but if the phone has, a why don't use it?? I'm sure more people than you think buy this phone because the radio....
Since I have my legend i install every rom was released and I loved them, but sense interface even tough if it swallow a lot of resources is a very good interface for a cell phone and it's copied in a lot of apps or widgets.... maybe your intention is not to be rude but you sound soooo rough....

[POLL] Which gsm hero rom is running on your phone?

[POLL] Which gsm hero rom is CURRENTLY running on your phone?
Choose one and we'll see what's going on in the world of our little gsm heros.
I don't see a poll like this for gsm hero - certainly nothing with current roms.
Good idea for a poll! I too would like to know what is happening with our little Hero(s).
thanks
I decided to limit to only one answer, what's running right now, since many of us nandroid and flash regularly we could end up with the 5 or 6 most obvious answers all being voted for by everyone. to me that's just silly.
at least this is scientific: if not absolutely indicative of everyone's favorite rom, at least it's indicative of the current choice.
Could be used for a trend chart if in the future we do the same poll again and compare results.

wow hahaha reload first page of gsm hero development forum and every rom thread's most recent post is my link to this poll.
I wanted to be fair so tried to post the link for every rom that is getting current thread discussion.
but no posts there after my posts, even after 15 minutes or so - I suppose everyone's here voting.
pretty much the results I expected aside from the mass of gb users!
surprising about rcmix and tegro - I know of some users of those roms currently.
wow - you VR12 guys - you could consider backing up (using nandroid) and trying out RCmix or tegro. they're both much newer versions of sense roms that are quicker in some ways and also offer newer nicer features (newer widgets and other good things). but good that you're happy with vr12 still
Cheers

Hey dkelley, long time no speak (again)
Interesting you mentioned VR12... I have been looking into security of the Android platform, and I would strongly recommend people move off Sense-based ROMs, and onto a Froyo custom ROM for now...
I am not at liberty to give details of the exploit (and I don't have full details), given most non-custom ROM devices will sit for the rest of their lives, vulnerable to this, but I understand that the 2.1 ROMs have some pretty serious security holes in the browser system, which appear to be better in the last set of sources I pulled from CM on the froyo tree (for FroydVillain 1.7.x)
So while it's interesting to see people still using VR12, I would suggest everyone on a Sense-based ROM moves to a "proper" 2.2 vanilla ROM. I don't think a Sense UI 2.2 ROM would be safe, so I'd discourage those too. It appears you need something CM based, and pretty recent.
As such, I would urge anyone using older CM-based ROMs (say from before November or October) to upgrade if they are concerned about security while surfing the internet. HTC don't seem to be interested in fixing the vulnerability, but I checked FV 1.7 and it is not vulnerable to this one attack.
If you support the idea of HTC being pressed into updating their phones (remember that EVERY user of the Hero, who isn't on a custom ROM, is vulnerable to any security exploits, which will not be fixed unless they do an update), then check out http://bit.ly/fDGHPV, where I am trying to get some support together before I contact HTC and mobile carriers.
PS Don, I seem to have derailed this a bit... Figured it was perhaps best to post this in here, since there's no point in making a new thread that we want to get many people to do, and you already did the "donkey work" so to speak. If this derails the thread, I'll sweep it out into another thread if you want

Interesting, and a little scary, what you're saying.
But being the scientific (and slightly cynical) type I tend not to believe anything without either proof or at least further information.
I'll read up on it some - but can you summarize the possible type of damage? such as gathering of private data by parties who know about the exploit? or damage to the phone via intentional cause (again by parties in the know)? or what

I went back to Cronosproject 1.7.2 from gb beta 6. Even the massive headway they made thus far has been awesome with Fee and Ele together I can't see how it can be made as good as 1.7.2. Its way behind on performance and hogs memory with the minimum system and regular apps installed. The battery seems awesome but not much in there to use it. I'll wait till full release or stick with this rom. I can have a desire on wife's upgrade but I fancy something more now.desire is very quick.

