Lol today I dropped my phone literally only about a foot onto a screw that was pointing up and shattered the screen pretty bad.
Anyhow I did a claim with Verizon's insurance and it's on backorder so I said f that and bought a screen from DIYMobileRepair so I can just fix it myself...but after I ordered it I realized it's not a OEM replacement screen..man I hope the screen looks just as good as the OEM the specs are the same..anyone bought screens from there before and the quality is still the same as OEM? I'll have the replacement screen Monday so I can fix it myself

Did you break the digitizer? I dropped mine and shattered the corner everything still works though. I'm with Verizon so I don't want to use my insurance. I'm afraid I'll get my/different phone back with a locked bootloader. I think I'll eventually shell out the cash and take your route.

No digitizer is good..it barely fell..it just fell on a screw facing up just right when I was at work
I love how you started your OP with "lol".
I don't possibly see how it could NOT be an OEM replacement screen. Who else in the world could possibly make the exact same display? It's not like you're swapping out a light bulb here... I wouldn't worry.

OMG, I was just about to post how I had to order a replacement phone yesterday.
I got so lucky!!! My phone started to have issues withe the microphone. Not bad but just slightly annoying. I called VZW and they shipped it out overnight. Got the new one today and... It had 7.1 on and not 7.1.1. Unlocked as quickly as I could run!
Weird how both our phones went down at the same time.
I was thinking about your issue. There are only so many companies that can make that type of screen so odds are you will get a decent one.

Since there is basically no new XL's easisily available, my guess is they are replacing with returned phones or repaired phones. I doubt they update the firmware. I think once stock levels rise and time goes by, all replacement until will likely have 7.1.1

I did do an insurance claim but I'm not willing to wait months because of the back order...but ended up canceling the claim and ordered a new screen to fix it myself...didn't want to chance not being able to unlock boot loader as well. getting the screen to fix myself is 60 bucks cheaper than that assurian insurance bs through Verizon. Plus to replace the screen is easy as hell...took apart my screen today to see how difficult it would be lol

That is true ! I've asked if I would still have warranty if I had them do a whole conversion from black to white and Ubreakifixit said nope. I contacted google and they said that is fine , if there is no physical/water damage then I still will have the 1 year warranty. So I'm going to have them change my pixel to white since mine is cracked on front and back. Then have google swap my Verizon model for a Google play model.:fingers-crossed:

It's easier replacing the whole LCD assembly since you don't have to worry about cracking the old lcd under the old glass. Oh and don't forget to buy tempered glass protector now haha.
I have to replace the LCD on my Pixel. Can anyone tell me what kind of adhesive I need? Is 3m double sided scotch tape good enough, or do I need some other one?

For those who are/have/and still experiencing specs of dust underneath the touchscreen....
... I will endeavor on a journey using iFixIt.com's Nexus One Teardown Guide. There will be no need to document me taking apart the device, however, I will be taking pictures of the dust, the location of the leak, me cleaning the device, and an attempt to seal the leak. I bought the essential tools from ifixit.com: Phillips #00 Screwdriver, T4 Torx Screwdriver, iPod Opening Tools. This came out to a total of $12.85. I then used a $5.00 coupon code (11221FIXIT) bringing me down to $7.85. There is no sales tax unless you live in CA. Shipping was $3.17.
Long story short - I was tired of looking at the dust, tired of the HTC folks say "sorry, you voided your warranty" and "sorry, we only send you a refurbished device, not your own or a new one". So, I spent the $11 and I'm going to fix it on my own. WISH ME LUCK.

*******UPDATE*******
Alright folks - I took the time out of my day to open my Nexus One and clean off the dust underneath the screen. I took pictures. Here is my assessment after completing this daunting task.
PROS
-NO MORE DUST!!!!!!
-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MORE DUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!!!!
CONS
-Takes a lot of time (2.5 hours)
-There is now a smear on the bottom of the screen now - it can only be seen in direct sunlight
-Putting it back together is an ASS-PAIN. Such a pain in fact, by the time I was finished there were still 2 screws left, and 3 weird rubbery pieces that I left out.
The phone is back together and in excellent working shape
All in all, only do this if you have the amount of dust under your screen like I did. I am happy with the results but I think I want a BRAND NEW PHONE. Oh well.. Enjoy the pics.

Good luck, can't wait to hear what you find. Can you take pictures pre-doing this all? Specifically of the dust build up?
Ok, most important thing to do. Make sure you are in a clean room! Maybe even a Clean Room. Otherwise you will end up putting more dust in than you take out. Cheapest way is to run a hot shower and let the place fog up and then settle to get the dust out of the air. But probably not a good thing to open your phone while it is still fully fogged up as you'll get condensation inside it

Yes, of course I'll take pictures of the dust BEFORE I disassemble the device. And then I'll take the AFTER pictures when it's reassembled.

