At about 11:00 pm, I had my Nexus one in my back pocket, as my new skinny jeans have no front pocket (yes I'm a girl). We were at a New Year's party, I went to the restroom, dropped my pants and heard a large PLOP. Horrified I turned around in slow motion knowing what I would see. Nice bubbles rising from my beautiful nexus one.
Now it's in a bag of rice, and hoping for the best. Thankfully I do have a squaretrade warranty on it!!

I hope you removed the battery immediately. Put it in a SEALED CONTAINER full of rice in a warm place or under some sunlight and leave it there AT LEAST 2-3 cycles of it accumulating moisture on the lid of the container. Each day or so, change out the rice, wipe down any moisture, fill it with fresh rice and start it over. Once no moisture is on the lid, do it one more time for a day or so. Do not put the battery in or try to power it on until that point.
And keep in mind your battery might be toast regardless. You might get lucky on the phone, however.
BTW, might not want to re-use the rice after, considering where the moisture is coming from

Thanks for the info.
I think I grabbed it really quickly from the toilet, but it felt like slow motion as it seemed like I stalled for 10 seconds, watching in horror the bubbles rising. I can still see it now! haha
I did immediately remove the battery. It's now in a ziplock of rice. It's been in there since 3 am this morning. There's moisture in the corners of the screen. Will wait it out. I am currently using a cheap freebie lg flip phone and it hurts, lol.
My fear is the fact that it was blue water... they had one of those deodorant things in the tank. That can't be good.
batteries are very cheap on ebay, $6.50 shipped

Yes, it's absorbent. We used to put rice in our salt shaker down in humid Louisiana to keep it from clumping.
And yes, the comment about not re-using the rice was very funny. If this thing works, then I have to think about the toilet water tainted phone against my ear.

Yeah, just don't be in a hurry to use it, even if your current phone sucks compared... If you use it too fast you will kill it, right now there might be a chance.. Who knows about the blue sanitizer, but as long as it's not corrosive or conductive and leave nasty bits behind it might not be a problem.
I'd suggest a sealed tight tupperware dish with fresh rice and put it it somewhere warm or with sunlight, and again, keep changing it until it's at least past one cycle WITHOUT any condensation on the tupperware. It could be a week, but personally I'd rather be without the N1 for a week than forever.

unless you have a giant bag of desiccant in your house somewhere.
i submerged my N1 in teh sink while washing dishes. I had shoulder surgery and was on the phone doing dishes ( was my first mistake). I had my N1 in the sling with headphones on and when i leaned forward, it slid right under the running water. I grabbed it and dried it off best i could, took the battery,sim,sd,batter cover off. I then put it in a tupperware container buried in rice for 24 hours sealed and it works like it never happened
I dropped my N1 into the drain once. Fully submerged in water and I only manage to get it out a minute later.
Lucky it was in the pouch which made the water go in slower.
Put it in a dry cabinet (the ones for camera gear) for a day and happy to report I'm still using it now.

So, I couldn't resist trying, everything looked very dry. Patience has never been a virtue of mine. Soon as I woke up I stuck the battery in and fired this puppy up. I was worried, it stayed on the boot logo for what seemed like longer than usual, but she's up and running! Speaker seems to work fine, I haven't made a call yet but will in just a bit.
After dropping it in la toilette, I took off the screen protecter as well. This morning I notice when the screen is off, the reflection looks a little funny, kind of a different hue, slightly hazy reflection given off, but I'm not sure if that's just how it looks without a screen protector, or if it's a result of the blue water.
Phone is charging now, and that seems to be working fine too.

On my last day on holiday I forgot to take my phone out of my pocket before going to the swimming pool. Now it's soaked and looks bricked. Does anyone knows if there it's a chance of it working after it's dried up.
If the phone was off and the battery was removed as soon as possible. Another major factor is how pure the water is - sea water will kill your phone unless you wash it out with water with no (or as almost none) salts in it.
The phone was to be allowed suffient time to dry out. Placing it under a gentle heat (ie near a lamp) and with those silicon bags that it equipment comes with or with rice. You are normally talking about a week for drying out time.
I've heard of dripping wet phones drying out and being okay, so it's a possibility.
There's all the usual airing cupboard/bowl of rice/little crystal packs you get in your trainers/bag of salt suggestions, but I think the most prominent one is to be 100% sure that ALL moisture has gone before you try turning it on again.
Have a search through the forums, and not just this phone as this is obviously not a phone specific problem. There's plenty of advice out there.