I can have a desire on wife's upgrade but I fancy something more now.desire is very quick.

agreed but give it time, and disagreed about "hogs memory": using the available memory like crazy is done to speed up performance, it's not hogging anything in a bad way. when something else requests memory that memory is freed up.
gb's memory manager is years ahead of it's predecessors
but yea, it will take a while.
Note - it's at 0.0.7 now and has everything working except camera which they're working on. performance is always improving, all sensors work now, and it's pretty amazing.
I just need a more stable build for now dude. Grafix and app issues made me revert. I'm sure with input on Cronus now they will make it much better. They need to get used to each others methods of building. I love it on there and not many will give it the dedication that Feeyo puts in. Ele is not dissimilar so expect great things. The futures bright

agreed. was just correcting you about the memory hogging thing since it's a good thing not a bad thing.
edit: well, not agreed about stability LoL. sorry I keep doing that . I'm running it and have for days and it's super stable. gui speed has improved a ton now too. you wouldn't know you were in such a new rom if you tried it on my phone cuz I disabled the animatinos etc very carefully in various settings places and use LP and so on.
BUT for me the fastest rom is still cronos eclair lite - it's gui, with LP, is noticeably faster than with other roms. If only it wasn't 2.1 based (with it's EXCEPTIONALLY slow and crappy applications manager and so on).

I just had fc's with too many things. Neo, quad, then regular apps and no market. With minimal apps it was slowing right down. I figured that no matter how good the memory allocation manager if you don't have the physical memory the manager can't work right. I'll wait. Do you have basics like market working?
I never had any kind of lag with 1.7.2. The GUI is awesome. It benches close to the desire.

everything's workign perfectly, no FCs, market's been fine for several versions now for most of us. everything except camera apps and certain specific graphics apps work great now.
neocore's broken, doesn't matter of course, same with quad, it's not relevant to anything. They're apps designed for certain operating system versions and hardware and the hero running gb doesn't fit the bill. those are are irrelevant apps that can be dismissed.
I play lots of games and they're working just great. all productivity and utility apps are great.
audio and multimedia stuff are fine too. not really sure where you were getting FCs but it sounds like it needed a new wipe and reflash possibly.
but then there's that strange thing were not every rom works on everyone's hero - I'll never know why, but I swear it's true
apps2sd and so on are working now (with a patch from elelinux). there's something that's slowing down the gui and animations still, and I accidentally had my gb phone running super fast in those areas when my app2sd flash borked. So I know a solution is possible to that last little bit of performance...

Weird dude. I haven't had time to go through the thread but I will now and go again. I could swear I full factory reset and wiped everything.
I had a long week with kids but thanks, I wondered why it was so bad.... but it wasn't! And no mention of my probs!

haha - well hopefully it'll work better for you now than it did before. you will find slow gui screen animations at times though so it's worth disabling all of that and using launcherpro (if you can find launcherpro anywhere considering fede's rather frustrating emergency issue at the moment).
My launcher pro plus backup will work wont it?

Is anyone impressed with froyo so far?

I think having flash is cool. Doesn't seem as good to me as the oc'ed dl09 blackhole I was running before. Seems glitchy and temperamental. I haven't run one rom for a few days to let things settle in but that's because it just isn't doing it for me yet.
Maybe when the kinks are worked out and there is an overclocked voodoo option it will be more to my liking.
Some of the controls do not seem as intuitive either such as settings that have to be activated through an action or haptic having to be turned on but vibration intensity set to zero to turn it off when typing in different apps.
I see why verizon and samsung don't throw it on the market as is.

Im running Rubik's and am extremely impressed. I feel like it does everything faster. Only thing I find that has taken a step backwards is the web browser. It seems a little slower and doesn't autosize websites when I double tap.
Really that's my only thing ... I'm not seeing a lot of the bugs that have been reported by users.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
i second the rubik's post. but alltogether, froyo is kind of...
lame. everyone said we shouldn't get our panties in a bunch over it. and they were right. it seems to cause just about as many problems as it fixed.
so again, i guess we go back to hating samsung code dev. why can't this just be a google native phone? when android started that was the idea right?
(of course this is most likely due to the difference in hardware, but its still fun to blame samsung).
I actually find the browser to definitely load sites a bit faster than Eclair's -- which should be expected since a browser performance boost is one of Froyo's top-billed features.
That said, I think people need to remember that this (DL30) is almost certainly not a release that will ever see the official light of day. Simply put, we're running a leak that was never supposed to get out. There are obvious bugs (like long-pressing search) and quite likely more than a few non-obvious bugs too. Heck, Droid Life already has pictures of a newer Froyo ROM with all the expected Verizon bloatware (Blockbuster, Bing, etc.), so that just adds support to the idea that DL30 simply isn't ready for primetime.
But I do have to say this: whether on stock Android or not, Froyo does offer a measurable performance boost over Eclair. Anyone who says otherwise really should take a look at the benchmarks performed by quite literally every major tech blog and news site out there. Of course it's not like getting a new phone, but it truly is a noticeable speed boost. So why aren't we seeing much if anything noticeable now? That should be obvious: bloatware aside, once again, we're simply running an unfinished ROM.
Froyo is great. Please don't complain about it. People worked hard for this. We don't need your discouragement, this will develope more, just give it time

The wait for Froyo's feature set was for me, secondary to the wait for the development boost. The guys on our forum do great things, but noone wants to be working with 2.1.
This brings us to the proper foundation to build from.

