How to fix HTC One M8 camera issue - One (M8) General

My original M8 suffered from the infamous cloudy camera. I got it replaced by T-Mobile, and it's been maybe three months now and the replacement M8 did the same. My buddies M8 started to do the same thing about a month ago, and he used Zaino Wax to buff out the camera cloudyness away.
I noticed yesterday that mine was doing the same thing again when I tried to take a picture and it wasn't focusing. Tried to clean it, and at first I just thought it was dirty. Picture wasn't important, so I ignored it. Then last night I went to get a drink with a buddy of mine, and tried to take a picture, and the camera wasn't focusing. Tried to clean it again, and that's when I noticed the cloudy camera again.
So I woke up this morning, found some turtle wax, put some on a terry cloth, rubbed a little on the lens, let it dry for a couple of minutes, and then buffed it off. Sure enough, it started to take some of the cloudyness away. So I did it again about three more times, and now the cloudyness is down to the edges. I was excited that it worked, that I ran over to my laptop to make this thread.
I was thinking about getting another replacement, but this is a better alternative for me. I don't want to be setting up my phone all over again every few months for the same issue.
This is what I used.

I found the Mr. Clean Magic eraser to work very well too. I actually prefer the eraser because there is no risk of water getting under the lens. You squeeze it all out before rubbing

Toothpaste works too. I just put a dab on the end of my finger and rubbed the lens in a circular motion for a bit. Cleared up all but the edges which don't seem to bother anything. My guess is if I used a Q-Tip instead of my fat finger I could get the edges clean too.

I had the same problem and I used toothpaste. But my concern is whether we have rubbed off the anti glare coating?

I followed a guide and used a tiny amount of Brasso on the end of a cotton bud, it's like the phone's brand new again. Like you, I'm concerned I've removed something which should be there but the camera was unusable prior to doing this. Mine was bought in April, has been in a case, screen protector applied since day 1, handled with constant, real care but the scratches on the lens were something else!
Pictures of the lens pre clean here and also 3 very quick shots from the phone pre and 3 post clean... Was in a rush so had no artistic quality to them whatsoever!

HTC recognise this is a real issue and are taking devices in for repair. Mine is being collected today. I'll let ya know what they do to fix this when I get it back

I said that the coating on the lens was rubbing off and there is a lot of discussion online about it, so its not just mine. The HTC rep said "yeah we know, we had a meeting about it today, just send it in and we'll take care of it". I asked what the coating was, olephobic? He said he wouldn't say and wouldn't comment on what the course of action is. I thought, ok, as long as you fix it I thats all that matters.
I guess they will replace the lens glass with something other that what came out of the factory. No point in putting the same thing back on there. He probably couldn't comment as this will effect every single One M8 which means they would all have to be recalled. Expensive!

i am struggling with same issue and looking for some solutions.. this morning i tried toothpaste but i didn't like the results too much
i will give a shot with following this directions, tonigh

That's the video I watched and got the idea from prior to doing mine.So far... so good but it's only been a day, see how the lens holds up after prolonged "quick rub before the shot" with shirts, jumpers, sleeves, all the normal day to day stuff.

You've got to be kidding me.
After the M7 camera fiasco, they allowed this to happen?
My wife just got hers last week, and it's having reboot and connectivity issues (completely stock, unrooted)
I'm going to have her exchange it for the S5, I'm done with HTC's idiocy.

Great! Thanks for the fix. I just tested out the wax thing and it worked perfectly !

Toothpaste is the best solution, I tried and is like new!

To each their own. But it's hardly idiocy. It's simply a minor design issue. Mine has scratches on and focuses and shoots perfectly fine.
As for reboots and connectivity issues, these are things any manufacturer can have, but I wouldn't take the bandaid phone over a HTC One even if the HTC One had no camera at all.

