Canadian users - which radio? - Touch HD General

Hello,
I am in canada on fido wireless.
I wanted to know, who else use the phone in canada and which radio version you use.
I feel my battery really drains fast... and dunno why?
I am using the 1.17 radio version.

It could be a bunch of things causing your battery to drain fast.
It could be your screen, perhaps your phone is waking up in your pocket or case (sometimes volume keys will wake up phone, perhaps power button is jostled), do you lock your phone?
Regarding the radio:
How is your reception with that radio?
You say you're on Fido, what city?
Do find yourself in more dead spots than usual? Do you find you miss calls? I've heard some people say their phone feels warm when making calls.
Also, what Rilphone.dll are you using? Reading the 1.17 thread it seems people get good results with the 1.15 rilphone.
Personally, I tried a ROM with that radio and I had poor result. Could have been the ROM, could have been my rilphone, but I was scared away from 1.17.
I've been using 1.14.25.24, on Fido, in Greater Vancouver. I find that it doesn't connect sometimes and I hit lots of dead spots (I've never had a phone that didn't work in my elevator before this one).
Recently I was in Port Coquitlam and it spent the day trying to connect to the network. First time I had my battery go so quick.
Myself, I'd choose reception over battery life.

I am in toronto.
Reception has been good, and earlier I used 1.14 as well.
but i hadnt noticed to much difference.
I guess i might switch over, coz the battery really drains fast.
yes i make sure, screen does not switch on when in my pocket.
will see if downgrading will improve my battery life.

I'm In Mississuga.
I'm using Energy Rom + Radio 1.17. In my opinion, I feel the the Radio 1.17 is better than 1.14. cheers

Are you saying your battery is dead 1 day after continuously having this program activated? If so, I'm amazed the battery lasted that long! How old is your device and battery? Does the battery charge o.k. when it's plugged to a charger?
Hi Hotdog,
Thanks for your reply.
My device is 1 year old and the battery drains even when the phone is inactive(battery charges just fine).
Before installing NBD, the battery lasted like 3 days (not really an active user of the phone) and now only 1 day.
Am i the only person experiencing this issue around the forums??
Device info:
ROM version 6.6.6.666 WWE
ROM date 8/23/07
RADIO version 02.19.11
Protocol version 4.1.1309
MDA Vario T-mobile AKU2 model.
Thx.

Ive seen many people with this problem. all I can suggest to you is, lower rom numbers on WM6 use up the battery faster. I dont know why that is but that is the trend.
Im not suggesting you go out there and get 2.69 radio rom. the higher you go the more unstable the rom is. all Im saying is, it might be the radio rom mixed with WM6. try a reflash back to wm5 and see if battery is back to 3 days.
One other thing you can try is drain the battery completely, recharge it fully, drain it a second time and recharge it fully again. sometimes when you flash the battery memory gets messed up, it's happened to me once.

Thanks for the reply elmetal!
That brings me to my second question,
Is there a Radio ROM out there for my T-mobile that is stable and runs smooth under NBD 8.0?
What comes after RADIO version 02.19.11? 2.69 radio rom?
I did actually flash back to the original T-mobile NL ROM (latest version)
And there the battery is functioning as expected.
(you can really tell, in the afternoon, the battery is almost at 50% with NBD)
Thank you so much for your help! really appreciated.

hmm.. I never focus much on tmobile users with radio problems, more cingular users. some say the 2.47 works, some say the 2.69 is flawless, I personally use the cingular 2.25.11. it's the stock cingular rom and it works fine.
Im gonna give the forum a good look for tmobile radio rom threads and ill redirect you
I suggest you try the cingular 2.25.11 (being that tmobile in the us uses a lot of cingular towers) since its really really stable.
EDIT
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314235&highlight=t+mobile+radio+rom
try that, its a decent thread on the ROM workin in the UK, Im not exactly sure where you're stationed but the point is this, there's probably an existing thread out there.
Only thing is, many different people have many different results. Updating Radio ROMs is a little dangerous for me cus the calls I receive can be very important so I try not to mess with it.
Install a new radio rom, leave your phone in standby for a few hours and test texting and calling to see if itll wake up on its own, some roms wont work well. trial and error
Goodluck!

Point taken
Will do some more research on Tmobile Dutch(Netherlands) Radio Roms to see if that helps.
Thanks for all the effort elmetal!
Nope it's not the Radio Rom 2.19 is the most stable and loses less energy.
The 2.69 radio Has more problems keeping the signal so it uses more energy to maintain the signal, and of course you might lose some calls here and there.
Earlier posts do indeed have the classic basic Battery drain tips.
But what about deleting the items from the Windows\StartUp folder?
Flash a fully loaded battery.
How about borowing my new battery and see if it makes a difference since my wizard is on repair.
Some users even have reported that 8.2 actually was better on the battery then 8.3.
Some believe that it might have something to do with the memory leak problem most Wizard roms have issues with. Keeping more memory reffreshed does require more power. So try to set the weather plug in to only update mannualy set the homescreen to not time out. Or try setting up the included smartskey to overclock instead of Battery status althought i don't think that battery status causes isseus.
Or do a Combo. Drain the battery recharge it perform a hard reset or clear storage. You could also try a lower pagepool rom version, nowadays you can change the pagepool without reflashing. Lower is slower but again it uses less memory. You could also use wizard registry wizard to change the font cache to lower setting and other cache settings.
My advice is to charge as less as possible as my USB connector got ****ed.
I tried the 25.11 on T-mobile network but quit using it as it either froze the ROM or could just not connect.
Or yes you could get another phone
Also make sure you change the settings of the network registry to not automaticly scanning for the network.

