Alright, I baught my G1 from a friend off Craigslist and I got it unlocked so I could use my g1 with AT&T. The phone was great for a few weeks. Now it just randomly turns off, it sometimes restarts but most of the time I have to take the battery out and put it back in.
I did a google search about it and read a few things but their situation isn't exactly like mine.
When it turns off and stays off (wont respond to On Button) there is a red light near the speaker that is just constantly on and wont turn off, even when the phone is unresponsive.
I use a generic USB plug to charge my G1 from my PC.
My phone has root abilitys but I had this problem before I enabled root.
Does this on all versions RC29 to the Current Cupcake
Do I need to send the phone to HTC?
Do I need to get a new Battery?
Can I buy the battery retail or from only HTC?
Will HTC service my phone even though I got it off CL?
This phone was purchased around Sept last year (when the owner orginally had it)
EDIT: Phone turned off again, started with the T-Mobile logo. I shut the slider so its closed and it turned off. Will not turn back on.
I tried a little bit close to 30 times now and no response.
Thank you in advanced for the help and replies.

Sounds like a hardware problem. Did the phone ever suffer water damage or a drop?

Nope, no water damage and no drops that I could think of.
probably a few minor ones but nothing such as a serious drop (onto concrete or floor)
Unroot and flash back to the original ROM, then contact HTC. They will cover it under warranty...all you pay is shipping it to Houston.
I cannot turn on my G1, to unroot it.
I was pretty sure having a rooted phone didn't void the warranty anyways?
Rooting your phone doesn't void the warranty
It sounds like you have water damage.
Thats weird, How could I have water damage if I was so anal about not getting it wet or even bringing it into the bathroom with me =S
Is there any other reason for this malfunction that fits other then water damage?
Will they still fix it if signs point towards WD?
Personally I don't think it could be water damage since I'm always in dry areas with it and I don't even use it when I'm eating or in the bathroom.
but who knows =/
The way to tell if there is water damage is there is a small sticker on the inside by the battery and another one on the battery. If it still looks like its red and white (may look pink) then you straight it shouldn't be water damage.

Its black with white letters, the same it has always been. So its not WD.
On the battery its a red mesh with white, I'm not sure if it means water damage because I'm a bit confused about your last post. I licked the end of this battery before I went to bed to see if it held a charge and it does.
So the phone's sticker says no WD and the Battery has a red mesh of red over white but not a thick red line in the center.

Your right its not water damage. As long as you see the red mesh that means its straight. And my bad wasn't tryna be confusing its to early and not enough coffee.
Haha I know exactly how you feel on that one, i have to go to Red Rock Casino today and its going to be really depressing not bringing my G1 rofl.
What could this be?
It use to shut off on me randomly but never permanently like now.
I read online that this happened to someone else and he waited some hours and put in his battery and it started back up but so far nothing has happened when I put it in this morning.
Is there a major defect in the G1s that cause them to do this or is my situation a "How in the hell could that happen " kind of thing.
If you have a second battery try that if not I would say maybe go by a t mobile store or any other store that sells batteries for it and possibly try a different battery. Maybe there could be a connection problem for charging, but then again that may not be the problem. Last month my phone took the slightest fall and never turned back on and I know I've dropped my phone much harder than that. If you had t mobile then I would say go to the store and have them replace saying your going out of town and really need it. When mine broke I just took it to the store and they replaced it there so no need to use the warranty and wait on the mail man.

I'm on live chat with T-Mobile and they told me to contact AT&T and I gave them hell. I hope I get this resolved today or my phone magically starts working for no known reason.
I'm not much of a gambler ironically enough, I was born and raised here in Las Vegas rofl.
EDIT: I contacted HTC and they say having root access is hacking the phone and installing illegal software and they wont RMA it.
So I told them go ahead and just forget because I have root. The phone wont charge or anything.
aagggghhhhh you shouldn't have told them you gained root or modified it at all. Did you give them any info, or can you call back and try again?

