Anandtech and their Snapdragon 835 comparison - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys,
I just ended up reading Anandtech 's first look at the 835 processor. Its a work in progress as all they had were prototype 835s in the Qualcomm office but the results, to me, were surprising.
They had the Mate 9 listed in every chart, obviously because of the A73 and Kirin 960 being one of the latest processors.
Let me know if any of you are surprised by the results. And are you still happy with your Mate 9?
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11201/qualcomm-snapdragon-835-performance-preview

No surprise here. But not amazed by snapdragon at the moment. I'm really happy with Mate 9, no kidding. Performance, battery, design. Love everything on it. ?

I am not surprised about the SD835. I am disappointed with the Kirin960 and its power consumption either because 16nm FFC is not suitable for high-end SOCs or Huawei screwed up the design/implementation.
But I was suspicious about this when I was not getting the great battery life I should get of a 5'5" display with a 4000mAh ( i have the Pro ) and a supposed SOC more efficient than the Kirin 950 ( which turned out to be otherwise ).

I get tremendous battery life except when I... Play games. I mean, watching videos, 10-12 hours SOT. Mind you, I have 6GB/128GB version with "only" *1080p. I contemplated getting the pro, and I'm still watching one on swappa, but with a few exceptions here and there I live it. And I am surprised that it is right up there with the best of them. Thought the 835 and Adreno 540 would be miles ahead by now

The Adreno 540 is miles ahead of the GPU configuration of the Krin 960, it delivers more performance while the Kirin consumes more than twice the power.

Same here. Not counting fw B136 I've been able to hit 10+ hours SOT since day 1.

Wow. Thanks for pointing out the piece. Impressed with Mate 9 performance in top 2-4 and many at the top spot. I do get amazing battery life with heavy use. On the 835 seems like a very incremental update, though I'm sure it will be tweaked up for production.

Even though in a benchmarking environment the 835 beats the kirin 960,i just watched a YouTube video of the galaxy s8 vs the regular p10. And the p10 is faster. Benchmarks tell you nothing about the real world performance of a phone. I'm very happy about the speed and battery life of this device. And it will keep me happy until the mate 11 arrives

Benchmarks are indications of NOTHING, Mate 9 runs circles around any galaxy phone, even s8. take those two, load them with apps and see how faster Mate 9 is, in my opinion, it's currently the best phone.

Battery Life?

Given that loads of us have been burned by the poor battery lives of previous HTC phones, I can imagine many of us are waiting for news on the performance of this phone in this arena.
However, there are a few bright in regards to what the HTC Ones battery performance might be:
<[email protected]>
Snapdragon 600 / APQ8064Pro should be considerably better on battery than the Tegra 3, so yeah it should be way improved.
Click to collapse
Compared to the HTC Droid DNA which had superior battery life to the HTC One X due to using the S4 processor over the Tegra 3, the 28nm S600 should have perhaps even better performance.
It doesn't seem like the major reviewers have been given test units yet but I would be surprised if a few weren't floating out in the wild... Even with, what may not be the final release software, if you have the HTC One to hand, how has battery life been performing for you?
I'm looking forward to collecting all the battery life info on this beast before release as this may probably be the most important factor influencing whether or not I buy this device
And if you don't have a review unit, what type of battery life would you be looking for? On my current HTC One X, I could get 4-5 hours of continuous screen time usage with screen brightness at minimum, I'm hoping for about +7 hours.
Isnt it 28nm?
Smaller screen than the Droid DNA and a larger battery... the performance should be better...
But I expected the Xperia Z to perform better than it actually did.. Waiting for the initial reviews.

Surely, some one with a unit could give us a sneak peek on battery performance?

AW: Battery Life?
I would be highly interested as to the battery life compared to the One X+. Surely the smaller build of the One cpu should have an edge over the One X, but the display resolution of the One could
be the downside in terms of power consumption.
I don't know how this turns out, what to you think?

