"Fingerprint" screen unlock?! - EVO 4G General

What with MIUI making lock screens customizable, and the EVO gods somehow automatically knowing what every thread is about without reading them....
How cool, would a lock screen that looked like a "theatrical" biometric scanner, wherein the user need touch and hold where the "scanner" is for a few seconds for the phone to unlock.
Anyone else have any neat lock screen ideas?

Unlocked by your face captured on front camera.

Yea, but I don't think I can say those here.

Thats already been done on the iphone. In fact there is a few apps like that.

Pretty sure these already exist... maybe this one?

A real fingerprint scanner lockscreen would be too freaky, speaking from a security standpoint. I'm sure the government will issue phones like that some time in the near-future, to safeguard us all from 'terrorism'.
Sent From My UN-Rooted Evo!

I don't think the OP was talking about a real fingerprint reader. The Evo's screen isn't capable of capturing that anyway. The idea of an unlock screen that looks like a fingerprint reader does sound kind of cool, although if it worked by just holding your finger in one spot while it "scans," it might be too easy to unlock it by mistake.

Yeah I thats the one I thought of. That's like exactly what he's talking about. It pretends to read your fingerprint to unlock your phone. It's kinda cool, but loses its novelty.

only works as a ''lockscreen'' if you use a replacement launcher like adw, LPP, etc and choose the launcher as a locked app.
works fairly well after several training photos are taken in all sorts of settings and light, but is just too slow for my tastes... although i am excited too see how much better it gets, as it could be a serious consideration after further development

that's awesome! Thanks for the link! Totally what I was thinking. Face recognition by the camera would be cool too, although my front face camera got spooky 6+ months ago, so I don't know if that would ever work...

out of 10 times I only had to slid my finger twice once. The finger print reader scans much better now also. Battery life has gone up. Screen brightness has increased along with sharpness of pics. The pics I've transfered to my phone I took with my dslr looked washed out before. Now they look exactly like they should. Touch screen is more responsive now I think its a good and bad thing. I get more accidental selects now due to it.

Is the update still only available to beta testers?
From all the posts it makes it seem it is available for anyone though a check for updates does nothing for me.
Personally, I would caution everyone before updating. There are numerous issues behind the scenes that need to be worked out. Can not divulge details, but I would personally wait until it has been tested further.

I've never used blur on my phone. The first app I put on it as soon as it was opened was luncher pro so I can't say how blur acts now. Its not the camera that has improved its the display of the phone. I do believe it can be done by software by adjusting the phones display (I.E. changing gama and other little behind the scenes things to make colors stand out more)
From what I know the update should be pushed out today. It does take some time and I thought my phone froze up while updating but it just takes time after the phones its first reboot so be patient. As far as brightness goes having it turned down as low as it can get its still brighter then it was before at 20-30%. I use to keep the phone at about 15-20% and now with it turned down as much as I can get it, it is still brighter then before.

Is there a time frame I should be worried about here? Im rooted, have the webtop hack, and the adeo rom. Do I need to put all this back to stock before a certain time or ill miss out on the update?
The only thing I would be sacrificing is root. I am new to android, in your guys experience, how long does it take for updates to get rooted after they are released. I just don't think I want to give up root yet because I enjoy freezing all this CRAP that moto put on the phone.

If you're not up to date and you do a system update check, if there is any new updates, it should finded it. But as far as I know, the updates will be there if your phone is not up to date...
Rooting an update depends on the dev community backing the phone has, i.e. Droid X, which I had, updates were basically rooted within a day or so, look at the DX with the just released GB, it has a method for rooting already... and this phone doesn't look like it has as much dev backing, so it can take a while..
If you've done mods to your phone, and you try to update and it fails, it's most likey the mods are the ones stoping the updates, as it does checks on certain system files that need to match..
The update sounds great but I think ill wait for everyone to experiment with it first, then when the root comes out ill make the jump. Sounds like a lot of things that bothered me are fixed though. Too bad I can't grab it yet
I honestly probably would, im just scared as hell to try and remove these Adeo nods. The process looks involved. And I think I even read something that said wifi could break? Scary stuff

[req] super secure lockscreen?!

