Infinity Display = Slightly Deceptive Advertising - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Don't get me wrong, this is the most beautiful phone I've ever had and probably the best of 2017 even when iPhone 8 comes out.
And also the smallest bezels.
However it's just a small detail that irks me. Which is that in Samsung's ads it showcases the screen UI go as far as the glass to the side frame. But when you turn on the screen you can clearly see it doesn't reach as far as the glass does and as in their ads. It's still small Bezels but not as thin on the sides as Samsung makes people want to believe.

You know what bugs me the most about the ads is when it shows off the camera, the view finder always fills the entire screen...

You can do that. Change the resolution to 9.6, (16:9), it will fill the "entire" screen

If you watch though it is filling literally the entire screen, switching the picture size does make the view finder larger but it does not match what is shown on the commercials.

Ah, yeah I get what you mean, it does say screen images emulated however.

Yeah, I was just throwing it in for being a bit deceptive, it doesn't bother me but it would look pretty cool to have that as an actual option.

I'm pretty sure the fine print in the commercial says all images are simulated.

Anyone else's screen like this?

Did anyone else notice how the screen can be kinda grainy? its only really noticable if your kinda close to the screen and most noticible on text in a web page or something thin. Is it normal for OLEDs or is something wrong with my phone
I can at least confirm that compared to the G1, the Nex1 screen is insanely oversaturated and the contrast is really high. You might also be noticing that in many applications lazily designed for smaller screen dimensions, raster graphics are being scaled up, which causes nasty artifacting (text and pure vector apps should be okay, though).
And now that you mention it, if I hold the phone *really* close to my face, the dot patterns are a little more visible than on a non-OLED.
][
i know for a fact the oversaturation is normal. OLED displays show much more saturated colors than LCDs because of their design. Im talking specifically about the grainyness meaning how edges look kind of dotty its hard to explain with words lol. Its usually not noticible unless you hold it up close to your face or youre specifically looking for it.

Those are called pixels.. put your nose to any LCD screen and you'll see the same..
It's because some things just weren't built for the higher res screen the N1 sports compared to other Android devices, that and the screen has a significantly sharper image than any other phone I've looked at.
Yeah, you can tell some apps and widgets werent designed for hi-res, this phone is blowin me away so far though, I love my G1 and mytouch but they got nothin on this beast

You're seeing it more because of the nature of the OLED screen methinks, everything is much more pronounced, which is why it creates such a nice picture.
im asking if YOU are noticing it lol
Yea, if I look really really really really close I can sort of see it, nothing to worry about though
like how close? youre making it sound like youre using an electron microscope or something. I can begin to notice it about half a foot away!
sorry if i sound nit-picky I payed 530$ and want to make sure my phone is perfect (especially since im probably gonna void my warranty and unlock the bootloader)
If my nose is almost touching it I can see the pixels somewhat, depends what application I'm looking at though.
i can just imagine all of you guys just stilling there putting this nexus one up to your noses and having someone walk in and yell "WTF are you doing?!"
... blueman did you notice this as well or no
unfortunately my nexus one is still somewhere in between Moutain View and Vegas.
Melt, I can see what you're talking about but I don't really notice it unless I'm looking for it or like someone else said I hold it right next to my face, but I can't tell what you're freakin out about cause as a whole my display looks damn amazing.
why are people so paranoid about things?
cause these things cost 530$ + tax.
the grainyness you're seeing is probably upscaled images from 3rd party applications. Since the Droid and Nexus one both have super high res screens, some applications graphics wont fit properly, and the phone will resize them without re-rendering it.
Kinda like trying to print a 1 megapixel image on a billboard, it will turn into giant pixels.
The stock android apps should look fine though. So far I've been very pleased with the display and how things look.
hope this helps. I work a lot with graphics.

Now you got me curious. I can notice the pixel grain (especially on gradient backgrounds) at about 5" or closer. I am slightly nearsighted, though.

Screen is very pixelated!!!

Wow, just got my Vibrant this morning and was expecting to really be blown away by this screen, so far I am not impressed. My HD2 screen was far better than this. Everything is just VERY pixelated. Is this normal???
Well if you think the HD2 looks better id say no, something might be wrong.
The diffrence from LCD and OLED is night and day
You have a decent camera? If so take a pic with a so we can see

Hmm... What is your comparison, save for the HD2?
What images/graphics/etc are you using for your tests?
1quickturbosix, you are right the AMOLED screen on the Vibrant is not as sharp as an LCD screen of the same resolution, this is due to the pentile matrix arrangement of the sub pixels that Samsung uses on their AMOLED displays. However the AMOLED screen on the Vibrant does beat the pants off of LCD when it comes to contrast, black level, motion resolution, and color saturation. I had an HD2 before the Vibrant and the effective resolution difference was obvious, especially with small text, but I've gotten used to it.
There was a really good article explaining the differences between LCD and AMOLED displays posted here a while back, I'll post it if I can find it.
I also want to mention that the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones have the best touch sensitivty out there, even better than the mighty iPhone4, due to the fact that the SAMOLED screen incorporates the digitizer where on LCD screes it would be two separate pieces.

In general the AMOLED screens don't render text as well as LCDs, but images are better. I do notice pixellation in text when zoomed way out, but I generally try not to read tiny text.

true true. good thing having better images far outweigh trying to read anything at 5pt font.

Grainy screen?

