All Moto X 2014 Owners Please Read

Hello, i just wanted bring all of you together to read this thread. Ok so i know since you've been a Moto owner, you've heard or seen at least once insulting comment about your device or the Motorola company. For example, "Anything that Motorola makes sucks" "People only get them because they're cheap" "That phone is crappy". I know that those people are ignorant to other people's liking. I'm tired of hearing the same thing. A lot of people that own super expensive high end- flashy smartphones say things like that about devices like the Moto series. Well that really offends me, just because they might not be the most high-end smartphones or the most expensive smartphones doesn't mean they are worthless. We Moto owners take great pride in our device, we appreciate what we have and we value our smartphones.
If someone offered me a brand new Galaxy S6 and a brand new Moto X and said i could only pick one. I would pick the Moto X hands down without a doubt in my mind. Because I know, We know what matters in a smartphone. What is that? User experience and performance for the price. That's what a review comes down to at the end of the day. A company could make a super spec'd out smartphone but get the same review score as a phone a fraction of its cost. I know if i were to buy a $1000 smartphone it better be great in every aspect and i know if i bought a smartphone for half that price, i'm not expecting it to be perfect but i want to have a good performance. That's exactly what motorola does, it gives you a great performing phone for the price.
For example, the Moto G. It has a low price point but does everything you need it to do. If I want a super powerful gaming machine of a smartphone, I'm not going to buy the Moto G. Then give a bad review for not being able to do what i wanted it to. I'm gonna buy a smartphone with a powerful chipset. At the end of the day we Moto owners stand out. Other people don't seem to understand our taste in smartphones value. Im not saying if you own a super expensive phone you're a bad person or anything. I'm just saying you get what you pay for. All of you Moto owners, good job in picking a smartphone. It doesn't matter if you have a Moto E, a Moto G or a Moto X. We all are equal and unified. #Teammoto

Most people I talk to in my cell phone repair shop are ignorant to Motorola smartphones. They see my phone and ask what it is. Then they say that it looks nice.

Let those say whatever they want to because they are not aware of the fact that Motorola is the one who created mobile industry, rest are just parts of this industry. Real innovator is Motorola, rest just follow up whatever is left out by Motorola. Even today no other phone can beat a MotoX in terms of 'smartness', rest just feel dumb phones in front of a Moto X.
Motorola users don't need to frequently change their devices because they are more durable, can keep going for few generations of OS versions, come at cheaper price point. A 2-3 years Moto can easily keep going till the next Moto replaces it. You hardly see other brand's phones over 2 years old in anyone's hands. Others just fight needless specs war whereas specs is not everything. so called small battery and poor camera of my MotoX never miss the chance of surprising me by their performance, thats engineering, not just putting useless counts of cores or big spec battery or a high pixel density display which unnecessarily eats up the additional CPU power or battery.
Offcourse there are flaws in the Moto devices also but others are much more flawed. I am currently fighting a consumer court case against poor after sales service provided by Motorola when they took forever to repair a defective MotoE under warranty but that bad incident isn't enough to reduce my love and respect towards the Motorola brand.
Their strong comeback in the market after going completely dead is one more reason to buy their devices because it motivates to wake up and fight in the life, doesn't matter whatever trouble life throws on us. :good:
Let the ignorant people go gaga over whatever they want to, it doesn't changes the reality, does it?

the sad thing is that we are on a new level of "low" on the Dev part of our community.. only a few roms and most of them 5.0.x, only one custom kernel and only for CM based roms.. id love to have a custom kernel on my stock but rooted to be able to play with synapse to tamper with settings to "beast-out" ok gaming and more out of battery for everyday use..
about the talk.. heh I've been experiencing these kind of things at work when they see me use the my phone.. waving my hand over it to check my notifications.. they are so jealous [emoji13]

Motorola is still a great manufacturer, designer, innovater of awesome phones! The X series are the living proofs of this! Many users hate the company now because motorola promised them faster updates and has been really slow and non transparent in terms of updates!
I think motorola has done a great job in terms of updates and phones in general! Leaving the S6 which had 5.0 out of the box, no other manufacturer has provided 5.1 update to any of their phones yet other than the nexus line! People would never understand that 5.0 to 5.0.2 were buggy! They just want an update so they could think less of it and start complaining about the next version of android not being given to them in time! I say such people should buy nexus phones to get timely updates and stop the ranting!
For other people who have a higher price higher spec phones dont know much about android. They just buy a high spec phone thinking its future proof and later understand that there are many more newer innovations at a lesser price. Such people always keep wasting money in those high specs! Motorola doesn't provide high specs. But it provides the perfect balance of specs and working and useful features in their phones which are more useful in daily use and thus it makes the phones a daily driver.
The only problem with their phone is the fragile screen. Its glass and glass tends to break when it takes a hit. But the cost to replace it is too much! In India we need to pay 75% of the purchase cost to get the screen replaced! That's what is keeping people from buying motorola!

