Screen viewing angle: really that bad? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Am I the only one not complaining about the Nexus 4 viewing angle? I mean, I have tried my best, but the screen really looks the same to me from any possible viewing angle...
Tell me your opinion :good:

It changes colour at off angles for me. It's definitely not great but I totally don't care. It's a phone, personal communications to me and I never look at it from an off angle. It's so much more important in a laptop or even a tablet.

The viewing angle is fine, what bothers me is that the Digitizer is detected quite easily, and it might be distracting sometimes.

I wouldn't care either, the fact is that I don't notice color changing
Is something wrong with my eyes/screen?

top to bottom is ok but viewing in side angles from left to right turns into a different shade (blueish). and also in sunlight the Digitizer is detected.. annoying sometimes.
i wish google chose hardware more carefully next time (i know the phones only $350)but still. ..

The digitizer is clearly visible if the screen is off, and I see no reason for it to be annoying. Again, I see no blueish when looking the screen from left or right

I haven't even seen a complaint. I have noticed that looking at from a very sharp angle makes the colors darker, like an old projection TV, but I also wonder who looks at their phone on such a stupid angle.
People just like to whine about every little thing. They whined about the SIM tray rattling and it's almost impossible to hear. They whined about the speaker on the back emitting a slight buzz that can only be heard if you basically hold the phone in your ear.

I can see it a little on mine (Rev 10 211k), but I don't mind it. Gets slightly blue... I'm not complaining, esp. when compared to my Tablet S. Sony seems to have terrible viewing angles, although the Tablet Z is better. Still, are you guys really looking at your screens at odd angles with regular use? Your doing it wrong if you are.

It isn't bad at all, its just loopy ocd people complaining that they can't look at their screen from an 85* angle. Why they would want to? I have no idea.

HTC One Sharp panel digitiser issue

As we all know HTC One cam with 3 types of screen
those are JDİ c_1, JDİ c_2 ans Sharp panel
it was kind of wierd that all new phones have in cell touch technology where touch sensor integrated in screen, advantages with that slimmer phone, brighter screen and less reflection.
HTC chose old fasion but issue with that especially on sharp panel digitiser visible and its whe you notice annoys you.
What am I supposed to be noticing here?
I think he's talking about those lines. Personally, i consider that a viewing angle issue.
As someone who returned his phone twice for aesthetic reasons, this one would not bother me.

If it is those lines, then it isn't a Sharp panel issue in particular, mine doesn't have this. Just checked.

You need to angle it correctly with sunlight(only) to be able to see it. It won't show up on artificial lights.

Thanks. Just tried this and it was INCREDIBLY hard to see the lines, but they were there. I couldn't even make out the screen anymore since I had to put it directly in the sun in a retarded angle. Would not have noticed this in a million years. Maybe it's worse on some screens, on mine it's a non issue
No lines with JDI_C2 panel

This is a pointless thread adding negativity to a phone with probably the best screen in the market. I had both JDI and Sharp. It is visible in both, maybe Sharp a little more but i have already mentioned the benefits of this panel.

For those having the issue, are these lines only visible when outdoors in bright light and holding the phone at an unusually sharp angle? Can you see the lines when viewing the phone from a normal angle? You can see where I'm going with this.

I'm not pretty sure though... Mine is a samsung JDI screen and I can see the lines when phone is facing direct sunlight and looking in a 120 degree angle Anyways I don't use my phone like that and it's not a bother to me. Honestly I just noticed it 3 times since getting the phone.
You can see the lines clearly in the sunlight. Like you normally hold your phone, they go away if you angle it more towards yourself. They are a huge flaw. I have never seen any phone have this crap
I have owned
S2, s3, optimus g, Xperia s, HTC one x, lumia620
I can only see them when the screen is turned off, and holding the phone in a way no one uses their phone... And then it is barely noticeable. The One X had this as well.
My biggest issue, however, is that when I hold the phone at a certain angle and focus my eyes differently, I can see my reflection. I hope warranty covers the reflection issue :crying:

I too noticed lines and also noticed a small purple burn in image on my screen. My phone is less than a Month old and I have had plenty of high end phones that do not share the HTC ONEs screen problems that I have experienced thus far. The phone is great, and I do not feel people should be scared of other people who make sharp comments negating their honest views. I hate closed minds. I applaud everyone who expresses their individual problems with a device they paid top dollar for. Just because we highlight certain areas of a phone does not mean we are not credible in our complaints.

I second this flaw. Don't let people tell you this is natural. Neither my iPhone or Galaxy S4 has showed these lines and if they did I would comment. I can also see mine at a correct viewing angle in outside sunlight. I should note I love my HTC ONe. I share no brand "fan boy" feelings.

