Hello everyone, community of users and developers who strive not to let our old smartphones die.
The S5 has been one of my favorite cell phones, and I still have one, but I have not been able to use it again due to overheating problems, I've tried Roms from 4.4 Kit kat, up to 9.0 Pie, going through Stock Roms, Lineage OS, portations of other devices and none have noticed improvement. In simple tasks, such as camera, WhatsApp and others, with low brightness, I get temperatures between 50 and 65 degrees, and when I play or download Play Store applications, I get temperatures above 80 degrees, plus the battery does not last long, or at least it does not seem normal to me the duration that it has, approximately 2 hours of use with high temperatures.
I am very worried because I do not want to lose my fantastic cell phone, I would appreciate any help I could use very well, what I found in the forums has not helped me, I hope your quick help!

The temperature & battery life issue is a typical indicator for the battery itself going bad.
You should replace the battery because, at any time, your device will just experience other symptoms as well.
Good Luck!

Well in my opinion overheating in this phone is good because it will prevent from screen flickering and black screen issues.

Hello, have a nice day, I have tried other batteries, I made an adaptation of the Samsung J7 2016 battery, which I understand is 3300 mAh, and it is working well in the original cell phone, but in the S5 it continues to give me overheating error, and discharges too fast, just like the old G900F OEM batteries, I still have not bought an original from the PolarCell family and so on, because I'm afraid of losing my money, thanks for the answer!
It could be good, but ...

I am worried that such high temperatures can burn the processor, emmc or other internal components of the cell phone, it is practically impossible for me to hold the cell phone in my hands while I use it, and I am afraid, that the battery explodes, or as I had said it, burn some internal component and lose my cell phone forever

In January there was an article saying a software optimization has increased battery life on the s4 by 50 %. http://www.phonearena.com/news/Luci...promises-up-to-50-longer-battery-life_id51164
With the s5 out , which is reaching great battery life while having 'only' 2800 Mah it seems that Samsung has implemented this software and having better battery life than many good tablets

When will it come for the s4? Probably just a matter of time, but do you guys Really think this is realistic? A 50% increase seems astronomic to me. In the text above it says the playing time of angry birds almost got doubled

Neighbor of the friend of my cousin's sisters uncle's stepfather's grandpa's stepdaughter is owner of the made by LG Nexus 1300. the android there is so efficient that she connects her fridge for night, as during the day the system charges battery very intensively.
Something for something, you can DECREASE speed of your phone, decrease the screen brightness etc. Or, you can digg eBay for nokia 5510, if you care about the battery life more than for phone efficacy.

If you had even made the effort to read the article , you wouldn't be writing that. People like you will never make progress in anything because everything that requires thinking out of the box seems impossible to achieve if you start like that. The PowerXtend algorithms change the way how software and hardware interact and optimizes it. The battery life is already tremendously improved on the s5 which is a fact, so you don't have to start with talking about your friends cousins sister and so on.. This by the way doesn't require some extreme CPU throttling , and I honestly don't know why anyone should have a 100% CPU-usage while surfing on the Internet for example. That's what optimization is.

I fully agree with you. For internet browsing, the power is not needed by CPU, but by the WiFi/3G/LTE. And, most of battery capacity goes there in such case.
But, 100% CPU is needed to keep alive in the background you email, tweeter, facebook, google and samsung sync plus any other app you may have.
For example, using the NavXtend. The outcome is that my position jumps around when I'm turning or suddenly stopping/accelerating. This is caused by the redirection of part of GPS requests to loop which predicts my movement.
But, you are absolutely right, I did not read the article. Instead, I went to the manufacturer portal, where he clearly states that any savings may be "up to" something.
And, exactly as with NavXtend, I will TRY any solution instead of sending excited posts that someone wrote something somewhere.
Hi guys,
So bought the Verizon Galaxy S5 for my fiance when it came out. Over the past week or two it's been dying rather quickly. Attached are some battery metrics I took from the screenshot. Do they look normal to you?
It looks like the android system is using up all the battery, but I'm not sure why this is.
Thanks in advance for any help!