That is because the source is still stuck back at 5.0.2. It would be great if we could get more up to date source.

I got my s3 when it was a flagship device and had a Samsung phone earlier. The primary reason I got the moto X was the price due to the cyber Monday sale. I saved up anticipating that the nexus 6 would be around the same price as the 5 but it turned out to be very expensive for me.
I had a few apprehensions before getting this device as I had never owned a moto device, but the X has exceeded my expectations! For the price, I don't think any other phone offers similar build quality and specs. Sure a bigger battery or a SD card slot would have been sweet but I feel that this is the perfect blend of stock plus nifty Moto features. I'm so used to active display now that I don't think I can actually use a device without it!
As far as updates are concerned, I'd rather have a fully functional 5.1 build rather than a messed up quickly released and buggy one. The delay has been a little annoying with multiple soak tests but if it results in a near bug free build then I'd rather wait!
All in all very satisfied with the phone.

Mi Mix EVO with Snapdragon 835 leaked on Geekbench

Looks like there is a higher-end variant of the Mi Mix in the horizon called the Mi Mix Evo. Leaked Geekbench screenshot shows Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM.
I wonder whether it will have a better camera sensor.
I'm not worried about the Snapdragon 835. I knew there were many new devices from Samsung, LG and the like with better specs than the Mix, coming out soon.
I expected the Mix to be a "one of a kind" device for a while, like how the Xperia Z Ultra was, at one point of time.
If the rumors pan out to be true, the fact that it may change that, is a bit disappointing I guess.
Moreover, judging from Xiaomi's history with previous devices, it doesn't look like we may see a lot of development for the device. Add to the fact, a very small community of us here and an even smaller community of users at the MIUI forums.
Does anyone regret buying the Mix, considering the Mix Evo would be sold at a similar price?

This would be cool if it has something other than a ceramic or glass body.
It'd be refreshing to have a ruggedized shell/display,no need for a case.
Otherwise, I don't have regrets.
Worldwide 2G/3G/4G/LTE support would be the main spec to consider trading up.
An I-R Blaster & wireless charging would seal the deal.
There's a lot of nice phones hitting the market soon,most of us here will be experiencing some measure of buyers remorse, especially if you're strictly a one-phone-at-a-time user.
HTC's latest U Series devices look nice.The Ultra is tempting (for me),but, I'm passing.
Besides,they will likely introduce yet another flagship @ MWC.Ditto with Huawei (P10), Samsung & LG.
It's a vicious nonstop cycle that's a real Love/Hate experience for those of us who use little to no restraint in trying out virtually everything on the market. ?
With that said, I'm outta here for a bit,got a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro that just delivered & a Huawei Mate 9 delivering tomorrow.
An intervention is definitely in order,LOL......?

Do you sell off all your old devices or keep them? I buy mine outright and mostly keep them. When my cycle hit 6 months I had to grab myself by the neck and slow it down. Can't let this consumerism consume me :laugh:

Most of my phone deals have been leases via T-Mobile's JumpOnDemand.
I've sold a few,not many,but, the trio of Xiaomi Mi MIX/Redmi Note 3 Pro/Huawei Mate 9 look to be long-term keepers,having buying them outright.
If I do need to thin the herd,I'll list 'em on Swappa,as other sites/private sales net only a fraction of their worth.

I have to admit that I'm pretty annoyed by this news. I literally just ordered this phone a day ago and they are already anouncing a better variant? Like I didn't have enough buyers regret already

I got a serious phone problem. I'm currently on the S7 which I have no complaints about but I always need something new. I always like MIUI though so hopefully I'll enjoy this phone and be content with it for a while.

Been chasing that same Android Unicorn for five or six years now,kinda made a New Years resolution to curb it a bit ,but,as you,not successful,two new phones this month alone,not counting the Mix..........
I rationalize my habit by telling myself "I could be doing worse things"............

Hey, since I have your ear what's your current setup for this phone? Did you root and install TWRP? What ROM are you running? Any Xposed?

My phone came with an unlocked bootloader.
As soon as I realized that, I installed TWRP,made a backup of whatever was on my phone & jumped to the EU ROM,switched seamlessly to GlobeROM (very similar).
I have most MIUI/Xiaomi apps disabled,using SD Maid Pro.
Using Nova Launcher Pro & MIUI Xposed,I believe there's a thread here somewhere with the links for the proper version of Xposed for MIUI 8.
If not,just ping me & I'll post/PM 'em to you.......

