Been reading this board for a few days since I got my x10 (last saturday). Major disaster today. I went out of town and I misplaced my x10. Doh.
No joke, the x10 was in a ditch UNDERWATER (at least 6 inches) for at least 30 minutes. I was calling it with another phone and I saw the x10's display in the ditch. It's definitely worth mentioning that I have the otter box case. There was definitely moisture that went in through the audio jack, but I think it protected the battery very well.
I was ****ting my pants the whole ride home. Finally when I got back, I logged on here and attempted to dry out the phone without opening it up.
After shaking all the water out the phone was buggy. The volume button kept resetting itself to zero, as if the down button was stuck. I decided I needed to open it up. I found this thread: (Thank God!!!)

Anyways, MAJOR respectz to this board. You guys saved my ass big time! Props to Sony for putting out some respectable hardware and otter box - I'm glad I spent the 45 bucks now aren't I! LOL!

If you want to dry out components, leave them in a bowl of uncooked rice.... it will suck up the moisture. I've fixed several phones my mom dropped in her morning coffee that way.
well what ilead says is a perfect solution..
thats because just drying the board the will not dry the moisture that might have made way to the internal components... also try not using the phone and keep it in the uncookd rice for atleast a couple of days..
I suggest not to use because chances are that if moisture remains it will at a later stage kill some components..

Yes, when I read your post I immediately thought of "rice"!
You should put it in a big bown full of raw rice and cover the whole phone, after of course you have removed the battery and the back cover.
You have to leave it there for 1-2 days, even more if you are not anxious.
The more, the better!
Uhm... Beside the rice.
You should rip the phone apart and put the Mainboard for about 48hrs into a 99% isopropyl alcohol bath (Inside of a closed tupperware box, so that the isopropyl won't evaporate).
Most of the chips are UBGA soldered. Thanks to capillary forces, tiny amounts of moisture will stay underneath and begin to oxidize the soldered balls over a long period of time.
Isopropyl will also suck underneath the capillary way, mix up with the moist and will evaporate for about 100% after another 48hrs, without leaving any residues.
But dont spray it with wd40 lol

All these suggestions are wrong though, and it's a lot easier to fix your phone. If it was underwater for 30 mins, just put it in a fire for 30 mins, and the effects counter each other

ah ha ha... this just about made my day..

At about 11:00 pm, I had my Nexus one in my back pocket, as my new skinny jeans have no front pocket (yes I'm a girl). We were at a New Year's party, I went to the restroom, dropped my pants and heard a large PLOP. Horrified I turned around in slow motion knowing what I would see. Nice bubbles rising from my beautiful nexus one.
Now it's in a bag of rice, and hoping for the best. Thankfully I do have a squaretrade warranty on it!!

I hope you removed the battery immediately. Put it in a SEALED CONTAINER full of rice in a warm place or under some sunlight and leave it there AT LEAST 2-3 cycles of it accumulating moisture on the lid of the container. Each day or so, change out the rice, wipe down any moisture, fill it with fresh rice and start it over. Once no moisture is on the lid, do it one more time for a day or so. Do not put the battery in or try to power it on until that point.
And keep in mind your battery might be toast regardless. You might get lucky on the phone, however.

Thanks for the info.
I think I grabbed it really quickly from the toilet, but it felt like slow motion as it seemed like I stalled for 10 seconds, watching in horror the bubbles rising. I can still see it now! haha
I did immediately remove the battery. It's now in a ziplock of rice. It's been in there since 3 am this morning. There's moisture in the corners of the screen. Will wait it out. I am currently using a cheap freebie lg flip phone and it hurts, lol.
My fear is the fact that it was blue water... they had one of those deodorant things in the tank. That can't be good.
batteries are very cheap on ebay, $6.50 shipped

Yes, it's absorbent. We used to put rice in our salt shaker down in humid Louisiana to keep it from clumping.
And yes, the comment about not re-using the rice was very funny. If this thing works, then I have to think about the toilet water tainted phone against my ear.