I didn't tell them they told me that in order to do an RMA I need to have phone that wasn't damaged physically and a phone without any illegal software on it. So I asked them if having root was illegal (after reading constantly online that it wouldn't void the warranty) they said yes.
It would cost me an extra hundred dollars to have them fix it if they find out it was rooted.
Edit: The Hundred dollars would be billed to a credit card that I have to supply when RMAing. I don't have a credit card. I think their a waste but now I need one.

The pink sticker indicates water damage so if you try to exchange it they will most likely charge you an out of warranty fee.
Water damage will screw you no matter what... so next time you decide to take your phone for a swim... its probably not a good idea

lol you and yo pixs duprade ok thx for the fast reply i had that problem before but i never took my fone by water. well not the back of my fone. i know the battery never been wet. u think i can put the sticker from my dash on my wing??????? and wat that void mean by the camera lens. am i screw?!?! i have that 5.99 insurance but i refuse to pay 110 when i only pay 100 and i haven't been "jack" yet. i am tired of people tlk about the outside when the software on it is so bomb
well, I guess you can try to switch the little stickers and see if you can get that to work. I'm sure alot of us will be interested to know if that works.\
I've dropped phones into toilets more than once, pools... i've also been pushed into pools with my phone on me, and I've also fallen into lakes and the ocean with the phone in my pocket.
I ended up having to buy a new one everytime... so if that works out for you, I'm sure alot of people would be interested in knowing how to get around that water damage sticker.
Water damage is like automatic denial of anything by customer service... so if you can get around that, maybe you'll have luck replacing it. Let us know what happens.
No they examine the phones when you ship your old one back and most of the time they still catch the water damage and charge your account. They refurbish the salvageable ones and pass them back out to customers who have not voided their warranty. I used to work for one of the retail stores and I've seen people try everything from peeling off the sticker to claiming it was only from humidity on a tropical vacation. Best thing ever though was a guy who thought his phone was waterproof because it was yellow. I'm not even kidding. Gotta love the Nextel customers haha.
well there no water damage so i think i can get away, but their wasn't a sticker on my dash so i have to find another. I was told by a pda rep who seem so amazed by me living in los angeles (that another story) that he will put notion so i won*t have to worry lol. I kno about nextel lol when i had a side job working for a retail store. they have strict rule. i mean we could lose our jobs if we give user extra ringtones. but that was about 3 or 4 yr ago. anyway i am sure i will get a new fone. But no one have a sucess story????? anyway i keep everyone updated!!!!
edit: the yellow and black rugged nextel is not waterproof????? lol
Well yeah some people have gotten away with it. I did say "most". It's just luck though, whether they determine it do be under warranty or customer damaged. If the sticker is pink though some kind of moisture had to have come into contact with it. The sticker itself doesn't really matter, not all phones even have them. They look inside the phone and can tell if it's been exposed to liquid. Now if it's just barely pink and you maybe just splashed a bit once and no moisture really got inside the phone you might get away with it. This is all T-Mobile info by the way, I never worked for Nextel, that story was courtesy of one of my co-worker's previous jobs.
90% of phones have a water damage indicator sticker inside the phone. It's very rare the outer one is tripped and the inner one isn't.
There's absolutely no way to tell what actually triggered the sticker (was it thrown into a pool, or just taken into a cool house from being outside in the heat?) and there's no way to know if water damage is responsible for a phone acting up, so they simply void the warranty on any phone that's had it's sticker tripped. This comes direct from the phone manufacturer, btw, not the carrier.
I don't know T-Mobile's policies exactly, but with Verizon if you somehow manage to get a water damaged phone (or one with a tripped indicator) exchanged under warranty, they will bill you the full retail price of a brand-new phone for your refurb. So you might want to think twice about trying to sucker a store rep.
$110 insurance deductable is a lot better then a $400 charge on your next phone bill!
lose the phone then
hello?

yes... someone stole my phone...