The benefits (since you asked):
1. Best brightness value
2. Best viewing angles
3. Most accurate color display/calibration
4. Highest pixel density (marginal, I know, but the numbers are what they are)
5. Most natural white temperature
All of these confirmed through various reviews/comparisons of current android phones. I can also personally attest to these through my own comparisons with numerous phones side by side. This does not include iphone 5 which is better still in most of these categories.
So the point made (and a very valid point I would say) was that if we have to deal with this insignificant "problem" to have a better display in most other senses, for me that's a no-brainer. No one in these threads seems to accept that yes, it's normal for this phone. Maybe that's not ideal for some for whatever reason and that's totally fair, lucky them there's other excellent phones to choose from. Everyone has their own priorities

Thank you but Galaxy S4 and phone 5 has integrated touch sensors. saying that i have my one x its not visible its issue comes with certain types

Blueish screen when looked diagonally

I just got the white AT&T G2. When i look at the screen diagonally(when the phone is flat) screen looks bluish. Looks good horizontally and vertically though. Does it happen to everyone ? Is it a software issue ?
Blueish sceen when looked diagonally
Clear screen when looked horizontally
Although images are blurry you can clearly see the blue in the first image.
yeah, the viewing angles aren't good on this thing at all. idk why some reviews praised them.. my droid dna is clear at every single angle and doesn't color shift at all.

Lol, that is true but you expect a perfect phone right. My HTC One looks great no matter what angle. It didn't take too long for me figure this out. Also i am not too fussy about detail so to speak. Yet i find it annoying because lately products are coming with so much quality check up and perfection and have made an average perfectionist like me look for finer details.
Viewing angles are not so good blueish in some angles and warm in other. But overall a very good and thoughtful device.
I know exactly what you're talking about. Not a software issue. I also have a G Pro and the blue tint when viewed from a diagonal angle is far worse than on the G2. On the G Pro, some dark images even look like negatives when viewed from those angles. Optimus G has this problem too.

Viewing Angles

Hello
I Received my 6p and Iove everything except the viewing angles. when I view whites at any angle other than straight on it has a blue tint.
Is this normal and is anyone else experiencing this?
Any other display issues I should look for?

It is not normal to view the screen the way you do. Yeah look for any kinds of defects and let us know. Or search may be.
Almost all AMOLED screens have this color shift. I had it on my Lumia Icon/930 and now on the Nexus 6P.
Yes unfortunately it seems to be normal. It happens on mine as well. I RMA'd one unit because it was bothering me so much. The replacement isn't much better and probably wasn't worth the trouble of resetting up my phone. But if you search the Internet about this issue it varies screen to screen and there are apparently some that don't do this except for at extreme angles. I wasn't lucky twice and I'm not about to try a 3rd time.. I'll just hopefully get used to it. This is literally the only thing that bothers me about this phone. I absolutely love it otherwise.
It is weird I don't remember noticing this when I had a Galaxy S3 back a few years ago though...
It's pretty distracting especially when posting on forums which the majority use a white theme. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't color shift so easily. It literally changed colors the entire time I wrote this because of the slight angle changes my fingers caused while typing

Ugh... I wish there was a place to see other 6pp in person to compare. I've seen my friends S6 and his screen only shifts at extreme angles.
Maybe I'm being too picky. I wish there was a store where I could compare another 6p in person.

If you are noticing it that much then you probably have a defective panel. Mine doesn't do this, in fact I think the panel is a thing of beauty. Sure next to my calibrated Z3 and iPhone 6 Plus, the hue is off white the whole time, even straight on. Move the other two phones aside and you don't notice it at all! Bring the other two in and suddenly, in the Fallout trailer, I can see more vibrant colors, crisper details and a larger picture with better sound than both. I reckon your's is a defective unit since just typing is showing color shifts that are glaringly annoying you.

Need an opinion really fast! Is my nexus 6P display defective?

Hello guys...I think my nexus 6P has pretty bad viweing angles. It is exactly...and I mean exactly like in this video.
http ://youtu.be/XhEC4dE5XHg
Is it normal for amoled screens? Is yours the same? What should I do? I love this phone...but this is concerning me. I am waiting for your answers as I do not know if I should Return this one and ask for a new one.
Update 1: do you think a tempered glass protector will make a difference? I am about to apply one but if my unit is defective Ivwill wait until I exchange it
The viewing angles for me are crap. If I tilt it upwards the screen goes completely pink/purple. Left and right give a rainbow tint. I don't notice it 95% of the time though

Do you think this is like a common thing? Or are we unlucky and most of the screens are better? It also pisses me off a little...otherwise i love the phone...but idk if I should ask for a replacement or not. I might also get a screen with a worst effect so that is why I am scard.
I think all screens are the same. Samsung kept the 100% ones and gave Huawei the 2. choice samples. If you use a higher brightness, it´s not really that bad. I´ve seen worse screens eg. in a Samsung Galaxy SIII where you could spot the glue marks..

Funny enough i am coming from an s3 and had no problems with the screen on that one. I had to choose between the 6P and the s6 edge plus....and i chose the 6P cuz I saw that the edge plus had a really loose home button and I didn't want that. I still want the 6P more...i just really fell in love with it...but I do not know if I should try and rma it...
Is your also the same?
It's very common. There are several threads on here about it, lots of people affected and some having to return their phones 4 or 5 times to get one they are reasonable happy with.
Mine was really bad especially at angles. I returned for a refund. I couldn't be bothered to return it multiple times. Also I was annoyed that Google was ignoring my emails about it.

