Slow for updates. Not many options I see being developed for it.

Why isn't there a holographic display smart ring/watch yet?

I'm getting mine tomorrow, but I really hope that they either fix their update issues or let us unlock the bootloader! Hopefully the fact that it's part of the Q beta in Korea is a sign of good things to come!!!

It has a lot of Android that made me get into custom ROMs in the first place; Lots of options and functionality. For a locked phone, it's pretty flexible. I'm less experienced, what does the community think of the claims that locking the bootloader increases security?

The LG G7 never received a single Custom ROM afaik...

I'm disappointed that such a great phone doesn't have much of a community. I'd do something if I could but I just don't have the knowledge or skill set to be of much help.

I came from the XT1254 that I had for 5 years and loved it. Got this G8 and so far I'm liking it Alot. Could be just the 5 years in between but, good phone! I would love to see bl unlock and /or root! ?

Future root and ROM community?

Really disappointed with my LG G4.
It took months to get root, there are 10 variants each with different software and only 1 has an officially unlocked boot-loader. There are virtually no custom ROMs for my phone.
What do you guys predict this phone will be like within the modding community? Hardware wise this would be a step down for me, but if that means a decent trade-off software wise I think it would be worth it. And maybe what do you guys think about posing my question towards the 2015 Nexus 5?
Hardware wise the g4 and the style are almost identical. What's a step down? If root and romming are high priorities for you, I'd look for the nexuses
Sent from my Nexus 10
Well the camera on the G4 is a bit nicer, the removable battery is nicer, larger expandable storage, barometer, ect. Compare on phonearena. Theres no debating the G4 is a better phone, but software wise it's not the phone for me. I think I can stick it out till October. Sucks waiting while my G4 drops in value.
I'll give you the camera ? Being that the X pure will be sim unlocked I think most of us are assuming the bootloaders will be easily unlockable. On the other hand, the dev community is always the best for nexus phones.
Sent from my Nexus 10
I think the main reason that the dev community sucks on the LG G4 (I almost got it earlier in the year until I was following the root debacle) is that only one model (the international 815 variant) had an unlockable bootloader and root took forever to achieve. With the Moto -- being a "pure" or "dev-like" non-carrier chained model, there is a large assumption that the bootloader will be easily unlocked and if this is the case, root should be no harder than flashing the latest SuperSU.
The recently released Moto G has an unlockable bootloader, as do previous non-carrier linked Moto X's -- so there is no reason to believe ours won't be as well: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215
And if/when the bootloader if opened, you should start to see a healthy dose of deving -- although many people have raved how "pure" Moto's implementation of Android is, so you may find you may not need to flash a new ROM, but instead maybe just root and a few key utilities like Xposed to get what you want. I flashed custom ROMs on almost every phone I've had, with the exception of the Nexus 5 -- because there really wasn't a need to. But it's nice to have choices
It seems to me that there is less available for the Moto X 2014 in terms of ROMs, kernels and such than I'd have expected. That's good reason for a lot of us to pin our hopes on the Huawei Nexus. I was figuring that there would be heavy development for the Pure. But now, I'm not quite so sure. Will Motorola release the source code?
I agree that Xposed can cover a bunch of things that ROMs would. I don't always use them, either. But as pinoymutt says, it's nice to have choices.
Guys remember we cannot predict the dev community for this device yet. I think this will attract a lot of attention because it is a uncarrier version and cheap. If you compare to the moto x 2014 it isn't exactly the same situation because they had carrier versions and what not. The price for this device is also attractive so I think the dev community will explode. From day one we can all have our bootloaders unlocked and as soon as someone converts TWRP we will be off to the races. One thing is certain, this will have a lot more support over the G4. I'm excited to see what will happen
I would lay decent odds that this device will see more than adequate support. No carrier limitation, unlocked and cheap with great specs is going to draw people in.
Guys, any idea if there will be a way to remove the greetings in the future if we decide to chose one with Moto maker?

It's probably a boot animation that can be adjusted. I've never had a moto device but I bet there are tools out there

On the previous Xs there was an option to delete it when you did a factory reset.
I think this phone will have an excellent community following here. There are a lot of posts here considering nobody has the phone yet. The critics will always do their thing but I'm thinking we have a winner here. I'm looking forward to it.

