On my last day on holiday I forgot to take my phone out of my pocket before going to the swimming pool. Now it's soaked and looks bricked. Does anyone knows if there it's a chance of it working after it's dried up.
If the phone was off and the battery was removed as soon as possible. Another major factor is how pure the water is - sea water will kill your phone unless you wash it out with water with no (or as almost none) salts in it.
The phone was to be allowed suffient time to dry out. Placing it under a gentle heat (ie near a lamp) and with those silicon bags that it equipment comes with or with rice. You are normally talking about a week for drying out time.
I've heard of dripping wet phones drying out and being okay, so it's a possibility.
There's all the usual airing cupboard/bowl of rice/little crystal packs you get in your trainers/bag of salt suggestions, but I think the most prominent one is to be 100% sure that ALL moisture has gone before you try turning it on again.
Have a search through the forums, and not just this phone as this is obviously not a phone specific problem. There's plenty of advice out there.
Good luck mate - I hope you get it working again.

open the back panel take evry thing out
dray it
dray the phone from back with an hair dryer with medium heat
for one hour
put it outside in the open for 4 hours
again one hour with hair dryer
and pray a lot
this is what save my nokia n95 ....so be optimistic
In my case I was saving a child from drowning ...so maybe it was an angel that thought it is not a good day to kill my phone
(try doing a good thing before the process)
good LUCK
20min is a long time for the phone to be in the water
It will also depend on if the phone was on or off when it went for a dip.
if it was off, there is a small chance it could be ok, leave it for a week to air and then cross your fingers.
if it was on, id take a guess that your goose is cooked.
sorry to hear bud.
Thanks a lot for all support! Well the phone was on :-( but the water was fresh. Anyway we have already checked out so no access to a hair dryer. Rice is not available until we're back to England this evening. Will report back if the phone survives.
Dissamble your phone completly (tutorial on youtube), place the mobo in a oven @ 100 degrees C for 5 a 10 min
Try first to dry your board with a hairdryer
I once fixed a friends (cough) iphone that was full of dirty water. Stripped it down, put the main components in clean water to wash it out, then put in a 50 degree oven for an hour. Left if over night then reassembled. Worked a treat afterwards, so there is hope. The secret is to give it plenty of time to dry out.
Use distilled water to rinse. Or even better, isopropanol; no baking needed.

it should be perfectly dry after everything that has been done to it.
I would be tempted to take it apart and leave it for a week it 2 to dry out. There's a good chance it will work again as long as you don't turn it on while its still wet. If it was salt water or water with chlorine wash the phone with clean water well while in pieces. It shouldn't cause any damage doing this. Its best to remove all salt & chlorine as to prevent long term damage.

It takes a Minimum of 2 weeks to cure a water damaged phone. If it has salt in it, it wont work at all. IN such a case you should have rewashed it with clean water. You also need to keep it air tight with DRY rice inside a airtight box for 1 to 2 weeks. This will make sure all the fluids are extracted from the machine.
It can feel dry, but it does not mean it actually is. Also, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT charge the phone with the battery in it after a water accident for the first time again.
Well, both of my insurance policies explicitly exclude mobile phones .
So it is now like either the phone will survive or I will have to use my old Hero for the next 12 months.
So I washed it again to make sure no chlorine left and put it in a tightly closed box with a lot of yummy rice
Anyway, I do not hold my breath. I think I fried it when I thought it is dry and was trying to switch it on.

Accidentaly I left my HD2 in my back pocket of swimming suite. Went into the sea for few minutes and went out.
Now the phone is dead.
Any suggestions?
I'm sorry, but what type of help are you looking for? You mean you were hoping that there was a way to revive your device after it went swimming for 3 minutes??
there is very little on the planet that is quite as corrosive as salt water, apart from maybe in chemistry labs.

Buy new one.
Mike
Remove all the easily-removable parts of the phone (battery cover, battery, sd and sim card). Then leave your phone for in a dry warm place for a while (24-48hours should suffice) so it all dries up.
I can't say the phone will survive, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks.
On the internet I found this answer, although I am not sure that for a smartphone it is viable
(?????)
"To anyone who drops their phone in salt water. Get the battery out immediately. When you get home or sooner if you can put the phone in something that will allow fresh water to immerse it entirely. Keep water running in the container for about 3 days continually flushing the phone. Now take all of the water out and fill the container with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.
Let the phone dry out for at least 2-weeks before trying a fully charged battery in it and turn it on.
Should work and you have just saved yourself buying a new one."
"Let the HD2 in running water for 3 days, and than fill with isopropyl alcohol."
as suggested in internet, would you do it?
Don't put it in normal water! Try the isopropyl alcohol instead. Leave it there for one day or so. It won't do anymore damage and MAY save your device. Let it dry in a warm place for at least one more day. But as said before salt water is very aggressive. Wish you luck!
i would suggest to remove battery and sim-card and put the phone in a bag with rice. i heard that rice absorbs moisture.

