Community development strength - Moto G6 Real Life Review

EDIT: XDA put my review in here for some reason.
As for developer strength, the G6 is easy enough to unlock/root, and with great band support and a cheap price it's likely to get some interest when Motorola stops updating it.
You can compare interest in various Motorola phones by scrolling through here to get a better idea: https://forum.xda-developers.com/motorola

It's a good affordable phone, but never really picked up popularity in the community when comparing to the big guns. Despite being easy to unlock/root, there still isn't a feasible way to upgrade the OS on a rooted phone without having to do a hard wipe each time.

Not to necro an old thread, but we should comment on where this forum was in 2019 vs 2020. Many developments have been made, 64 bit ROMS have been launched, major improvement year over year. As a power user, I'm very happy with the forum currently.
Cheers.

Razer should step in and help with the development because it's through this type of grass roots approach that you win XDA folks over. I mean, no root yet? People are also scared to root because they officially say they will not honor warranties? Razer grow up.
Razer's online chat support just told me that source code will be available for download on their support website on December 15th. I imagine after that happens development will take off, especially since we can unlock the bootloaders so easily already
We can only hope that is true. Look at what has happened with one plus and a strong community.

I wonder how many OnePlus phones though feel to the builtin engineering backdoor they were adding.
I'll never consider a OnePlus after the researcher found that sending data quietly back to OnePlus. I'm quite familiar with diagnostic data retrieval and how vital it is, but I'm not one to say shady practices are ok.
I was pretty concerned at first about Razer since they've never done anything cell phone wise, but at the same time, if they wanted to mine data, they could have done it long ago via Synapse.
Plus the fact that the researcher found root could be obtained by manipulating the process, that shows OnePlus either didn't care or was just that ignorant.
Apologies, I've been told left and right that OnePlus is better than this phone, but that's ignoring so much.
I can't wait for the development to take off once things progress. This phone has more potential than anything on the market right now.
I think it may be a good idea to start a donation pot that we can offer a senior recognized developer to help purchase this Phone for them.

They all do it. Even Google builds things into their OS for just that reason. Heck they were just found to be tracking location data even if you told them not to. So the only way to be sure is to build your own OS going over every single line of code. Unless you are do that then you really cant complain when they are caught doing just what the OS was made to do by a company that makes its money doing that.
Lack of root and dev support is a definite no no for me. I rooted one oneplus 5t loaded a custom rom and the thing now flies.

Na, that's a complacency statement there.
I would guess it was a new thing Google added. There's researchers out there everyday looking at these kinds of things. Of course it begs to question how long it's been there, but everything aside, they're using your data plans. That would result in an FCC, direct court case, licensing, fines, and if they get lucky a class action lawsuit.
The OS was not made to perform background actions to collect data on users. That is quite incorrect.

Yup. I cannot stand to think that some companies think it's their device even after you pay them hundreds of dollars for it.
Zero. twrp released and instructions don't work for many people. Code been out for over a month and not even an alpha ROM.

Do you regret buying MI A1?