Awesome tip! Thanks.
yeah i cant stress enough to make sure you do this in a claean environment. i tried doing this with my nokia e71, and i never could get the screen lcd clean no matter what i tried! as i put it back together, little particles would just gravitate to it no matter what. i would wipe and try to quickly put it together, more dust. tried again, more dust. over and over.
here at work we have cleanrooms at a extremely high rating. if only i could use them to disassemble my smartphone.

if you get a nexus just press down on the bottom by the capacitive buttons. If the screen creaks or feels like it gives just follow what Uansari1 did and heat it with a hair dryer for a few seconds from like 5in. away and the press firmly around the screen. It will help to reseal.
oaky thanks ill keep that in mind
so its a pretty common problem then?
it was for the launch nexus', im sure (hopefully) they have it all sorted out by now.

i dont think it was a common problem at all. but then i have seen threads with many people havng this issue. so far my nexus has not had this issue at all and its over 3 months old. so i dont know. but i DO know that if you look in the iphone forums, dust under the screen threads are all over there too. even windows mobile forums have the same threads. so it seems like its a problem with most touch screen phones.

They put a $500+ hold on your credit card. They won't tell you that you will lose that money if you've unlocked your bootloader. My guess is, they're hoping you've voided your warranty, sent in an unlocked phone, and now they keep the money. I also asked them how much it would cost to repair it... They estimated $179. BULL****.. I KNOW.

Nah. Theres alredy a big thread about this. They do put a $530 hold on your CC. But the hold is gone once they receive the phone. If they WANT to charge you the its usually a $28 repair fee or you have a choice of sending back the replacement phone.

I have been selling a couple a week at the cell phone store I work for, and haven't seen this on a single one of those. I would say all in all, I have sold about 20 Nexus One now.
Personally, I think the issue goes back to these shipping out during January during the coldest period of the winter, even having freezing temps all the way into Texas... I suspect that that phones got cold enough that through contraction and added brittleness of the adhesive in a cold state, the seal broke.
So the phone worked fine, I brought it downstairs, start using the computer, check my phone and the screen is black with some lines, and what looks like a crack on the bottom near the buttons.
I called T-Mobile, who said it was a known issue, since corrected in newer shipments, that they usually replaced completely in-store, but there's no stores up here in Montreal. So then two reps both separately told me to call the factory/manufacturer HTC, who then told me that they don't cover screen problems, at all, ever. All they can do is initialize the normal off-warranty repair service for like 200$ and be phone-less for about a month.
I find this completely unacceptable and could use some help or HTC/TMO reps on the forums? This is my first phone and I'm not used to dealing with this...

my fiancee's G2 screen went out last night, it looked like it shattered from the inside because there was a 1 1/2 inch crack under the glass. she says it was working perfectly fine, put it in her purse and a few mins later it wouldnt turn on. she didnt drop it or hit it against anything so i have no idea what happened. exchanged it at radio shack today (only had it 10 days) and the guy said it had to have been from a heavy blow. now i know she is capable of abusing phones but i believe that she didnt this time.

i had the exact same thing happy to my phone last night. i have only had it a few days. this is not a good sign for the G2 phone. i barely used it; it was never dropped, etc. there appears to be some kind of crack under the screen near the home button on the phone (maybe from pushing that button?) and the screen is out. the phone is still functional and can get calls, etc, but i cannot see anything. i am going in today to get it replaced but this worries me a lot about owning this phone.

It looks pristine when the screen is off. I'm not knowledgeable about screens but it must be an inside layer, broken from a pressure or heat problem?

Pressure... unlikely. Heat and cold contributes a lot when it comes to glass. My old phone cracked when it was really cold back where I use to live.

Mine did that too. Called T-Mobile and they made me add the $6 monthly warranty and said i could remove it from the account after the swap
They made me reboot the phone and then check the moisture sticker thing under the battery. I just told them what the screen was doing and they replaced it. I had the insurance but I didn't have to use it for the warranty replacement.

