I'm sure when I first got the Wizard, a couple of ROM upgrades ago that it would turn on when I slid out the keyboard. This was great as it saved a slide AND a key press.
I haven't had this functionality for a while and am wondering what i need to do to get it back. Does anyone know?
Thanks.
I thought so too, but subsequent checking here showed that they have always behaved this way. Sliding out the kbd never activates from powersave mode.
I wonder if my original perception was because when I first got my 8125 I had a different backlight setting that turned off the backlight while still leaving it powered up. In this case, I believe sliding the kbd out will appear to activate.
i can also confirm that it doesn't wake it up
it uses a magnet to tell if the keyboard is open or not, but it never woke the device up
Does your keyboard light up when the screen is slid out? I could have sworn prior to a ROM upgrade that all the buttons would light up when sliding out the keyboard.
I've got a stock MDA Vario and the keys do not light up when asleep & slid open, and doesn't wake it up either.

Hi all. My friend and I have swapped our phones. He wanted something more pocket-friendly and more like a phone, whereas I wanted something with a bigger screen to sling in my bag - so it seems like a good compromise.
However, the way the Universal handles power/standby and the backlight seems quite different and it's baffling me. I'd appreciate some help getting my head around it.
On my Wizard, after I'd got it all figured out, I would just pull it out of my pocket and press the power button on the top to instantly turn the display and backlight on and see what was on the screen. Then I'd press the button again to turn the display and backlight off and put it back in my pocket. While in my pocket like this, all buttons except the power button were locked, yet it would still receive calls and get my e-mails and texts: ideal. If I wanted to shut the whole thing down I would *hold* the power button and it would shut down completely.
Now I've got the Universal. Pressing the power button seems to have the same effect, but holding it now turns the backlight off. Here are my questions:
1) Why would you want to do that?
2) Why is there a separate backlight button too, if holding the power button toggles the backlight?
3) How can I turn the device fully off (apart from removing the battery temporarily)?
4) How do you generally use *your* Universal? Do you just close the screen and toss it in a bag/pocket? Or do you leave it in tablet mode and press the power button?
Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: Swapped my Wizard for a Universal: power button confuses
Wow, your friend sure got ripped off. I came from a Wizard myself, the Universal is a much more refined machine. I will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.
1) Why would you want to do that?
I have no clue, I wonder why there are so many backlight options.
2) Why is there a separate backlight button too, if holding the power button toggles the backlight?
Same answer as above
3) How can I turn the device fully off (apart from removing the battery temporarily)?
I've never had to fully turn it off, even in the factory manual they don't tell you. They give you a run around answer I'll quote here,
"Power button: Press and hold to turn the screen backlight on and off (you can also do this using the screen backlight button see page #9 & #17) When you close the lid the screen goes off; if you leave the lid open, the backlight will time out and then the screen will switch off. A single press of the power button will turn the screen on or off. The phone is turned on at startup, after the SIM pin is entered. If the screen goes off, the phone will still remain connected."
4) How do you generally use *your* Universal? Do you just close the screen and toss it in a bag/pocket? Or do you leave it in tablet mode and press the power button?
Becareful closing it and tossing it in your bag, the screen likes to make contact with the keyboard leaving marks on the keys and screen ( ) People usually put a small screen wipe rag in between the screen and keyboard before closing or get a silicone case. I have the silicone case, when I'm out it's in my hands since I'm not a belt clip person or in my pants pocket when it fits  The only time it's in tablet mode is when I'm surfing the net or playing a game; I don't like to leave it in tablet mode as it exposes the screen to accidents.
My friend is pretty happy with the Wizard - it suits his needs better and it is amazing what a difference the 'compactness' makes if you use it mainly as a phone rather than a PDA.
Okay, so it seems you can't turn the Universal off. I always plug my phone in to charge at night, so I'm not worried about that.
I was really impressed with the ruggedness of the Wizard. The screen never got any scratches on it. I wish they made iPods out of the same material!
When you use the Universal as a phone, do you tend to use it closed? I feel sort of silly holding a chopping-board sized slab up to my ear. Maybe I'll get a Bluetooth headset

