nexus one splashed in water

now the status indicator flashes quick amber then green over and over when attempted to power on..
any thoughts? i've only had it a few days..> AUGH

You should do that rice stuff everyone has been discussing lately. You know, put the phone in rice and let it dry or something. I don't know the specific instructions, but I think you should do it, don't know if it would help or not at this point though.

Revival after 30 minutes is a really impressive feat. Our own Lisa Hoover saved her son's phone from a water-logged fate after it took a dunk in a swimming pool by using a container of rice, but it definitely wasn't at the bottom of the pool for a half hour. ok, she's sitting in a bag of rice, and my g1 is back out in action...
ugh, hope i'm not buying another n1 soon...

well, i checked the water indicators on both the battery and the battery compartment on the phone, both are still WHITE!
i'm hoping it's just maybe a little moisture on the power button causing issues..
it's sitting in a bag of rice, i'll let it sit there until tomorrow then blow the dust off with canned air.

You should leave it in rice as much as you can, as there could still be water in there that will screw you over later, but I'll bet you're safe.

Once I spilt beer on my samsung i760, but my idiot friend thought that your supposed to put it in a bag of SALT, not rice, so he convinced me to do it and not only did it still not turn on the next day but the salt grinded when you opened the keyboard.
Fortunately the moister indicator did not trigger and I was able to return under warranty.

salt is hygroscopic. it raises humidity, and salt corrodes metal as well.

Hi all, I know this is a rather old thread, but I was wondering where I can find the moisture indicators on the phone and battery? Are they the white tabs near the connections of both the phone and battery? And what color are they supposed to be if they are triggered?

Nexus One survives it's SECOND SWIM

I dropped the slippery little sucker into the bathtub last night... took it out, popped the battery out, dropped everything into a gallon ziplock baggie full of rice.
fired it up this morning, it initially went into the bootloader for some reason, i rebooted and it came up fine! everything works!
bag of rice, it just WORKS!

haha... in my defense, i had just returned from an out of town business trip, and on my way thru the airport to the car, i turned my ankle, so i was filling the jacuzzi tub to soak my ankle, had the phone in my hand as i leaned over to turn off the water.. wasn't exactly thinking clearly.

These phones are notorious for not surviving "swims", but lately I've been hearing otherwise. For instance:
A buddy of mine has a MT3G and while leaning into the backseat to do something for his son, his phone slipped off of his lap and into his girlfriend's large sweet tea from McD's. He didn't even notice, for several minutes, until he took a sip from said tea.
His phone was floating in tea for minutes, and the only thing wrong with it is the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. That's it.

Why not add some food? Bring a toaster into the tub with you and you could also have some hot waffles with your wine.

It will absorb water at any temperature, just a lot slower than if it were hot.

for the same reason your grandmother put rice in the salt shaker and the sugar bowl. it absorbs the excess moisture.
silica desiccant would work better, but who has a big bag of that lying around?

My Nexus survived after water damage !

I fell from jetski in freshwater pond, never happened before thats why i decided to take phone with me this 1 time....
Oh well, it works like new.....at least now it does. Air dried it with hair dryer and put it in air tight rice container overnight. Read that it good to put phone in alcohol right after damage, but i skipped this part.

I like to take my phone swimming.

That's nothing, my N1 is a useful cave diving tool.

Count your blessings one by one... it's an electronic device, no matter how awesome it is (and it is awesome) it still suffers pain like all other devices.

I regularly lend mine to my best friend who is an Angler Fish..
Wish he would bloody well charge it up before handing it back though.

I did that to my old Centro back in the day. I almost died, but, sure enough, a few days later, bring! And I was ecstatic that I could stop using IMs to message people. Not to eager to try it out with my nexus though...`

My phone, seriously, survived being dunked in the pool. But it dropped like an anchor to the bottom. At least the OP had it in his pocket. Did you at least get back on it before you took the battery out? I would have probably drowned in a panic not remembering to swim and trying to take the battery out while I was in the water. Of course you're supposed to let it COMPLETELY DRY. When is it dry? Are you taking it apart completely, every layer, board? I doubt it. Therefore you let it dry until you're sure it's dry, then let it dry longer.

Fun at work: I performed a cold environmental test on my Nexus One in our environmental test chamber.
Got down to ~15° F and shut itself down.
Continued to cool to 0°F then removed it for 1 hour to warm up in 98° F.
Phone booted up and shows no signs of any problems or the horrible experience I put it through.

i didn't articulate well what I meant. Which was is leaving it to air dry considered a sufficiently satisfactory manner of dealing with a phone that has been in water. i know method will always result in a phone working. but what i would like some comfort over is that by going the air drying route i am not doing something that is a bad decision.
edit: it is now currently in a tub of rice for the next 2 days. fingers crossed.

That's pretty lame, Hulk.