dray it
dray the phone from back with an hair dryer with medium heat
for one hour
put it outside in the open for 4 hours
again one hour with hair dryer
and pray a lot
this is what save my nokia n95 ....so be optimistic
In my case I was saving a child from drowning ...so maybe it was an angel that thought it is not a good day to kill my phone
(try doing a good thing before the process)

20min is a long time for the phone to be in the water
It will also depend on if the phone was on or off when it went for a dip.
if it was off, there is a small chance it could be ok, leave it for a week to air and then cross your fingers.
if it was on, id take a guess that your goose is cooked.

Thanks a lot for all support! Well the phone was on :-( but the water was fresh. Anyway we have already checked out so no access to a hair dryer. Rice is not available until we're back to England this evening. Will report back if the phone survives.
Dissamble your phone completly (tutorial on youtube), place the mobo in a oven @ 100 degrees C for 5 a 10 min
Try first to dry your board with a hairdryer
I once fixed a friends (cough) iphone that was full of dirty water. Stripped it down, put the main components in clean water to wash it out, then put in a 50 degree oven for an hour. Left if over night then reassembled. Worked a treat afterwards, so there is hope. The secret is to give it plenty of time to dry out.
Use distilled water to rinse. Or even better, isopropanol; no baking needed.

it looks it's fried :-( I disassembled it and dried up but it does not show any signs of life. Will try to call my travel insurance company tomorrow to see if it's covered.

it should be perfectly dry after everything that has been done to it.
I would be tempted to take it apart and leave it for a week it 2 to dry out. There's a good chance it will work again as long as you don't turn it on while its still wet. If it was salt water or water with chlorine wash the phone with clean water well while in pieces. It shouldn't cause any damage doing this. Its best to remove all salt & chlorine as to prevent long term damage.
Sorry to be the dictionary police but its kinda a habit of mine, swimmed with makes no sense, I think you were aiming for swam.

It takes a Minimum of 2 weeks to cure a water damaged phone. If it has salt in it, it wont work at all. IN such a case you should have rewashed it with clean water. You also need to keep it air tight with DRY rice inside a airtight box for 1 to 2 weeks. This will make sure all the fluids are extracted from the machine.
It can feel dry, but it does not mean it actually is. Also, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT charge the phone with the battery in it after a water accident for the first time again.
Well, both of my insurance policies explicitly exclude mobile phones .
So it is now like either the phone will survive or I will have to use my old Hero for the next 12 months.
So I washed it again to make sure no chlorine left and put it in a tightly closed box with a lot of yummy rice

This morning when my alarm on my phone screamed at me to get out of bed, i accidentally tipped over a full glass of water that i had next to my bed, all the water got on my phone and my phone died (at first), i removed the battery as fast as i could and noticed that the "moist-markings" (?) on the phone and the battery had turned from white to red..
and it still works..
well ok, i used my mouth to blow very hard into the phone to get the water to disappear, but i never disassembled it or anything to dry it.. i have been using the phone all day and still can't find any malfunction :S Did i have an incredible amount of luck or is the G2/DZ waterproofed in any way?
The phone is in no way waterproof. But I've seen other folks on here that have had luck after getting their phones wet (even complete immersion), then had them come back to life after drying them out. Removing the battery quickly is definitely key.
I think you just got lucky, and water did not yet get to any places that could cause a short circuit and permanently damage the phone. I'd let the thing dry out as much as you can for a day or 2 (rice in bag trick seems to work wonders). At least dry it while you are sleeping. You never know, there can be some water hiding somewhere in there, that can still mess things up by flowing into the wrong place.
You, my friend, just have incredible luck.
The G2 is not waterproofed. I accidentally dropped mine into a glass of water, and let's just say, it did not fare so well... The screen colors went wonky, it stopped responding to touch, and half the keyboard keys stopped working.
Needless to say, I didn't get a warranty replacement on that one! (Thank goodness for insurance.)
Take the battery out of the phone and put it in a sealed bag of uncooked rice. This will draw moisture out of the device.
You're extremely lucky that it works currently, but you may get future problems from corrosion with any water that got into the device. You should give it a couple days in rice to pull out what moisture you can.