The Purple/Pink tint issue was the likely BIGGEST camera fiasco the mobile industry has ever seen, and it cost HTC tons of money and hurt their reputation badly. You can find countless threads here and elsewhere about it
And then they completely drop the ball on the NEW phone and allow another camera issue?? If it were a "minor" issue, they wouldn't be taking them back for repair no questions asked.
It's obviously a widespread debacle, and not only that - they should have listened to the previous One (M7) owners as they had an issue with the CHEAP camera glass cover on the M7 which cracked for NO reason at all and was easily scratched.
Choosing to ignore that issue and causing themselves another heartache on their flagship phone is idiocy IMO. What would you call it?

What if i cant that in my area do i can use my own
Just kidding mate :good::good: Thanks for the idea

How did your repair go? Ironically I should have just looked on here. I had noticed this same scratched camera coating though my phone has been in a case since Day 1, is always in a pocket with no other items and I never place it on tables, etc. The chat guy says that cosmetic is typically not covered but in this case we'll cover it. I ship my phone and get an email two days later that the repair will cost $300 if I want the camera fixed. Or I can choose not to fix it but will have to pay administrative costs? Ugh.. would have not bothered if the chat guy hadn't literally said most cosmetic is not covered but we will cover this repair. Plus of course I've been without a phone for a week now but would have not bothered if it's gonna end up costing me $40. Poor form HTC..

Clean the DUST out from under the Screen! UPDATED W/ PICS

For those who are/have/and still experiencing specs of dust underneath the touchscreen....
... I will endeavor on a journey using iFixIt.com's Nexus One Teardown Guide. There will be no need to document me taking apart the device, however, I will be taking pictures of the dust, the location of the leak, me cleaning the device, and an attempt to seal the leak. I bought the essential tools from ifixit.com: Phillips #00 Screwdriver, T4 Torx Screwdriver, iPod Opening Tools. This came out to a total of $12.85. I then used a $5.00 coupon code (11221FIXIT) bringing me down to $7.85. There is no sales tax unless you live in CA. Shipping was $3.17.
Long story short - I was tired of looking at the dust, tired of the HTC folks say "sorry, you voided your warranty" and "sorry, we only send you a refurbished device, not your own or a new one". So, I spent the $11 and I'm going to fix it on my own. WISH ME LUCK.

*******UPDATE*******
Alright folks - I took the time out of my day to open my Nexus One and clean off the dust underneath the screen. I took pictures. Here is my assessment after completing this daunting task.
PROS
-NO MORE DUST!!!!!!
-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MORE DUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!!!!
CONS
-Takes a lot of time (2.5 hours)
-There is now a smear on the bottom of the screen now - it can only be seen in direct sunlight
-Putting it back together is an ASS-PAIN. Such a pain in fact, by the time I was finished there were still 2 screws left, and 3 weird rubbery pieces that I left out.
The phone is back together and in excellent working shape
All in all, only do this if you have the amount of dust under your screen like I did. I am happy with the results but I think I want a BRAND NEW PHONE. Oh well.. Enjoy the pics.

Good luck, can't wait to hear what you find. Can you take pictures pre-doing this all? Specifically of the dust build up?
Ok, most important thing to do. Make sure you are in a clean room! Maybe even a Clean Room. Otherwise you will end up putting more dust in than you take out. Cheapest way is to run a hot shower and let the place fog up and then settle to get the dust out of the air. But probably not a good thing to open your phone while it is still fully fogged up as you'll get condensation inside it

Yes, of course I'll take pictures of the dust BEFORE I disassemble the device. And then I'll take the AFTER pictures when it's reassembled.

Awesome tip! Thanks.
yeah i cant stress enough to make sure you do this in a claean environment. i tried doing this with my nokia e71, and i never could get the screen lcd clean no matter what i tried! as i put it back together, little particles would just gravitate to it no matter what. i would wipe and try to quickly put it together, more dust. tried again, more dust. over and over.
here at work we have cleanrooms at a extremely high rating. if only i could use them to disassemble my smartphone.

if you get a nexus just press down on the bottom by the capacitive buttons. If the screen creaks or feels like it gives just follow what Uansari1 did and heat it with a hair dryer for a few seconds from like 5in. away and the press firmly around the screen. It will help to reseal.
oaky thanks ill keep that in mind
so its a pretty common problem then?
it was for the launch nexus', im sure (hopefully) they have it all sorted out by now.

