After looking around for a while, I began to see a pattern. 95% of the listings I could find stated that their headunit runs on Android 9, or even 10. One was so bold as to claim Android 10.1. Seriously? 10.1 doesn't even EXIST!
I noticed this when I bought my first Android headunit.
Android 10 headunit
After powering it on, and seeing the settings menu, I noticed it didn't look anything like Android 10. Ok, so you can make a custom theme, cool, maybe they did that here. But I was still curious, so I installed an app that gives me all the TRUE information about the headunit. Suspecion confirmed! It was Android 8.1.0. Performance was TERRIBLE, but it was NOT Android 10.0. I had at LEAST 10 emails back and forth with the seller about it. They tried VERY hard to tell me that EVERY UNIT they make has Android 10. After I made a brief video showing them the information I pulled, directly on the unit itself, and it shows 8.1.0, they immediately issued a full refund. lol Dead silent after that.
So what Android OS version are the vast majority of current headunits running?
Android 8.1.0
It's not all bad. As long as the headunit has the right hardware, Android 8.1.0 will run just fine. I have an ATOTO S8 Pro. Experience is nearly butter.
But how do you tell from a screenshot, what the REAL OS version is? If you're familiar with Android at all, these will make sense.
This is a listing for the ATOTO A6. Notice how the theme of the status bar icons is pretty much in line with Android Marshmallow? Even the logo used is correct. This is believable. I give ATOTO props for being honest and upfront about this.

This was taken from Amazon. Notice the font and background here? The whole theme seems to have a HONEYCOMB feel. That's likely because the build is Android 3.x. This isn't Android 9.1. Also consider that Android 9.1 doesn't even exist, so that's two strikes. Stay away from this kind of thing.
This one was taken from an eBay listing. Here are inconsistencies that give it away. This is both Android 9.0 AND 10.0, right? Must be some kind of dual boot magic! Sorry, but no. Also, I forgot to circle the home, back and recents buttons, but you can see the icons are from all the way back in the Honeycomb days, Android 3.x. No manufacturer is going to go to all the effort to bring forward such old theme elements into the current version of Android. It's not worth the time or effort. This could be as old as Honeycomb, or as new as Oreo. I'm betting is older.
Here is one from Pumpkin. It's a more well known brand, or at least people have heard of them. But they too are playing the advertising game. Same as before, we have some very old icons, and it's not worth the time to forward port old icons. Plus, WHY? It doesn't even make it look good. I wouldn't even bet on this being Oreo. I might guess Marshmallow, at BEST. This was advertised as Android 10.
And here we have the best one! This manufacturer managed to pull off the impossible! They created Android 10.1, even BEFORE GOOGLE COULD! Ok, where do I start with this one....
1: So, yeah, Android 10.1 doesn't exist
2: Icons on the left, top one doesn't line up. Faked home screen
3: Bottom right icons, can't tap recents with microphone overlaid on it. Non-functional.
4: Right side. Internet Explorer on Android? Almost positive that never happened. We DO have Edge now, though.
This one was just full a crap.
Bottom line, when it comes to Android headunits, be VERY thorough about getting the specs on the unit you're looking to buy. This market is saturated with companies looking to sell you something they can't deliver on. Marketing makes it sound so good, that you think you're getting a sweet deal. Android 10 headunit for $60, sign me up! (Yeah, don't fall for that fake crap, please).
Don't waste your money on something you think is current. There's a very high chance you'll actually end up with a unit that should have only been worth $10.
If you would like to have a look and see what your headunit is ACTUALLY running, you can use this app to find out:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=itgeeks.fullsysteminfo&hl=en_US
Let me know what make, model, and Android version your unit is running. I'm curious to know the results!
Happened to me too
Got my money back and still using the unit. I must admit it's smooth and never sluggish once in over7 months of use
Trimis de pe al meu POCOPHONE F1 folosind Tapatalk
@chevycam94 I agree we should vigorously pursue disputes with sellers of such garbage.
I got a Carlaoer sold as Android 8.1Go that turned out to be API 23 (Android 6.0)...opened a dispute and got some money back.
Folks should be aware that even memory and flash numbers can be fudged, so a thorough inspection (Aida64 comes to mind) is required...maybe even get down to Linux level and run terminal commands.
Bottom line...yes, it's disgraceful how the buyer is being openly lied to, but in my experience the OS is a lot less important vs perfect integration with the MCU and Canbus. No OS will help you if you can't control functions or operate the unit.
They should focus on solving those problems instead of selling "Andiod 10.1" with "Internet Exploder" built in ?
I started down the rabbit hole of trying to get the cheapest head unit with the largest screen and I didn't even consider that they might lie about the Android OS. Eventually I just went with the S8 Ultra because of the support here on XDA, some limited reviews (XDA, Youtube) and whatever was the latest/greatest with good customer service.

