Hi everyone, has anyone discovered which is the best most reliable way to unlock the new galaxy? I've been playing around with iris unlock and face recognition (since the fingerprint scanner accuracy looks pretty ****, with the case that I got at least) but I'm not sure which is better or even if one is better than the other. Sometimes they're both insanely fast but some other times they take a while

I use the iris scanner trick is when unlocking look into the area of the red light unlocks in a heartbeat.
Facial recognition is easy to fool with a picture so iris scanner all the way. I have registered by iris and fingerprints for all scenarios.
Might want to register the same finger more than once. Maybe that will help.

Well you are 100% correct thanks a lot for this insane trick! Tbh I don't care much about protection, I was just looking for the fastest one that would offer protection from friends and stuff like that (for instance if I lay the phone on the table and it gets picked up by someone) but you seem to have that down, thanks a lot!

No worries mate it's the simple things that help.
love the phone, hate the unlock, moving from my S6 this is a total nightmare, i'm actually considering sacking it off its so bad. Fingprint is a faff so thats out of the window, its also impossible which most non samsung cases as they are too thick. IRIS, total waste of time, works about 1 in 50 for me, too dependant on lighting conditions, this was never going to work though was it, just a gimmick.
So we are left with location unlocking and face recog, face recog seems to be ok but its far from secure.
Another issues ive found is that if you are using a non samsung flip case and are using an auto screen lock app that triggers when you close your case, and then opens the screen when you open your case.... face recog and location recog no longer works, you are left with pin only which is also a pain.
I guess the only way to do this would be to shell out on a genuine samsung case, so thats another £35.
Its a very pretty phone but its left me feeling underwhelmed due to these and a few other issues I wont bore people with, my S6 is still a better phone in some respects.
Maybe I'm weird, but I actually like the fingerprint sensor. Especially when taking the S8 out of my pocket.
I've set both the iris and face unlocks to activate when the screen turns on, which makes them super quick, but I've been using the face unlock more because my eyes hurt when I use the iris scanner. But maybe this is just in my head. Anyone else experiencing this? The iris scanner is better because it is more secure and works in any lighting...but I think my retinas are burning
Yeah I got use to the fingerprint position.. I use both pin and fingerprint.

It can happen with iris scanner since it's using infra red light. Samsung warn us when we setup the iris scanner. You should stop using it
I tried all methods to see what's the best for me.
There are 2 modes for face recognition. One is faster, the other one is more secure. With the second one, your phone can't be fooled with a picture, video or a selfie of you. But I don't really like it because it doesn't always works, depending on light, of your position, posture, etc...
I'm left-handed, so the fingerprint sensor is not ideally positioned. But depending on how I grab my phone, it can be convinient to use it.
I think the iris scanner is the best unlocking choice. It's the most secure way to unlock a phone in the world, it's fast, can't be fooled, it works as well in full sun as at night (it doesn't need light to work, infra-red).
So I use the iris scanner and fingerprint scanner daily

Hmm, I missed the setting to make the face unlock more secure. I need to check on that. Thanks for the tip.
Iris scanner works pretty good. I registered as indicated, in medium light room away from windows, and it works perfectly in same conditions. But outside in powerful daylight, I had problems (or I was squinting more than usual )
Fingerprint scanner works pretty fine, as well. At the beginning, I had problems, but then I realized that I registered 2 vertical fingerprints, and were recognized only with the phone in that position. Erased them and re-registered in the normal holding position (slanted as you naturally grab the phone). Now works very fast, 9 times out of 10 trials.
Face recognition is the lowest security feature (my wife didn't manage to open it, though )

I don't think that setting is there in all variants. Someone posted a a screenshot of where that toggle is located in settings and when I looked there I didn't have it. I have an S8 on AT&T running the OTA update that pushed out yesterday. (G950USQU1AQD9)
I'm getting used to the fingerprint but the iris scanner actually works the majority of the time which I didn't expect. I'm not sure I like the idea of them introducing it for mobile payments though.

Fingerprint. I just have the s8 face down so I do not have to hunt for scanner. Easy peasy.

What with MIUI making lock screens customizable, and the EVO gods somehow automatically knowing what every thread is about without reading them....
How cool, would a lock screen that looked like a "theatrical" biometric scanner, wherein the user need touch and hold where the "scanner" is for a few seconds for the phone to unlock.
Anyone else have any neat lock screen ideas?