Weird. I have called HTC. I am on my second exchange from them with the same issue. Dust under the screen. I called them last night about 6PM PST.

i dont think it was a common problem at all. but then i have seen threads with many people havng this issue. so far my nexus has not had this issue at all and its over 3 months old. so i dont know. but i DO know that if you look in the iphone forums, dust under the screen threads are all over there too. even windows mobile forums have the same threads. so it seems like its a problem with most touch screen phones.

They put a $500+ hold on your credit card. They won't tell you that you will lose that money if you've unlocked your bootloader. My guess is, they're hoping you've voided your warranty, sent in an unlocked phone, and now they keep the money. I also asked them how much it would cost to repair it... They estimated $179. BULL****.. I KNOW.

Nah. Theres alredy a big thread about this. They do put a $530 hold on your CC. But the hold is gone once they receive the phone. If they WANT to charge you the its usually a $28 repair fee or you have a choice of sending back the replacement phone.

If it's any consolation, I've had my replacement N1 since the 3rd week it was out... as someone said, as soon as I got it, I heated it up and pressed firmly all around the screen to make sure it was tightly sealed. It's still dust free today.

I have been selling a couple a week at the cell phone store I work for, and haven't seen this on a single one of those. I would say all in all, I have sold about 20 Nexus One now.
Personally, I think the issue goes back to these shipping out during January during the coldest period of the winter, even having freezing temps all the way into Texas... I suspect that that phones got cold enough that through contraction and added brittleness of the adhesive in a cold state, the seal broke.

Bought used Nexus One. Has ONE spec of dust...

So I found a used Nexus one on craigslist for a great deal and everything works perfectly fine. The previous owner had his email engraved on the phone, but that is not an issue. The screen also has some minor scratches, but none are visible when using it. However, there is one annoying problem. A speck of dust on the bottom left of the phone. I don't know how it possibly could have gotten there.
That is the most annoying part about it. One, white, speck. Should I ask him to take it back, or am I being too picky? Does your N1 have a speck of dust?
Finally, I am worried about how this will affect resale value. I know they are currently going for $200+, but with a speck of dust and an engraved email, I don't know how much it'll be worth.
Should I get a case for the phone?
Thanks.
if that's the only thing, I'd say keep it. The sealing around that area is a problem on (all? most?) N1s. I have quite a lot of dust near that corner (and I've been very careful), if you read around you'll see it's fairly common.
It's even remarkable that it's only one speck of dust enjoy your N1!
I don't have any dust under my screen, but I remember that being a common complaint here during the first few months they were available.
If you want to risk the getting more particles in there you could take it apart using the ifixit guide and hope for the best.

Yep, as far as I can tell, the spec of dust, one minor scratch on the back, and the email engraving are the only problems. I really hope that dust particle doesn't multiply.
Does anyone think I should get a case for my new N1, or should I wear it "naked." Finally, as a new person to android, please help me get to know my phone. I want a weather app like in HTC Sense, but I don't want to install weather channel or something. I have the NYtimes widget, so I don't need the default news widget. What other kinds of apps should I have?
Finally, I will probably do a review of the N1, from a person coming from a iPhone 2g. The N1 is blazing FAST!!! The same apps on N1 load in less than 2 seconds, while on the old iphone, it would have taken 15 seconds. Heavy websites like head-fi load in 3 seconds, compared to almost 30seconds on the 2g.
Forgot to say that my phone runs 2.3.4 gingerbread, which the previous owner flashed before he sold it to me.
Run naked!
First thing i did on getting my N1 is get the hairdryer on to it. Warmed the glue behind the screen edges and then push it down to get a better seal.
Obviously a bit late for you now but may help to stop any more dust getting in
if it bothers you I'll take it off your hands for $150.