Is there a way to develope a lockscreen that can only be unlocked by one person(owner) by means of facial recognition? (front facing cam) Or by thumb recognition (screen scanner?) This would make it super secure and you wouldnt have to hide your unlock pattern like most of the secure lockscreens we have avaliable nowadays. I know CM7 has a pretty nice one with the invisible dots I think, But Im not running that rom, Maybe that lockscreen can get ported?
Just a thought, Im sure this could be a huge success if perfected! Thoughts?

Please note that Finger print Security Scanner is for entertainment purposes and does not actually scan your fingerprint. This is a prank application to have fun with your friends.
Also, NOTE that pressing the home button will unlock the phone, this has been done intentionally to ensure that even if you have forgotten the Key to unlocking the phone you do not land up in trouble.

Just thought I'd put it out here... I'm all for safe and secure phone... I for one used the 3x3 pattern lock for the longest time. Untill one day I had a medical emergency and was unresponsive.... EMS crews tried to get into my phone to call someone to find out if i was allergic to anything... Needless to say they didn't get into my phone.
Lucky I was ok 5 min later.....
Moral of the story its nice to have a secure lock but can be problematic if a emergency arises.

Facial Recognition is iffy on CM9 Builds atm. The Epic's future life is now in the hands of getting it official to Cynanogenmod. Once it becomes official, CM9 would be what lies ahead, hopefully by then, our brother and sister Galaxy S phones will have Facial Recognition worked out and maybe we'll be able to fork that source over to the Epic.
Finger Scan won't ever work without the proper hardware. Even with costly proprietary software, it wouldn't be feasible. As for locks, I currently use a combination of the 10 lockmod and a pin number as my password. It seems to be the most effective method of keeping my phone safe. I can rest assured that nobody will guess my pin, whilst still having the ease of unlocking it with a few numbers.

1. The capacitive touch screens in our phones aren't designed to recognize fingerprints. Besides, finger print readers can be easily fooled by laser toner and a picture of your finger print, as MythBusters showed.
2. Face recognition can be fooled using a photo of you.
The face recognition is mostly a gimmick, it's not meant to be a security feature as much as a balance of ease-of-use / security. It offers some security while making it vastly easier to unlock your phone, not involving hands.
The most secure is a long password/code.

+1 to this! Biometrics are hard to get right. If they are too restrictive, you can't even unlock your own device. Some of the better systems involve long pins (8+, preferably 10+) and a number display board that randomizes each time. That keeps greasy fingerprints on the screen from disclosing anything and people will have a hard time guessing or watching you type your pin.

Who cares? If someone wants a secure phone, that is their agenda. Android is built as an open system so people can configure their phone how they see fit. Unfortunately there aren't many secure lockscreens that can't be fooled, other than the swipe pattern and pin key.

Well, how about this? Is it possible to have a lockscreen that reads only gestures? And you can make a gesture that unlocks the phone, seemingly endless possibilities for an unlock, but very simple, as it can be any gesture you please.

Considering the front camera is still not working on any ICS build that I know of for the Evo4G, I wouldn't think it would be talked about much as one would definitely be important for the other.
This doesn't seem like it would be all that secure. Does it distinguish between your real face or a picture of your face that can be placed in front of the camera?
It scans and maps features on your face.
And to the OP, until the front camera is working in any ICS rom, we wont have it. It cant be ported to a Gingerbread rom.