Did yours have a little crack near the buttons, but not the actual glass?
I have the same EXACT issue in the same EXACT spot. Noticed it when i took my g2 out of my pocket. The glass has no cracks scratches or anything!!Called tmobile the next day...the guy told me to take it a store to determine whether its "cosmetic" damage or not. Went to the store and they said its physical damage and wouldnt be covered. Called customer service at the store and she explained to me that this was a known issue. She called it "lcd bursting". Ordered my phone right then and there. Once i get the phone she was i have to send in my old one so that they can determine whether its covered under the warranty or not. If not its $279. Have any of you guys gotten charged the $279 if you had the small crack by the home buttons??
I never had this issue before... I have a little mytouch bag for my g2 and never put in my pockets... had this phone for hell of a long time. Wish you don't got to pay dude and if they do make you pay start b***hing at them
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I sent it in and they want me to pay 190$. And they didn't even know about ANY known issues. I told them to have their "technicians" recheck it with specific instructions.
my screen arrived today, and its all fixed. If worst comes to worst you can buy a new screen and do it yourself for so much cheaper than that.
Well my Screen already went the way that some of us in the forum has went.
This really sucks, I have a workaround to make it work sometimes I just press a little hard in the bottom of the part that doesn't work, turn off the screen and then the phone works like new again but that is something that I don't like to do because it could damage the phone.
Here is a picture of the damaged part:

Do you guys recommend me to buy this digitizer? : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251084340056
I REPEAT IS THE DIGITIZER NOT THE LCD, THE LCD IS WORKING EXCELENT, ALSO THE PHONE ( TEGRA ELITE )
Thanks for all and God bless you!
Is it the screen visually blanking out in that area or is it not touch sensitive in that area? If it is visually not displaying in that area of the screen you need to replace the LCD. If it is not touch sensitive then you would need to replace the digitizer. If your replacing the digitizer, I'd spend the extra $10 and buy a new one. The one that you linked to is used and looks like there is a scratch or a crack at the bottom. That's my two cents.

Lol I did not post the right one, I will change the link right now; is the ditigizer, I made everything to make it work and really it works but then it stop working after some time, I think this is related to the crappy digitizer and also the heat they recieve makes them unsusable after some time....
I had a similar problem (except my strip was horizontal), and I tried the PDS fix, new ROMs, and a pile of other calibration tools, and arrived at the conclusion that a warranty repair was needed. It sucks, but there are a bunch of folks on these boards with this exact problem. I think the digitizers were cheaply made.
As an aside, I got no static from Moto for having an unlocked bootloader (though I did flash the sbf before sending it in). Good luck to you.

Yes but I don't have warranty so my only option is to buy the digitizer.
Got the same thing with mine... . Warranty only run out 2 weeks ago.. And wifi and headphone jack all stopped working in the last week

I dropped my phone and cracked the screen.
I have that exact same digitizer from that seller with frame on its way to me, I bought one that was just the glass and had to be adhered to the existing frame, and the brand new OEM digitizer had dead zones. Hopefully this one will be a bit better.
I will let you know how it works!
I have bought two from these guys and could not be happier.
It's the easiest way to do the repair for sure. Just be prepared for a hard time with the ribbon cable if you have medium or above sized fingers.
It became much easier when I grabbed a pair of these...
There's something about the ribbon cable for the volume buttons being very fragile. I didn't have any trouble, just be aware, and if you have to mess with it be careful.
Oh, they ship it fast too!

Okay thanks please let me know =) I will buy it next week (Monday)
i got caught in the same trouble! exactly the same place
it is temporarily solved when i flashed it with the 4.5.9.141 service pack(im still in the official rom and bootloader locked!)
So i think the problem should be attributed to the drivers!

I don't think is the same problem as yours =P.
I just punched my digitizer the other day and everyting started working again (LOL ) But after a fews minutes it stopped working again. So I don't think an official ROM with LOCKED bootloader will solve my problem. =D
Anyways I'm buying a new digitizer tomorrow from this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251084340056
Also one more question guys...
Do I need anything else? Because I have some links on Amazon about "2mm Tape" and other about "Digitizer atrix Touch Screen adhesive" OR Does this one no need the tape because it already comes with the Frames and with the Adhesive?; Can someone confirm please.
Thanks for all and God bless you.
Did you look at the screen replacement guide thread? Everything you need to know is there.

There shouldn't be any need for adhesive as the only adhesive needed is to stick the glass to the frame and its already attached. My last tracking update was in Atlanta on the 13th, so hopefully it is in the UK by now and clearing customs! I'm looking foreward to getting my phone back working!

Temporary Solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719653
Screen came this morning and fitted no problem, was much easier to fit than the standard ones you get which require a hairdryer and glue. It looks perfect and works perfect!
After over a month I am so happy to have my phone working again!

