[RADIO] no/bad radio signal aaaargh - HD2 General

the problem i have, is that my phone loses signal every once in a while. I get between 4 and 0 signal bars, changing all the time, while I sit still in the living room So often I have no reception for text messages or calls.
it seems that winmo uses so much CPU power for certain background tasks, that the signal quality suffers, or even loses signal. When starting a call, or sending an sms, the signal bars drop like led.
what can I can do? getting desperate here... I even tried holding the phone upside down, thus not touching the antenna. Pharaday effect is known, but phone quality is only marginally better outside. Tried all radios on the forum, and several different flavours ROM, including a stock one
is there a software tool, that displays exact radio signal strength, instead of the bars on top?

i have very bad signal if i sit or stand under or next to METAL roof around my house, but i have a very good signal outside my house. Sometimes i am not able to receive a call when making a call from home phone. Since you have all radios in here, i don't know which radio to suggest. FYI, I am using 2.08.50.08_2 radio and it gives me better signal.

that's Pharaday's Cage effect. that is not what I have. HD2 cpu power is having an effect on the radio signal strength (bg processes probably)

If other people with non-HD2 phones have the same problems, the problem may not be your HD2, but consider you have weak signal strength from your provider. This happened in my previous appartment where I had to stay in the kitchen if I wanted to make a phone call.
What radio ROM do you use ? I had some problems too in the past. Now with radio ROM 2.10.50.26 I don't have these problems anymore.
But in the meanwhile I never went back to a stock ROM either so my next question is : what ROM do you use ? I don't have any of these problems with Laurentius26 or CleanEX ROMs since I use the 2.10.50.26 radio ROM.

hej, 2.10.50.26 was the last one I used, when i decided to go "back" to the official ROM in Denmark and that one came with radio 2.06.51.07.
I used primarily Miri's ROM, but I switched to Artemis (did of course a task29 after the stock ROM); Artemis tests on radio 2.06 instead of 2.10. My theory was/is that a windows ROM should fit with radio ROM. But so far, not noticeably better.
REQ: still looking for a tool that monitors (and logs?) signal strength, so I do some tests. anyone?

I just found this post by tokolosh in an EnergROM thead
Q: Which is the best Radio to use with EnergyRoms ...... ?
A: There is no "Best" Radio, they seem to be Location and Preference dependant. Some have better Recetion but poor battery life and vicaversa. Try out the "big 4" to see which works best for you (2.(07/08/09/10).50.xx_xx) just make sure it is a 50 and not a 51 version --> example 2.07.50.xx is good but 2.07.51.xx is not

Anyone smarter than me who can explain WHY the 51 is not good? (googled for answer but no luck...)

how much does a rom affect reception?

something that has been bugging me a bit lately is that when it comes to downloading or anything other than general phone calls, my phone signal does not seem to be as strong as it used to be.
i used to get H all the time for my phone signal. then i went to a different rom and it changed to 3G. (which i think is normal?)
but now it mostly seems to be sitting on just G.
the only things that have changed has been the rom (currently using enomther's the official), the recovery (ra's 1.2.1 or something) and the spl (1.33.2004 engineering).
i thought the signal would be affected more by changes to the radio. is that right? or does the rom and the spl also have an affect?
no comments?
I really don't know, and maybe other members don't know, hence the no comments.
If it's sitting on G, did you check if the "Always use 2G Networks" is enabled? But you could also take a look inside the framework (unzip it) of the rom and check what icons they have. Perhaps there is that slight possibility that they don't have icons for 3G! I don't know! (I highly doubt that would help though lol) I think radio has an effect on things like GPS but yeah. Not too sure about the reception but to be honest, I dont think a rom affects reception.
I would recommend a speed test though!

Canadian users - which radio?

Hello,
I am in canada on fido wireless.
I wanted to know, who else use the phone in canada and which radio version you use.
I feel my battery really drains fast... and dunno why?
I am using the 1.17 radio version.
It could be a bunch of things causing your battery to drain fast.
It could be your screen, perhaps your phone is waking up in your pocket or case (sometimes volume keys will wake up phone, perhaps power button is jostled), do you lock your phone?
Regarding the radio:
How is your reception with that radio?
You say you're on Fido, what city?
Do find yourself in more dead spots than usual? Do you find you miss calls? I've heard some people say their phone feels warm when making calls.
Also, what Rilphone.dll are you using? Reading the 1.17 thread it seems people get good results with the 1.15 rilphone.
Personally, I tried a ROM with that radio and I had poor result. Could have been the ROM, could have been my rilphone, but I was scared away from 1.17.
I've been using 1.14.25.24, on Fido, in Greater Vancouver. I find that it doesn't connect sometimes and I hit lots of dead spots (I've never had a phone that didn't work in my elevator before this one).
Recently I was in Port Coquitlam and it spent the day trying to connect to the network. First time I had my battery go so quick.
Myself, I'd choose reception over battery life.
I am in toronto.
Reception has been good, and earlier I used 1.14 as well.
but i hadnt noticed to much difference.
I guess i might switch over, coz the battery really drains fast.
yes i make sure, screen does not switch on when in my pocket.
will see if downgrading will improve my battery life.
I'm In Mississuga.
I'm using Energy Rom + Radio 1.17. In my opinion, I feel the the Radio 1.17 is better than 1.14. cheers

Poor radio

I found the radio on HD2 is not perticulaly good, I had a few situations where the hd2 can not pick up any signal or 3g signal but a nokia or SE has full 5 bar on the same network.
i only get G in my work place and home. It always trys to switch to 3g, the bettry drains 5% a hour on standby... Its really frustrating when you see the bettery goes down pretty fast but the webpages never gets loaded.
Does flash another radio helps? any recommodations? I am on O2 and using stock rom stock radio. Thanks in advance!
It's all down to trial and error, some radios will give you better battery, lesser signal, others great signal more drain on the battery, head into the hd2 radio section in rom development, just make sure you HSPL first and you're good to go, read the instructions carefully and no issues should arise, good luck!!

