Obviously, the Nexus 7 does not have a camera installed on its back side. Can anyone confirm if any barcode scanning apps would work? I know it would be awkward trying to scan a barcode with the front camera, but if anyone knows please reply!

How would you expect to line up the barcode without being able to look at the screen? I think scanning is out...
None of the scanning apps allow use of the front facing camera, so unless they decide to add support, they're not going to work.
and it's incredibly unlikely to be honest.
Unlikely I agree.
But think about the last time you bought groceries.
The scanner is like a big tablet, and you just pass the item in front of the camera.
I can see no technical reason why that model would not work.
oh i'm sure it would work with the front camera, but none of the apps support it as far as i know.
I'm sure you could request that the devs add support. up to them if they want to.
A high resolution, autofocus camera is needed to read most barcodes. The front camera might be able to handle QR codes.

I don't think it is stupid. It may well be technologically unlikely. But no harm in asking the question. And if someone did this I'd be delighted. It would mean I could do my home shopping grocery order much quicker by just standing in my kitchen. I accept however that it is a long shot (very long).

Video calls. That appears to be the only real reason, for Skype and other VOIP systems. The resolution and fixed focus would bear that out, too. It's clearly not ment to be used as a regular camera, scanner, etc (though I'm sure someone will figure out how to do it...)
And that's fine with me, because the competition (Kindle Fire, Nook) don't have even that camera.
Scanning apps
There are a couple of scanning apps now for the Nexus 7 such as LearnPad Scanner (I can't post links yet)
Learn pad does work with bar and qr codes. Just scanned my Pepsi bottle.

That is cool, sadly I can't get it to read any barcodes though. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Worked great for me for scanning in barcode for Google Authenticator.
Are you holding the tablet in the correct orientation (landscape with camera on left when looking at N7) ?

Yes I am. It must be me if it is working for everyone else. Or maybe UK barcodes don't work on it. It says it only does one type in its help pages.

Hi, I'm an author of Barcode Scanner. It doesn't use the front camera since only rear cameras are treated as 'real' cameras by Android, and the API for using second cameras appeared later than the API leve the app supports (2.3), which makes it tricker.
We made a 'premium' version that does, among other things, support front-camera-only devices like the Nexus 7.
Search for "barcode scanner plus" on Google Play -- sorry I can't posts links yet.

Sean,
Would it be possible to have the app scan a bar-code using a phone and send the information via Bluetooth to the tablet? That way we have the best of both worlds. I would certianly pay for "Plus" to get this option!
Just found this... was looking for a way to scan QR codes for shipping labels into the Nexus 7. Learnscan works good, just takes a bit getting used to lining it up as it is backwards and reversed from what you are used to.
Works good enough in a lit room. Scanning stuff off the screen is easier.
Can you just put the tablet down on the table, bring the product to the camera, and look at the screen to position the barcode?
It seems very doable.
you can... in fact that is what I end up doing, but it is much harder than you think it might be. the app changes the camera view by rotating it, so you are working against where you think you should be moving to have you end up seeing....
If you had anything to drink, forget about it...
You have to actually try it to see what I mean... its like driving backwards except the camera view you are looking at is rotated 90 degrees.
the app btw is free, or least the one I tried.

Hi folks, i am usin' O2 XDA Exec(Universal WM5), my network doesn't support Video Calls, so the front camera ain't of any damn use at all.
Can anyone expert here tell me, if there is any application(i really doubt), which can make it work as a normal front camera.
Or if someone of you can make such program
Complimentary beer from my side promised, lol
I wuz searchin' thru google and archives here, as well, not of much use.

Try AtekSoft's apps. You can use front facing camera as a web cam in Web Camera Plus. Do not know about Cool Camera program, but I think you should be able to use the front facing camera the same way as the main camera with it.

And you know what, while goin' thru forums, i just found out that the option to switch over to front camera feature is there in Universal, built-in already. When you click on Camera, there is a toggle button, for front camera(though the features of one built-in s**ks in comparison to cool camera).
I never paid heed to it, i thought that toggle button is to switch over to low-resolution mode or somethin' like that. Oh man, i feel like a total fool now hahaha

Sometimes we can not see things we have just under our noses, anyway I am glad you have it sorted out There is no such a switch on Hermes (Hermes has Macro switch instead) so I think I will give CoolCamera a go.

yeah pal, you should try it. The website says:
Restrictions of unregistered version:
Maximum video recording time and Interval Photo time is 5 seconds.
so for video, you gotta use the default application, but you can use this application for capturin' images, interval photo time of 5 seconds, would hardly matter for you, i think.
Enjoy..

Soon as you tag the face once, it should start recognising the face in future photos.

I just went through and tagged a bunch of pics on my SD card. None of them were taken with the phone. It didn't recognize all of them as faces but it did recognize most. It also auto tagged several after I manually tagged a few.
Ok mine don't autotag nothing...... BTW I have to shoot whit face detection on? And any way to let x10 autotag photo taken in the past? That feauture is not documented well
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
you use the face detection with the camera (on settings) then go to mediascape and there assign a face to a contact, after that every time you take a pic the face recognition system will assign a contact the the face and automatically saves it under the contact
Is there any way of retrospectively tagging photos which contain faces that you've later tagged. Ie. After I've tagged a face can I get it to go back and find any other photos of that person and tag them for me automatically? Doing it manually is a pain in the ass!!