I wonder???
In any case, I just discovered this amazing thing called the "wifi never sleep policy."
So here's the deal. I have no mobile data (shocker!!). That means I shut shut off my data roaming and mobile data settings. Since I am often around wifi, I just use that. I notice that when the phone has been untouched for maybe 20 minutes or so, when my desktop client gets an email, my phone does not. So I looked around, and I found out about the wifi-never sleep policy.
What exactly does this mean? The description says that it will never switch to mobile data, but I have NO mobile data. To have maximum battery life, what should I do? Effectively, if I set to off when screen is off, wouldn't it effectively turn off ALL data (wifi and mobile data, which was never on to begin with).
Also, I could opt for 2g networks only, but I don't know if that's useful.
Still you should set wifi sleep policy to never. Its super efficient even with wifi on.

I have some dust on the bottom left corner if my screen as well. I wish I knew how to get it out. It's noticeable when there's sun shining on the phone.
I opened to clean my n1 before, but new dust came back two weeks later. Just like I didn't do anything.
I don't have any dust under my screen but i do have one hair under the screen. I leave it there to remind me of the 7 year old sweat shop worker who built my phone in China. I imagine him playfully giggling with the sweatshop child worker seated next to him, then with a firm swat to the back of the head, echoing from the taskmasters whip behind him. Then franticly and quickly pressing the digitizer on my nexus into place. But not soon enough for the single hair to fall down into its final resting place. This single storyless tear , frozen in its technological tomb for eternity .
Lest we forget

Finally, I am worried about how this will affect resale value. I know they are currently going for $200+, but with a speck of dust and an engraved email, I don't know how much it'll be worth.
Should I get a case for the phone?
Thanks.

I'd say keep it too.
I don't know where the previous user engraved his email, but if its on the battery cover, then why don't you get a replacement cover from cnn.cn?
The N1 has been one of the best smartphones I've ever had!
Enjoy it!

Get a screen protector. No need for a case.
I'd take it. With mine, i dropped it a few times so I have dings on the darker gray plastic bit but othe than that it's great.
The resale of the phone is probably most affected by the email engraving.

Battery cover shows gaps

Hi everyone,
I just received my Atrix. Yes I'm back to using this beast. I have a question regarding the battery cover. On the side where it has the usb and HDMI ports the battery door closes fine and does not show any gaps. On the volume rocker side I notice there are gaps and I can see parts of the inside of the phone. I have tried several times to make sure every piece is snapped on properly but I still see the gaps. The last few tries, I pressed on it pretty hard and the gaps aren't as bad but it's still noticable. Is this a common issue with the Atrix battery cover? What should I do? I bought the Atrix brand new and shipping it back to the States is a real pain. I don't like using a case when I'm at home.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
no? my cover locks well all the way around.
Mine resides in a skin tight case 100% of the time. But, I do not have gaps either. Mine seals tight all the way around
No gaps on mine, and it's a wonder there isn't as many times as the cover has been removed for a battery pull.

Hmm, now you got me thinking it could be refurbished. There is a tiny scratch on the screen. It's only noticable when viewing a plain white screen. I did file a complaint to the retailer and they claim it's brand new. They said they could refund me 10% of the retail price. They're trying to avoid exchanging the phone because it's coming from the States. It came with the retail box. Could it be the battery door? I wonder if switching battery doors would resolve the issue.
Try calling Motorola and see if they have it in their system as having been warranty returned and then re-issued or anything.

Thanks. I'll try to call Motorola and see what they say.
BTW, do you have the AT&T version of the Atrix? If so, are you able to uninstall the AT&T apps without rooting the phone?

You will need root and best to then just freeze them with TiBu if I remember correctly. Been so long since I had to worry about AT&T bloat with custom ROM's.

Darn. It looks like I'll have to exchange my current Atrix for an AT&T version. The one I have now is with SUTEL and there's no bloatware in this version.
I don't want to root the phone once I get it exchanged until I know everything is working fine.
Is there a chance for you to post pics of your issue? I am just curious what it looks like and I am sure others are too. It could become a reference for someone else.

I asked my brother and he said it won't show up. He's into cameras and knows if certain pics will show up or not. I can ask him again. He has a high end DSLR. It is noticable in person.
I have owned over 100 cellphones. I know how to put a battery door on. Especially with my experience with Sony Ericsson's horrifc battery door issues a few years ago. I have tried many many times with the Atrix's battery door and it still shows the little gaps. The gaps are bad enough that it will collect dust inside the phone. Also on each corner of the phone, the battery door is not even.