With all the above- you will be charged a OOW fee (out of warranty). For T-Mo it should be $100
If they don't (which is highly unlikely) you are a very lucky man/woman. You and me need to go to the track..
About 6-8 months ago I sent in a (perfect) phone that had a earpiece speaker going bad. -Stupid me could have fixed it for about $10... Sent it in under "warranty" to T-Mo and was hit up with a $100 OOW fee.
Stickers were WHITE- ALL of them... (There are stickers INSIDE the phone as well) I know this as I had it apart... Took pics... Thing is I can't tell T-Mo that as opening the unit would officially void the warranty as well.
Don't have kids- always retain possession of the phone, and have never dunked it in water. In addtion I sheild it from the rain- protect from temp changes... In other words "baby" the phone to the 9th degree...
Best of luck to you- but at the least you're looking at a $100 OOW fee- if phone is in warranty.
So far as claiming it lost or stolen- when it is NOT... Alot of times you will be required to fill out a police report- and the cops /judges aren't "cool" with filing false reports... Besides that there is something called karma to consider..You fill a false report- next day something bad happens..

just a little update i got my new wing and it been around two week and no letter or fees...
here wat i did
1 call them about a frezzeing problem and call keep going and i can*t end the call which is true..
2 the nice dude put all the noation
3 i told him that that the sticker was white but it was falling off cuz it slide against the battery. he look at his wing and notice that also
3 he put a little note to the warehouse about the sticker, so dnt mark me down
4 i removed the sticker
5 my fone come
6 i put a note in the box stating the man on the fone said tell u that the sticker was falling off and provided my email
7 after two week i post a update on these forums
8 since my fone was never around water i doubt it will never charge me
9 i jump around like a little kid
10 i buy a sidekick lx
11i request a developer key
12 sorry getting off topic.. that basiclly now it all went down... my fone never had real water damage accept for a little peice of cotton that lie on me... but if they do charge me i have the money ready
no i am not lucky just special
.
aron4588,
The charge may come in the next billing cycle.
On the nice dude noting "pinkish" sticker coming off. It is common practice for persons who have heard the sticker is supposed to be white, to remove the sticker if it's not.
The refurb center has the last word- if they say water damaged, etc- you get charged...
Best of luck to ya... if you don't get charged you and me need to go to the track ... You pick a couple of horses /dogs for me.
.
ive sent my phone back at least 10 times while it was still under warrenty to get the "best" refurbished phone they would send me. the first one had radio problems, dropped calls, things like that. they sent one every time, though with some, if little hassle. some of the phones they sent couldnt be clocked over passed 260 so i kept sending them back. got the one i wanted. all good
running touch it

For those who are/have/and still experiencing specs of dust underneath the touchscreen....
... I will endeavor on a journey using iFixIt.com's Nexus One Teardown Guide. There will be no need to document me taking apart the device, however, I will be taking pictures of the dust, the location of the leak, me cleaning the device, and an attempt to seal the leak. I bought the essential tools from ifixit.com: Phillips #00 Screwdriver, T4 Torx Screwdriver, iPod Opening Tools. This came out to a total of $12.85. I then used a $5.00 coupon code (11221FIXIT) bringing me down to $7.85. There is no sales tax unless you live in CA. Shipping was $3.17.
Long story short - I was tired of looking at the dust, tired of the HTC folks say "sorry, you voided your warranty" and "sorry, we only send you a refurbished device, not your own or a new one". So, I spent the $11 and I'm going to fix it on my own. WISH ME LUCK.

*******UPDATE*******
Alright folks - I took the time out of my day to open my Nexus One and clean off the dust underneath the screen. I took pictures. Here is my assessment after completing this daunting task.
PROS
-NO MORE DUST!!!!!!
-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MORE DUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!!!!
CONS
-Takes a lot of time (2.5 hours)
-There is now a smear on the bottom of the screen now - it can only be seen in direct sunlight
-Putting it back together is an ASS-PAIN. Such a pain in fact, by the time I was finished there were still 2 screws left, and 3 weird rubbery pieces that I left out.
The phone is back together and in excellent working shape
All in all, only do this if you have the amount of dust under your screen like I did. I am happy with the results but I think I want a BRAND NEW PHONE. Oh well.. Enjoy the pics.