It's OK.
It only confirmed what i already knew. That our XDA developers are the true innovators and the only ROMS i care about are theirs.
I was one of those that frequently said Froyo was not a big deal. I installed it, and my thoughts are mixed.
Was it worth the wait? well there are things that i liked and things not to like.
Here's what i liked. For starters, I have a galaxy tab and when i installed my games onto my Fascinate they didn't work. I suspected it was because of Froyo 2.2. I was right. They all came to life on Froyo. Pocket legends HD is spectacular. I also am able to use Kongregate now as well as Hulu (with mod). The email reader was slicker and the facebook integration smoother.
Here's what i disliked. While i've had no bugs (i re-installed a stock image first), it is slower, less bells and whistles than my previously fabulous Custom Rom's and themes. and of course back to bloated touchwiz junk. I did put adw, but it still seems slower than before. Most of the upgrades were under the hood and to be honest i never really felt them.
I miss my custom themes, but for now i'll keep this froyo and wait for themes ported to it to give it my final opinion.
Froyo delivered what I wanted it to deliver:
- A GMail app that has almost all of the features I need
- A contact list that sorts by last name
- The ability to move apps to my SD card
- Fully functioning Flash
I am happy....
Slower then my dj05....period.

According to quadrant...I'm running 115mhz slower on dl30 with a decrease of about 3 mflops...so I'd say it is not faster. It's actually very...apparent
Overall, I'm happy with it. Selecting text and cut/copy/paste is vastly improved, it's got built-in screen capture, better multitouch, better g-mail client and I can now use the full Skype app.
The little glitches need to be accepted in so far as we *are* using a leak. There are reasons Verizon hasn't released this yet, and chances are, these are those reasons.
so far I'm loving the 2.2 leak. Working great.

Moving apps to SD card
is there are ROM that has this feature included?
Right now everything is definitely faster than my completely stock fascinate. The only thing that doesn't work is the included email and Google maps and navigation which is a little annoying
Are you kidding? Flash, new Gmail, sort contacts, add ringtones without having to create a phone contact, and Chrome to Phone. I can't tell you how often I use Chrome to Phone. Anytime I need to install a zip, I just send it right to my phone. Overall, I have to say 2.2 is a very nice improvement over 2.1.
For me, the DL09 w/voodoo was the best overall Fascinate experience... but coming from a Froyo'd OG Droid... I really missed Chrome to Phone and Flash... so that's why I am running DL30.
What I am hoping for? DL09 Voodoo performance with DL30 features... I am gonna stick with DL30 for now (as switching back from DL09 Voodoo bricked my phone) and hope that we can get Voodoo like performance soon enough...
def
I did the stock (rooted) leak and then went to Superclean for Froyo. Superclean can be modded with blackhole elements and other tweaks you can find in the forum. Bottom line? I get faster performance and less lag. The browser works faster and it is a cleaner integration. My only issue now is battery life. I was getting very good battery life with my old setup. So I wiped bat stats, reinstalled clean after wiping everything, etc. and it still doesn't seem right. When I check usage it seems to overly point out display (like 95% of battery usage). I'm not sure what's going on but I'm up to about nine hours of battery life so it's good enough. I'm hoping some of these things will get resolved as time goes by. Any wisdom, let me know. Overall, froyo works well and will only get better.
One note. I was noticing the browser issue as well. Go to the settings in the browser and that will take care of it. Apparently "resize" isn't the default as it should be.
The Froyo Gmail app allows me to send outbound mail from all the addresses I have set up in my Gmail account - a significant improvement from the pre-Froyo version which only sends outbound mail from your main Gmail address.

The stock ROM has it. You need to go to Settings / Applications / Manage Applications. Click on the app you want to move. If the app supports moving, the "Move to SD card" button will be active. Just press that button.
Now that I have Blackhole 4.1 the experience is getting better. Seems to be running smoother.
Can't wait for voodoo and oc'ed kernels.

New to droid X and Wanna root....HELP!