My new thing is to use our industrial heat treating vacuum furnaces to pump down to 12 microns of pressure... water boils off WAY before that. Its like taking it to outer space. Couple devices became iPoods after toilet drops... tear the back off and pull battery, pump em down, fill with nitrogen, and done. Takes like 20 minutes
So, if you can't live without your phone for more than drying time, take it to your local heat treater! haha
Dont know the specifics of amoled displays, but I figure if LCDs dont explode under low pressure... amoled is probably ok

Hahha That is the fun part of living in Canada, On winter I used to test lots of gadgets I had in the extreme cold.
The most extreme I did, and I almost died in the processes was -40C. iPod touch didn't last long, and my Laptop was enjoying the cold by even going faster! though the screen failed after a few minutes, now it has a smudge I can only see on dark screens.

Vibrant went into the washing machine........

Update 3/2/11. I cleaned the phone with the cleaner posted in this thread. Got all the soap residue off no problem and dried very quickly. Got the spare battery out and tried the phone...nothing. It doesn't even try to turn on. I did get my data off the external SD. I really wish I could get the data off the internal SD as it has most of what I want like a bunch of photos and stuff. Oh well. Thanks for the tips in this thread.

Whole story.
I got in the shower my pants (with the phone in the pocket) got picked up by my girlfriend who thought she would help out and wash them with some other laundry. The phone went through all but the spin cycle before I got it out.
The phone was on when it went in and off when it came out. I pulled the battery and dissembled the phone. It is now in pieces drying out.
It looks like the underside of the main board (the metal casing holding the parts) has some discoloration, its sorta blackened and maybe has soap residue on it as well.
Anyway....this sucks.
Edit: Got the phone parts in rice. Hoping to at least get it working long enough to get my data/photos off of it.

Back in my Blackberry days there were always stories of people dropping there phones in water and it surviving.
They would take the phone apart and put it in a container of rice for a few days to absorb all the water. Problem is it was always said that pulling the battery immediately after it got wet was key. Since your phone was under for an extended period of time I dunno if this would work for you but its worth a try.

That's what I'm wondering too. Usually it's dropped in water for a few seconds, hardly time for the water to seep in and the battery can be pulled before the phone even shuts down. Mine was totally soaked.

Yeah... The outlook is kind of bleak but since its such an expensive device and a bag of rice is really cheap give it a shot.. Never know!

yeah, i've had that same thing happen with a phone and my zune (get in shower with phone/zune still in pants pocket...). when my phone went through the wash it was non functional, when my zune went through the wash it dried and has worked just as well for years.

how common is it to take a shower with pants on? Am I the only weirdo that takes showers without pants? Whats going on lol

I think the best way is to put it on the drier.

A great example of how important a comma can be
Put it in a jar of rice... this is a must do.

Its days are numbered.
If your phone was submerged in soapy water for a rinse cycle, then this is what will probably happen:
• If you take it apart some and dry it out (heat, bag of rice, etc) completely for a day or two and then put it back together, it will probably work fine at first.
• Over the next few weeks, it will start to break down as circuit traces and contacts corrode
I would highly recommend purchasing a Motorola Defy (waterproof), which should be able to withstand a wash cycle.
Also, find a girlfriend who isn't so absent minded. Anyone who has EVER worn pants and done laundry should think to go through the pockets before they toss them in a washing machine. Hell, I check mine twice..... once before i toss them in the hamper and then again right before I toss them in the machine.

To be fair I don't ever check pockets I just don't leave stuff in them. And those jeans were going back on when I was getting out of the shower.

Dropped mine in the toilet. Just let it dry, everything should be fine. At first you'll probably panic and ****'ll look like its ****ed up. But after it's dry everything should be functional. Now for the beating it might've taken... I'm not sure, but my daughter(infant) and I have this vibrant dropping/slamming/throwing fetish and the phone has survived that, so you should be fine .

This is true. I was very happy with mine but thought that since this happened I would maybe at least look at other options, possibly a vibrant 4G.

Sorry man, I'd be so pissed if my Vibrant ended up in the washer. However, I can't stop laughing about this comment.

If you have access to chemicals, you can also toss it in concentrated alcohol. That will for sure remove the water and make it dry faster. It would probably help dissolve any soap residue as well. Probably won't be good for the adhesives used on the phone, but those are just used to tack down some things like the button lights and such. The rest are really held down w/ screws.

Same thing happened to me just two weeks ago. Went through a full wash rinse cycle. But it never recovered. Power came back, but the screen was stuck in download mode and had heavy banding throughout the screen. My PC couldn't recognize the phone despite it being in download mode.
My mistake was trying to turn it on while it was still wet. I was completely ignorant about how to handle wet phones, and tried desperately to turn it on. Rice after one week did nothing to it... I think the damage was already done.
Hopefully with lots and lots of patience, you'll be able to get your phone back.

Well, I'll be buying sunshine a 2nd time now!