Finally! A smartwatch that's simple, good-looking and affordable. I'm talking about the Martian Notifier.
My concern however, is that it's affordable. I don't need my watch to make my phones calls, or run my GPS, or be it's own smartphone. I simply want one that can tell me, hey, you have a text or a phone call. And the analog face will be awesome, since I prefer analog faces to digital.
My point is, I have never heard of Martian as watch makers, and am simply wondering if anyone has any experience with them, and how well they're built, and how well they work. Does the watch tend to lag behind like most cheap watches? Does the acrylic/glass face scratch easy, or crack easy? Basic watch concerns.
Any feedback is appreciated The watch doesn't release until this Summer, so I know we don't have opinions on the notifier itself, I just don't know Martian's reputation.
i really like the design of the Notifier and that clock runs on a seperate battery
i guess the battery life on the 'smart' part of it will also be pretty good, as it only has a small oled display
i do wonder if the oled screen isn't TOO small

Martian isn't totally new, this will be their fourth watch, so i guess some people should have experience with the brand
(but they might not be on XDA, i don't expect a lot of development is being done for these watches)
according to smartwatchfans it will cost $129, so that's not too bad
you'll have to be patient though, it won't be release until summer this year
Wow... this really blows my mind.
Can i get payed to post adds too? Cause the whole way you wrote that says PR.
nope, just being informative, i wouldn't write i'm worried about the size of the display if i was really doing PR for them
i AM interested in this watch tho, so i posted what i knew, with a picture because the TS didn't post one
getting paid for posting ads, if you find out how, please let me know
edit:
@ryno9100: here's first look kinda review of the passport (an older watch by Martian) by cnet, the notifier does not have the microphone/speaker
they're not too positive because it's not "that smart", but i guess that's for you to decide
$125 is temptingly cheap but im afraid like everything in life, you get what you pay for...
Having purchased a bunch of these smart watches as they have evolved, my advise would spend the extra $60-$75 bucks and get a more feature rich device. Something that is more customizable or one that can run apps. with android or Tizen. $179-199 seems to be the sweet spot for smart watches. Even if you dont use all the features, it will guarantee a following of support, which after all, is the reason we are all on here to being with.

Let's be honest. I don't need a watch that can double as my phone. I have my phone for that, and the arguement that "It's a pain in the butt to pull your phone out" is, to me, the epitome of lazy. I'd rather talk on my phone than on my watch.
@ronfurro
I simply want a watch that looks good, and let's me know, "Oh, hey. Don't forget. You have a text or a call!" I have a tendency to forget my phone on the other side of the room on silent. It would also allow me to check while at work. That's all I need. If I want music, make a call, or text someone, I'll just pull out my phone. Lol
Even as a tech guy, I'm not buying in to the smartwatch craze.
Edit:
@JarlSX Thanks for the information! I'd done a little research on their past devices, but coulnd't find much on build quality. I don't like their old ones cause they're all square, and honestly quite pricey. But for 120 bucks, if the build quality is decent, I am more than happy to get a Notifier. That's my main concern. Under someone like me (who wears out shoes in 6 months or less, and pretty much just over uses things) will it break within like a year and make me regret purchasing it.
i currently have the same ideas about smartwatches, i use my Smartwatch 2 for notifications exclusively right now, there are no apps right now i find useful
i don't even use a music remote, but that's because i have a Sony HBH-DS970 bluetooth headset, that has controls for volume/track/play/pause, don't even have to look at it to use it
i am looking forward to an update of the whatsapp extension i'm using though, the developer says he's working on showing pictures on the watch that are being sent through whatsapp, current extensions only show "[image]" or something similar
that is something the Notifier will never be able to do of course
i don't want to play games, surf the web or stuff like that, why would i if i have a smartphone with a 5 inch screen that's much more suitable for those tasks
i AM a gadget freak though and i will be following the development of Android Wear closely, even if i have no idea what functionality that will bring that i find useful
there's one thing i don't get about the Notifier, it was shown in january at CES, how come they need almost half a year to release it?
What they showed at CES, from my understanding, were working proto-types. They still had a small amount of development to do, and then production. And they'll usually run a batch in production, make sure the quality is good, then start running mass production.
Then we have to account time for them to travel to stores/warehouses. Junk takes time.
And then there's the fact that it's summer time, when people are more willing to spend money on things. Summer and Christmas.
I cannot post links . Please google Remix os
Ex-Googlers have created REMIX OS ,this is the android , i would like to run rather than BS phone os. If 3 people can do this , it means something is wrong with google.