I see light vertical lines on the screen. They are more visible on a white background. I dont have to hold it too close to my face to notice it, i can see them even at distance of 10 inches or so. I went to bestbuy, and noticed that their display model had the same issue.
I have playbooks and touchpad in the house and i dont notice this behavior on those tablets, even if i look really closely. So its not a matter of screen resolution. It seems to be some defect with the screen. Maybe because its not a LED or IPS display?
I talked to Acer customer support, they told me to send it in for repair. I asked, whether i will get a replacement or not. He said they dont offer refunds or replacements under standard warranty? I dont want to send in my tablet and pay for shipping, only to have them reinstall the OS and send it back. So should i even bother?
I searched on different sites and forums ,and no one seemed to have mentioned this issue. But on Engadget review, they state "Pixels visible with naked eye" as one of the negatives, and the tablet i saw at bestbuy had the similar issue, so it can not just be me only. Maybe people dont really care to notice it? You will notice it more when you tilt up the tablet a little.
unfortunately, it's a "feature" of this tab. I knew ahead of time before I bought my tab because of a review but didn't think I would notice.
I only notice it now with the screen off or outside.

How do u notice it with screen off?? I am not talking about the "dots" on the screen which can be seen with screen off. These are very light vertical lines placed VERY close to each other. Maybe they are just pixels, but why are they so visible? My macbook pro 13" looks better and it has same resolution

do not compare laptop with tablet. i'm sure all of a500 have same issue.
if u don't like its screen u should sell it and buy another tablet.
^ Not true. Neither my A500 or A101 suffer from these vertical lines the OP describes.
Lots of times eexplain a issue diffrently then others..
If what you are seeing is consistent. if its a kinda exact set of dots and lines in a grid on the device.. this is the DIGITIZER .. this can be seen easly on the a500. all devices have it but for some reason the grid is some type of reflective material instead of dull . this makes it easy to see on the iconia..
This is a very common complaint about the a500 tablet... to know if its this for sure go out in the bright sun .. tilt your screen around and it will come into very clear view...
good luck and i do hope this is what you are seeing. if not sending it back might be the only option . if your not under warranty you can try opening the case and check the display connectors.
He explicitly said it wasn't the digitizer, or "dots" as he put it.
same here

Its expecially noticible on white background or light colours like this xda forum web page. Don't look close to the screen, its hard to see it like that, but just looking at the screen normally, I can see full of pixels..not a HUGE problem, but its a little bit annoying..

Thanks for the input everyone
I do believe you're seeing the red subpixels of the LCD. While they are extremely tiny, they seem to be slightly more noticeable than the blue and green, especially on a white screen. These are the only vertical lines I can think of besides the obvious digitizer lines you see when the screen is off under sunlight. Yea upon looking very closely, they seems to be the pixels. Maybe they are more visible on this tablet because its just an LCD display as opposed to IPS as found on other tablets. Like i said, i noticed same thing on bestbuy display model as well.
With apologies to Arthur C. Clarke:
My god, it's full of pixels...
My mind is blown... people are seriously able to detect individual pixels when there are almost 150 per inch on this screen. I'm not sure I could see 150 individual anythings in one inch.

There is NOTHING "wrong" with it, it's just the way it's been designed. Whether you like that or not doesn't have a damn thing to do with that. It's not "wrong".

Well, then its not well designed. That's what i wanted to say. People shouldn't be able to see full of pixels on this 720p pixel resolution on a 10.1 inch screen. Compare with other tablets; they may have pixels in texts, but not in any light background.
I can only see the subpixels with my nose to it on a bright white screen. At 149 ppi, this is pretty normal.

Screen viewing angle: really that bad?

Am I the only one not complaining about the Nexus 4 viewing angle? I mean, I have tried my best, but the screen really looks the same to me from any possible viewing angle...
Tell me your opinion :good:
It changes colour at off angles for me. It's definitely not great but I totally don't care. It's a phone, personal communications to me and I never look at it from an off angle. It's so much more important in a laptop or even a tablet.

The viewing angle is fine, what bothers me is that the Digitizer is detected quite easily, and it might be distracting sometimes.

I wouldn't care either, the fact is that I don't notice color changing

top to bottom is ok but viewing in side angles from left to right turns into a different shade (blueish). and also in sunlight the Digitizer is detected.. annoying sometimes.
i wish google chose hardware more carefully next time (i know the phones only $350)but still. ..

The digitizer is clearly visible if the screen is off, and I see no reason for it to be annoying. Again, I see no blueish when looking the screen from left or right

I haven't even seen a complaint. I have noticed that looking at from a very sharp angle makes the colors darker, like an old projection TV, but I also wonder who looks at their phone on such a stupid angle.
People just like to whine about every little thing. They whined about the SIM tray rattling and it's almost impossible to hear. They whined about the speaker on the back emitting a slight buzz that can only be heard if you basically hold the phone in your ear.

I can see it a little on mine (Rev 10 211k), but I don't mind it. Gets slightly blue... I'm not complaining, esp. when compared to my Tablet S. Sony seems to have terrible viewing angles, although the Tablet Z is better. Still, are you guys really looking at your screens at odd angles with regular use? Your doing it wrong if you are.
It isn't bad at all, its just loopy ocd people complaining that they can't look at their screen from an 85* angle. Why they would want to? I have no idea.

A question for a new LCD Display

Hi everybody.
I just broke my phone yesterday and I am looking for some nice quality brand new LCD Display for Essential.
Is anyone here with a screen that has already been changed? I want to know does the new screen provide the same resolution size like is normal for our Display ( I mean 1312x2560ppi) or it is less?
CPU-Z is a good program to see that.
Thanks.

Frankly, no idea, but I think yes... I don't see a lot of prints/smudges on the screen, it stays very clean. Feels very smooth to the touch - better feeling than the screen on my SGS7.
Also don't know if it's real Gorilla Glass (ppl on Amazon were asking). So far, not a single scratch.

Looks like it is oleophobic... The water drop doesn't spread on the glass, and when I tilt the phone and shake it a bit, the drop rolls on the screen intact, without leaving a trail.