Good luck, can't wait to hear what you find. Can you take pictures pre-doing this all? Specifically of the dust build up?
Ok, most important thing to do. Make sure you are in a clean room! Maybe even a Clean Room. Otherwise you will end up putting more dust in than you take out. Cheapest way is to run a hot shower and let the place fog up and then settle to get the dust out of the air. But probably not a good thing to open your phone while it is still fully fogged up as you'll get condensation inside it

Yes, of course I'll take pictures of the dust BEFORE I disassemble the device. And then I'll take the AFTER pictures when it's reassembled.

Awesome tip! Thanks.
yeah i cant stress enough to make sure you do this in a claean environment. i tried doing this with my nokia e71, and i never could get the screen lcd clean no matter what i tried! as i put it back together, little particles would just gravitate to it no matter what. i would wipe and try to quickly put it together, more dust. tried again, more dust. over and over.
here at work we have cleanrooms at a extremely high rating. if only i could use them to disassemble my smartphone.

if you get a nexus just press down on the bottom by the capacitive buttons. If the screen creaks or feels like it gives just follow what Uansari1 did and heat it with a hair dryer for a few seconds from like 5in. away and the press firmly around the screen. It will help to reseal.
oaky thanks ill keep that in mind
so its a pretty common problem then?
it was for the launch nexus', im sure (hopefully) they have it all sorted out by now.

Weird. I have called HTC. I am on my second exchange from them with the same issue. Dust under the screen. i dont think it was a common problem at all. but then i have seen threads with many people havng this issue. so far my nexus has not had this issue at all and its over 3 months old. so i dont know. but i DO know that if you look in the iphone forums, dust under the screen threads are all over there too. even windows mobile forums have the same threads. so it seems like its a problem with most touch screen phones.

They put a $500+ hold on your credit card. They won't tell you that you will lose that money if you've unlocked your bootloader. My guess is, they're hoping you've voided your warranty, sent in an unlocked phone, and now they keep the money. I also asked them how much it would cost to repair it... They estimated $179. BULL****.. I KNOW.

Nah. Theres alredy a big thread about this. They do put a $530 hold on your CC. But the hold is gone once they receive the phone. If they WANT to charge you the its usually a $28 repair fee or you have a choice of sending back the replacement phone.

I have been selling a couple a week at the cell phone store I work for, and haven't seen this on a single one of those. I would say all in all, I have sold about 20 Nexus One now.
Personally, I think the issue goes back to these shipping out during January during the coldest period of the winter, even having freezing temps all the way into Texas... I suspect that that phones got cold enough that through contraction and added brittleness of the adhesive in a cold state, the seal broke.
While at King's Dominion earlier this week, I noticed the "DEL" part of the logo on the battery cover fell off (probably 1-too many roller coaster rides). The last "L" stayed on. Fortunately, I had the original clear silicone case on it, and the "DEL" got caught up top / side between the phone & the case.... When I got home, I cleaned the logo area with alcohol and a Q-Tip and used a tooth pick to put little dabs of Super Glue (the gel type glue), in the recesses where the logo is at the middle-most part. I think I got good adhesion.... seems secure now, but I'm wondering if I should pry off the last "L" and the circular parts and glue them as well?
I picked up an original Dell dock earlier this week and cannot use the dock and any case simultaneously... and I'm also liking the way my nude Streak feels, but I'm afraid if the rest of the logo tries to escape, I may not have the case on and consequently loose the parts..... Any thoughts?
Thanks all!

My chrome logo fell off a couple of months ago
The thing is, I don't mind because in my opinion it actually looks a lot better as a simple engraved logo!
The chrome ring around the dell logo slithered right off of my back cover
So Rico..... Are you runnin 'er without the circle? ..... Just wondering

talk to dell and ask for a replacement battery cover. so that you won't suffer a $10 loss when you sell it.