I've read that on Qualcomm's website
Has anyone read any updates on day to day battery life?
I think it is too early to tell as from what I read the phones which are on demo or reviewed don't have the final software so any sites stating about battery life will need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
according to a review the batterlife is :
Video: 6-8 hours.
Internet: 7 hours. 15 min.
Talk time: about 18 hours.
Standby mode (Wi-Fi enabled): 7 days
Standby: 12.5 days

Battery life
The results obtained by HTC One to be counted as the better ones. During our tests, the smartphone stand all day intensive work - video, pictures, filming, listening to music and performance testing. By extrapolation, we can say that the battery HTC One at a more moderate use of the smartphone's enough even for two days which was confirmed by a further two days of testing. Is that a lot? It is difficult to relate to us, as it is the first smartphone with Full HD screen, which we test, but compared with products equipped with HD screens, the result should be treated with respect.

Outdoor visibility (max brightness)

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the HTC U11+'s display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Interesting...

If the battery and display are as they say, the phone will be sent back lol.
This is disappointing and epic tragic result if that true to all htc u11 plus device when release.
I will return it immediately back to HTC.
I can’t imagine HTC made such epic fail flagships device ever.
Hope review unit of gsmarena was faulty.
And even battery life is completely disaster and totally unacceptable for almost 4000 battery capacity.
It’s lower than all device out there with 3000 it’s even worse than 2700 battery capacity of Sony XZ1.
Total unbelievable and frustrating.

GSM should have known it`s a defective unit& redo the test before posting the review. How come only they get subpar battery life results on U11+ while others report great battery life and a nice screen?
Personally, I think it`s important to get a review right the first time especially it is quite a reputable site.

All the other reviewers like those Android central not mention such issues with both battery life and screen quality.
Also all user here at XDA having the device are very pleased with overall quality and performance on the U11 plus.

Android central said that the battery life provided between 4 and 7 hours of screen on time which isn't very impressive.
4 to 7 hours SOT is very good battery life.
I imagine the 4 hours SOT is with LTE most of the case and high brightness level and 7 hours with most WiFi and lower brightness lever for example 40-50%
With my Galaxy S8 plus that’s the SOT I get so as I can see HTC has the same behavior and no problem.
Now I’m having one week now Huawei P10 and having 5 hours SOT per day mixed WiFi-LTE usage.
So judging from that the battery life for HTC is above average and on par with my previous S8 plus and current P10.

My point with that statement is that a key feature of the phone is a HUGE battery which comes at the cost of weight. Now if this extra 30g of unwanted weight isn't able to provide more battery life than say the LG v30 then it seems really quite bad.

Are you still using your h8Pro?

it's been more than a year since the phone's been released. while we didn't get to see a honor 9 Pro, there were many new phones released by Huawei and honor with similar specs and value.
are you guys still using your phone? or moved on to something else?
if you have moved on, do you miss anything from the h8Pro? and if you are still using, care to share what you like?
Yes!!
I purchased my Honor 8 Pro on 25th July 2017 and it's been over a year now and I am still using it.
The device is serving me exceptionally well. The Kirin 960 hasn't aged a bit for me. Performace is top notch just like day 1. I do not experience any lag or stutter in any app or in the UI. The battery life is also great. Providing me with a little over hours of screen on time, it would have been better but I lay PUBG a lot and it drains my battery quickly. Coming to PUBG, I play at the highest available settings right now that is HD, HDR isn't out for the Honor 8 Pro yet. Frame rate is on high and anti aliasing is on which all contribute to battery drain. I would have turned down all the settings which would have saved my battery but what's the use of having all that power under the hood if you aren't going to use it.
Yeah still inbuse and working perfectly. I still use it because there is no need to update, everything works smooth and battery is still great. Honor is also finally supporting their phones longer, which gives added incentive to buy a new Honor phone, when I feel like upgrading.
I purchased it recently (July 2018) so don't have an option to get another one for at least a year, sometimes I regret buying it as it doesn't have the kind of performance that other 2018 midranged phones have.
The phone was advertised too well saying that it is Odin of gaming and all but Snapdragon 660 phones perform better than Kirin960 powered H8P.
Camera isn't great anymore, honor has degraded the camera performance so that people will buy Honor 10 or Honor V10.
I am very disappointed with the phone which costs around 26000 INR.
I upgraded from OnePlus one to honor 8 pro on 10th July 2017. I wanted a 128GB phone with good camera, battery and dual SIM. So far not disappointed. I have installed lot of apps, using android auto etc. Got Pie update yesterday. I am not looking for an upgrade at least for another year.