This really is a radio thing, the signal and also the battery life. Try to search for custom roms mate and see what fits your needs. Custom roms are built to optimize battery usage. Regarding the signal, just try flashing a different radio version, then give some time to get stable, about a day or two. If still you don't get the signal that you want then try again for another version. I suggest you try to use the energyrom and use the radio 2.12. Just search it and give it a try. I'll try to help with my very best. Goodluck mate!

[Q] Phone signal

I've installed Android on NAND and am very impressed as everything seems visually better suited to the new format. I'm even happier now Copilot is working. However, I don't understand the signal bars properly. On WM I understand if I have 3G+ or at least a good signal. The signal bar in Android never looks particularly healthy although ironically as I type it is showing full bars with a 'G' beside it (I've just turned off wireless and the G appeared, this is presumably how data transfer is configured). Is there any reason why the signal might not be so good running Android instead of WM? Is there any way of improving the signal? Ultimately I need the thing to be a phone!
The Android I'm running is for Desire - whatever is linked to in the 'NAND for noobs' thread.
Trying flashing different radios. Search up our HD2 radio thread, and you'll see. Also, follow the requirements meant for your device to run android. Meaning don't flash a radio lower than 2.08 for EU HD2, for a TMOUS HD2, i'm not sure.
I used the latest (biggest number) radio before I put Android on - does flashing Android change the radio and in any case how do I find out what radio version I currently have?
Latest sure isn't always best when it comes to radios. You can check your radio in bootloader, or in android/settings/about phone, somewhere at the bottom
Flashing Android does not change your radio.
Stock Android uses 4 bars for signal while Sense ROMS use 6. I'm not sure how it equates between the ROMs but I can assure you there is no loss of signal.
First off, ignore the suggestions about updating your radio. You said that your signal appears weaker under Android than WM, so it's obviously not the radio as installing Android does not affect that.
All I can really say is that you may want to just ignore the signal bars and judge it by call quality. It may be that the build you are using is not reflecting the signal strength correctly. That's more likely than you actually having a weaker signal in a different OS since the OS has nothing to do with it!
Just see how you get on with it and if there is a problem then that's a different matter.
OK I don't seem to have any real issues with signal.
BUT (running Android NAND Desire Rom of some sort) after a few days a few problems:
1. The phone seems reluctant to charge in the car cradle if the charge level is low
2. Sometimes freezes in Copilot and needs battery removing to re start
3. Battery usage much more severe than WM
4. Lots of minor wobbles that I can't think of now I am typing.
The upshot is that I would now like a Desire HD but am thinking of going back to WM6.5 on the HD2 purely for reliability.

Well every build will have some minor hick up... Try different builds, there are plenty of build which have everything working and also the battery life is at par with win6.5

Can you point me to one? There are an overwhelming number available and I simply don't know how to judge one against the other

[Q] Signal Strength Problems

I am using a tmobile hd2 running nand, i followed all the directions to install the radio, which is Radio Leo 2.15.50.14, HARDSPL 2.08, and MAGLDR 1.13. I have tried multiple roms and everything works like it should, except i will lose a signal completely. Sometimes it comes back right away, or after a couple minutes or at the extreme i have to restart my phone.
What i dont understand is that this is my second hd2 since my first one got stolen, and i am running into the same problem. I have tmobile and i have pretty good service, so when my phone doesnt act up the signal strength is full bars, but it will still fade out like that.
This is what you need to do
task 29, reinstall clk/magldr ( i prefer clk, makes it more native android since it boots straight into android.) and than instead of radio 2.15, use 2.12 radio. and then flash rom. i havent experienced data drops, and its fast, and the battery life is super amazing. you wont look back
good luck!
Well i have mostly good reception but when im at my house i lose connection all the time, but when i switch to only 2g i dont have the problem at all. Try it.
well here is my update, i have tried multiple radios, task 29's and stuff, and i have yet to find a radio that gives me a stable connection. i have tried the 2.15, 2.14, and 2.12 and none of them have worked. my network type is set to 3g preferred. i live in central minnesota in the usa with tmobile and should have good signal, so i dont know what is wrong.
I've been having the same issue ever since I started using my HD2 a few days ago with AmeriCan build, 2.15.50.14, HARDSPL 2.08, and MAGLDR 1.13
not sure if this will work for everyone and so far it has been a couple of days and i have not have any drops and the signal stays at full bars, but here is what i did:
settings-network settings-network operators and then i selected t-mobile and a popup appeared saying "registered on network"
After i did that my signal became stable. i just kind of stumbled across this when i was looking through the settings >.<
I remember reading about a hardware fault that caused horrible connections , i had it bookmarked but i effed up my HD partitions and lost everything . Its a siimple fix , it has to do with the pins connecting the antenna .
Hi,
i am facing the same issues... Signal drops from time to time and signal strength is generally worse even in big cities.
Sometime after a phone call the signal drops completely for a few seconds...
@elesbb: Could you please lookup that hardware fault.. mabye an issue, that is easily fixable....
Thanx,
Nils