In photography we call that Gear Acquisition Syndrome (gas).
The way I fixed it is to use the older generation for a while. I had a pretty serious issue with phones before but was forced to use my original xperia z1 after g4 had bootloop issue.
Turns out the z1 is so lovable that I didn't even bother fixing the g4. I only got the mix since it's one of a kind phone.
The hardware upgrade is getting insignificant. Even with a 50% battery improvement on the mix, it wouldn't be that important since the original mix is already pretty damn good.

Got this device just a few weeks back. I knew there were next gen phones with next gen specs coming out around Feb- March, which didn't bother me much. I bought the Mix, knowing this is a unique device. If an upgraded version hits the market too soon,, it will significantly diminish the value of the Original Mix. Moreover, we may not see much in terms of development if the interest for this device goes down too soon. And considering Xiaomi isn't very good at releasing kernel sources, we may even be on Marshmallow for a long long time. And that kinda sucks, especially for people who don't switch phones too often!

Before people start getting too pissed off, bear in mind the sheer volume of fake rumours that surface in relation to Xiaomi handsets - probably more even than for Samsung or Apple.
There's already been the debunked news about the Mi Mix Nano, not to mention the rumoured SD821-toting Mi S that never materialised, the rumours about a Mi 5C that have so far come to naught and a lot of Mi Note 2 rumours that turned out to be incorrect.
For all we know, that's just a test unit for the SD835 Xiaomi are using that's been given some random name - or even a completely faked benchmark.

Most of the angst is tongue-in-cheek,most here know how the life cycle of the smartphone scene is in constant change.
Those truly upset would do better to find a hobby that's just as consuming,but,easier on the wallet,or,focus on finding the best in the low-to-midrange segment (Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro,OnePlus,etc.....)

Just hoping Xiaomi releases Kernel source for this device. As long as we see some real development for this device, I don't have any problems even if they bring one with Snapdragon 840.
The oneplus 3/3T has some really good ROMs, is based on the same chipset and if we have the source for the Mix, guess we can port a few ROMs. AOSP or CM anyone?

Nothing like forced perspective to appreciate the MIX:
1) Just finished setting up my Redmi Note3 Pro & while it's definitely a great device, arguably the best bang for the buck available,it can't hold a candle to the Mix.
2) Same with my Samsung Galaxy Note4,is still a great phone,but,even with its S-Pen/I-R Blaster/expandable storage & removable battery, I'd pick the MIX without any hesitation.The performance/display/battery life are outstanding, exceeding expectations big time.

Don't get me wrong, I completely get how frustrating it is to shell out for something and have it be superceded shortly after, even when you know it's likely to happen.
And should Xiaomi turn around and announce a superior Mi Mix a couple of months after I got mine, I'd be first in line to whine about it.
But having spent something like 10 months last year waiting for a phone I wanted to splash out on, I've come to realise just how low the wheat-to-chaff ratio is with Xiaomi rumours. So I'll hold off on complaining until I know for a fact what's happening

Each to their own, of course, but for me a huge part of the appeal of the Mi Mix is MIUI - any other ROM would feel like know was losing part of what makes the Mix so great.

[rant] Starting to hate Moto/Lenovo :(

They release new phones quicker than they release updates. Reading about the Oreo update on GSMAarena, just made my blood boil ... "That said, the Moto Z Play is unlikely to receive another update for some time (or ever)".
Yes, maybe GSMArena is wrong and we will get security fixes after the Oreo update. But so far, Moto/Lenovo has disappointed me with their slow and sparse OTAs.
Seeing how they are going to release the Moto Z3 Play soon just makes me angry. The performance increase is minimal, the battery will most likely be as small as the one in the Moto Z2 Play, or smaller.
Am I stupid to think that a new model of anything should be improved so much that owners of the current model might want to upgrade? At least after the third generation? The Z2 and Z3 series are aimed at new customers, not at owners of a Z1.
@Moto/Lenovo: Slow the f**k down! Support your cr*p with regular updates! And release new phones when technology (CPU, battery, camera ...) has improved significantly to make the next generation of phones interesting to your current customers!

Yeah the Z2 play was a dud. Take the main selling point of this phone and nerf it... the battery.
I'd be very happy though with an incremental upgrade, maybe some more RAM and a 636 CPU... but make it IP68 waterproof! So far though looks like the Z3 Play is also a dud with a 3000mah battery.
The Galaxy A7 is basically the kind of phone I'd like, but without all the Samsung bloat. Bigger battery than the Z Play and waterproof. Maybe 4GB+ of RAM would be nice though.