To be honest, such a topic isn't going to get many responsible replies, as water ingress isn't something good for electronics, let alone salt water.
If it were my phone, I'd send it to the insurance company and ask for a new one, as it isn't going to last long, no matter what you do with it.
I can't believe I'm the first person to say I'm sorry for your loss, but I am.
From previous encounters, I do agree with the clean with remove everything, alcohol solution, leave for a few weeks, switch on, but realistically, it's a long shot.
I bought my HD2 off the XDA MarketPlace for £310 four months ago if that is any help as a quide price.
The problem isn't water, it is salt water. Pure water is an insulator. The problem is what is in the water. Salts in water corrode and also short circuit. So removing the battery as quick as possible (or if the phone is off) and how quickly the impurities are washed out are the most important factors in saving your phone.
I had a phone that fell out of my shirt pocket into the bath I was filling. It took a minute or so (felt like a lot longer) to find it through the bubble bath. Took the battery out and ran it under the cold tap for about twenty minutes. I let it dry out for just over a week. Tried it out and it showed some signs of life. Left it for a couple of days and retried it a couple of times and it came on. The phone lasted over year (I upgraded it to another WinMo phone).
once you have cleaned and dried it out ensure you clean the battery connects as if there is an corrosion on this you will not get a good contact. If it doesn't work still then try another battery as this is usually the first thing to go. I once put a sony Ericsson in a 60 deg washing cycle, I didn't realise until I heard it banging. I took it out and simply dried it out and i was ok once I had replace the battery. My friend dropped his in a mug of tea and he thought it was dead, he dried it out and replaced the battery, its now ok.

My friend, sorry if you took it the wrong way. I meant it more as a joke than a sarcastic answer. If my words were sarcastic to you, then I aplogize.
As mentioned in the posts before this, the main problem is salt water. Furthermore, 3 minutes. The salt water would have penetrated every space possible. Not to be pessimistic, but I really don't think anything can save it...
From the physics point of view clear (better destilled) water is the most importent thing. As longer as better, because only the clean water can wash out the salt residues.
You should try make the water float in the case.
After this you need a week of time or a blow dryer for shorter drying.
Physically Correctly You can try as follows (if it doesn´t work it´s bad luck. Your HD2 is bricked now anyway): EDIT: take out SIM-card, batt, mSD-card before procedure (and clean them under a magnifying glass)
1. ) Put Your HD2 in approx. 32°C double DESTILLED water (from pharmacy-store or car-accessories) for 2 days. Water should be handwarm to have a better solubibility for salts
reason: it contains NO salty parts and chalk (in some areas You have "hard" water from the tap which might worsen the problem)
2.) After 2 days change water and keep it in fresh destilled water handwarm another day
3.) Let it dry in sunshine or in a place with constant 3o°C for one day
4.) Put it then in 99% alcohol for one day (alcohol is hygroscopic and "sucks"
the water out of every corner
5.) Let it dry again in a warm place (30°C) for one week
6. Insert fully charged batt and try Your luck. If it doesn´t work then it´s definitely bricked and You have to buy a new one.
<---- Idiot jus dropped his epic in sum water & of course it's not working!! I dried it out w/ a towel & blow dryer after it happened. When I connect the battery the keyboard keys still lights up, but when I press the power button all I hear is a ringing type noise (sounds like a fan spinning) and no bootup. I cannot boot into CWM or Download mode either. Has anyone experienced this or found a solution w/o having to replace the whole phone.
** Also, my battery has the red marking on the top of it stating it's been wet.
EDIT: If I plug in my usb the LED light comes on, but it's blue & my phone was @ 80% when I dropped it.
Thanks in advance!!
UPDATE: [ I couldn't wait the 48 hours!! (36 Hours) -- LoL ] I just removed my phone/battery from the rice bags & everything is working!! Yes, even the battery is good @ 72%!! I can't believe it worked!! Thanks Matrix!! And thanks to everyone for your great suggestions!! This phone is truely EPIC!!
Turn it off and remove the battery now!!! Do not put the battery back in.
You're going to mess it up by turning it on when things are shorting out!
Take the battery and the phone. Put them (separately) in a zip lock bag full of rice. Wait a day or two. Then try it out.
PS: Everyone should ingrain themselves in this reflex: If your phone hits water, remove the battery NOW. Do the rice trick, and try it later. Resist the urge to see if it still works.
Thanks for your quick replay & suggestion matrix!!
I am currently trying your method, but I'm hoping I didn't further short anything on the circuit board by trying to get it to work earlier.. It sounds like a good plan because the rice will absorb the water and probably be ready for consumption in a day or two!! LoL
Forget the bag of rice, you need to take the phone apart immediately, to the last screw and board and wipe down everything with alcohol and blow it out and dry it with a hair dryer. Otherwise even if you get it to work in a couple of days, corrosion will start to build up on the contacts of various things inside and you'll end up having to get another phone.
And this is why that extra $7.00 a month is worth it.