I really do not know what to do...also...if I should try another 6P or not...I am kinda afraid cuz at over 60% brighteness...my whites are actually whites instead of the pinkish whites i saw on this forum...at 100% even with adaptive they look really good. I am afraid I will get a unit with really bad uneven screen. I will try and post some pictures in a bit
It's frustrating. Like you I had an s3 and the screen on that was great. It didn't have bad whites or bad viewing angles and that was years ago

You might get used to the screen, don´t worry The Nexus 5 ( 2013 ) had a different type of screen where you could see the digitizer matrix if you looked close enough I´m happy with my Nexus 6p though it´s slightly warped now. The phone is great but not very sturdy from a mechanical point of view.

I will post shortly some photos of the screen. Please let me know what you think
Okay....so here are my photos
It's an amoled. I've 4 s6. 2 10.5 tab s . 8.4 tab s and now a 9.7 tab s2 and there all the same. So it's not a defect . It's only wrong if it has a very noticeable hue or is uneven in colour. if it's even and has nice whites don't risk it
It's a shame because I love this damn device besides the crappy screen angles. Any slight deviation from straight on give me a bluish hue. Sad because the colors are so vibrant. I have played a bit with the saturation settings in Franco's kernel, but the color temp doesn't go high enough to tame the warm whites as much as I want. Just got my phone this past Monday and am still on the fence about an RMA. I just got the phone running where I want on CATA with Franco.

Okay guys...this is my screen. The brighteness was at less than 50 and more than 70. Most of the shots were taken with adaptive brighteness on. The photos where the screen is really bright were taken with adaptive off and brighteness at around 90%
What do you think, should I try to replace it with a new one or do you think the screen is good enaugh? Would you keep it?

That's looks like a good screen to me. Very uniform. Keep it . I would be chuffed if mine was like that. I think we become obsessed when first coming from Lcd or Ips screens but our eyes adjust and we end up realising that we have a good amoled or not. that comparable to the whites on my Samsung S6. And it took me 4 s6 phones to get a screen this good
Thanks a lot for your reply! You made me smile a little and feel better about it . When you say "that comparable to the whites on my Samsung S6." you mean that you compared my screen to your s6 or? I also think the screen looks kinda okay...getting just a little pink when I change the viewing angle...and then green if I move it a bit more. That's why I am saying I think the viewing angles are the ones bothering me. my screen also gets kinda pink...but when I get the brightenes all the way down and I am in adaptive mode. does that also happen on yours?

Nexus 6P screen problem. Please give me some pieces of advice.

Hey guys!
I neead some pieces of advice really fast!
My nexus 6P seems to have really really bad viewing angles..basically even if i move it a little while i am typing, the keyboard color gets bluish.
Please watch this video (also please forgive the backround noise). This is my 6P. I know that the video is not of a very high quality (it was taken with my ipad 2) but you can still see the problem when i use the keyboard. It can also be seen when i try to reach the notification bar.
Here is the video:

Is yours doing the same? Is it normal? Should I ask for a replacement? I am really curious if your 6P is doing the the same.

Does it happen on yours as well? or on your devices with amoled sreen? I am really interested if you guys have the Nexus 6P. Also, isn't the angle when the colors shift appears too narrow?
I mean..for me it happens at the slightest angle. if I hold the phone with the keyboard open..and I shake it a bit i can see the color getting bluish..like..immediately.

I'd say mine looks and acts the same way yours does, it just doesn't bother me in my regular usage.
AMOLED screens generally have narrowing viewing angles than IPS LCD screens before you start seeing color shifts like that. It's the tradeoff -- along with off-color whites - that you get for having more vibrant colors/real blacks and the ability to activate only certain portions of the screen (not really explored on the 6p, but Active Display on Moto X is an example). AMOLED is considered better for videos etc because of the vibrancy/deeper blacks but LCD tends to be brighter/easier to read outdoors.
I don't consider one better than the other, just a matter of taste.
Did you come from a phone that didn't have an AMOLED display or a Samsung (anecdotal theories that the better panels get binned for them, not by me but in other threads I've read)?

I'm not saying it's "normal" but rather, it seems like the panels used on the 6P vary on this issue (color shift) quite a bit. I do not know if this would be considered a manufacturing defect but there have been other threads of people exchanging their phones with the same issue; they would be better equipped to advise you re: returning this particular phone.
One thing to note is that in a Reddit AMA the Nexus team confirmed that they were using the latest generation panel from Samsung, so I would expect the panels to be of the same quality as the same one in a Samsung phone.
If you are still within the return window it's up to you to exchange if it is really bothering you. Someone on Reddit was in a similar position here. Note the first reply and the two images linked angle #1 and angle #2, where one of the phones had a much more obvious shift in color when tilted.

I am 100% sure that the shop I bought it from will replace it for me if I ask for it. If i choose to exchange directly on their shop should they let me compare both of them and keep the one that is better?