That's why i will not waiting for z3play and buy honor view 10. It's sad that Motorola phones not appeal anymore and hope they will make intresting phone so people again look at them.

Exactly, battery and headphone plug
I could imaging that Moto (and others!) simply want to have the newest CPU in their phones, so that they "rank better" ... on price comparison sites ... or to give salesmen a simple reason to sell "this phone over that one".
Apart from that, it doesn't make sense at all. We have Apple and Samsung as the big players. The others come up with something different every now and then. Due to their "always the newest hardware strategy", they either produce the same products as everyone else, or they kill their darlings by dropping them like a hot, half-arsed potato. In the end, only the price tag determines which phone will sell. And Moto has no way to compete against "true Chinese brands" in that respect.
Even worse, some of those "crappy Chinese brands" actually do offer more regular updates and longer support...
It's a shame that no one in the business has balls (or a uterus) and does something extraordinary and stand out from the crowd.

We got 2 OS updates on on this phone and security patches also have been coming through, what is the rant about?.... Google itself promises 2 years of updates, so we are at par with that philosophy, not behind... Infact even after releasing so many new phones after the z play, they have not forgotten it, is commendable no?

Exactly.
It got the same amount of updates as a flagship. What else do you want? Do you think Samsung is going to give Android P to Galaxy S7 users or what? You're also up to date with security patches. I can't see another big brand updating their mid-range as long as Motorola did.
OS updates end here but they will continue to provide security patches if they want. Most people upgrade after 2 years anyway.

Sorry, that is pure whataboutism. The notion that other companies don't support their products doesn't make it acceptable in any way.
I am not concerned about not getting Android P, but I would like to have Oreo supported with security fixes.

We're so happy they throw us a few crumbs we forget they're sitting at a feast, for an analogy.

Well let's see
1) whataboutism ; while it was alluded to and I don't endorse bringing others down but peers are the natural reference point , apples to apples right !
2) 1 year support and the 2 year debate: this one is a totally different discussion. I guess the topic is a rant against Motorola , so we are debating if Motorola did good or not. But the 2 year update issue is a different issue. From Google itself there is an ownership deficit with andoid, they don't feel responsible enough for it, like say apple does for iOS. In the name of open source, they have gotten away with a lot of accountability. If today Google owns up and pushes OEMs, things can change drastically, but they won't because they are happy spreading the Google ecosystem everywhere.
3) buying new phones ; this is a value debate ie did you get enough value for the money you paid, I would say a resounding yes for this phone. Well pixels and iphones have 3 yr or 5 yrs support but the damage accordingly is nuclear to the pocket

<rant>The Moto Z Play now has the April 2018 security patch along with Oreo. Motorola has not said there will be no more updates to it. It was just the musings of some blogger who happened to make assertions without any evidence. I for one enjoy the battery life of the Z Play but prefer the Z2 Play because the carrier version has an FM radio and has more built-in storage and RAM. It also has WiFi calling for T-Mobile.
I buy the Z phones primarily because of the MODS. That is what makes these phones special. Try adding battery on any other phone as elegantly? Not possible. Perhaps they will be releasing a Hi-Fi DAC mod for the Z3 Play which could give better performance than you can get inside the phone. At least with the MOD system that is possible. If they make it 64-Bit then it will probably be a part of the Android Enterprise Recommended program which the Z2 Force is a part of, and that allows for Android security updates within 90 days of release from Google, for a minimum of two years.
I would rather all the people who don't see the value of the mods buy some other phone because any manufacturer can put a bigger battery on a phone, but no one else has created a platform that allows for elegant extensions and upgrades. You can slap on a mod and get 5G service. How many other phones out here now can be 5G ready so easily? If you read about the mod documentation you will see that they are innovating in the hardware area.</rant>

So i bought this phone since it released in my country, i bought the 6Gb ram version and i was too excited about, Android one phone with great specs according to the price, but i am a lil bit disappointed right now,
The update releases is a bit confusing as we can see what's happening with pie updates.
The development is too slow as there no working twrp and related stuff.
Forgive my ignorance as coming from HTC M8 with its big development from its early stages , this phone disappointed me, but dont get me wrong i am happy with the phone regarding its battery life what annoying me a bit but the fast charger make it up to me.
So based on ur experience guys what do u expect guys and is the fourms going to be on fire soon or is it going to be like that all along ?

its going to be alive for sure, but you won't get first-class support, also for sure. this phone is good for people who are on a budget yet want to have a fairly up-to-date software (including security updates) and don't expect pixel-level support. If you are one of these people, A2 is probably one of the best phones you can get. But if you expect a pixel-level support then you should probably go buy pixel