It seems your Gps is on.
Keep GPS off.(Location).
This will help you to boost your battery.
this is perfectly normal. having 35% after 8 hours is actually average

You have unrealistic expectations. Using two thirds of the charge over 8 hours is not atypical. Why do you believe otherwise?
You can do various tweaks to gain a few hours e.g. GPS always off, short screen time outs, perhaps install some inverted apps (black themed screens use considerably less battery), et cetera. Or perhaps invest in an extended capacity battery. Or some people feel that it is easier to carry a spare battery.
.
.
What is everyone on in this thread?! 8 hours is nothing and unless you have been gaming non stop, which seems doubtful considering the display being almost non existent in the log, you should normally get at least 24-48 hours with about 3-5 hours of screen time. Something is wrong with either the software or the battery, but normally it is a software problem, BBS is your friend.

You sir, are a troll until proven otherwise. You are simply wrong, perhaps the reason why all of the other posts disagree with you. 24+ hours is not normal. The only way anyone would get that kind of duration is to have the phone off most of the time and most people do not use their phones that way. The OP had 8.6 hours at @ 32% remaining, a wholly normal result.
Certainly battery life varies widely depending on GPS & wifi use, gaming, screen time and so forth. But to claim that 24+ hours is normal is egregiously specious.

Wow wow, hold your horses, you are being serious? It is completely normal for me with my 900F model and a lot of people are getting it. 24/48 hours is my typical battery with phone on (the battery obviously doesn't count power off, so that is a moot point anyways). I happened to make a SS last month and will share it for you to see and I didn't even try to save the battery, I never do since the battery of the S5 is so exceptional!
I agree, it does not look normal. Something is probably holding wake locks or working the CPU. There's a lot of badly written apps out there, including some of the most popular. I've seen FB messenger and Slacker radio apps use 2-6% CPU in the background for no good reason, consistently until force closed.
In any case, try to install an app that can read wakelocks, like BetterBatteryStats or GSAM. Also check the tasks screen in Android Tuner to see if something is keeping the CPU busy in the background for no reason.
Once you figure out the abnormal drain, try installing my app, LeanDroid to extend your battery even more

Whats the solution to battery life and overheating during regular use (not on the charger)?
You realize your issues with heat build during charging are because of the fast-charge technology, right? Totally normal, as a ton of power is flowing into the phone. You can always use a slow charger to charge the phone while in use. You shouldn't have any heat build up during use when not also charging. I know I don't. The hottest the phone gets is slightly warm.

For overheating, use a different adapter if you have the 1.8 GHz version. Battery life, just get a third party battery saver and turn on airplane mode. That will save you a ton of battery. I did it for mine and the phone last from 6 A.M to 10 P.M.

Very dependent on ambient temperatures as well.
Anandtech has confirmed that the panel in the ZF2 is inefficient compared to competitors, so not much can be done about that aspect. Their analysis of the phone is in depth, as are their other reviews.
I would like to return mine because the battery is performing right under the Optimus G I owned. With 3000mAh I was looking forward to battery comparable to the G2. If the next OTA improves battery, then I'll keep the Asus.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"
Dang, so the bad battery is a hardware related (screen tech) issue based on that review.

Yeah. The people from Anandtech are pretty good at evaluating devices. Also this would explain why the battery drains rapidly during use & barely when inactive. Battery life is very important to me, so a phone with a removable battery might be best.

One thing to keep in mind, is that though the display uses a lot of power, the Intel chip itself seems very efficient. Not only does it sleep well, but as is shown in the PCMark testing on the Anand website, it uses its power very efficiently. Thus, though the phone's maximum display on time is much lower than the other phones, its practical usage time is fairly similar. I get around 5 hours screen on time with 1-2 days of sleep time.

For me getting even 4hrs is requiring me to disable apps, use greenify to kill background apps, and use min brightness. I tried factory resets, so doing those over and over isn't improving my battery. Honestly I just want a new phone with the battery life of my G2, since development is slowing down for it.

I'm entertaining the thought of getting a Nexus 6P this 2017. I understand updates will still be that quick and supported by 2018 but I have some questions:
1. Is it true the 6P has some water-resistant powers that it's considered safe to use during light rain or a spill of water or soda?
2. I heard that a "bug" causes the phone to crash or turn off unexpectedly when the battery dips below 10%?
3. Is it also true the wifi and bluetooth can sometimes be erratic?