Quite good
I don't get the EMUI 8.1 still even though I've read lots of articles stating I should have got as one of the first phones it was sent to. I call Huawei and they saying it's cause there doing batches of 10000 phones a time and I should get it sometime before the end of the year. Which is proper shiiiite!!! And the chance of getting EMUI9 looks far away, unless I'm wondering the might just skip 8.1 go onto 9 but that's being optimistic. Also not had security update for months either. What can I do as feel Huawei are promoting there doing these updates in press but in reality it's not how it is... My mums even had the update on P20 lite she got her phone after the date Huawei stated in press they were rolling out to mate 10 pro yet she's ended up with and still nothing for mate 10 pro.
Anyone any ideas on dealing with Huawei other than just resigning myself to there just not to be believed and are really bad at rolling out updates. Like the phone but this has put my faith in Huawei in debate. It's like once they sold you the phone they can't be arsed to keep it updated properly or even to there own timetable. Think I'll consider oneplus next phone they seem have there act together.
And they stopped giving out unlock codes so I can't even custom ROM to get around it myself which I would have done for sure than wait for ever for bloody Huawei. Do you think it is worth me trying to get a unlock code from them on the basis there not updating my phone so the least thet can do is enable me to sort it out myself!!!?? Reckon worth trying or should I just suck it in and resign to fact huawei will send updates much much later than they promote like several months late. And if they don't improve never by a huawei phone again or recommend to friends family which I have done until now.
Sorry bit of a rant but these things piss me off as big tech firms think they can say and do what they like n tell you jog on and accept no responsibility or acceptable reason other than nothing they can do u get it when we can be arsed!!!
Here in Europe we're getting too much updates in fact
EMUI is good but the only thing that I really hate are the ****ty themes damn why are they so crap?? why cant it be like Samsung themes that changes everything and not only the home screen icons and the wallpaper. huawei really needs to improve their theme engine and theme store cuz they suck ass.

Razer should step in and help with the development because it's through this type of grass roots approach that you win XDA folks over. I mean, no root yet? People are also scared to root because they officially say they will not honor warranties? Razer grow up.
Razer's online chat support just told me that source code will be available for download on their support website on December 15th. I imagine after that happens development will take off, especially since we can unlock the bootloaders so easily already
We can only hope that is true. Look at what has happened with one plus and a strong community.

I wonder how many OnePlus phones though feel to the builtin engineering backdoor they were adding.
I'll never consider a OnePlus after the researcher found that sending data quietly back to OnePlus. I'm quite familiar with diagnostic data retrieval and how vital it is, but I'm not one to say shady practices are ok.
I was pretty concerned at first about Razer since they've never done anything cell phone wise, but at the same time, if they wanted to mine data, they could have done it long ago via Synapse.
Plus the fact that the researcher found root could be obtained by manipulating the process, that shows OnePlus either didn't care or was just that ignorant.
Apologies, I've been told left and right that OnePlus is better than this phone, but that's ignoring so much.
I can't wait for the development to take off once things progress. This phone has more potential than anything on the market right now.
I think it may be a good idea to start a donation pot that we can offer a senior recognized developer to help purchase this Phone for them.

They all do it. Even Google builds things into their OS for just that reason. Heck they were just found to be tracking location data even if you told them not to. So the only way to be sure is to build your own OS going over every single line of code. Unless you are do that then you really cant complain when they are caught doing just what the OS was made to do by a company that makes its money doing that.
Lack of root and dev support is a definite no no for me. I rooted one oneplus 5t loaded a custom rom and the thing now flies.

Na, that's a complacency statement there.
I would guess it was a new thing Google added. There's researchers out there everyday looking at these kinds of things. Of course it begs to question how long it's been there, but everything aside, they're using your data plans. That would result in an FCC, direct court case, licensing, fines, and if they get lucky a class action lawsuit.
The OS was not made to perform background actions to collect data on users. That is quite incorrect.

Yup. I cannot stand to think that some companies think it's their device even after you pay them hundreds of dollars for it.
Zero. twrp released and instructions don't work for many people. Code been out for over a month and not even an alpha ROM.

EDIT: XDA put my review in here for some reason.
As for developer strength, the G6 is easy enough to unlock/root, and with great band support and a cheap price it's likely to get some interest when Motorola stops updating it.
You can compare interest in various Motorola phones by scrolling through here to get a better idea: https://forum.xda-developers.com/motorola
It's a good affordable phone, but never really picked up popularity in the community when comparing to the big guns. Despite being easy to unlock/root, there still isn't a feasible way to upgrade the OS on a rooted phone without having to do a hard wipe each time.
Not to necro an old thread, but we should comment on where this forum was in 2019 vs 2020. Many developments have been made, 64 bit ROMS have been launched, major improvement year over year. As a power user, I'm very happy with the forum currently.
Cheers.

The phone has been released for a month now, but there are 0 development threads. In the past I owned phones like HTC HD2 and Pocophone F1, 5 II is my first Sony smartphone. Ever since the HD2, development has been one of the most important things when buying a phone to me, but this time I didn't see a lot of options. Now I'm worried I won't be able to use the 5 II to it's full potential.

Like I said, Sony seemed like the only way to go. I hate big screens, I'll never use Exynos and I'm done with giving my money to chinese corporations.