Maybe it's a feature in the Japanese X10 (SO-01B) only, but, all my photos with recognized faces got tagged automagically, including photos that were sent to me via email or downloaded and saved from the web.
Really disturbing, to be honest, when some friend's faces were tagged before I had even opened the picture for the first time.

Yeah.. hence, I wrote "recognized". Then again, I've only tagged 6 or 7 people.
The annoying thing I find with the tag feature is... it can recognize every single person except me. :\
i love the face detection feature on the X10, works great for me, but ironically i would have loved to be able to tag someone even if there face wasn't recognized. I can't seem to do that with mediascape. Might there be a third party program that does that ?

Sorry, I meant that it worked on a ROM other than SO-01B. I am on the AT&T version which is R2CA016. I had been using unbranded version 026 and face detection worked on that version for me as well. Unfortunately, if you wipe your phone you will have start from scratch on face detection. It doesn't seem to sync that info anywhere. The AT&T version doesn't have SE Sync so I wonder if SE Sync retains that info?

"automagically"
Not a real word, but I love it...!
Let's get this one into the dictionary!
the face detection actually work with any photo. doesn't have to be photo taken by x10 with face detection on. so any picture with face will work. then once you tag on face, the phone will work on background, and tag other pictures. this is the one of the feature i love in x10.
then for newly taken picture with face, that one will be processed immediately and if successful will have the face tagged.
now the real problem is, the face detection code is not really good, i found Picasa face detection works much better. so don't expect all face will be recognize by the phone. I think 2.1 will have better recognition later.
some of experience with the face detection are:
1. 8mpix with face and torso taken with other camera, usually cannot be recognized
2. same picture as above, if scaled down to 800x800 might be recognized
3. low contrast picture might not be recognized
4. photo will full body taken usually failed, with a cropped mugshot will work even though the cropped mugshot have still have same resolution (not scaled)
so basically this whole face detection is still not perfect, but its better than nothing
one more thing, for those who use task killer, if you kill certain SE core module like LearningClient and FaceDetection, then the face detection will not run in background.
What with MIUI making lock screens customizable, and the EVO gods somehow automatically knowing what every thread is about without reading them....
How cool, would a lock screen that looked like a "theatrical" biometric scanner, wherein the user need touch and hold where the "scanner" is for a few seconds for the phone to unlock.
Anyone else have any neat lock screen ideas?

Thats already been done on the iphone. In fact there is a few apps like that.

A real fingerprint scanner lockscreen would be too freaky, speaking from a security standpoint. I'm sure the government will issue phones like that some time in the near-future, to safeguard us all from 'terrorism'.
Sent From My UN-Rooted Evo!
I don't think the OP was talking about a real fingerprint reader. The Evo's screen isn't capable of capturing that anyway. The idea of an unlock screen that looks like a fingerprint reader does sound kind of cool, although if it worked by just holding your finger in one spot while it "scans," it might be too easy to unlock it by mistake.

only works as a ''lockscreen'' if you use a replacement launcher like adw, LPP, etc and choose the launcher as a locked app.
works fairly well after several training photos are taken in all sorts of settings and light, but is just too slow for my tastes... although i am excited too see how much better it gets, as it could be a serious consideration after further development
that's awesome! Thanks for the link! Totally what I was thinking. Face recognition by the camera would be cool too, although my front face camera got spooky 6+ months ago, so I don't know if that would ever work...

Considering the front camera is still not working on any ICS build that I know of for the Evo4G, I wouldn't think it would be talked about much as one would definitely be important for the other.
This doesn't seem like it would be all that secure. Does it distinguish between your real face or a picture of your face that can be placed in front of the camera?
It scans and maps features on your face.
And to the OP, until the front camera is working in any ICS rom, we wont have it. It cant be ported to a Gingerbread rom.

Facial recognition is nice, but really easy to bypass. Japan tried facial recognition in cigarette vending machines to determine age, and kids just ended up holding up pictures of older people to bypass. Still works on the ICS facelock. Until they incorporate multi angle unlocks, it will be too easy to bypass for my liking.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Facial recognition will never be truly secure until the photo sensors can map in 3d to differentiate between a 2d and 3d image or until they incorporate a laser scanner that scans the 3d texture of a face along with the photo recognition
We are legion, for we are many.
Well, if you could get the software to recognize a partial sweep (as in turning your head from left to right), then that would be a bit more secure. Or at least have it take 3 screen captures (3/4 right, dead on, and 3/4 left) then it would be a bit more difficult to bypass.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Yeah its still being worked on by the devs, but it is really nothing more then a party gab, I wouldn't use it, the new ics face unlock could be defeated by a picture, so it really isnt secure...but yeah