To be honest, I've only used the Universal's earpiece once or twice. It's too big to hold up to your ear for talking. When sitting at your desk, or when you're playing with it, people are always giving you the "Wow!" look but when you have it up against your ear as a cell phone they laugh...and laugh
I always use a bluetooth earpiece/headset. I have either my Bluespoon AX2 or Motorola HT820 with me at all times. Bluetooth is a must! I rarely use the Wizard's earpiece either, always bluetooth on the Wizard as well.
ok well during the day and everything its fine but now as I type this message and when I'm generally in landscape mode using the keyboard my hermes backlight has a life of its own it turns on and off randomly...
no its not power saving, I'm sim unlocked but I now run the 1.09 bootloader and latest HTC rom and I'm getting to wits end. sometimes it can be fine other times not.
some may think what is he on about but it is happening to me and I don't even think its a hardware fault either or at least I hope not as most of the time my backligt behaves! anhone got any bright ideas as to what could be causing the flicking?
I have had a problem where the keyboard, when slid out, does not light up. Is this what you mean?
If so, I went into the control panel, switched it off in the settings and then closed it all down. I then went back and enabled it, and did a soft reset when it had all calmed down. No problems since
HTH
I get a similar problem, when I have read a message and switch to landscape mode and start typing, the backlight turns off and as i continue to type it will switch itself back on.
its a pain in the arse and is one of the bugs im hoping to get rid of on a rom update.

The keyboard has a light sensor. It will only light up in dark conditions. Maybe yours is playing up, or the light conditions that your using your phone in may be the cause.
I turn my sensor off so the backlight is always on, Settings---->Buttons----->Backlight
S.K.
Its the screen backlight that goes off, not the keyboard lights.

Hi,
Not sure if anyone has experienced the same problem. Sometimes whilst typing away on my V1605's (HTC640) keyboard the screen's backlight would suddenly turn off but will come back on when I press any key. The time between a key been pressed and the backlight going off is very short, less than a couple of second so can't be power saving mode kicking in.
So far I have only experienced this a few times but it's annoying and does make me think whether there is a problem with my unit. Will Vodafone UK inspect or even replace my unit bacause of this. Because if happens so rarely I can't even walk into a shop to show them the problem.
TIA.
Dave.
Yeh I have the same thing on my M3100. Probably some kind of hardware/software delay, given how slow my M3100 can be at times.
I also had this strange behaviour, in order to solve that I simply disabled the keyboard sensor. Now I have the backlight of the keyboard all the time which is far from being an issue for me.
I disabled the keyboard sensor from day one so that the backlight is on all the time. I'll try enabling it to see if it fixes the problem.
Hey guys,
I've recently flashed the latest AMP (Wm 6.1) onto my G4 and i've noticed an annoying problem.
I don't know if it's the ROM or the fact that i've not used the device in a while, but it seems the slightest nudge on the screen will turn the device on and light up the backlight.
This is really annoying and will kill my battery quickly. Is there any app or registry tweak that can disable the slide mechanism from activating the power i.e. if the power is off, opening the slide will not power the device on - ONLY the power button will do this.
Any suggestions?
Well, that IS the way that the Wizard works! It shouldnt be turning on when you slide the screen if the device is in sleep mode...so I would say that it has something to do with the ROM. Try hard-reseting or flashing again my friend and see if it helps!
Yeah, but we are talking the slightest tap or millimeter and it turns on.
I'm going to try a reflash and hoping that it's not a hardware fault.
Im sorry, I said that wrong. The Wizard SHOULD NOT turn on when you open the keyboard, if you have powered it down with the power button or it has turned off automatically via time-out. It should only wake from sleep if you press the power button, sorry for the confusion!
Though it does indeed still seem like a ROM problem to me!
For the past couple of weeks. I have notice losing button functions when my phone is on landscape mode (keyboard out). This slowly progressed and I have lost the directional keys the other day. Today, I slide out the keyboard and the screen blacked out. But it still works when I slide in the keyboard and use the xperia in portrait. I packed it up and called the service center for pickup and repair. Hopefully, when I get it back in a few days I will still have the interest like when I got it early December.
did you try hard reset yet ?
I haven't done hard reset, let me try now before the service comes over.
Yes, still the same after a hard reset. Even on bootloader mode, the screen slowly dies when the keyboard when slide out
Hmm
Sounds like a power management problem, like the voltage regulation is screwed or something, sliding out the keyboard tries to pull power and the voltage is dropping elsewhere killing your screen. And of course if the keyboard can't be powered properly, it wont register button presses.
Most certainly a hardware problem, they'll have to replace the circuitboard or whatever relevent part controls voltage levels I'd guess.
SE replaced my phone
Wow, glad to hear it!