No, just means you gotta pay them whatever the current fee is for water damaged phones. Used to be 50 bucks, but I think the crooks doubled it. As for taking it apart, forget about that nonsense. Bag of rice for a couple days, take it out, if it boots up you are fine.

CRC Mass Air Sensor Cleaner
You can find it at auto parts stores, its an electrical component cleaner that displaces water, removes grime, grease, corrosion and dries with no residue.
You have to take it apart to use it and don't get it on plastic stuff. CRC makes several different electrical component cleaners and some of them will eat plastic so be careful with it.
Saved my Sprint Hero with this stuff after it landed in a puddle and spent about two minutes fully submerged in the water before I found where it landed. Luckily I was home, ran inside, took it apart and grabbed a can of CRC I had in the garage on a whim.
Granted, I never tried turning it back on while it was still wet, that is often the killer for wet electronics.
Just figure that its dead, whatever you do to it at this point isn't going to hurt it anymore but I would HIGHLY recommend taking it apart to make sure you get all the moisture out of it. I don't put much faith in the rice trick

It's def dead if u already tried to turn it on.
Just tell them you dropped it off the side of a boat.......then you wont have to show it to them
My buddy dropped his epic4g in the toilet bowl, he was paying insurance ($7.99 a month.) He did the samethings you did and did the rice trick and nope didn't work. Ended up calling sprint and spending 150 I think for a replacement phone.

Silica Gel packs are better than rice if you have any of those.
BUMP!! Please read my update to my OP!! Rice is the not only good for eating!! LoL
First I have to say, this is the first phone i have had for a year and it still looks like almost new
This morning when my alarm on my phone screamed at me to get out of bed, i accidentally tipped over a full glass of water that i had next to my bed, all the water got on my phone and my phone died (at first), i removed the battery as fast as i could and noticed that the "moist-markings" (?) on the phone and the battery had turned from white to red..
and it still works..
well ok, i used my mouth to blow very hard into the phone to get the water to disappear, but i never disassembled it or anything to dry it.. i have been using the phone all day and still can't find any malfunction :S Did i have an incredible amount of luck or is the G2/DZ waterproofed in any way?
The phone is in no way waterproof. But I've seen other folks on here that have had luck after getting their phones wet (even complete immersion), then had them come back to life after drying them out. Removing the battery quickly is definitely key.
I think you just got lucky, and water did not yet get to any places that could cause a short circuit and permanently damage the phone. I'd let the thing dry out as much as you can for a day or 2 (rice in bag trick seems to work wonders). At least dry it while you are sleeping. You never know, there can be some water hiding somewhere in there, that can still mess things up by flowing into the wrong place.
You, my friend, just have incredible luck.
The G2 is not waterproofed. I accidentally dropped mine into a glass of water, and let's just say, it did not fare so well... The screen colors went wonky, it stopped responding to touch, and half the keyboard keys stopped working.
Needless to say, I didn't get a warranty replacement on that one! (Thank goodness for insurance.)
Take the battery out of the phone and put it in a sealed bag of uncooked rice. This will draw moisture out of the device.
You're extremely lucky that it works currently, but you may get future problems from corrosion with any water that got into the device. You should give it a couple days in rice to pull out what moisture you can.

Okay, ex cell tech here... (oh God not him again! ) you were lucky because it was water. Soda or juice kills and rusts much quicker plus sugary residue left behind. I recommend taking it apart and scrubing all components you can with an old toothbrush and alcohol. Hand sanitizer will do just use it more sporatically. The problem is, what someone meantioned before, is the corrsive action that takes place after drying. It may happen a month later but it will unless you take it appart and dry it out. The bag of rice is okay but if you want to be 100% safe, take it appart. The warranty is void anyways, no worries. There are a few good guides on disassembly.
Good luck! Excuse my spelling... in a hurry.
I've done this for well over 200 phones and had about 70% success rate. Rice is good if you're not technical but if you want to be positive... take it apart and scrub away. The alcohol will dry up components and remove any corrusive buildup forming. Let us know how it goes...