The Digitizer just arrived and I replaced it with no problem, I don't know why people say that the ribbons are a problem, they didn't (I don't have bigger hands!). Also in order to put the new one I had to break the old digitizer inside, not outside so it can be used again if my new digitizer brokes (What I don't want never that to happen).
Thanks for all your help and God bless you all.
Well I ordered My G-Pad on 12/31/2013 and payed $300 to get it here with free shipping. Arrived today and must Say Im fairly Disappointed. The item came and as most was not sealed but I didn't mind that. It had dust all over the screen and has 2 scratches on it. You would think they would wrap these things up or something. Anyway turned it on an I immediately noticed the light bleed on the screen at the bottom. Immediately decided this one is going back as soon as possible. I also have scuffs on the back of the G Pad even though its supposed to be new. Tired Wiping it of to no avail. Hopefully this doesn't take to long to go back and come back to me its highly annoying. :crying:

What do you think about the light bleed, is it that bad ? Or is it not worth returning and going through the whole return process ? Anyone with similar results ?
That sucks. I though I might have a light scratch on the screen but it was acutely in the protective film on the screen. Once I pulled it off I could see the screen was perfectly fine. I agree 100% it does seem like there should be something else covering it when you open it up.
On a side note when I got my nexus 7 for christmas it had plastic film all the way around the device kinda like a clear envelope. I went through two nexus 7 before giving up and ordering the g pad

Yeah I would have ignored the scracthes it's the light bleed that's really bothering me. Yeah the scratches are on the metal on the back not the screen. From what I saw I love it though. Going to request an RMA.

Sorry Man..
Your Pics clearly show this was not this unit's 1st time leaving this vendor..
May I offer a suggestion?
Return this unit for a REFUND.. save or come up with $60.00 more and purchase a Google Play Edition from Google.. If you are not able to walk into a BestBuy to make your purchase. Come'on there is no question this unit was used and returned. just pay a little more and get one from either Google or BestBuy that will more than likely be a factory fresh unit.. That's my suggestion anyway.

Truthfully that light bleed is dependant on what brightness you are at because if that is on greater than 50% brightness you likely will not notice it on anything but an all black screen in a dark room. Usually in this lighting environment I tend to have brighness down below 20%and light bleed is near invisible

I don't know about it being used. I just got mine in from Newegg today, and it had the same dust, granted no scratches. The scratches were probably from someone carelessly checking the boxes to check for colors. Pretty annoying, and unacceptable, but I doubt it wasn't new.
Hopefully you get a better screen as far as bleeding goes. It honestly didn't seem as bad as others I've seen, most tablets have some amount of bleeding if you have it in the right light.

Eh..
That much dust to flip the cover up and check color
What type of room then are they checking color in? That's a lot of dust to just be flying around..
That's why the best option is for the OP to just pony up, walk into a BestBuy ( if available ) and check the unit immediately onsite.. if after turning it on there is lightbleed beyond what the OP is comfortable with.. he can pick another unit right on the spot and walk out 100% satisfied.. That's what I did. and things work out quite well.

Hello friend.
The scratches at the back of the device is sign of this tablet at least having been laying on a table and being picked up..
As for the dust on top of the screen protector, that could be anything, it could have been sliding in there thru the unsealed package, it could have been in the shipping box.. Or the room they kept the stock in could be dirty as well..
The light bleed at the top right corner of the screen, on the picture, is horrendous. I have not seen anything as bad since my Nexus 7 2012 edition.
I am sorry about your experience.
RMA.

FWIW, I've bought lots of stuff from Newegg over many years. I've generally had a good experience with them. The only issues I've seen in the past is that sometimes they didn't package things well for shipping (hard disk drives, e.g.). I bought my G Pad from them last month, and it arrived in perfect condition with no defects that I've noticed. (My G Pad has the blue line, but I don't consider that a defect.)

That is exactly what mine looked like from newegg, received today. The previous one I had from Best Buy looked the same minus the white dust.
Wow, I would cancel my order immediately and get the Google Play Edition from the Play Store. Mine was in sealed package. Works out of the box very very nice. yes, you will spend a little bit more money but it will be well worth it.
there is little doubt that the one you received was a returned item that had been returned for the same reasons you don't want it.
This is exactly how I received mine too. 2 small scratches on the back plastic and also unsealed, looked like it was opened already.
Didn't have any dust though.. Came from a Belgian online shop Conrad.be
Not gonna bother sending it back though..
Fyi best buy has them for 299 again. I will be going in for a price adjustment!!

Update !
They sent out my RMA and I got it today. Unlike others hey didn't learn from me and still sent an unsealed one. Dust was still all over the screen cover lol. There were some smudges again on the back so this must be a manufacturing issue. Plus, I don't want to bother to send it back again and wait another week+. The light bleed seems to me to be less than the first model I had so Im satisfied for now. Thanks Everyone , its a great tablet so jump on it while you can.