I bought the Nexus6P back in December because it was a great open box deal, and I couldn't be happier.
I've never encountered any of the issues you mentioned at all, and I find it to still be super snappy under normal use, plus the battery is great.
I can't comment on the water-resistance because I try not to allow it to get wet at all; that said, I'm sure you can just youtube people stress testing their poor 6p phones.
I will agree with others here though in saying that it is a bit large - I did want to pixel (not the XL) as it's size is much better, but the price was too high.
So, in 2017 what old flagship would you choose in terms of battery life, overall speed & performance and an excellent camera...a Nexus 6P, OnePlus 3T or Galaxy S7?

Nexus 6P, hands down. Mine consistently lasts all day (about 18 hours) with moderate to heavy usage (browsing XDA with Tapatalk, social media, etc), takes amazing pictures, and is very fast/responsive.
I have no experience with the OnePlus 3T, but my mom's Galaxy S7 was awful. It had horrible battery life, ugly software, and performance was very janky. The cameras were pretty good, though.
You can't go wrong with a Nexus phone. The amazing developers here on XDA keep them alive long after Google drops support.
Problem is I'm not into rooting and I only depend on software updates via OTA.
I also heard about the device freezing, radios (such as bluetooth, wifi, etc.) kept playing up and phone dies after only 15% (or below) battery life.

Even if you're not into rooting, you'll still get OTA updates with the latest security patches/bug fixes months before any other phone. The 6P should be supported up until Android 9.0, so you'd be good for another 14 months or so.
If you do decide to take a walk on the wild side and root after Google drops support, Nexus phones are very easy to unlock, root, and customize.
As for the freezing, I've never experienced this while stock. The only time my device has ever frozen/crashed was due to something stupid I did, like changing the file system, or risky kernel settings.
I don't use Bluetooth, so I can't provide any feedback there, but I can vouch for WiFi being very stable.
The shutdown/battery issues are caused by degraded batteries. There's no avoiding it, batteries are rated for a certain number of charge cycles and wear out over time, but there are things you can do to extend the life of your battery:
1. Don't expose your phone to extreme hot/cold temperatures. Using it in the summer or winter is ok, but don't put it in the freezer to run benchmarks or to keep it cool while installing updates. If you must keep it cool, take it out of its case (if you have one) and place it in front of a fan. I always place my phone in front of a fan when installing a new ROM or anything CPU intensive to keep it cool.
2. Don't use fast charging unless absolutely necessary, such as you're heading out for a hot date in 20 minutes but you only have 15% left. If you're charging your phone overnight, there's no need to use the fast charger. I've been using the 1 amp wall adapter from my Galaxy Nexus to charge my 6P overnight and the battery is just as good as day one with no random shutdowns.
3. Don't play games, install updates, or anything that may cause the phone/battery to heat up while the phone is charging. Browsing the web, listening to music, texting, or other light tasks are fine, but playing Asphalt 8, installing the latest OTA, or whatever while charging will cause your battery to heat up and wear it out faster.
4. Charge the phone while off if possible. The reason for this is when powered on and the battery reaches 100% it stops charging (obviously). When the battery drops to 98% it starts charging again. If you charge overnight with the phone on the 2% drop/recharge will happen multiple times, causing unnecessary charge cycles and wearing out the battery.
5. Try to avoid letting the battery go below 15-20%. Discharging the battery too far too often wears it out faster.
6. If you want to get really anal about this, charge the battery when it reaches 20% and unplug it when it reaches 80%. This counts as only half of a charge cycle, thus extending the life of your battery. There's an app on XDA that stops charging at whatever limit you decide, but I believe it requires root.
I recommend buying your 6P new (if you decide to go with it and if you can find one). When you buy a used phone you have no idea how badly the battery was abused.

I just sold my OnePlus 3T, it was a great phone, the only thing that disappointed me was the camera. If camera was as good as the 6P I would of kept it for another year. It is very poor in low light and bad focus on the simplest shots. I think the OnePlus 5 will be the phone to look to next for a mid priced beast.