Dried for two weeks with no rice. Now it has those coffe lines in the resistant touchscreen 0.o

Yeah, just don't be in a hurry to use it, even if your current phone sucks compared... If you use it too fast you will kill it, right now there might be a chance.. Who knows about the blue sanitizer, but as long as it's not corrosive or conductive and leave nasty bits behind it might not be a problem.
I'd suggest a sealed tight tupperware dish with fresh rice and put it it somewhere warm or with sunlight, and again, keep changing it until it's at least past one cycle WITHOUT any condensation on the tupperware. It could be a week, but personally I'd rather be without the N1 for a week than forever.

unless you have a giant bag of desiccant in your house somewhere.
i submerged my N1 in teh sink while washing dishes. I had shoulder surgery and was on the phone doing dishes ( was my first mistake). I had my N1 in the sling with headphones on and when i leaned forward, it slid right under the running water. I grabbed it and dried it off best i could, took the battery,sim,sd,batter cover off. I then put it in a tupperware container buried in rice for 24 hours sealed and it works like it never happened
I dropped my N1 into the drain once. Fully submerged in water and I only manage to get it out a minute later.
Lucky it was in the pouch which made the water go in slower.
Put it in a dry cabinet (the ones for camera gear) for a day and happy to report I'm still using it now.

So, I couldn't resist trying, everything looked very dry. Patience has never been a virtue of mine. Soon as I woke up I stuck the battery in and fired this puppy up. I was worried, it stayed on the boot logo for what seemed like longer than usual, but she's up and running! Speaker seems to work fine, I haven't made a call yet but will in just a bit.
After dropping it in la toilette, I took off the screen protecter as well. This morning I notice when the screen is off, the reflection looks a little funny, kind of a different hue, slightly hazy reflection given off, but I'm not sure if that's just how it looks without a screen protector, or if it's a result of the blue water.
Phone is charging now, and that seems to be working fine too.

On my last day on holiday I forgot to take my phone out of my pocket before going to the swimming pool. Now it's soaked and looks bricked. Does anyone knows if there it's a chance of it working after it's dried up.
If the phone was off and the battery was removed as soon as possible. Another major factor is how pure the water is - sea water will kill your phone unless you wash it out with water with no (or as almost none) salts in it.
The phone was to be allowed suffient time to dry out. Placing it under a gentle heat (ie near a lamp) and with those silicon bags that it equipment comes with or with rice. You are normally talking about a week for drying out time.
I've heard of dripping wet phones drying out and being okay, so it's a possibility.
There's all the usual airing cupboard/bowl of rice/little crystal packs you get in your trainers/bag of salt suggestions, but I think the most prominent one is to be 100% sure that ALL moisture has gone before you try turning it on again.
Have a search through the forums, and not just this phone as this is obviously not a phone specific problem. There's plenty of advice out there.

dray it
dray the phone from back with an hair dryer with medium heat
for one hour
put it outside in the open for 4 hours
again one hour with hair dryer
and pray a lot
this is what save my nokia n95 ....so be optimistic
In my case I was saving a child from drowning ...so maybe it was an angel that thought it is not a good day to kill my phone
(try doing a good thing before the process)

20min is a long time for the phone to be in the water
It will also depend on if the phone was on or off when it went for a dip.
if it was off, there is a small chance it could be ok, leave it for a week to air and then cross your fingers.
if it was on, id take a guess that your goose is cooked.