Dessicant work better lol. www.ifixit.com has awesome bags fire just such emergencies. If you do go the rice route, put the phone in a panty hose our something similar or you well have rice dust in your phone forever! Lol
Okay, ex cell tech here... (oh God not him again! ) you were lucky because it was water. Soda or juice kills and rusts much quicker plus sugary residue left behind. I recommend taking it apart and scrubing all components you can with an old toothbrush and alcohol. Hand sanitizer will do just use it more sporatically. The problem is, what someone meantioned before, is the corrsive action that takes place after drying. It may happen a month later but it will unless you take it appart and dry it out. The bag of rice is okay but if you want to be 100% safe, take it appart. The warranty is void anyways, no worries. There are a few good guides on disassembly.

I'm an avionics tech myself, while alcohol works wonders and it is the sure fire way, I reccomend the bag of rice trick mostly because not everyone is like us and wants to completly disemble they're cell. And a bag of rice is a no brainer lol. So long as you put it in rice and leave it in for a few days promptly after the incident you should be ok.

Yeah, you're right. To me and you, its just removing a few T5 screws and unhooking a few ribbon wires. The rice is good enough. Just be sure to pull the battery, sim, and sd card. Powered on device could make it corrode faster...

Wow you're lucky! But indeed don't expect it to be safe if you never got it dry in the first place. In fact yuo should follow all the advise in this topic before ever powering it on again! Anyway do it .

my note fall in toilet in friday morning before i went to work, i blow air from an hairdryer but it still acting like crazy. then i put it in a bag with rice, it become better. the only problem is that the screen is blincking like +- screen brightness, now i have it in a bag with 2 silica gel bags that come in example shoe package , is this good ? do you think my phone will be like before:-(

Most importantly, turn it off and don't turn it on until you are sure it's completely dry
Silica gel is good. I've used alcohol to save an android phone in the past (HTC Magic) after it fell into a toilet (with the added bonus of sterilizing it!) but YMMV with the Note. I filled a quarter of a ziplock bag with 99% alcohol, dropped in my phone and shook it up. In theory, the fluid alcohol should replace the water molecules along the circuit board, but will evaporate at a much faster rate. After a few minutes, I removed the phone, gave it a good wiping and let it air dry for about 12 hours, then to be safe put it in a bag of rice (same effect as silica gel) for another day and a half. The phone still works.
But I'd recommend this as a last resort - try the silica gel/rice treatment first.
DO NOT PUT IT IN RICE!!! THATS A WIVES TALE! THE DUST FROM THE RICE WILL CAUSE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS... I own a mobile device repair shop... turn it off first and foremost. Most electronics turn themselves off when they get wet... they don't get fried until you turn them back on. Take it apart as far as you can and sit it under a source of dry air (aka A/C) and leave it for ATLEAST 2 days (preferably a week). You need to take the back plate off. You can find tutorials on how to do it online.

Good Lord! It's surprising how many people have dropped their phones in the toilet! Needless to say, I am never touching someone else's phone again.
This one time a colleague of mine dropped his iPhone pouch in his pants at the toilet at work. He thought he lost it. All this time it was stuck to his butt crack & he found it the next day! LOL. I have never touched his phone since.
Lesson learnt... Think twice before bringing somebody else's phone to your face.
You should close shop.
I've done the rice thing at least 20 times with friends and family. Worked everytime .
Most important thing Is to be patience. Take battery and leave it alone for a few days.

There are plenty of desiccants out there that work MUCH better than rice. I think most people preaching the rice route have only done it that way. They don't know if they'd just placed it anywhere with a supply of warm, dry air and waited, it would've worked just as well. If you want to use a REAL desiccant, you can get a product called DampRid at most hardware or grocery stores. It's a plastic tub with anhydrous calcium chloride in the bottom, underneath a perforated plastic plate. Just pop the phone in and snap the lid on.
Personally, I'd just disassemble as far as you feel comfortable and place in a warm dry area for awhile. A rinse with 99% isopropyl alcohol wouldn't hurt, either. But step one is always remove the battery first!

my note fall in toilet in friday morning before i went to work, i blow air from an hairdryer but it still acting like crazy. then i put it in a bag with rice, it become better. the only problem is that the screen is blincking like +- screen brightness, now i have it in a bag with 2 silica gel bags that come in example shoe package , is this good ? do you think my phone will be like before:-(

You are kidding right?Won't the heat destroy it?
Remove the battery
I think only one poster implied it... REMOVE THE BATTERY as well as drying it out.
Even if you turn it off there is still current being drawn from the battery - else the power button would never work.
Then follow the excellent advice here - esp the alcohol route - and hope.
I was making a video trying to do a prank on my friend, and it just slipped out of my hands. It was in there for around 5 seconds and was completely soaked. I put it in a bag with rice, but that's pretty much all i know how to do.
Is there any other things I should be doing to make the phone dryer?