damn if we could flash that on the nexus 9 that would be siiiick

would be sweet if they sold (or gave it away) it as a separate OS so we could run it on any hardware.

Nice score ?

So what you really want, is multi-window Android, and a launcher capable of showing running applications.
There are a number of 'hack' implementations of this idea, samsung has one, omnirom was working on one last year (haven't heard anything about it in a while), there is this "remix"... there is evidence that google themselves are working on it, but they are taking a more careful approach to it as the hardware Android runs on grows to make this feature more relevant. I sure can't see the use of it on a phone or TV, but a large tablet could benefit from it greatly, or a laptop.
For example, this commit to the Android window manager mentions multi-window: https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/baf6bef001a582fea275bf891294cf1fe9d5472e
The main thing I want is the multi window. I've gone back to my gn10.1 2014 for working out b/c constantly switching b/t google music and jefit was kinda getting on my nerves. Downside is that the gn10.1 speakers suck compared to the n9. Luckily best buy has the charge 2 on sale. almost got the UE but it seemed a but to trebley for my tastes, sounded clean though.
looks good. have nexus 9 with keyboard so the Remix OS would be cool on the Nexus 9.
No android 5.1.. no good multitasking.. supported kickstartar $1.
(If you haven't known about this yet)
You can now pledge $1 and get early access to Remix OS ROM for Nexus 9.

Well I'm backing this up and really looking forward to it...
This Rom is a bist, possibly doa. No customization, they have it locked down, no widgets, no app drawer and it has battery issues. Hopefully someone at xda gets a copy and can make it better than jide.

Are the battery issues possibly not ROM related, but device? Curious how this will run on the n9. (If you mean you are using the RemixOS on the actual Jide tablet that is)
I have the tablet and it's a 8500 battery. I believe it's a software issue. They have a way to go on software development to make this a daily driver.
Anyone received the ROM for nexus 9? I haven't received any.

They only said May, but right now Jide is likely occupied with fixing their Ultra Tablet. Users are having bugs, and I can't imagine the $1 tier is a priority.

This was a great idea, but it's out of date. Would love to see an upgraded version now that head units are coming out with the PX6 chip. If you do, please make sure to include GTA in there!
I picked up Dasaita's PX6 in the list though I probably need to scrub the market again. What's GTA? (guess it's time to start shopping again )

Awesome. Glad to hear that. I'm a little pumped for GTA. I think they are a Canadian company, and they gave me straight answers about the Chinese electronics inside. They have a different option that I like for setup. Check out the stereo styles dropdown!

They look like they're doing what Insane Audio is doing by sourcing OEM electronics then putting a custom pre-load on it, dropping it in a pretty box and adding support. For many it's probably a bit more reassuring than sourcing direct from China.

You're probably right. But they answer quickly and their english (so far) hasn't been broken. I feel like I would get better support from these guys than I do Dasaita right now. Plus, I like the alternative style they offer. I have not seen that anywhere else. They said they are working on the new PX6 model. Should be out around the near of the year.

