Hi everyone,
I'm starting this thread to show you guys that not all Nexus S AMOLEDS are the same. I purchased a Nexus S on launch day from one store, and my brother bought a nexus S from another best buy store. We were comparing each others phones, and mine turned out to be darker than his, specifically the whites. We compared our screens at full brightness, and we set the same backgrounds, and his was noticeably better looking. So I went and exchanged mine, the new one I got still suffered from having darker whites, but it was not as bad as the first one, so when we compared them again, his was still better. I took a few pictures of the new one i got compared with his (on right). It may not look like much, but if you look at it in person, it's very noticeable when they are next to each other. I think you guys should compare your nexus s with a display model at a store, or with someone else to see what I'm talking about. I think it's easiest to see what i'm talking about if you look at the search widget. Like I said the first one I had was worse, but I'm comparing the newly exchanged one (left) with my brothers (right).

I agree with you
It's like my mom says not everything can be 100% perfect
Yeah I know what you're speaking of. I started a thread here about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877497
I went through this when I bought dual monitors for my computer. It is nearly impossible to find two monitors exactly the same. You will not know the difference unless you keep comparing it to others.

lol thats true. it made me laugh lol
download a solid white wallpaper. set the brightness to the highest. if one of them is cool blue white then this is good screen. if its warm yellowish white, then its a bad screen.
also there is the issue with pinkish disaplay. download a solid gray wallpaper. set the brightness to the lowest, if the gray turns to pink a little. you have a defective screen no matter what others tell you. if it stays gray " like my old Samsung Galaxy S " then you have a perfect screen.
AND there is also the grid pattern matrix you can see on the lowest brightness on the same gray wallpaper. ALL of them are more visible on the Super Amoled screens, just try to get one that is not very noticable.
if you got all those 3 perfectly " with no dead pixels or stuck pixels. then your phone worth alot.
i sold my galaxy S USED more than i bought it NEW because of these effects when i mentioned them to the buyer and he saw with his own eyes the difference. plus it didnt have single scratch on the whole phone so it was like a brand new.

No one's nitpicking. It's a matter of what you're willing to settle for. I paid my 580.00 for a phone to display the colors correctly. I didn't pay that much for the display to change colors just because I lower the brightness.

ya, after i took pics, i realized they were not on the same page on the home screen.
This is a very common issue on the Galaxy S phones too. Different suppliers are used in the manufacturing process resulting in some screens with warmer color temps, and others with cooler ones. The Engadget review of the Nexus S specifically called out a warmer temp by the way.

Dumb question, but did you verify that the brightness levels in settings are set to the same values? Or at least compared the two phones when at the lowest and highest settings?

ya, i actually made sure they were both brightest, and when they are both on the lowest, you can tell one of them displays brighter whites. But the first one I had was worse than the one I have in the pictures on the left, it's hard to notice that you have a screen that does not produce nice whites, unless you see another nexus s that does a better job.
I actually like the ones on the left, the ones on the right crush the blacks, resulting in basically everything washed out, even if it "looks" better to you, it isn't from a calibrator prospective.
The Evo 4G had the same thing going on with its display. HTC used 2 different Manufacturers for the screen, One Novatec, One Was Epson. I believe the Novatec panel had darker colors (warmer?) resulting in more of a purplish color on blacks (what ll_l_x_l_ll calls pink for whatever reason) While the epson didnt have any purplish tone, but most say had a washed out look.
I would say though that on the nexus S, probably 99% of them are going to have a little purplish effect on the lowest brightness setting. If the OPs brothers phone has no purplish color, that would be the first i have seen. Ive seen many many demo units, several video reviews, and even the 2.3 rom ported to other galaxy S phones, and they all have the "purplish" display.
All my whites on my phone are really white, and blacks are really black.
Only be concerned if your screen looks like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882862
That would definatley warrant an exchange, because they are NOT supposed to look like that.
My Screen looks better than his I9000 though too, but that could be his camera too washing out the colors a bit

Yeah my camera isn't great, it was poor light but it was enough to show the difference.
My i9000 screen is pretty incredible, I'd be impressed if I saw one better.
Oddly though, you say that if it turns blue when the brightness is turned right up, it's a good screen - my Nexus S does that. But it's yellow when the brightness is low.
Personally I think I'm going to take your advice in another thread. I'm going to return this phone for a refund, enjoy using my i9000 for a while as it's now apparent that the screen is excellent (I never really had GPS issues either, so I'm pretty lucky), and go around stores when they have stock to find a screen that compares favourably against my i9000. I'm in a nice position that I can do a side-by-side comparison each time.

