Hi ,
How is the overall performance of nexus 7 2012 after the kitkat update , kindly provide the pros and cons after the update.this could help me decide whether i should go for 2012 model or 2013 model.
If you are trying to decide between new and old, obviously go for the 2013, CPU is faster as well as more RAM. ART is also available on the new one.
As for issues, I don't have any with my 2012 so far on KRT16S. Adobe Flash no longer works because of chromium engine so if thats a big thing for you, may want to stay with 4.3

Well the old one is cheaper though.. By quite a bit actually.
So does that mean flash won't even work with other browsers?

Unless you don't have enough cash for 2013, go for 2012, it's still a great device and I never leave home without it, but 2013 is not really all that expensive, so the choice is clear.
Pros:
- it is smooth (but I factory reset it to install kitkat, so I don't know how it would've been if I just updated from previous version), but it was like this for every version
- transparent task and nav bars (with GEL or nova launcher, only on launcher though)
- clock font is the same again (in 4.2 the hours were bold while minutes were normal - I liked it this way more though)
- there's a new icon if you pull down notification bar on the right side
- battery life is good, but it's always been good
Cons:
- OTA rootkeeper doesn't work anymore, you have to manually re-root it every time
- 4.4 is pretty much the same as ICS except with slightly different icons and colors.
- lots of services still don't work outside US and couple of extra countries (play magazines, play movies...)
I don't know, it's android, it does everything, but starts to lag after a while and batteries die and such, I like my Nexus 7 2012 very much, if it broke (knock knock on the table, don't break!) I'd get a 2013 one, not 2012.

Obviously ours is cheaper but if it was me I'd rather spend the extra and have the newer hardware.. not to mention 2012 is creeping up on that 18 month EOL Galaxy Nexus just dealt with, the newer one will still be getting updates.
As for Flash its dead except for Puffin which apparently runs slow ppl talking about it here

Depends what funds you have available. I don't leave home without it and wouldn't swap it. Been working on KitKat for a while and no major issues and a lot less "lag" on 4.4 than on 4.3 :good:
Nope, OTA suvival works!
I was running a custom rom for 4.3 and 4.2.2 that was heavily optimized for this device by experienced developers on this forum. And the roms were SO MUCH smoother and faster than stock rom google provided. Now that 4.4 is available, I'm just trying out the stock rom by google, and man..I don't like the performance. There are quite often stuttering moments, and I am eagerly waiting for a stable custom rom based on 4.4. I'm pretty sure 2013 version, you don't really need to have a custom rom to make it super smooth, because I have the nexus 4, very similar hardware as 2013 nexus 7, and my nexus 4 runs very smoothly with google's official 4.4 firmware.
Hope it helps.
Well... it was with a heavy heart, that this afternoon, I took the decision to downgrade my Nexus 7 from KitKat 4.4 back to Jellybean 4.3.
Too many issues that I feel are wrong with KitKat... the lack of visual clarity on the WiFi icon, and particularly with the battery icon when the device is recharging.
But the real deal breaker for me is that KitKat 'breaks' the AOSP browser.
Although there is an AOSP KitKat compliant browser available that will run on the first generation Nexus 7, it's tied to Chromium WebView (instead of WebKit), and functionally, it's essentially identical to Chrome. And like Chrome, it lacks the speed of AOSP... further, it also lacks the one single critical feature that I believe any web browser needs to have in order to provide a satisfying browsing experience on any mobile device - and that feature is text-flow. What is the point in having pinch'n'zoom capabilty on any device, if the text doesn't reflow and reformat itself? So much effort using Chrome, panning right, left and then right again... just to read something!
Of course, it could be argued, that there are many third party web browsers on Google PlayStore that provide this functionality... and some do indeed make a pretty good stab at it. Opera Classic for example... Maxthon is another... but all too often, these browsers lack the lightening fast speed of the AOSP browser... maybe because they are encumbered with lots of useless (to me, anyway) features.
For reasons which utterly escape me, Google have been 'pushing' Chrome for Android as though it was the last word in Android browsers - IMHO, it simply isn't. There are far better browsers available on Playstore... but not a single one comes even close to the experience afforded by the AOSP browser.
All of which would be tolerable, if KitKat didn't force AOSP based browsers down the Chromium WebView path... so for me, Android 4.4 KitKat has essentially ruined my browsing experience - and for this reason, I spent the afternoon fastboot flashing my Nexus 7 back to Jellybean 4.3, and then restoring my apps via Titanium... a real time consuming nuisance, but if I wished to continue to use my Nexus 7, predominantly for web browsing, it had to be done.
I'm now back on build JWR66Y, reinstalled the AOSP browser, and everything just works... the way it should... and the way it used to... before KitKat.
Rgrds,
Ged.
The Kit Kat update was so buggy that it drove me away. I went out and bought a dell venue 8 pro today. The tablet was only 279 and has full blown windows 8.1 AND I don't have to hack it in order use flash sites.
Ota was very smooth ,and so far on my n7 2012 its running fab , no delay , only a few odd games don't work ,but its very nice so far

Upgraded from android 4.3 stock ROM with custom
Kernel,M-kernel, to android 4.4 stock ROM(KRT16s)
to find out exciting new features on KitKat.
The performance of stock KitKat is good for
a stock ROM but not great. The optimized 4.3 ROM
with M-kernel is faster and smooth without over clocking the CPU. The battery life last longer .
KitKat ROM has many new features that worth the
upgrade from android 4.3.