I'm not knockin 'em at all because they're alleviating some of the concerns that many users have, domestic sourcing, support and what's likely a more stable OS configuration as they stabilize on a solid build with much less frequent updates (where you're likely to pickup bugs). My biggest issue with Insane Audio is that they're SUPER slow to update to current OSes (at last check they were still on Android 6.0, even for their PX5 platform) and they charge an arm and a leg for what amounts to only minimal value-add. GTA seems to be much more reasonably priced given what I know about the wholesale costs of the base hardware.

Nah, it's cool. I don't know them, but I get a little bit of a warm fuzzy from what little I've seen. I would look into Insane for sure, but 1) the price is just too much, and 2) the screen is too small now that I'm spoiled with a 10.2". I love that theirs is waterproof. But I spoke to them a couple of months ago, and they said they have no plans to do a new version for the JK!
I just took a look at the GTA head unit, and it looks really nice. I did notice that their FAQ here https://www.gtacarkits.com/faq-android/ states that:
Can you update the software on GTA Car Kits Android Stereos?
There is no software updates planned, unless there is a software bug that needs to be fixed. The software has been tested for a long time to be without any bugs, hence there is no software update planned for the future. Apps from the PlayStore can be updated.

That does worry me from the standpoint that their video shows a custom firmware on there that appears to clean up a lot of the Chinese firmware config apps (like steering controls for example) are different. I emailed them for clarification, and will let you know what I heard back.
I also asked them about ADB passwords, whether or not the EQ works in all modes (apps, FM, and Android Auto), etc.
There's a PX6 on AliExpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/330...chweb0_0,searchweb201602_1,searchweb201603_52 that appears to have the same 3-piece restyle trim as GTA, which looks interesting.

I didn't see any one-piece units. I also did not hear anything back from GTA, so that's not a great sign of customer service.
Phoenix recently launched a PX6 unit for my truck. It's basically the only aftermarket system out there right now that works (somewhat) seamlessly with it. Needless to say, a bunch of us bought them and there's a pretty decent following on FB for them. Unfortunately, Phoenix's support is pretty much useless and almost entirely non-existent. There are quite a few little annoying bugs that really need to be worked out and some features that really could be added. We're not holding our breath that we'll ever get a response from Phoenix.
I spent several hours searching and reading today and have a little better understanding of exactly what hardware we're dealing with and just ended up more confused.
Can anyone tell me what type of unit this is (i.e.: MTCB, MTCD, other?) so I can at least narrow down my research on figuring out what can and can't be done with this thing?
This is what we have after Phoenix's most recent updates:

The MCU type relates to the manufacturer so the MTC series is made by Microntek and you can tell by the filename in the MCU version. I have no idea who make the MCU for your HU. The SoM appears to be from ZXW but again good luck finding any info on that.

There is ZXW voice recognition software on them, so you're probably on to something there.
I'm kind of surprised that there's not more info out there on these. I was under the impression that Phoenix has been selling quite a few of them. They're really awesome little units, but they'd be a whole lot better if I could tweak a few things!
I looked at one of those when I researched my HU and at the time it seemed Phoenix was pretty responsive with support and updates. Maybe they lost their dev. I wouldn't expect them to be a big outfit probably just a couple guys in all. I picked a PX5 MTC unit for the support, customization options and the IPS screen.
Here's a couple threads you might want to keep tabs on.

Their support is mediocre at best. They've release a few updates and taken care of major problems, but there are lots of little bugs that they don't seem very interested in addressing. And there's zero documentation on how these things are setup and what some of the settings do. We get bits and pieces here and there, but there's also a huge language barrier that seems to make it harder to explain what some of the issues are.
It's my understanding that all of their stuff is made by a single company in China and they're just reselling. It's probably only a matter of time before other resellers will have the same unit and maybe that will open up some more support channels.
They probably get their units off Alibaba. I remember comparing specs with everything I could find on Aliexpress and the one I was looking at appeared to be very similar to the one made by ZWNAV. They don't have the best reputation either, another reason I went with what I got.