Those issues are some most users including myself never have had. Those kind of issues are not device specific either and the battery is actually pretty good for the phones age. The camera is amazing with 4k quality so I don't know what you're smoking and the audio quite actually is pretty decent and doesn't have crackling or tinny sounds. The call quality is actually amazing and very clear even compared to newer phones and my home phone. At times it can be quite but there are mods for that but for general users the audio is good enough. Keep in mind that many issues you may have heard are a small percentage and are usually reports from devices with an old degraded battery and maybe a buggy custom rom. Should I assume you don't have a nexus 6p? Before talking about a phone you don't have try researching about it.
I've been lurking for a few in this part of the forum. I currently own the Nexus 6 and they have reached EOL and was considering a jump to this one. Do you guys recommend it, I'm leery about the bootloop issues and early shut down of the phone but from what I've seen around the forums if you don't have those you guys are pretty happy with the device.

It is one of if not the best phones that came out at that time and is a fairly good price. The bootloop issues are not software related but occur when someone's battery degrades due to having it a long time or not taking care of it and how it is charged. Also the development on this phone including roms and kernels etc is some of the best. It is an amazing phone with no lags or bootloop issues and aslong as you aren't an idiot with your charging you shouldn't need to worry about any issues.

Plus I get to stick with Beans Roms, nothing against other developers as I'm sure they are good too but I've been a user of Beans roms for quite some time. Thanks, I loved my Nexus 6 but since it's only 32 bit it's time is coming to an end.
This happened to me today while browsing facebook.
My phone suddenly shut down. While trying to turn on, it would get to booting screen and then shut down again. It didn't loop - I had to try each time manually.
I cleared cache and reset it to factory settings to no avail. BUT once I got back home and managed to connect it to a charger (the battery was at estimated 90% capacity), everything runs smoothly. No shutdowns, no freezes - despite the phone getting warm. I stressed it quite a lot and it seems to hold, so I don't think this is related to the "bigger" CPU.
Could it possibly be a battery issue? Could my device be misreading the actual capacity of the battery?
As a sidenote: it did crash/shutdown once I disconnected the charger, but only after 20 minutes or so when I uninstalled a running at that time app.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, so I have something to work with and replace stuff accordingly - and hopefully not the entire phone, as I love my 6P.
It seems like it has to be connected to the battery, as it has been now holding (presumably) at 56% charge for over 4 (!) hours. AccuBattery shows the same data as what the phone reads, and now it seems that my power drain is in negative without charging the phone.
Sadly, there are no original replacements available in my country. Only cheap 3550mAh knockoffs that sellers call OEM. They do have Huawei logo, but everyone knows that 3450mAh is the only original capacity (right?)
Update: Nearly 20 hours on the same displayed 56% capacity.
Any help? Please?
No, you are wrong. Those 3550mAh batterys are the brand new ones from huawei. Those are the newest revision of the battery. Dont get the 3450 ones. If the seller is really selling a 3450mAh one, then its probably one of the old ones with the known issues.

Thanks for the heads-up. Just out of curiosity - how do you know that? When I contacted Huawei support, they did not answer me whether the 3550mah bat is a genuine product, or a farce. They avoided that question until they force-closed my support ticket without a proper answer.
First: Because i bought one and informed myself before. Then the new battery ran better then ever before. Even better then when the nexus 6p was new. Its the new batch that is better then ever before.
Second: you can read more about this topic in the correct forum thread about that: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78453441&postcount=1023
The thickness of the cable does not matter that much. Something you can care about is the weight. But this is something you can check when you got the new battery and also took the old one out.
To have longer battery life dont use the original charger. Use max a 5V 2A one. For example from a older Samsung mobile phone. Those have good electrical efficiency.

Thanks again.
For the 3 years I've bee using my 6P I never had battery life issues. In fact, even now the battery is holding well, despite the stats showing that my battery might be dying.
I came to this forum section looking for feedback on what could possibly be going on with my phone presenting the issues I am having. I am no mobile tech unlike many of guys around here. I might budge then and hope that the local Huawei repair center in my city will be of more help than the official Huawei support.