Why not load up Google site in the browser to do your comparison? That way its identical.
lol
So, I guess not many of you have ever messed around with the LCD monitor in front of you (if you have one).
Mine I can set to be a cool white or a warm white.
Here is the real problem... Your brother is smarter than you. You see, there is a difference maybe in the screens. But instead of him *****ing about it, he likely just said his was better. Thus leaving you with the **** screen.
The tables could have been turned if you would have said "HAHA your screen is broken, and mine is better" the second you found the screens were different. Then it would be him here all upset about the screen.
The things people ***** about on this form are just crazy. And no, I don't care about how much you spent on your phone. When you buy any product you should only have a expectation that it is usable, not perfect. And thats mostly because perfect is mostly opinion when it comes to things like this.
Also, this is a phone, not a pro display marked for having the most accurate color production.
What kills me most is the people who take phones back over and over for problems that only exist in their heads. All you are doing is raising the cost of phones and keeping them high for everybody else.
I've owned this tablet for over a week now and I really love the screen when viewed head on. The colours, contrast and brightness are great. However, I've seen a lot of reviews say that the viewing angles are good and that hasn't been my experience. If you're only talking about its horizontal or vertical vertical viewing angles individually it's not too bad (just a loss in brightness), but viewing the tablet diagonally results in blacks becoming a washed out mess.
It doesn't seem like a problem that would come up often, but the use cases for a tablet make it a fairly common occurrence. No one seems to have mentioned this so I was wondering what others thought. Does this not bother anyone else, or is this just standard for a 10" tablet?

Just noticed it. Don't view the screen diagonally. So not a concern
I suspect that Sony sacrificed the diagonal view angles for better horizontal and vertical ones. If you look *very* closely as the screen you'll see a bunch of diagonal lines — at least I see them on mine.
To answer your question, I've not seen this on any of the other 10 inch tablet screens I've beheld, but I have seen much poorer horizontal and vertical viewing angles
That said those diagonal lines do annoy me.

My tablet actually has really good viewing angles. The only thing is the black go a little lighter when viewing diagonally. This is pretty common on IPS panels, even my Dell monitors.

If I look extremely close at the screen (to the point of hurting my eyes) I can see very faint lines which do look just like pixels. It's only apparent on whites.

A little lighter? You must have a far better panel than me if the shift can reasonably be described as "little". On mine blacks become bright Grey. :-/
I didn't realise this was common to IPS panels, however at least I know it's not just me. I recently had a chance to play with a Galaxy Tab 2 and while it exhibited some of the same behavior it was nowhere near as bad as the XTZ.

Yeah it might be hit or miss. The blacks kind of go grey-ish, but definitely not a bright grey. And it's not really an IPS thing, but it is common enough on them. Also, I honestly don't think it's much of a problem or issue at all. It's only the blacks viewed diagonally and at a very skewed viewing angle that change a bit. At least at most common viewing angles it doesn't change at all for me and probably the biggest thing, there's no colour shift. Colour shift is probably the biggest annoyance about my Nexus 4, so I'm glad my XTZ has absolutely none of it.
Also, the GTab2 uses PLS instead of IPS. It's Samsung's similar tech to IPS, but it is different of course, so it may be better.
I've just compared this screen to the Xperia Tablet S, and whilst the viewing angles are the sane on both diagonally, the faint lines across the screen are not exhibited on the Tablet S.
are barely noticeable, in fact, I'm surprised you noticed them!
Are you sure it's not the individual pixels?
Am I the only one not complaining about the Nexus 4 viewing angle? I mean, I have tried my best, but the screen really looks the same to me from any possible viewing angle...
Tell me your opinion :good:
It changes colour at off angles for me. It's definitely not great but I totally don't care. It's a phone, personal communications to me and I never look at it from an off angle. It's so much more important in a laptop or even a tablet.