Rico I'm with you, Dude...... I'll never willingly part with my Streak, REGARDLESS of ANY offer... Seriously, I've never felt this attached to any gizmo I've ever owned..... It's not that I can't help it...I just don't wanna help it ;-) As much as I read about new devices I am not impressed at all, many of the android devices look so alike, they don't even catch my attention.
We don't have a retina display buy I think the Streak has a nice screen.
Getting ready to go to bed...streak,charger,headphones...I am ready now.
Hahahaha... I lost the logo also when i try to use the silicone case. It just went sticky with the case i guess, so with some insert-deinsert cycle it went loose. I did purchase the replacement cover though ($40 - goddamnit), but daily I keep the old cover because I like it that way (matte with embossed effect-LoL).
So sorry i have to part with my streak. Last month i almost lose this phone, actually I did but then someone find it and return it to me. In reflection i decided to sell, because it's some kind of bad mojo for me. Still i missed my streak though...

Which relaxation apps! I,was totally into thatback in the day. Even recorded my own thunderstorms/rain and wind "cassettes"...(wow do they make cassettes these days?)... Ive even placed sensitive microphones at the base of gutter drains on the house to get that trickling, water sound.... Needlessto say,. Wasnt "STREAKN" back tben.
Last nite, the wifey told to take me and "that thing icant keep my hands off of" to the other toom and "have at it"........so I did. Me and my Dell Streak Was up all night . Gawd I luv this tab/phone!
Too true..... There's NOTHING out there that's even in the same category.... Unless something bad happens to mine, I don't EVER plan on getting rid of it..... Hell, even if/when aTnT takes over my beloved T-Mobile, I'll be all set for their, um, "3G" bands (although T-Mobile's 2G is usually FASTER than the DeathStar's "3G").....
Rico.... Dude I usually fall asleep with mine plugged in..... but when the wife wakes up, she usually pulls it out of my hands and puts it on the nightstand

You tha man! Id like to try sleeping with mine plugged in all nite. I usually fall asleep with my streak in my hand and somebody come along and plays with it before they put it back in my hand or in my pants.
I need to be careful though, that gorilla glass aint what its crackex up to be. One night I may roll over ontop of it and break it. Now that dell dropped the Streak, it might get hard locating replacement parts.
So guys, I got scammed on ebay this week.
I saw a listing for a Xperia play for 40 dollars and I've needed one ever since my phone got eaten by my dog.
I took a chance and spent the money on it.
The seller told me in the listing that the phone was fully functional.
Skip ahead today and I got the phone.
Right away I could tell it was going to have problems. The USB jack was totally screwed up.
I've never seen one this bad actually. Anyways I get home and sure enough the phone wont charge or anything.
I put a new battery in it, and the phone wont even boot up.
So at this point I'm getting pretty upset.
I contact the guy on Ebay and tell him, "Listen this device is broken. I want a refund. Not only is the USB jack broken., but the motherboard is also bricked". Mind you, this was after he listed it as fully functional.
So he tries to refund me 15$. I told him no way, I'm not paying that much for a busted Xperia.
I told him, I'll take a 25$ refund and leave good feedback if you do it.
So he refunds me the cash and I started taking this thing apart since I'm going to be keeping it now.
Right away I see we have a problem.
The WATER INDICATOR, is clearly been soaked and red.
So not only was the USB jack fried but also the phones been dropped in water and the motherboard is bricked.
The only part I could salvage out of the phone was the LCD screen and digitizer.
It would be ok, except my motherboard has a bad USB jack too. and I cant repair it because I don't have surface mount solder repair station at my house.
If I ask a company to surface mount a new USB port onto the phone, they will ask for 50$ or more, and I can't afford it.
So if any of you nice people have a broken phone with a good motherboard, let me know. I can pay up to 25$ for the motherboard.
Until then I might not be able to do any developing. I don't have USB access and that's a major problem.
Thanks for reading and let me know.
Just to let everyone know I'm serious about repairing this thing.
Here is a recent picture of all the parts I have around my house.
I actually have some more but their not in these pictures.