Oof. I was afraid of this (I use Naked Browser Pro). Thanks for confirming the worst. Had similar feelings about Chromium-based Opera (nowhere near as fast as old WebView).
An awful lot of browsers rely on WebView, which makes me think this was a clear move to make all of them suck as badly as Chrome. Not that Google was under any obligation to help their competition, but it's still a crap move.
I do wonder if anyone will take the effort to fill the now difficult speedy browser niche on KitKat. You'd have to either:
1.) Port old WebView
2.) Fork, fix, and optimize Chromium (if that's even possible), or
3.) Use an entirely different engine (possibly your own).
None of these options are great, dev-wise ... and unless we're talking about Naked Browser, any new option is almost guaranteed to come with privacy issues (ads, trackers, etc.)
Given that WebView is part of the ROM, I wonder if OmniROM would be interested in eventually fixing this.

Kit Kat performance is exactly the same as 4.3, no better or worse. It's OK but gets laggy at times. By no means would I consider the 2012 model quick at this point and you should definitely get the 2013 model.
Overall I consider the first gen nexus 7 a big disappointment in performances especially considering the initial launch video Matias Duarte is calling it "a lag free device". Yeah it is...out of the box, and after full storage and system wipe. Over time it gets so annoyingly laggy you wanna chuck it against a wall! The more storage you use the worse it gets and don't even think about adding a second profile. That's an immediate lag bomb!
Also build quality is very suspect, the screen lift/creaking issue seems to be a matter of when not if. I thought I had dodged a bullet with mine until 3 days after my warranty expired. The left side creaks like crazy, and I cracked the back cover removing it to perform several of the home !made remedies. All worked for a day or 2 then the creaking would come back! I eventually gave up and stopped caring.
I don't really feel too ripped off from buying it. Nearly a year and a half of use and 3 major system updates as well as countless minor system updates feel like I got my moneys worth. But tegra 3 isn't getting any younger and getting more and more dated by the day. Also Google proved with the gnex they are pretty cut throat with their 18 months of support policy so KitKat is most likely the end of the road for the 2012 model. Do yourself a favor and get the new one! You won't regret it

You have to be insane to get the 2012 model. Mine is showing definite age and I have barely had it a year. I think there are read write problems with the 2012 hardware that makes it laggy over time.
Get 2013 model but know that it will probably be beat up and slow a year from now. I'd say the life cycle is about a year.

The battery has not been too bad for me. There may have been a slight decrease, but I find this is common with some updates. Are you on the latest KitKat build or the first one?

The Latest.. It is possible that the reason is the root? I dit it 3days ago after the update(ROM) and I forgot to install the recovery tool .. So This morning I re-root the nexus with rectool and now for 1hour use, I lost only 5% so I don't really understand what's going on ..

I have less than required posts to post in the Pure Nexus Project thread but I believe this question applies to multiple if not all ROMs. Google Cardboard works in stock images, but in a ROM there is double vision. I've tried changing the DPI and the viewer QR but nothing has helped. I'd like to understand the issue as well as fix it. Pure Nexus Project ROM has been excellent in all other aspects. Thanks.

I honestly haven't noticed any issues. I'm running Pure Nexus as well. I just got my Star Wars Google Cardboard headset a couple of days ago though and haven't had a whole lot of time with it, but I do also have a Note 5 that's completely stock and have used it with the headset as well and have noticed little difference between the two.

Pure Nexus is still a pretty solid combination with its stock kernel. Pure Nexus was rebased not too long ago by Beans and to me it is much smoother than before. I have had absolutely zero issues with PN. Also, ElementalX does work extremely well with Pure Nexus but that is just my opinion. AOSiP is another ROM that I like to use as well. Plenty of options and customizations. It's a solid performer. Hope this helps...welcome back to the 6P.

Android 7.1 developer preview has been released for our device post your experience below
Update: Android 7.1.1 DP2 has been released
Bought my pixel c last week, trying out the dev preview.. works great so far. Running totally stock at the moment obviously not rooted or unlocked. Installed seemlessly and it absorbed my current setup with no problems. Battery seems to last much better than my previous device - asus tf300.

The only problem I have so far is it seems to loose WiFi.
You have to reboot, then it reconnects no issue.
Not seeing a big difference 7.0 to 7.1.1 and this WiFi thing is very annoying.
The other thing that is annoying Google sells 3 products under the Pixel name.
Pixel/Pixel XL get the Pixel Launcher.
Pixel C (still a current product) no Pixel Launcher. I

I'm running the 7.1.1 dev preview, and installed the Pixel launcher and the Pixel (circular) icons pack. Only a few (at best) icons are circular now, though -- Calendar is the only one that comes to mind. This is the pack that became available ~Oct. 19. Anyone have any idea how to get ALL of the icons circular, as they are on my Pixel XL?
Also, the launcher's G search button and weather/date quasi-widget is about 1/4 down from the top of the screen, and is not at the top as it is on my Pixel XL. There's just a bunch of dead blank space above it. I'm wondering if this will eventually be fixed for the Pixel C, or if it's going to be something like the gigantic hunk of dead space that was below the stock digital clock on the home screen of my Nexus 10.
FWIW, no wifi disconnect issues on 7.1.1, but I had none before for that matter. And I've never disabled location or bluetooth scanning.