The viewing angle is fine, what bothers me is that the Digitizer is detected quite easily, and it might be distracting sometimes.

Is something wrong with my eyes/screen?
top to bottom is ok but viewing in side angles from left to right turns into a different shade (blueish). and also in sunlight the Digitizer is detected.. annoying sometimes.
i wish google chose hardware more carefully next time (i know the phones only $350)but still. ..

I haven't even seen a complaint. I have noticed that looking at from a very sharp angle makes the colors darker, like an old projection TV, but I also wonder who looks at their phone on such a stupid angle.
People just like to whine about every little thing. They whined about the SIM tray rattling and it's almost impossible to hear. They whined about the speaker on the back emitting a slight buzz that can only be heard if you basically hold the phone in your ear.

I can see it a little on mine (Rev 10 211k), but I don't mind it. Gets slightly blue... I'm not complaining, esp. when compared to my Tablet S. Sony seems to have terrible viewing angles, although the Tablet Z is better. Still, are you guys really looking at your screens at odd angles with regular use? Your doing it wrong if you are.
It isn't bad at all, its just loopy ocd people complaining that they can't look at their screen from an 85* angle. Why they would want to? I have no idea.
Hello
I Received my 6p and Iove everything except the viewing angles. when I view whites at any angle other than straight on it has a blue tint.
Is this normal and is anyone else experiencing this?
Any other display issues I should look for?

It is not normal to view the screen the way you do. Yeah look for any kinds of defects and let us know. Or search may be.
Almost all AMOLED screens have this color shift. I had it on my Lumia Icon/930 and now on the Nexus 6P.
Yes unfortunately it seems to be normal. It happens on mine as well. I RMA'd one unit because it was bothering me so much. The replacement isn't much better and probably wasn't worth the trouble of resetting up my phone. But if you search the Internet about this issue it varies screen to screen and there are apparently some that don't do this except for at extreme angles. I wasn't lucky twice and I'm not about to try a 3rd time.. I'll just hopefully get used to it. This is literally the only thing that bothers me about this phone. I absolutely love it otherwise.
It is weird I don't remember noticing this when I had a Galaxy S3 back a few years ago though...
It's pretty distracting especially when posting on forums which the majority use a white theme. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't color shift so easily. It literally changed colors the entire time I wrote this because of the slight angle changes my fingers caused while typing

If you are noticing it that much then you probably have a defective panel. Mine doesn't do this, in fact I think the panel is a thing of beauty. Sure next to my calibrated Z3 and iPhone 6 Plus, the hue is off white the whole time, even straight on. Move the other two phones aside and you don't notice it at all! Bring the other two in and suddenly, in the Fallout trailer, I can see more vibrant colors, crisper details and a larger picture with better sound than both. I reckon your's is a defective unit since just typing is showing color shifts that are glaringly annoying you.
hello, 2 days ago i bought a refurbished gs5, right out of the box i felt like there's something wrong with it..
when im looking at the screen (especially on a white background) i can see its yellow-greenish. when i tilt the phone forward and backwards (taking the bottom part of the phone closer to me/further away from me)
the colors are perfect, like my brother's lg g3. what is the deal? is the screen defective? is it normal for this type of screen? the s5's screen is brighter than the lg g3, just for the record.
when i watch youtube videos, everything is greenish, when i tilt it a little bit, it looks almost as good as my dell ultrasharp monitor.
thanks in advance..
No, it is not normal. I might as well return it and get another one. I bought a SH unit and it came with minor burn-in, but that's not as bad as the yellow-greenish tint you're mentioning. Does it happen in download mode too? Or in recovery, if it's rooted with custom recovery. If yes, time to swap it for another refurbished. If not, we'll see.