My original M8 suffered from the infamous cloudy camera. I got it replaced by T-Mobile, and it's been maybe three months now and the replacement M8 did the same. My buddies M8 started to do the same thing about a month ago, and he used Zaino Wax to buff out the camera cloudyness away.
I noticed yesterday that mine was doing the same thing again when I tried to take a picture and it wasn't focusing. Tried to clean it, and at first I just thought it was dirty. Picture wasn't important, so I ignored it. Then last night I went to get a drink with a buddy of mine, and tried to take a picture, and the camera wasn't focusing. Tried to clean it again, and that's when I noticed the cloudy camera again.
So I woke up this morning, found some turtle wax, put some on a terry cloth, rubbed a little on the lens, let it dry for a couple of minutes, and then buffed it off. Sure enough, it started to take some of the cloudyness away. So I did it again about three more times, and now the cloudyness is down to the edges. I was excited that it worked, that I ran over to my laptop to make this thread.
I was thinking about getting another replacement, but this is a better alternative for me. I don't want to be setting up my phone all over again every few months for the same issue.
This is what I used.

I found the Mr. Clean Magic eraser to work very well too. I actually prefer the eraser because there is no risk of water getting under the lens. You squeeze it all out before rubbing
Toothpaste works too. I just put a dab on the end of my finger and rubbed the lens in a circular motion for a bit. Cleared up all but the edges which don't seem to bother anything. My guess is if I used a Q-Tip instead of my fat finger I could get the edges clean too.
I had the same problem and I used toothpaste. But my concern is whether we have rubbed off the anti glare coating?

I followed a guide and used a tiny amount of Brasso on the end of a cotton bud, it's like the phone's brand new again. Like you, I'm concerned I've removed something which should be there but the camera was unusable prior to doing this. Mine was bought in April, has been in a case, screen protector applied since day 1, handled with constant, real care but the scratches on the lens were something else!
Pictures of the lens pre clean here and also 3 very quick shots from the phone pre and 3 post clean... Was in a rush so had no artistic quality to them whatsoever!

I said that the coating on the lens was rubbing off and there is a lot of discussion online about it, so its not just mine. The HTC rep said "yeah we know, we had a meeting about it today, just send it in and we'll take care of it". I asked what the coating was, olephobic? He said he wouldn't say and wouldn't comment on what the course of action is. I thought, ok, as long as you fix it I thats all that matters.
I guess they will replace the lens glass with something other that what came out of the factory. No point in putting the same thing back on there. He probably couldn't comment as this will effect every single One M8 which means they would all have to be recalled. Expensive!

That's the video I watched and got the idea from prior to doing mine.So far... so good but it's only been a day, see how the lens holds up after prolonged "quick rub before the shot" with shirts, jumpers, sleeves, all the normal day to day stuff.
You've got to be kidding me.
After the M7 camera fiasco, they allowed this to happen?
My wife just got hers last week, and it's having reboot and connectivity issues (completely stock, unrooted)
I'm going to have her exchange it for the S5, I'm done with HTC's idiocy.

To each their own. But it's hardly idiocy. It's simply a minor design issue. Mine has scratches on and focuses and shoots perfectly fine.
As for reboots and connectivity issues, these are things any manufacturer can have, but I wouldn't take the bandaid phone over a HTC One even if the HTC One had no camera at all.

The Purple/Pink tint issue was the likely BIGGEST camera fiasco the mobile industry has ever seen, and it cost HTC tons of money and hurt their reputation badly. You can find countless threads here and elsewhere about it
And then they completely drop the ball on the NEW phone and allow another camera issue?? If it were a "minor" issue, they wouldn't be taking them back for repair no questions asked.
It's obviously a widespread debacle, and not only that - they should have listened to the previous One (M7) owners as they had an issue with the CHEAP camera glass cover on the M7 which cracked for NO reason at all and was easily scratched.
Choosing to ignore that issue and causing themselves another heartache on their flagship phone is idiocy IMO. What would you call it?
What if i cant that in my area do i can use my own
Just kidding mate :good::good: Thanks for the idea

How did your repair go? Ironically I should have just looked on here. I had noticed this same scratched camera coating though my phone has been in a case since Day 1, is always in a pocket with no other items and I never place it on tables, etc. The chat guy says that cosmetic is typically not covered but in this case we'll cover it. I ship my phone and get an email two days later that the repair will cost $300 if I want the camera fixed. Or I can choose not to fix it but will have to pay administrative costs? Ugh.. would have not bothered if the chat guy hadn't literally said most cosmetic is not covered but we will cover this repair. Plus of course I've been without a phone for a week now but would have not bothered if it's gonna end up costing me $40. Poor form HTC..