I have had probably 8-12 Android handsets. I recently switched to an iPhone from my EVO and I hated my iPhone. I wanted to go with something pretty similar to my EVO so I checked out the screen, specs, user reviews, etc. The Droid X sounded great, but since having it, it locks up, freezes, and Lags like a G1. This NOTHING like my EVO and is disappointing to say the least.
I'm really hoping that a custom ROM can speed up the interface and possibly help with the battery life. Any recommendations? I don't want to theme, or skin...no interest in changing the bootlogo, etc... I just want a nice and FAST phone.
I use a lot of apps...I DON'T let any apps refresh automatically though. I also use Launcher Pro. Thanks in advance.
(Please don't tell me to read the sticky. I have. I need some real life experienced reviews....maybe people who have had an EVO or who understand what I want. Thanks)

LMFAO, i wrote the sticky, which has instructions on how to root and while I havent had the time to update everything I did cover some ROMs which include what you have asked for, so not quite sure what else you could be looking for.... But if you really want an explanation:
Root the phone using z4root and then try out a ROM like Rubix Focused 2.0.1. Drod2169 built the ROM and I am currently using it. The interface is very quick and responsive. He has added in multiple governor settings for overclock which include a conservative governor to allow for better battery life. You can use apps like Droid Overclock (jrummy16) and setCPU to change these governor settings as well. Rubix does very well when overclocked if that is something you are interested in.
If you are looking for a ROM that still has some Blur components in it, then try out Apex 1.4.1 or Rubix 2.0 Blurry. Both are very responsive and have some of the blur that certain people out there are looking for. Last but not least, it seems a great majority of people like Liberty 1.5. I used the ROM for quite some time, and it is very responsive, but a lot of people seem to have issues with lag or reboots. I never had this issue, so I can't quite speak to that issue...
ROM's are really more of a matter of personal choice. Try out a few and see what you like.
As far as a comparison to the EVO... my roommate has one, and 2 of my other best friends have one. I have done MULTIPLE benchmarking tools on their phones to compare against my X (on multiple ROMs). None of their tests have beat mine... In my opinion, the only differences between the EVO and the X is this:
1) Evo has unlocked Bootloader to allow custom kernels so you can run ROMS like CynanogenMod (but given time, CVPCS is compiling CM for the X)
2) Evo has front facing camera for those who can't wait to talk to people via a webcam.
3) Evo has a slightly quicker GPU (graphics processing unit) than the X, but winds up limited to 30FPS for the most part. Some of the benchmarks I have seen on the X jump it up to 62FPS on tests I have run.
4) Evo runs sense from HTC. If you want a "Sense" feel... some have made themes that look just like Sense....but you said you don't want a theme.
That's about it...

The sticky is EPIC...honestly, it's just data and info. I guess I am looking more for opinions. Thank you for the insight.
I had an EVO and that thing had not once, ever, locked up or froze. 2nd day on my Droid X after a hard reset and it is SO laggy.
Unlock screen even lags to get to home. IDK.... I def don't want the "blurware", but the benchmarks on this phone are impressive. It's response and use have not been, in my opinion.
My wife has the Samsung Vibrant and the specs are amazing for that phone too, but NEVER have I seen a phone lock up and freeze so much. She gave her old G1 to my mom and it's like they run at about the same speed.
I'm real tech savy, a huge phone nerd, etc....I just really didn't like my iPhone. I use Apple products for everything else as I am an audio engineer by profession, but the iPhone was SO limited. I had to hack the crap out of it to get basic things that are available on freebie candybar phones.
One thing I have noticed is that it seems to build my photo cache REALLY slow. Now... I have 14 GBs of photo/video on their, but everytime I open a gallery it takes forever to load. It is getting better about this, slowly but surely....do you think my unit is defective, I am expecting too much, or the more I play with it and let it buld a good cache, etc, it will run better?
Thanks for responding, and THANK YOU for the sticky... If I decide to root that thing will be a lifesaver!

I think the type of sdcard you have also makes a difference. If you have a new class 6 card instead of what the phone comes with (I think it is like class 2 or 3) then the read/write speed should be a lot better. I have been using the latest Rubix ROM for about 2 weeks now, and I don't experience any lag or reboots/freezing. I really like this ROM, and actually talk to Drod2169 (the developer) a decent amount. I would take a look at Rubix or Fission 2.5.7 as these are both blur-free ROM's.
I am also a huge tech nerd/geek. I have tweaked the crap out of my X. I have probably tried every ROM/theme there is for this thing, and right now I'm sitting solid on Rubix. I also used Darkslide 4.2 Blurless for a while. It is a ROM built by BBCrackman and some others over at mydroidworld. I would suggest trying Darkslide out. It is pre-themed by the makers of the ROM but I think it has been the most reliable and snappy ROM I have used besides Rubix 2.0.
If you have questions, shoot them at me in here, or hit me up on gchat.