Software r&d is not cheap as yu can see many here on xda develop on in there spare time and with donations and i dont think even though xiaomi have great revenue and sales they are yet ready to speed up the process (FOR ME UPDATES ARE ALREADY FAST ENOUGH EVEN NOW BETTER THAN MY SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 THAT WAS WORTH 49999 rs)
Moral of the story is = just because yu are given good hardware at a fine price dont expect them to give yu fast software support too ( only if yu have a pixel )
Otherwise apple phones get ios for really long time( enjoy there new emoji in every damn update )

Mates i didn't expect pixel level of support at all, it just i didnt think Android One phone would get low development and update like that,
I can run Android pie on my M8 which pretty old phone now, but u cant run it on my 2018 Android one device, does that make any sense to you mates ??
On the other hand pocophone got it's official TWRP and keep being updated while the price difference is t that much though.

Why the hell are yu guys quoting me when i am making the exact same point that yu made
This is a budget phone not pixel lile ( COMPARED TO MY S7 JUST TO MAKE A POINT and even if my s7 is a flagship it gets security patches at end of each month whereas this MI A2 Gets updated on start of each month and that too sometimes more than one update )

I used to use an OPO which had and to a certain extent still has a lively developer scene (It's been a few months since the first Pie popped in the forums for it).
I don't neither expect nor foresee that sort of activity over here. This is a mid-range budget phone.
Then again, at least, bootloader unlock is hassle free.

I came from an OPO myself. And kind of disappointed with lack of development for now. It's a new phone and hopefully it'll pick up. It's a good phone don't get me but it's a "meh" or "alright" phone after a few weeks. Definitely a forgettable phone. Feel like I should've gone pocophone fone (1)

I'm here for your opinion. My current phone, Mi 9 (got this for 2 years... Probably close to the longest I kept a phone, not because I loved it, just because nothing excited me in the meanwhile), is starting to annoy me with the USB port not working 70% of the time, etc.
So I'm on the lookout for a new device to get next month.
Choices are I think:
Mi 11/whatever Pro version will be (dev for Xiaomi is just OK, and there is really no accessories to find, and I'm a case collection wh*re ^^)
Samsung S21+ (I say byebye to flashing fun for a couple years)
Pixel 5
OP8 Pro (can find some good deals for it)
Thing is I'm thinking that OP9 cannot be so far off, but how will the price be? I'm sure I won't care for SD 888 so it's not really about the specs, I mostly worry about weither or not the price will be right.
I guess my days of new phone every year are gone as well, so would be good to have something with a bit of long term support.
So question here in OP8 forums, do you think it's going to still be a relevant device for a while yet? Or should I look in 2021 stuff?

The OnePlus 9 should still be very good device. We don't know enough about it yet like prices, cameras, etc. Maybe available in March...stay tuned!

The good things of OnePlus devices are....
- easy unlock bootloader
- unbrick tool available
- custom roms/kernel available
You might wait the review of OnePlus 9 Pro , not sure when.
I have seen development in Mi 10 Pro forum in XDA not much development there.

I suggest you to wait for op 9 pro since current flagman op 8 pro have very big troubles with display

If you're in the US then fair enough, if you're anywhere else then it's not worth it, it's not the same phone.
It'll overheat, battery won't be as good, my OnePlus 8 Pro would outpace it by some way, the GPU is awful.
Avoid the exynos at all costs, even the camera processing is worse on the exynos.
Check before you buy

You could get the port and battery replaced.
I'd wait till latter in the year to see what rolls out. The economy is tanking so likely it will be more of a buyer's market.
In my opinion Samsung's latest offerings suck.
I wouldn't buy anything without an SD card slot.
The SD card makes an ideal data drive... yes a dual drive 1tb laptop in your hand.
A used good condition 10+ 512gb 12gb ram 4G variant can be had for around $600 at reliable seller B&H Photo.
This was Samsung's last good Note, running on Pie it's very stable, fast and runs well.
No 5G on this model means better battery life. For most 5G speeds suck.

Even if you're in the States, I'd think twice about getting a Samsung (aka Applesauce)

Hmm I see what you mean.
I don't care for SD really. Most OP phones don't have them for a while and so do many. By the way, I cannot remember when was the last time I had a phone with an SD card slot?
Also my point is to be able to make good pictures.
Leaves me with Samsung, if we believe tests Xiaomi 11 or iPhone.
iPhone nope. I like the look of the 12 series, but stuff like my watch would not work well with that.
Xiaomi why not but I want a change. Also, maybe they are headed the way of Huawei?
OP9 may do good pics but will it be : good pictures but not great for a flagship story?