Vote and post your comments on your beloved MI A1.
I should've bought RN4.
not regret because i have a feeling custom ROMS will fix all the issues we have. it's gonna be huge....
There are quite some problems with the phone but I guess custom ROM can somehow sort it out. For the price : performance ratio, it can't go wrong.
No. It will be very well supported by custom ROMs in the future I am sure, just like my old Moto G 2015 is one of the most popular devices running LineageOS. The price to performance is great as @soralz said despite Xiaomi taking their time on Oreo.
Neh. None at all.
It's the best budget phone that I can buy on my country, the camera is not at a flagship level but I don't take many photos and the rest is ok also the battery is enough for a complete day.
Off-toppic: @jglass071 I also have a Moto G 2015 running LOS 14.1
There are higher specification and lower price Chinese handsets available. Lets not pretend we all got a bargain. The dual camera is trash. The reason (most of us) bought this phone was for buttery smooth Android with first in line updates. This has turned out not to be the case.
So from my point of view I do regret buying the phone, as I could have had better spec Chinese phone (specifically battery) and flashed a custom ROM. Please lets not be childish and start asking me to list them. We can all use GSM arena compare tool.
Higher spec & lower price than Xiaomi mi a1 ... what a joke. The reason you chose it bcoz it's the cheapest budget phone with a good spec and much reliable Chinese brand.
Seriously ppl just dun understand you get what you've paid for. From what I see so far, ppl who ***** about this phone couldn't afford other than this. Pathetic ...
Sorry but you must have misread my previous post.
I stated I bought the phone for the Android One software. The hardware doesn't particularly bother me although it would have been nice to have a decent camera and a bigger battery.
For the price this early 2016 chip does the job and the phone should be good for another 6-12 months with only 4gb of onboard RAM.
Certainly a solid choice in this spending bracket.
Sorry you got so hot tempered with me about the phone, I guess you really love your MiA1 which I respect.
Maybe a quick browse on GSM Arena using compare tool? Always good to see what's out there. Of course, these options would be without the 'Android One' software.
Lol ... who doesn't know about GSMArena, I said that as I know you're unable to state out the phone higher spec and cheaper than xiaomi mi a1.
I'm happy for what I've paid for, it does what I've required and I'm sure there are room for it to improve. Unlike you guys being cheapskate, spent a little money and expect xiaomi to give premium supports. Late updates ended up like crying babies.
Some goes there are lotsa bloatwares and spywares ... for christ sake, you reckon Google, Microsoft, Apple doesn't gather users' information? Stop daydreaming there ...
It's a shame you have become so bitter about your failed investment.
Maybe learn to research the market more next time rather than take your frustrations out on others.
The biggest regret I have is buying it all full price, 2 weeks before the price dropped. No other regrets.
Name one phone with "higher specification and lower price" I bet you can't.
You're another non post reader. Look on GSM arena I'm not here to do your homework boy. Out of pity, I'll start you off with the Xiaomi MiMax2.
Lol max 2 is certainly neither higher specs Nor cheaper than a1.
Unfortunately you are badly wrong again. Mi max 2 is available for 'equi price' of MiA1 and with larger screen and battery.
Many thanks.
As I said, you may want to investigate GSM arena 'compare tool'.
Not at all.
Pure bloat-free android = bliss
No regrets! Good phone for the money.!
There are always some kids crying over delayed updates and "spyware", "bloatware",...
But really, who cares.
I'm satisfied with my A1!
That's great.
As long as you don't have expectations for Android One experience.

As a granny who has been developing software since 1980, I take exception to your ageism and sexism. Time you updated your attitudes like someone living in 2019 not 1919!
Luckily I can speak from heads on experience using Nokia, Ericcson and other Finnish OEM. Disregard the "woe is me " reviews and realize Nokia is just that, and Original Electronics Manufacturer, not a brand. Having grasped the difference, let's move on...
The Nokia 3.1 a is the best boxed phone as far as design. They've made use of the cheap plastic and introduced a form factor unseen in MVNO devices.
Yes it's cheap, inexpensive, and it's a phone for anyone who needs it for whatever reason. Typing on it now, it has less shame factor than a TCL device. Most people rely on XDA, for new resources to old problems. Having nothing to contribute other than a list of what the device does not do does what the Nokia thread does; it illicits few responses.
Android 9, 32 rom, cleaner UI, AND comfortable and weight feel of the device = it beats all boxed phones other than LG Risio3. It CAN be carrier unlocked after 6 patient months or sooner using an nuk generation key. ITS been out for 2 years so the later probably applies.
Need a phone not a runway full of uneducated faf, buy it or don't. phone in a box is just that, quick disposable communication if needed. 80$ beats the 159$ it premiered at. Ok...

.... And having a 1080 v 720 res using plastic not CGG3 is a plus. It's 9 compared to Samsung S 3( now that was a sad one)

Slow for updates. Not many options I see being developed for it.
Why isn't there a holographic display smart ring/watch yet?
I'm getting mine tomorrow, but I really hope that they either fix their update issues or let us unlock the bootloader! Hopefully the fact that it's part of the Q beta in Korea is a sign of good things to come!!!
It has a lot of Android that made me get into custom ROMs in the first place; Lots of options and functionality. For a locked phone, it's pretty flexible. I'm less experienced, what does the community think of the claims that locking the bootloader increases security?
The LG G7 never received a single Custom ROM afaik...
I'm disappointed that such a great phone doesn't have much of a community. I'd do something if I could but I just don't have the knowledge or skill set to be of much help.
I came from the XT1254 that I had for 5 years and loved it. Got this G8 and so far I'm liking it Alot. Could be just the 5 years in between but, good phone! I would love to see bl unlock and /or root! ?

The phone has been released for a month now, but there are 0 development threads. In the past I owned phones like HTC HD2 and Pocophone F1, 5 II is my first Sony smartphone. Ever since the HD2, development has been one of the most important things when buying a phone to me, but this time I didn't see a lot of options. Now I'm worried I won't be able to use the 5 II to it's full potential.

Like I said, Sony seemed like the only way to go. I hate big screens, I'll never use Exynos and I'm done with giving my money to chinese corporations.