So, about 2 weeks back I bought sunshine and I was loving the unlocked bootloader and a custom rom. I lost my job a couple days after so I went to my fiance's fathers house to help him with on some demolition and rebuilding of the house. He has a hot tub. Turns out, a few drinks later we decide after working for hours, let's hit the hot tub and grab a few more beers. So I put my turbo in the swim trunks pocket and totally forget it's there. We slam a shot then head outside while it's snowing because being in the hot tub when it's snowing is pretty cool. Then I just jump right in and the phone is still in my pocket. Not realizing it, we spend 45 minutes in the tub and when I get out I find the phone in my pocket. Phone is completely shot. I put it in oats for 3 days and tried to charge and power it on, needless to say, it still didn't come back on. Now we can all laugh all my idiotic story! :crying::crying::crying::crying::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I don't mind rebuying it though, it's a useful and cool thing. I love to have full control of my phone.

Just for ***** and giggles you should try putting it in silica (you can buy bags of it in craft shops for drying flowers) because it actually attracts draws water to it. It may actually pull enough out to boot up the phone. (I would never trust it to work but would be neat to see if it could turn on)

Yeah I actually ended up taking the phone apart and checking out the internals and I ran it under a fan for another full day but it appears the strong chlorine from the tub actually corroded a bunch of resistors and all kinds of stuff. Rust everywhere. I'm decent at working on electronics and getting stuff to work but I'm pretty sure this thing is shot. Lol. Oh well, I did try.

Seeing as you're past the point of no return, you can try washing it with soapy water (I use dish soap), but be very gentle, as corroded components tend to come off easily. After it's dried, give it a short soak OUTDOORS in naptha (vm&p from hardware store), though you might not want to do certain components, such as the battery, screen, speakers, or delicate plastics, and rinse it with more naptha. Let it air dry for a few days, and try it out. Like said earlier, this would really just be for ****s and giggles, but I have had some success with this method.

Eh, it's too late now, i've sent it back for the insurance replacement. At least i know in confidence that they'll never find out its been unlocked because it'll never turn on again haha

My wife had a Galaxy S4 that spent at least 45 minutes in the bath tub. Pulled it out, let it dry in rice, then put a vacuum to all the ports/openings and I was able to revive it. That wasn't chlorine though, and who knows how long it actually lasted after that.

I dropped my Turbo in a lake once and was able to get it out after a while. I managed to fix it by taking it apart and gently scrubbing the corroded parts with ethyl alcohol. Granted, this was lake water without the chlorine but there were a lot of minerals.

Yeah I tried everything as well and my last resort was the insurance. I did have an s4 as well and another crazy story here, well maybe not that crazy but I was with my fiance at target buying some dog food and I left my s4 sticking halfway out of my pocket and I bent down to pick the 50lb bag up with my legs and snapped the phone in half nearly. Then I got the insurance replacement for that phone but I always test everything out before I send the old phone back. Turns out the s4 they sent me had an awful speaker and microphone so I took both phones apart and swapped the microphone and speaker and it worked perfectly for another 2 years.

Yeah it sucks. I got let go because they found out I was looking for another job. I started looking because I found that they threatened to fire 2 coworkers and myself only because they wanted us to do more(put a fire under our asses as our boss said) without getting the raises we deserved after getting certifications so I obviously was pissed and so the next day I went looking for jobs and called off whenever I had an interview because f them. I'll find something, it's just a matter of time.

Yeah I did try the alcohol scrub with a toothbrush after I let everything dry out, I even went over everything twice but in the turbo a lot of stuff is actually covered by little metal boxes so you can't directly access things. I ended up giving it a good alcohol bath a few times as well, never came back lol. I did let it charge for 8 hours, it just sat there and vibrated 1000 times before it stopped. There was one point when I could see the sd card for a tenth of second hooked up to the computer but ultimately no go.

Sorry you went in the hot tub with your dad. At least it wasn't the bath tub. I couldn't get drunk enough to jump in the hot tub with my dad and we drink together a lot. We got straight for the shower baby!!! Baby oil and the whole 9!!!

No that's perfectly normal. ^_^

Just had to do the same thing, except my Turbo face planted onto the floor of a parking garage. Glass shattered and LCD busted. But... digitizer still works and I was actually able to do a blind TWRP backup and get the files off. Yassssss. Doing the transfer and everything now
I've also done the been-in-a-hot-tub-for-45-minutes-before-I-realized-my-phone-was-in-my-pocket thing though lol. Too funny

Just had to do the same thing, except my Turbo face planted onto the floor of a parking garage. Glass shattered and LCD busted. But... digitizer still works and I was actually able to do a blind TWRP backup and get the files off. Yassssss. Doing the transfer and everything now
I've also done the been-in-a-hot-tub-for-45-minutes-before-I-realized-my-phone-was-in-my-pocket thing though lol. Too funny

Damn. Yeah, that happens. I always have a case on with screen protection but sometimes it still gets broken. Especially when I had my job using power tools and climbing in ceilings and attics and stuff all day I broke a few phones. Haha yeah, when you're in the moment you just don't think. Oh well lol

A lot of the water damage recovery has to do with the power state during contact. If you get it completely soaked while it's powered on, you'll make direct shorts that damage components beyond repair. If you're fortunate enough to catch it quickly and power it down, or it doesn't get fully submerged to the point of soaking internals, then there's a high success rate in recovering the data if not the device.
Sorry for all of your losses listed herein... the thought of destroying or losing my phone makes my stomach turn!