I havent tried to turn it on yet, the sd card works via card reader though, i guess thats good.

You may get it done using a hair dryer, using caution though, but it will still have internal water present, best would be to get a ziplock bag, 1/2 full of white rice....place the phone in there for 24-48hrs, it will absorb pretty much all the moisture. time will be the issue...
do not rush it.
Well...just leave it in for a few DAYS and hope for the best...not one day but a FEW...just cause it appears to be dry doesn't mean everything inside is dry yet

The best option is to go ahead and diassemble it and clean everything with high grade Isopropal alcohol. Even if it's not 100% alcohol it's better than the water thats in there. Also, tap water has chemicals and minerals in it that will stay behind when the water is gone that will short out all kinds of things on the boards. These need to be rinsed off so that when you do energize it, no harm will be done. No way would I allow it to dry without flushing everything first.
Do the rice trick first. Make sure you wait 48hrs at least before power-on. If that doesnt work you will have to try taking it apart.
I left my s2 hanging on a heater vent for the whole night a year ago when that happened to me. I dropped it in a sugary drink so it was worse , had to wash the charging port with distilled water before hanging it on the vent. Another time I had my phone in my pocket while walked into the ocean on the beach, that phone was a goner for obvious reasons.

I have done this with two different phones (a Nokia N95 I dropped in a cup of coffee and an Inspire 4G on a pool) and got life from the phones for a couple of years after it happened, basically they keep working until I replaced them.
Remove the battery immediately, go and buy distilled water and submerge the phone to flush the impurities that got into the phone; for the N95 I dropped in coffee I repeated the process about 5 times until the water was clear, the one in the pool just a couple of times.
Rinse it, do not use a hairdryer as the heat can losen some stuff inside, put it on rice for as long as you can (I waited a full week).
Done!, YMMV but this was my solution to flush impurities without disassembling the phone.

i have used 98% alcohol to flush out any water because it doesn't attract any electricity. then i put it in a bag of rice for 1 day and it worked. (so to speak you and still use the phone when submerged under the alcohol. i made a video of it with an older flip phone)

Like everybody else is saying take the battery out, and put the phone, and the battery in a bag full of rice. Wait 3-4 days and it should work. A hair dryer alongside that may not be a bad idea, and if u ever get it working, u might want to look into getting a case.

I agree. Not sure I would want it up against my face again even if its completely cleaned.
You know what's annoying?
It's when your non-technical friend on Facebook asks the public for assistance when they get their phone wet.
And you tell them to leave it in a bag of rice for 48 hours.
So they leave it in for 12 hours and then say everything is fine because it turns on now.
Ummh, hello. The 48 hours is not simply to get your phone to a point where it turns on. It's also to get as much of the remaining moisture out as possible, because EVENTUALLY the rest of the water is going to start corroding the phone internals and cause flakey problems down the road.
Sorry OP, I just found your thread a perfect opportunity to give a mini-rant.
ps. If it were my phone, I'd first do an isophrophy bath.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not but that is _not_ helpful, and if it isnt obvious do NOT ever do that with anything metal. I know I'm new here but serious replies only please FFS. I know plenty of people that have done this and the rice trick (with alcohol or distilled water flush as recommend previously in the thread if necessary) will work if anything does. Time and patience!

You know plenty of people who have dropped their phones in the toilet? Crazy..
I was joking btw. I never said to turn the microwave on, I just said to place it in the microwave..
You could just take out the battery and make sure it is completely dry. Then you could get a hair dryer and if it has a cool button, you could try that. or a can of air or an air compressor..
It just takes time.. let it sit there for a week and then try it.. If it doesn't work, then maybe you should get one of those lifeproof cases.. would've saved you on this one..