I think it's probably the other way around. Once the chinese manufacturer starts making units for one reseller, they'll sell them to everyone else too.
I do know that Phoenix has some involvement in the design/R&D on these as they used at least a couple peoples' trucks to probe and sniff the factory wiring for the integrated HVAC controls and the steering wheel controls, and of course, the wiring harnesses. I'm sure they just ship that info off to China for them to design the final product.
So far Phoenix is the only known vendor selling the radio for my truck. But I'm sure it'll eventually pop with others.
Any more info on these? I'm looking at the 12.1 vertical units for my Nissan Rogue. In the demo video, I noticed the passenger-side knob is labeled "teek" instead of "seek". Hopefully the final shipping units have been corrected. Anyway, just looking for more real world users of these units...
Been quite a while since I had a Nook HD but recently I've been thinking about getting another one, the 7" model (or the 9" which I never owned but wouldn't mind having). Why consider such an older device used when newer devices can be found for like $50?
Because of that gorgeous 1440x900 IPS display panel, that's why.
I checked out the latest Nook Tablet at B&N a few days ago and that $50 tablet they have, it's fairly snappy and worked well but that horrid 1024x600 IPS panel in it, ugh, nope, forget it, I'll take the Nook HD over that even with the slower performance.
Was looking at the current info about custom ROMs, saw the Marshmallow/Nougat thread and was considering that as a potential, but then I remembered the devices only have 1GB of RAM, and they're quite old now (7 years basically) and also remembered that Android Go exists now and it's explicit purpose is to function better on low-RAM devices (by design, 2GB or less).
Considering the Nook HD is a tablet, and that most people will probably use them for actually reading and perhaps some light movie/TV show viewing, Android Go seems like a near-perfect potential solution.
Is there anyone out there that might be considering such a thing, if it's even doable? I haven't done a huge amount of research into Android Go - I literally just started looking into it not an hour ago so there's always the possibility it can't be done for the Nook HD/HD+, if so that's a shame because it seems to be a perfect solution for the low-RAM aspects and low powered CPU at this point in time.
Anyway, just wanted to toss the idea out there - I apologize if it's been mentioned previously, I didn't see anything in the threads/subforums and a search didn't turn up anything related to the Nook HD/HD+ either.
Would be awfully nice if this was an actual possibility, of course, maybe I'm just dreaming about it but hey, gotta dream big sometimes.
Have fun, always...

Here is the issue with Android Go on this device: the ram-saving features of Android Go are implemented on Android 8.1.0 and beyond (iirc). The Android Oreo builds for this device are not as usable as Marshmallow and Nougat builds. It may be possible to get them to work better, but that is beyond my knowledge to do that.
Have a great day!

You could just use the latest (last?) Nook rom; especially if you're not going online. I have Nougat on mine and use it to watch movies, read books and listen to music without a problem. I haven't used it to surf the web in a long time. For online I went back to Windblows. Got tired of waiting and hoping someone would see the Nooks as ARM devices with more options other than android and moved on to a win 8.1 tablet that could dual boot lightweight Bionicpup64 (Linux). Windblows for app makers who can't/won't deal with Linux and Bioicpup64 for the rest.

I agree with you totally about the gorgeous screens on the Nook HD and HD+. For smaller tablets, screens have only gone down hill since then.
I'd love to hear what you finally did. I still have an HD+ in my closet.
Since my last reply I've been fiddling around with my Nook to see how to get the most out of its now limited specs. A full fledged Go install for the HD/HD+ is probably not in the cards as it looks as though development has stopped. Depending on what version of Cyanogen/Lineage you're running you might be able to run some Go apps for a while. That is 'til the app requires a higher version of android. I'm on Nougat and was able to load a few Go apps but I'm not depending on them to keep my Nook running. I use the Termux app to run command line apps which are more cpu and memory friendly. I also use it to run HTOP which allows me to see how much cpu/memory an app is using (screen cap of HTOP monitoring while Mplayer is running). To keep abandoned hardware running you have to make choices: what do I want this item to do, will the specs allow it, if so will it do it as is or do I have to mod it or add/delete apps. I would say these are all "I" first person questions as going forward I don't see there being a robust Nook HD/HD+ development community. As a piece of consumer tech I'm surprised it lasted this long.