thank you for your reply!
the rom is stock. after using the phone a bit, i feel this tint is just normal. its not VERY yellow, but when im watching vids faces look a bit greenish. its not critical, but not very accurate. still, when the screen is dimmed, it has a lot more contrast and looks much better than the washed out lg g3's screen (when its dimmed).
look, it might be just the way the screen looks. compared to the lg g3, is has a lot more contrast, but when im looking at images, the lg looks identical to my dell monitor (im a photographer so its very important to me), are you sure the galaxy is supposed to be accurate? are the white supposed to look as the lg? on the g3 the whites are a bit red, on the galaxy they're a bit yellow-greenish, but when i look at photos i took, the galaxy looks too warm. when i tilt it a bit, the whites turn a bit blueish, but its still better and more accurate than the yellow it normally is. are you completely sure it isnt the general look of this particular screen?
just for the record, its still yellowish in download mode
sorry for the long comment, im just trying to figure out what to do.,
AMOLED is over-saturated because Samsung is Samsung. Check a custom kernel which will be able to let you tweak the colours. I recommend Boeffla Kernel, because it lets you modify: R G B value, saturation, Hue, Display value and Contrast. Play around with all of those settings if you want to fix it using software.

thank you my friend. just for clarification, when you view a white background at "cinema" mode (which is the most color accurate) are the whites yellowish? when viewing in "Standard" mode, the whites are pretty good, but colors are SO SATURATED. and again, thank you my friend!
To my eye, the colours look washed-out, but that is because I am used to the oversaturation of the AMOLED. And yes, the white is yellow-ish.

How can I put it, uh, the S5 seems to be fine. The G3 is more vibrant, to be honest, but there is nothing wrong with the S5 in my opinion. Again, this is through my eyes, which are very different (and slanted), because 1/2 Jap, the colours on the AMOLED are better than on the LCD. Do you have both phones at the same brightness, and the colours are set nearly the same? Because that can sometimes make the difference. the gs5 colors arent better, they're too warm :\.. in the photo the colors arent accurate, because the screens are too bright, but the lg g3 is identical to my dell monitor, the galaxy s5 is very warm and causes images to look almost orange. i shot the image of the gs5 and the lg g3 with my dslr, so it will look different than if you shot your gs5 with a phone camera. anyway, look at the image, tell me what you see at "standard" mode, tell me if the colors of the image look warm, and if looking at a bit of an angle changes the warmth of the colors to be colder (and much more accurate). thank you mate for the help.

I see what you did there. I loaded the image on my S5 and, to sum it up, at least on my phone, with my eyes, comparing it with my 17" Samsung Syncmaster monitor, the colours on my screen look the same as in the G3 in your picture. I have my screen on Adapt Display. And in cinema mode, the colours are ~1:1 when putting my S5 next to your G3 in the picture, so yeah, your S5's screen is miscalibrated i suppose.

Now with an actual example, i can confirm to you that on the white google background the screen gets colder when you tilt it like in the video. And it also has some green tinting on the bottom. Again, our eyes are different, and this is my retina, my phone and my brain.

true.. one last thing, i have stock 6.0.1, when i change the display mode to "cinema" from "standard", the colors are accurate, but the whites are yellowish, when i change it to "standard", the whites are white, but the colors are over saturated and unrealistic. do you experience the same thing?
when i change to "dynamic", colors and whites on the internet, photos, video and such, look amazing and almost identical to my dell, but in games it looks just like standard mode, over saturated and too bright. im frustrated!

In dynamic, it changes according to what android thinks its on screen, or rather said, what colour profiles Samsung defined for games, internet, pictures, movies and so on. Unfortunately, with the properties of OLED, cinema mode tends to have rubbish whites. That's because the panel is OLED and your DELL is LCD, no matter if its TN, VA or IPS. The difference in technology is the base of your "issue". I keep my S5 on Adapt Display and forget about colour accuracy because AMOLEDs are natively over-saturated.

yeah then i think my gs5 is perfectly "normal" lol. ill just keep it at adaptive, its the most accurate for photos. by the way, my friend's gs6 looks a lot better. in cinema mode the whites are actually white, and the colors are better than the s5. i guess samsung improved it over the s5. i only paid 220$ for the phone (its considered cheap in my country, prices are horrible here) and i have a one year warranty. ill just keep it, its better than the lg g3 in sunlight, and when i dim the galaxy to 40%, its brighter and nicer to look at than the lg g3 at 60%. weird. well, thank you for the help, i guess im done here haha