You may get it done using a hair dryer, using caution though, but it will still have internal water present, best would be to get a ziplock bag, 1/2 full of white rice....place the phone in there for 24-48hrs, it will absorb pretty much all the moisture. time will be the issue...
do not rush it.
Well...just leave it in for a few DAYS and hope for the best...not one day but a FEW...just cause it appears to be dry doesn't mean everything inside is dry yet

The best option is to go ahead and diassemble it and clean everything with high grade Isopropal alcohol. Even if it's not 100% alcohol it's better than the water thats in there. Also, tap water has chemicals and minerals in it that will stay behind when the water is gone that will short out all kinds of things on the boards. These need to be rinsed off so that when you do energize it, no harm will be done. No way would I allow it to dry without flushing everything first.
Do the rice trick first. Make sure you wait 48hrs at least before power-on. If that doesnt work you will have to try taking it apart.
I left my s2 hanging on a heater vent for the whole night a year ago when that happened to me. I dropped it in a sugary drink so it was worse , had to wash the charging port with distilled water before hanging it on the vent. Another time I had my phone in my pocket while walked into the ocean on the beach, that phone was a goner for obvious reasons.

I have done this with two different phones (a Nokia N95 I dropped in a cup of coffee and an Inspire 4G on a pool) and got life from the phones for a couple of years after it happened, basically they keep working until I replaced them.
Remove the battery immediately, go and buy distilled water and submerge the phone to flush the impurities that got into the phone; for the N95 I dropped in coffee I repeated the process about 5 times until the water was clear, the one in the pool just a couple of times.
Rinse it, do not use a hairdryer as the heat can losen some stuff inside, put it on rice for as long as you can (I waited a full week).
Done!, YMMV but this was my solution to flush impurities without disassembling the phone.
I hope it helps, good luck.
i have used 98% alcohol to flush out any water because it doesn't attract any electricity. then i put it in a bag of rice for 1 day and it worked. (so to speak you and still use the phone when submerged under the alcohol. i made a video of it with an older flip phone)
Just get a new one it was in 5he toilet for heaven sakes

Like everybody else is saying take the battery out, and put the phone, and the battery in a bag full of rice. Wait 3-4 days and it should work. A hair dryer alongside that may not be a bad idea, and if u ever get it working, u might want to look into getting a case.

I agree. Not sure I would want it up against my face again even if its completely cleaned.
You know what's annoying?
It's when your non-technical friend on Facebook asks the public for assistance when they get their phone wet.
And you tell them to leave it in a bag of rice for 48 hours.
So they leave it in for 12 hours and then say everything is fine because it turns on now.
Ummh, hello. The 48 hours is not simply to get your phone to a point where it turns on. It's also to get as much of the remaining moisture out as possible, because EVENTUALLY the rest of the water is going to start corroding the phone internals and cause flakey problems down the road.
Sorry OP, I just found your thread a perfect opportunity to give a mini-rant.
ps. If it were my phone, I'd first do an isophrophy bath.
Place it in the microwave.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not but that is _not_ helpful, and if it isnt obvious do NOT ever do that with anything metal. I know I'm new here but serious replies only please FFS. I know plenty of people that have done this and the rice trick (with alcohol or distilled water flush as recommend previously in the thread if necessary) will work if anything does. Time and patience!

You know plenty of people who have dropped their phones in the toilet? Crazy..
I was joking btw. I never said to turn the microwave on, I just said to place it in the microwave..
You could just take out the battery and make sure it is completely dry. Then you could get a hair dryer and if it has a cool button, you could try that. or a can of air or an air compressor..
It just takes time.. let it sit there for a week and then try it.. If it doesn't work, then maybe you should get one of those lifeproof cases.. would've saved you on this one..
Heh alright fair enough. I read it and said out loud WTF? but yes, my friends are terrible with their phones I dont know why. Good luck with your phone OP, let us know how it works out for you.

Okay so I was shaving with my phone on the sink, as I leaned in my phone fell in the running water . I took it out the water as fast as I could and took the battery out Just to make sure no water got in the phone . I put the battery back in and the screen is now flickering how long should I let it dry and how should I dry it any help would be gladly appreciated. ...........yeah I know I'm a big dummie lol plz don't flame me !
Put it in rice for 24 hr if not longer, your second mistake was to power it on after it getting wet.
I'd immediately put it in a bag of rice and let it sit for at least 24 hours personally.

Rice rice baby, you know? Or silica packs. With the quickness.

Dunk it in 99% alcohol for a bit then take it out & dry it off... Should be good to go.

Silica is best, but cat litter, instant couscous, instant rice, and instant oatmeal all performed better than uncooked white rice—everyone's favorite damn drying agent.
Best you can do is place it in a bag of uncooked rice to try and draw the moisture out. Beings you already tried to powered it on then the damage might already been done. Leave in the bag for a few days but mostly its a lost cause as the connections will most likely rust over time as I seen happened with people in the past.

You know what? I suggest popping open those 20 screws and air drying it. After 24h use something like Arctic clean 2 or alcohol to clean any contacts you can, including USB c port. You'll get to see more of your phone, display will probaly dry out better and you'll get an idea of components that may need replacing in future if it acts up.if you have it already or know somewhere close by, but some silica and put the disassembled parts in different Ziploc bags.