Thanks a lot for all support! Well the phone was on :-( but the water was fresh. Anyway we have already checked out so no access to a hair dryer. Rice is not available until we're back to England this evening. Will report back if the phone survives.
Dissamble your phone completly (tutorial on youtube), place the mobo in a oven @ 100 degrees C for 5 a 10 min
Try first to dry your board with a hairdryer
I once fixed a friends (cough) iphone that was full of dirty water. Stripped it down, put the main components in clean water to wash it out, then put in a 50 degree oven for an hour. Left if over night then reassembled. Worked a treat afterwards, so there is hope. The secret is to give it plenty of time to dry out.
Use distilled water to rinse. Or even better, isopropanol; no baking needed.

it looks it's fried :-( I disassembled it and dried up but it does not show any signs of life. Will try to call my travel insurance company tomorrow to see if it's covered.

it should be perfectly dry after everything that has been done to it.
I would be tempted to take it apart and leave it for a week it 2 to dry out. There's a good chance it will work again as long as you don't turn it on while its still wet. If it was salt water or water with chlorine wash the phone with clean water well while in pieces. It shouldn't cause any damage doing this. Its best to remove all salt & chlorine as to prevent long term damage.

It takes a Minimum of 2 weeks to cure a water damaged phone. If it has salt in it, it wont work at all. IN such a case you should have rewashed it with clean water. You also need to keep it air tight with DRY rice inside a airtight box for 1 to 2 weeks. This will make sure all the fluids are extracted from the machine.
It can feel dry, but it does not mean it actually is. Also, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT charge the phone with the battery in it after a water accident for the first time again.
Well, both of my insurance policies explicitly exclude mobile phones .
So it is now like either the phone will survive or I will have to use my old Hero for the next 12 months.
So I washed it again to make sure no chlorine left and put it in a tightly closed box with a lot of yummy rice
Anyway, I do not hold my breath. I think I fried it when I thought it is dry and was trying to switch it on.

You may get it done using a hair dryer, using caution though, but it will still have internal water present, best would be to get a ziplock bag, 1/2 full of white rice....place the phone in there for 24-48hrs, it will absorb pretty much all the moisture. time will be the issue...
do not rush it.
Well...just leave it in for a few DAYS and hope for the best...not one day but a FEW...just cause it appears to be dry doesn't mean everything inside is dry yet

The best option is to go ahead and diassemble it and clean everything with high grade Isopropal alcohol. Even if it's not 100% alcohol it's better than the water thats in there. Also, tap water has chemicals and minerals in it that will stay behind when the water is gone that will short out all kinds of things on the boards. These need to be rinsed off so that when you do energize it, no harm will be done. No way would I allow it to dry without flushing everything first.
Do the rice trick first. Make sure you wait 48hrs at least before power-on. If that doesnt work you will have to try taking it apart.
I left my s2 hanging on a heater vent for the whole night a year ago when that happened to me. I dropped it in a sugary drink so it was worse , had to wash the charging port with distilled water before hanging it on the vent. Another time I had my phone in my pocket while walked into the ocean on the beach, that phone was a goner for obvious reasons.

I have done this with two different phones (a Nokia N95 I dropped in a cup of coffee and an Inspire 4G on a pool) and got life from the phones for a couple of years after it happened, basically they keep working until I replaced them.
Remove the battery immediately, go and buy distilled water and submerge the phone to flush the impurities that got into the phone; for the N95 I dropped in coffee I repeated the process about 5 times until the water was clear, the one in the pool just a couple of times.
Rinse it, do not use a hairdryer as the heat can losen some stuff inside, put it on rice for as long as you can (I waited a full week).
Done!, YMMV but this was my solution to flush impurities without disassembling the phone.

i have used 98% alcohol to flush out any water because it doesn't attract any electricity. then i put it in a bag of rice for 1 day and it worked. (so to speak you and still use the phone when submerged under the alcohol. i made a video of it with an older flip phone)

Like everybody else is saying take the battery out, and put the phone, and the battery in a bag full of rice. Wait 3-4 days and it should work. A hair dryer alongside that may not be a bad idea, and if u ever get it working, u might want to look into getting a case.