I have a MDA and I am running WM6 and using the 2.69.11 radio and I have no problems. I found that changing the task manager settings so that the program actually closes when you click x helps increase free ram and also, don't use any overclocker software such as battery status(it kills your battery and it doesnt make that much of a difference anyways...). Another thing you want to do is disable the today timeout under today settings. that tends to use more ram and thus, kills the battery faster.
See i knew i wasn't crazy about the today timeout
Thanks for the confirm.
I had the same problem with I upgraded to 8.1. Battery drain was pretty bad.. Usually getting home from work, I'd still be in the 90's with moderate texting, but with 8.1 i'd be in like the 50's. I just went back to 7.9.
The problem isn't the ROM... it's the audio manager from HTC, that sucker eats battery like I've never seen... been having this issue too, until I stoped using the audio manager and started using windows media player!

Same here i (as in i didn't actually notice it) but i stopped using the audio manager in favour of WMP as it gave better reactions to using the Stereo Bluetooth headset. As in Audio manager sometimes did not pick up the next and previous commands or would stop playing.
As i said i never really paid attention and i can only speculate that the battery drained faster when i did use Audiomanager.
Just goes to show that closing apps completely is always the best practice.
BTW, dferreira.
Ai's it Funny how one month after your WM5SE release people actually reacted after my post
What is your reason to use WM5 base?
WM5 is the native OS for Wizards... so, I find it to be more quick than WM6... Never gave me problems, like WM6 did. WM6 is just a face lift on WM5 so... I'm trying to make it as good as WM6 but quicker

What build were you having a problem to begin with?
BTW you should see Alban's Touch running on 312MHZ with 12 MB Pagepool.

how much does a rom affect reception?

something that has been bugging me a bit lately is that when it comes to downloading or anything other than general phone calls, my phone signal does not seem to be as strong as it used to be.
i used to get H all the time for my phone signal. then i went to a different rom and it changed to 3G. (which i think is normal?)
but now it mostly seems to be sitting on just G.
the only things that have changed has been the rom (currently using enomther's the official), the recovery (ra's 1.2.1 or something) and the spl (1.33.2004 engineering).
i thought the signal would be affected more by changes to the radio. is that right? or does the rom and the spl also have an affect?
no comments?
I really don't know, and maybe other members don't know, hence the no comments.
If it's sitting on G, did you check if the "Always use 2G Networks" is enabled? But you could also take a look inside the framework (unzip it) of the rom and check what icons they have. Perhaps there is that slight possibility that they don't have icons for 3G! I don't know! (I highly doubt that would help though lol) I think radio has an effect on things like GPS but yeah. Not too sure about the reception but to be honest, I dont think a rom affects reception.
I would recommend a speed test though!

[RADIO] no/bad radio signal aaaargh

the problem i have, is that my phone loses signal every once in a while. I get between 4 and 0 signal bars, changing all the time, while I sit still in the living room So often I have no reception for text messages or calls.
it seems that winmo uses so much CPU power for certain background tasks, that the signal quality suffers, or even loses signal. When starting a call, or sending an sms, the signal bars drop like led.
what can I can do? getting desperate here... I even tried holding the phone upside down, thus not touching the antenna. Pharaday effect is known, but phone quality is only marginally better outside. Tried all radios on the forum, and several different flavours ROM, including a stock one
is there a software tool, that displays exact radio signal strength, instead of the bars on top?

i have very bad signal if i sit or stand under or next to METAL roof around my house, but i have a very good signal outside my house. Sometimes i am not able to receive a call when making a call from home phone. Since you have all radios in here, i don't know which radio to suggest. FYI, I am using 2.08.50.08_2 radio and it gives me better signal.

that's Pharaday's Cage effect. that is not what I have. HD2 cpu power is having an effect on the radio signal strength (bg processes probably)
If other people with non-HD2 phones have the same problems, the problem may not be your HD2, but consider you have weak signal strength from your provider. This happened in my previous appartment where I had to stay in the kitchen if I wanted to make a phone call.
What radio ROM do you use ? I had some problems too in the past. Now with radio ROM 2.10.50.26 I don't have these problems anymore.
But in the meanwhile I never went back to a stock ROM either so my next question is : what ROM do you use ? I don't have any of these problems with Laurentius26 or CleanEX ROMs since I use the 2.10.50.26 radio ROM.