Facial recognition is nice, but really easy to bypass. Japan tried facial recognition in cigarette vending machines to determine age, and kids just ended up holding up pictures of older people to bypass. Still works on the ICS facelock. Until they incorporate multi angle unlocks, it will be too easy to bypass for my liking.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Facial recognition will never be truly secure until the photo sensors can map in 3d to differentiate between a 2d and 3d image or until they incorporate a laser scanner that scans the 3d texture of a face along with the photo recognition
We are legion, for we are many.
Well, if you could get the software to recognize a partial sweep (as in turning your head from left to right), then that would be a bit more secure. Or at least have it take 3 screen captures (3/4 right, dead on, and 3/4 left) then it would be a bit more difficult to bypass.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Yeah its still being worked on by the devs, but it is really nothing more then a party gab, I wouldn't use it, the new ics face unlock could be defeated by a picture, so it really isnt secure...but yeah

Face unlock is a gimmick anyways..I have it on my phone, you usually end up having to type in your pin or pattern anyways, it is a negligible feature.
I should have factory reset before updating, that first reboot regenerating everything loaded (I guess) is taking a LONG time.

Wrong. I have it on my Galaxy Nexus and in 4.0.3 there's an option to improve face unlock. Just scan your face in different light, with/without glasses (if you have to wear) and in different angles (holding the phone in eye height, looking down on phone and so on) and face unlock works nearly everywhere except in total darkness. I took the time once and scanned about 30-40 situations, now face unlock works flawless.
I got it too, east coast DC area

I know this, but I have tried this, it still gives me 'no face found' or 'unable to recognize' failures often. Not to mention that it's just a major PITA to hold any device in a single position for it to recognize you (very unsafe while driving), and it takes a full 2-3 seconds longer to unlock than simply swiping in your pattern, which is the fallback if it doesn't recognize you anyway. I have not found a good use for it yet (presumably, wouldn't a photo of you work anyway? And isn't it easier for a criminal to get a picture of your face than to guess your pattern?)
Just saying, impractical gimmick. Fun to play with, but for anyone who uses their device often, they will get tired of looking at themselves while the device tries to recognize them..IMHO, FWIW
Is this true

How would you expect to line up the barcode without being able to look at the screen? I think scanning is out...
None of the scanning apps allow use of the front facing camera, so unless they decide to add support, they're not going to work.
and it's incredibly unlikely to be honest.
Unlikely I agree.
But think about the last time you bought groceries.
The scanner is like a big tablet, and you just pass the item in front of the camera.
I can see no technical reason why that model would not work.
oh i'm sure it would work with the front camera, but none of the apps support it as far as i know.
I'm sure you could request that the devs add support. up to them if they want to.
A high resolution, autofocus camera is needed to read most barcodes. The front camera might be able to handle QR codes.

I don't think it is stupid. It may well be technologically unlikely. But no harm in asking the question. And if someone did this I'd be delighted. Video calls. That appears to be the only real reason, for Skype and other VOIP systems. The resolution and fixed focus would bear that out, too. It's clearly not ment to be used as a regular camera, scanner, etc (though I'm sure someone will figure out how to do it...)
And that's fine with me, because the competition (Kindle Fire, Nook) don't have even that camera.

Hi, I'm an author of Barcode Scanner. It doesn't use the front camera since only rear cameras are treated as 'real' cameras by Android, and the API for using second cameras appeared later than the API leve the app supports (2.3), which makes it tricker.
We made a 'premium' version that does, among other things, support front-camera-only devices like the Nexus 7.

Sean,
Would it be possible to have the app scan a bar-code using a phone and send the information via Bluetooth to the tablet? That way we have the best of both worlds. I would certianly pay for "Plus" to get this option!
Just found this... was looking for a way to scan QR codes for shipping labels into the Nexus 7. Learnscan works good, just takes a bit getting used to lining it up as it is backwards and reversed from what you are used to.
Works good enough in a lit room. Scanning stuff off the screen is easier.
Can you just put the tablet down on the table, bring the product to the camera, and look at the screen to position the barcode?
It seems very doable.
you can... in fact that is what I end up doing, but it is much harder than you think it might be. the app changes the camera view by rotating it, so you are working against where you think you should be moving to have you end up seeing....
If you had anything to drink, forget about it...
You have to actually try it to see what I mean... its like driving backwards except the camera view you are looking at is rotated 90 degrees.
the app btw is free, or least the one I tried.