You know what's annoying?
It's when your non-technical friend on Facebook asks the public for assistance when they get their phone wet.
And you tell them to leave it in a bag of rice for 48 hours.
So they leave it in for 12 hours and then say everything is fine because it turns on now.
Ummh, hello. The 48 hours is not simply to get your phone to a point where it turns on. It's also to get as much of the remaining moisture out as possible, because EVENTUALLY the rest of the water is going to start corroding the phone internals and cause flakey problems down the road.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not but that is _not_ helpful, and if it isnt obvious do NOT ever do that with anything metal. I know I'm new here but serious replies only please FFS. I know plenty of people that have done this and the rice trick (with alcohol or distilled water flush as recommend previously in the thread if necessary) will work if anything does. Time and patience!

I was joking btw. I never said to turn the microwave on, I just said to place it in the microwave..
You could just take out the battery and make sure it is completely dry. Then you could get a hair dryer and if it has a cool button, you could try that. or a can of air or an air compressor..
It just takes time.. let it sit there for a week and then try it.. If it doesn't work, then maybe you should get one of those lifeproof cases.. would've saved you on this one..

I had serious problems with my lg g5 because of water getting into the phone because of the seam at the back of the phone, on even a slightly damp surface, at first I put a small length of electrical tape over the seam, now I put very small rubber feet on the back the phone to raise it a few mm, works great, this isn't a problem if your careful obviously, but im very forgetful

My phone took a full submerge in toilet few weeks ago. Immediately took out battery wiped it dry. Took out Sd, sim, battery, screen protector. Wrapped 8-10 thick socks with phone. Put it in with a load of clothes in dryer. Make sure clothes are dry.
I mention all this because I've saved 10+ people's phones with this process. Got it from youtube video and was surprised it worked. Doesn't work well with phones with no detachable batteries.

Yeah that's definitely true. I can't stress that enough to people….Take out battery immediately after getting wet! The rice trick never seem to work for me.
I forgot to mention in the dryer thing. Usually 30-45 mins on medium heat. Make sure the phone is pretty cushioned with socks. Phone might get warm/hot in dryer. Wait 20-40 mins before trying to put everything together and power on.
Also one more important thing I need to mention to everybody. When your phone gets pretty wet. The sticker on your battery will change colors. Aka Phone company won't fix future issues. Happened to my cousin. My girlfriend had same phone and same issue. So what I did is order battery on amazon and Switched out. When her phone had an issue later on, they fixed it.

Yeah I never had issues. I figured at the time I had nothing to lose. Factory warranty won't cover water damage. It cost an arm and leg to have them fix it. So if you don't got anything to lose give it a shot peeps?
Heat and static pretty much. Now static I was a lil worried about. But it never gave me issues. Maybe because it's insides not really xposed and so many socks block it out idk? I never used fabric sheet with this fix, but I don't see it hurting anything.
Like I said before didn't have much luck with phones with no un-removable battery. But only tried that on two phones. Maybe future next phone you have luck?
Most the people I know who got it wet was with water. If you spill with any sticky stuff: Soda, beer, etc. This should still work. But maybe you would have to worry bout future repair hassle? Because that sticky stuff not going away. They would see that in phone probably and no fix from them.
Okay last one sorry just trying to help people lol. Some people said they used 99% isopropyl alchol submerged. Dried out for few days in rice submerged and dryer. They did all that because of sticky spills and what I mention above. The alcohol washes it away.

Personally I would use a hair dyer then leave it to air dry for a few days, don't have a tumble dryer

Heat and static pretty much. Now static I was a lil worried about. But it never gave me issues. Maybe because it's insides not really xposed and so many socks block it out idk? I never used fabric sheet with this fix, but I don't see it hurting anything.
Like I said before didn't have much luck with phones with no un-removable battery. But only tried that on two phones. Maybe future next phone you have luck?
Most the people I know who got it wet was with water. If you spill with any sticky stuff: Soda, beer, etc. This should still work. But maybe you would have to worry bout future repair hassle? Because that sticky stuff not going away. They would see that in phone probably and no fix from them.