A real fingerprint scanner lockscreen would be too freaky, speaking from a security standpoint. I'm sure the government will issue phones like that some time in the near-future, to safeguard us all from 'terrorism'.
Sent From My UN-Rooted Evo!
I don't think the OP was talking about a real fingerprint reader. The Evo's screen isn't capable of capturing that anyway. The idea of an unlock screen that looks like a fingerprint reader does sound kind of cool, although if it worked by just holding your finger in one spot while it "scans," it might be too easy to unlock it by mistake.

only works as a ''lockscreen'' if you use a replacement launcher like adw, LPP, etc and choose the launcher as a locked app.
works fairly well after several training photos are taken in all sorts of settings and light, but is just too slow for my tastes... although i am excited too see how much better it gets, as it could be a serious consideration after further development
that's awesome! Thanks for the link! Totally what I was thinking. Face recognition by the camera would be cool too, although my front face camera got spooky 6+ months ago, so I don't know if that would ever work...

This would be very cool. Just improve on the facial lock that comes with the camera and we be good to go.
Is there a way to develope a lockscreen that can only be unlocked by one person(owner) by means of facial recognition? (front facing cam) Or by thumb recognition (screen scanner?) This would make it super secure and you wouldnt have to hide your unlock pattern like most of the secure lockscreens we have avaliable nowadays. I know CM7 has a pretty nice one with the invisible dots I think, But Im not running that rom, Maybe that lockscreen can get ported?
Just a thought, Im sure this could be a huge success if perfected! Thoughts?

Please note that Finger print Security Scanner is for entertainment purposes and does not actually scan your fingerprint. This is a prank application to have fun with your friends.
Also, NOTE that pressing the home button will unlock the phone, this has been done intentionally to ensure that even if you have forgotten the Key to unlocking the phone you do not land up in trouble.

Just thought I'd put it out here... I'm all for safe and secure phone... I for one used the 3x3 pattern lock for the longest time. Untill one day I had a medical emergency and was unresponsive.... EMS crews tried to get into my phone to call someone to find out if i was allergic to anything... Needless to say they didn't get into my phone.
Lucky I was ok 5 min later.....
Moral of the story its nice to have a secure lock but can be problematic if a emergency arises.

Facial Recognition is iffy on CM9 Builds atm. The Epic's future life is now in the hands of getting it official to Cynanogenmod. Once it becomes official, CM9 would be what lies ahead, hopefully by then, our brother and sister Galaxy S phones will have Facial Recognition worked out and maybe we'll be able to fork that source over to the Epic.
Finger Scan won't ever work without the proper hardware. Even with costly proprietary software, it wouldn't be feasible. As for locks, I currently use a combination of the 10 lockmod and a pin number as my password. It seems to be the most effective method of keeping my phone safe. I can rest assured that nobody will guess my pin, whilst still having the ease of unlocking it with a few numbers.

1. The capacitive touch screens in our phones aren't designed to recognize fingerprints. Besides, finger print readers can be easily fooled by laser toner and a picture of your finger print, as MythBusters showed.
2. Face recognition can be fooled using a photo of you.
The face recognition is mostly a gimmick, it's not meant to be a security feature as much as a balance of ease-of-use / security. It offers some security while making it vastly easier to unlock your phone, not involving hands.
The most secure is a long password/code.

+1 to this! Biometrics are hard to get right. If they are too restrictive, you can't even unlock your own device. Some of the better systems involve long pins (8+, preferably 10+) and a number display board that randomizes each time. That keeps greasy fingerprints on the screen from disclosing anything and people will have a hard time guessing or watching you type your pin.

Who cares? If someone wants a secure phone, that is their agenda. Android is built as an open system so people can configure their phone how they see fit. Unfortunately there aren't many secure lockscreens that can't be fooled, other than the swipe pattern and pin key.

Well, how about this? Is it possible to have a lockscreen that reads only gestures? And you can make a gesture that unlocks the phone, seemingly endless possibilities for an unlock, but very simple, as it can be any gesture you please.
I'm not on the official OTA bc I'm on the NS4G, but am I the only person that can only get face lock to work 1/27th of the time? I have tried time after time to make better captures of my face and done the face lock improvement countless times, and I have no beard. I almost look retarded how still and perfect I sit with my phone at direct eye level with my face. Its really upsetting :\ I have tried multiple ROMs and the same result with all of them. I always get 'Sorry, don't recognize you' or 'Couldn't find a face' and it makes me wanna smash it, because this was my most anticipated and exciting feature of ICS. Any suggestions or is anyone in my boat?
Same here. Seems like the time taken for the camera to adjust to the light is too long for FaceUnlock to recognize a face. Sad really.
I have tried Face Unlock on Peter Alfonso's ROM and though not perfect it was surprisingly good. It would work 7 out of 10 times.