If the gap doesn't show up with a "high end DSLR", then... is it even noticeable? I know i can use the macro setting on my t2i and it would show great detail.
Also, over 100 phones? Surely, you jest.

Yes it is noticable. It's hard to capture it because it's a black phone. If it was a white phone, it would show up. I had a different issue with a white phone and taking pics of it was not an issue.

My little sister just took that with her $80 point and shoot. There's... enough detail in that to be able to see the non-existent gap on my phone... so one would think a bigger gap would be more noticeable and even more apparent.
And... a camera that's worth at least 10 times more than hers would definitely be able to capture more detail, i would think.
So that's why i'm questioning whether it's even really a gap or just a picayune detail you picked out (say like the small gap you can see around our screen glass and the frame of the phone).

Sounds like a lighting problem. Any semi decent camera will show a gap in black on black easily if you get the lighting right. "High end camera owner" doesn't necessarily mean "knows what he is doing", and with a comment like "knows if certain pics will show up or not" I would say he doesn't really know photography.
Pics here were just taken with a colleagues iPhone 4. On the last pic I pulled the battery cover a wee bit. You can clearly see the whole area in all pics:

I'm still waiting. People are reporting C8s with screen lift, although it seems to be less frequent now than before.
Sorry for not citing specific posts, but I am following user reports closely and it is still happening.
It's possible that new units are being inspected more thoroughly but no other measures have been taken. That would make the defect harder to spot, lowering the reported incidence rate, but would do nothing to actually solidify the left side.
I would also be skeptical of anyone who claims that their unit is flawless who doesn't post a picture. This may sound paranoid, but there have been users who claimed their device was perfect until they posted a photo of a unit with screen separation.

Sorry for doubting you, but would you mind posting a photo of the horizon test? I've gotten three bad units and I'm waiting to repurchase.
To check if your screen is lifting, hold the device with the right side facing you. Look across the display and use the left bezel as a silver horizon line. If the black display is higher at any point, you'll be able to see it interrupt that silver line.
Here is an example of a perfectly flush display, looking across the device from the right side.

All of these are from the right portrait side, correct?
The first one isn't very clear. The second looks fine. But in the third one the bezel seems to disappear under the ASUS logo.
Why do you think that is?
I am on #5 now since 7/14
1st C6 - would turn off at 20% "show low low battery logo" even after calibrating bad battery? Perfect screen, exchanged
2nd C7 - bad left side screen separation/lift, exchanged
3rd C7 - dust under the screen, 2 spots , exchanged
4th C7- minor left side screen seperation/lift, just started doing the death at 20% exactly like the first C6 I had for no reason today, have had it since last Sunday and had been charging/decharging fine, just sent my wife to exchange it again. I am sure Gamestop is sick of us by now. Said it is a C8 I will edit how it turns out. Considering I am 4 for 4 with issues, I am just hoping no lift and the battery doesn't act stupid after a week or two or I'm calling it quits on this one.

As a matter of fact, the bezel does disappear at the center. I guess my C8OK does have some screen lift. But does that minor issue warrant a return? I would say hell no. If something as minor as this would discourage you as a buyer then you might have other issues.

Well my C8 has lift on the left hand side, not as bad as first C7 I had, but worse than the last.
Screen seems fine otherwise no dead pixels or dust , but obviously there is no special fix as some people keep speculating, I'm 5 for 5 now with defects
** I actually just opened it up to tighten the screws see if it would help, two screws are missing along the left side. I swear Asus needs to hire some better monkeys over in that chinese plant, I'm done taking it back for refund. Maybe around tax time they will have ironed this out

Thank you for clarifying.
If you decide to look further into the matter you will find that the physical presence of a little lift isn't the concern.
These displays have a low stress tolerance and aren't designed to be flexed at all during use. If your screen isn't securely fastened to the case, that means it will be bending even if you don't notice it, and that runs the risk of cracking the screen.
It's not a death sentence by any means, but the risk is there no matter how minor the lift appears to be. Also, there is a tendency for the separation to spread over time. The adhesive bonding the display to the left side of the case is already failing. This adhesive is flimsy and sensitive to heat according to the teardowns people have conducted.
I would not advise you to keep that (those?) units if you're going to be dealing with ASUS worst case scenario. It might be worth keeping a unit with screen lift under the Play store warranty depending on how they choose to handle these issues, but you don't want to deal with ASUS.
Sorry about the bad news.