Yeah you're saying it nice.
He actually lied big time because the listing said it was fully functional.
Not only was it water damaged but the board is bricked.
I hooked the test points up to my computer and the motherboard is throwing up a brick code. one that I know isn't repairable by anyone on this board. (the BIOS is corrupted and now it's 100% locked)
He knew for a fact that this phone was garbage,. I don't know why he lied tho.
The guy has really decent feedbacks.
Like 500 sales and 99.8% score.
Anyways we settled outside of ebay with the refund thing.
I didn't want to totally pay nothing, since the screen was salvaged off the unit.
But yeah., It was a really scummy thing to do.
I have some better news to report.
I have a semi-decent motherboard now.
The USB pins are messed up but atleast its making a connection.
Alejandrissimo @XDA used his SETOOL program remotely and helped me recover the board that was stuck in zeus mode.
Long story short. I'll be able to update the rom after all.
I still need to get ahold of a better Mobo tho, so If anyone is selling a spare, let me know.
I can send you some parts just for the cost of shipping, but I don't know if you can do anything with it.
The motherboard work, but it can't detect sim card anymore. It still have an IMEI number. It has a strange behavior that if the battery is not drained yet and the phone is on, it can charge that battery. But if you leave the battery in the phone, whether the phone is on or off, overnight the battery will be drained completely. Then it is impossible to charge the battery even if you connect it to the charger, unless you put the battery into a different Play, or possibly buy an external charger. It can still connect to the PC for flashing and fastboot, etc. I also notice it have problem booting into stock firmware unless it is powered on by the charger. However, it boot fine into custom roms from battery power.
Other things that doesn't work: Digitizer, Start and Home button (both of these can be easily remapped in the keylayout file). The problem is to flash roms most CWM version require the Home button. There is one CWM version that use the Search button however. Also the main cable is kind of worn, but still working. R button a bit unresponsive, unless you don't screw it in at all then it clicks perfectly.
The only usable thing I can do it it right now is to charge the battery externally and use the gamepad to navigate and play games without touchscreen. I do not think the sim slot is damaged, it might need some kind of reprogram. Other things I confirm working: screen, camera, speakers.

No, the last version Verizon update the R800x to officially is 2.3.4. Otherwise you will have to install other custom roms.
I run the R800x with stock 2.3.4 rooted, I just use LBE Security Manager to freeze apps and disable them autostarting.

Hey, I was wondering where the seller was located? I recently sold an Xperia Play and when I sold it the buyer said that his son previously had one and jumped into a pool with it which is why he was buying mine... I'm very curious if this is the same person. The time of him buying a new one and you buying yours seem to match as well.

Lol today I dropped my phone literally only about a foot onto a screw that was pointing up and shattered the screen pretty bad.
Anyhow I did a claim with Verizon's insurance and it's on backorder so I said f that and bought a screen from DIYMobileRepair so I can just fix it myself...but after I ordered it I realized it's not a OEM replacement screen..man I hope the screen looks just as good as the OEM the specs are the same..anyone bought screens from there before and the quality is still the same as OEM? OMG, I was just about to post how I had to order a replacement phone yesterday.
I got so lucky!!! My phone started to have issues withe the microphone. Not bad but just slightly annoying. I called VZW and they shipped it out overnight. Got the new one today and... It had 7.1 on and not 7.1.1. Unlocked as quickly as I could run!
Weird how both our phones went down at the same time.
I was thinking about your issue. There are only so many companies that can make that type of screen so odds are you will get a decent one.

Since there is basically no new XL's easisily available, my guess is they are replacing with returned phones or repaired phones. I doubt they update the firmware. I think once stock levels rise and time goes by, all replacement until will likely have 7.1.1

Plus to replace the screen is easy as hell...took apart my screen today to see how difficult it would be lol

That is true ! I've asked if I would still have warranty if I had them do a whole conversion from black to white and Ubreakifixit said nope. I contacted google and they said that is fine , if there is no physical/water damage then I still will have the 1 year warranty. So I'm going to have them change my pixel to white since mine is cracked on front and back. Then have google swap my Verizon model for a Google play model.:fingers-crossed:

It's easier replacing the whole LCD assembly since you don't have to worry about cracking the old lcd under the old glass. Oh and don't forget to buy tempered glass protector now haha.
I have to replace the LCD on my Pixel. Can anyone tell me what kind of adhesive I need? Is 3m double sided scotch tape good enough, or do I need some other one?

That'll work. Most of the screen replacements come with some sort of adhesive