Try the app "visidon" its free off market and I was using it on gingerbread flawlessly way before ics came out.

I installed face unlock on my stock ICS and it only works from time to time. I think that if someone changed the recognition time (so that the camera has more time to adjust), it might work better. But then again, it sometimes fails to recognize me even in environments where light isn't a problem (i.e. outside).
I think that, with the Nexus S, face unlock is more of a hit & miss thing. Sometimes, for example it gets it right 18/20.
Works ok when
outside but inside good luck

+1 Visidon
Iv'e been using Visidon since before ICS and it works great.
Google was not including Face Unlock on the official releases of ICS for the Nexus S because the resolution of the front facing camera is not strong enough for Face Unlock to work satisfactorily in their eyes.
Having used it on a few different ROMs now, I'm tending to agree with them.
The stock ICS face unlock works fine for me. FYI, you have to make sure you take multiple training shots in different lighting conditions if you want it to be reliable.

When I first installed Pete Alfonso's ROM from a full wipe, I had Face Unlock. Then when I restored apps and data from Titanium, it's gone. I also have the Screen Lock options for None and Slide grayed out with "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage". Any idea what app or setting would cause that?

LOL the recognition time I think may be what screws me. The time is soooo long already on here, much longer and my arm would lose circulation. It is hard for me to hold the phone in the exact same position for very long. And thank you to the rest of you, I will try Visidon.
Hi.
Ever since I own the S7 Edge I'm facing a strange behavior with the fingerprint scanner.
I used all slots for fingerprints. Every slot for a separate finger.
Now the precision of the recognition is fine only for a few days, then I'm facing the same problem. An error-prone. With increased regularity I have try 2-3... times to unlock the device with my finger (most of the time I use the thumb).
After deleting and imputing the fingerprints again it works fine again for a few days. Till next time.
I already flashed another stock ROM for another reason but it didn't change the behavior.
Anyone facing the same problem?
Best. Misspelling. Ever.
Gotta agree, fingerprint lockscreen worked flawlessly first few days, but ever since I'm finding it more and more difficult to unlock the phone. Weird.

I'm already on the latest German multi-rom. As I said noticed the problem before flashing this ROM to my 935FD.
I installed Good Lock a few weeks ago but had several problems like the color settings eg. Maybe I'll give it a try

Hm. But it seems I'm not the only one. So maybe there will be a fix in further updates.
I read in another thread that the APD1 update really messed up fingerprint recognition accuracy. Could this be the issue ?

Nope.
This issue was already present on my device with Feb firware as i got it. But yes I read this, too.
Has always worked fine for me. The only time it has trouble is if my hands/fingers are dirty.
APD1 did not mess up mine (Rooted & Xposed 935FD Stock ROM) - works waaaaaayyyyy better than my S6E
I switched from the S5 to the S7 Edge (Exynos). I've always loved the fingerprint reader in the S5. There always seemed to be someone in the IT media complaining about how poor it was, but that just never seemed to be the case for me - custom rom or stock.
I have to admit that from day 1, I've struggled with the S7. With my S5, I had a fingerprint saved for my right hand thumb, right hand thumb while holding the phone with one hand, right forefinger and also left forefinger and thumb.
With my S7, I've had to use all of the slots for my thumb and although it improves a bit with the more fingerprints I've stored, I don't find it as successful as the S5.
I haven't done any testing with both devices side by side, but only a few times a day would the S5 give me problems. I feel with the S7 that it's lucky if I get in first time. Several times a day, I have to type the PIN backup.
I initially thought that it might be just getting used to the larger device. I'm not sure. I think I'll re-do all of mine and see if I can get a better recording.
I will say that when it works, it's a LOT faster than the S5, but I'm not that concerned. I'd rather have a reliable scan that takes a bit longer to unlock, than a fast unlock rarely recognises my prints!!!
FYI, this was true before the APD1 update and also now that I'm on that version.
After updating to APD1 I had problems with finger reader. Factory reset seems to solve my problem. Now its working much better with just one finger added, instead of 4.
Do any one have that situation? When playing the phone for 20 minutes like watch YouTube ,news it getting warm up. Even I got case on it you still can feel. But my previous 6t doesn't have that issue. Also finger print unlock sucks compare to one plus 6t. 6t more fast than my s10 plus. Considering return it keep my 6t

The fp works perfectly if you learn how to set it up, It's not some optical finger smash button that gets fooled by some stupid glue-copied fingerprint like on every other phone.

No, because their data hasn't been implemented correctly, Google's way of restoring app data is the dumbest ever seen.
Do a factory reset and set it up as new device, download each app independently .