Its not bad news at all. Your view is a dooms day view. Like most items they all will suffer from wear and tear and eventually you're going to have to say goodbye to your little gadget. Even if you get a perfect one, who's to say it won't lift in a few weeks or months? Like I mentioned before, I only paid $250 for them and in a year from now they're be worth even less.

Don't mistake my motives. I'm glad that you are happy with your purchase.
I'm only notifying you of the possible risks, which I believe warrant a mention since they do exceed the concerns of normal wear and tear.
Remember that internationally this tablet can cost much more than you or I paid for it. It's important for people to be able to make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase it, and you being honest about your screen inspection, even though you think I'm being OCD, was very helpful in that regard. You would be surprised at how many people believe facts are subjective when tech company loyalties come into play.
Hopefully your tablets won't give you any trouble. Your lift is certainly not as severe as many of the units from July that are still going strong.

My terrible experience.

So I bit the bullet and ordered an HTC Dev Edition yesterday and had it shipped overnight. Phone arrives today, open it giddy like a school girl, nothing but disappointment. Metal Panel above the LCD overlaps the side of the plastic to the point that it scrapes every time i pick it up. The data signal constantly cycles between LTE/3g/H+ (I am on ATT in Milwaukee), never had an issues with my Lumia 920. There is a very noticeable scratch in the bezel, as well as gaps between the plastic and metal nearly big enough for a fingernail. That is that.
Call in to exchange it, 1:57 minutes on hold. Exchange is now a return. Back to my N4 it seems.

I have both an ATT and Development One. There is a significant difference in radio performance between the two. I thought I had a lemon until I read this. All the development unit does is cycle through connections. The ATT branded one holds strong LTE everywhere I go.
Imo there is a huge difference in fit and finish as well. My ATT one is perfect. I have a large gap by the micro usb in the development unit.

I feel your pain. It doesn't help that the hold music goes away for 10 minutes at a time. I probably gave up and redialed 3-4 times. I'd love to tell you good luck, but I'd rather try and shy you away from the device for now. Tons and tons of reports are pouring in about the exact same build quality issues. Not exaggerating at all, I have never bought anything with as many defects. And I am not talking about the made up ones like "my screen seems to have an yellow tint", or my unit runs hot....These are bonafide poor build issues, poorly cut plastic, bent metal, plastic shavings in the headphone jack, deep scratches in the aluminum, and the list goes on.
Anyhow, I hope you have a better experience than I did.
I feel you man.... Been waiting weeks... Wait time just as long... can't believe people are getting it before people that have already ordered long before them though... Kind of making preordering them pointless.

Here's my bad experience. I was on hold for this long...

Ordered mine last Thursday with overnight shipping. When I ordered it said in stock and it would arrive Friday. On Friday it said it was shipping Friday and would arrive Monday, which kind of pissed me off since I paid for overnight shipping. Friday night it said delayed until the end of April. Monday I got an email that it shipped and I got it today. I hadn't noticed any quality issues until you mentioned the overlap, but I checked and it does have a slight edge at the top, though I don't notice any gaps. I'm not worried about that as I didn't notice it to begin with and I'll have a Spigen clear case on it anyway. What DOES bother me is that I don't get any LTE at all and it keeps going back and forth between HSPA and 3G. When I thought it wasn't coming for another week or so I went and bought the AT&T model, and today I just popped the SIM in the Dev model, so I don't know if it's a SIM thing or not. The bootloader does have a SIMLOCK option in the menu, so I have no idea what that is, but it worries me. I'll probably call AT&T tomorrow and work on getting the SIM unlocked.