hej, 2.10.50.26 was the last one I used, when i decided to go "back" to the official ROM in Denmark and that one came with radio 2.06.51.07.
I used primarily Miri's ROM, but I switched to Artemis (did of course a task29 after the stock ROM); Artemis tests on radio 2.06 instead of 2.10. My theory was/is that a windows ROM should fit with radio ROM. But so far, not noticeably better.
REQ: still looking for a tool that monitors (and logs?) signal strength, so I do some tests. anyone?
I just found this post by tokolosh in an EnergROM thead
Q: Which is the best Radio to use with EnergyRoms ...... ?
A: There is no "Best" Radio, they seem to be Location and Preference dependant. Some have better Recetion but poor battery life and vicaversa. Try out the "big 4" to see which works best for you (2.(07/08/09/10).50.xx_xx) just make sure it is a 50 and not a 51 version --> example 2.07.50.xx is good but 2.07.51.xx is not

Anyone smarter than me who can explain WHY the 51 is not good? (googled for answer but no luck...)

[Q] Updating radio to save battery

Hi,
I have a question about the radio and what it does for the battery. I'm currently using my HD2 with android, but the maximum amount of time before my battery is out of power is about 12-15 hours. I have the latest original HTC rom installed (RUU_Leo_S_HTC_NLD_3.14.404.2_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_S_Ship), and i am currently using the MDJ_Revolution_HD_v._1.2_MDJ_S7.7HD android rom.
As far as i understand the radio is like the bios of your computer. I have been reading somethings about updating the radio so your phone uses less battery. But i haven't seen anything specific about this, like witch radio to use ect. Now I've been reading a little bit about updating a radio, and notest that it is a pretty riskfull thing to update the radio, so I'm trying the collect as much information about this before bricking my perfectly working HD2.
Could somebody clear this up for me?
Should i install a different radio to improve my battery usage? And why?
Radio can change battery usage but not necessarily has to. It depends on to many variables to give you straight answer. It depends on carrier, signal strength in your place, the way you use your phone etc. I can tel you this I'm with Meteor in Ireland and I'm using the same radio as you. My phone drain battery in more or less 24h, so you can see that is not only radio related. I do not know how dangerous is changing radio in the theory, but I did it at least dozen of times and didn't noticed any problems. Answering your question: you could try changing radio, there is chance that it will improve battery life of your mobile

The radio definitely plays an important role when it comes to battery consumption. No doubts there.
Now depending on the type of ROM you use, a specific radio version will work best with it.
I tried the latest Radio (2.15), I was not satisfied so switched to 2.12 - it was the radio version suggested by the ROM chief.
In theory the latest radio should be the best, but i dnt think its always true when it comes to android on the HD2, specially with RMNET and PPP connections and many other factors.
Simply use the radio suggested by ur ROM chief. If not satisfied, try the latest radio and compare. Only you can judge.
Last thing, i flashed radios several times (more than 10 times), never had any issues.
Just make sure u dnt interrupt the process lol and follow the instructions clearly.
Hope this helps.

TIP: Flash radio 2.12.50.02_2 for amazing battery life

There is currently a topic on radio versus battery life but as the conclusion is so great I want everyone to know as it may have got lost in the other thread and I feel users here are missing out by not knowing about it.
Basically several users have flashed the 2.12 radio and found much better battery life. On the 2.15 radio I used to get less than 10 hours. On radio 2.12 I have got 18 hours at least.
To flash a radio to your phone, turn off your phone completely. While holding down the volume down button, turn the phone back on. Keep volume down button pressed until you see the red, green blue screen. Connect your usb cable to phone and PC and the text on the screen will change from serial to USB. Execute the custom RUU file and follow the steps to flash 2.12 radio.

2.12 give me better battery but slower 3G data while 2.15 3G is faster but little more battery drain. It depend on what you need more.
I choose 2.15 for faster 3G
Question:
Should already know I guess but...
Can we just flash the radio and keep the rest of the set-up or do we have to re do the windows installation / un-locking / activation thing?

Just flash radio through bootloader (hold vol down while reseting) and it'll keep everything as is
The radio won't affect your Windows installation at all. Flash at will Just downgraded from 2.14 to 2.12. Now let's see if I will get some more time from it. With 2.14 it was soemthing like 14-15 hrs.
I Will test it when i go home! Thanks mate!
i also found 2.12 better for battery life. although 2.14 seemed ot have slightly better data/voice quality.
The battery life wins out though
I will test it out. THX Mate.

Well depends on the phone you have, I had to reinstall my WP7 DFT rom after downgrading to 2.12 due to constant reboot on the DFT screen. I think one should be aware of it too.

I can confirm that too. Much better
So, how do you check which radio you have from within windows Phone 7?
confirm...however data connection sucks....hmmmmm
Is it just the 3G connections that slow down or would there be a noticeable reduction in speeds over Edge?
Strange... my data connection is the same as always. no slow down at all.
The quality of the data connection depends mainly on the network. If you have good enough coverage you won't notice a difference at all.
Do you get call problems,ie does the phone crash after calling with this radio ?
no changes in signal strength but the calibration for the battery meter is horribly unstable atm... if I do a hard reset after a few hours the battery meter goes higher lol
Can someone please re upload this somewhere else?