Got updated to pie and using it even now. Not feeling the need to change to a newer device. Everything works as expected for me. I am extremely happy with it.

Positivity For the 990

Whilst I am NOT defending Samsung and believe there is much to be improved, I do have the Mi 10 Pro with the Snapdragon 865 for a reference point. The Mi 10 Pro as you will be aware runs at 90hz and for me and my observations battery life is comparable and I'm running the ultra at 120hz.
As for performance & heat issues I decided to play an hour of PubG on the Ultra and another hour on the Mi 10 and again maybe slightly more heat on the Exynos but nothing to worry me personally. I can't say I noticed a difference in Gameplay but didn't run side by side or done a FPS count, that aspect I guess the 865 would lead, but I didn't have any issues on the Ultra in terms of playability.
I do recommend Samsung take notice and use ARM architecture on the Exynos 1000, and hope that this will resolve the complaints.
Maybe I got lucky with my chip, but honestly I can't complain as I'm not experiencing the issues that seem to plauge others.
Just showing and sharing my experience whist not defending the 990 entirely......:good:

Me too i don't deffend Samsung. But it is cruical that customer don't have any issues.
Put in side fps variation in games or better score in antutu it just isn't necessery for regular customer. He will not notice it.
I played games, record 4k 60fp 8k videos absolutley everyting also played games on charger because i wanted to know it there is any issue with thermal throtling or anything else.
And for camera with every update is better as well as battery life.I'm satisfied with my S20 Ultra Exynosm Brutal camera btw and brutal zoom
This is mine opinion after almost month with my phone.
Edit:
Also i updated myself camera app from 10.0.02.7 to 10.0.03.4 and its superfast shuter and auto focus.Overall its much much better.

Yeah I get the argument between performance of the 865 vs 990 and same price point. All I am saying is that I have seen threads saying the Cameras are Garbage, they really aren't, but yes should be better (Autofocus) which has improved for me.
The phone heats up, well I play long sessions of PubG and haven't noticed anything erratic.
I'm not debating the 990, I would also prefer the 865, but I'm most certainly not experiencing ALL of the aforementioned complaints in regards to this SOC.

Guys with positive feedback about exynos, where do you live? I live in Saudi and currently it's the best weather we had this year, and room temperature is 24°and my phone get warm during casual tasks and heats up really bad and drop frames while gaming (all of this while I'm on Wi-Fi), when I turn LTE it is much worse and much warmer, when I turn 5G it stay up for few minutes then heat up then fall back to 4G (I have excellent 5G and 4G signal)

I'm so tired of people falsely claiming exynos is fine in gaming.
You can see a lot of video proofs on YouTube that exynos is trash for gaming and there's no way it can maintain 60fps in pubg mobile for extended playing sessions
If you can't tell the difference between stable 60fps and frequent drop to 40fps it's your problem, don't say it's fine.
At this point I really want someone show me a video proof of exynos running pubg mobile at 60fps for 1 hour. Then I can shut my fxxk up. But until now I see none.

Same. The pro max also reduces brightness by 50%
Tbh, the s series is not a gaming phone. Get a gaming phone for gaming.
There is more to life than gaming. There is no perfect phones out there. Each has its unique qualities.
Gaming phones don't take photo well.
To this date samsung phones, at least s and note series is a well balanced phone. Not the best on gaming, photos, ui.. But it's well balanced and do each rather well.
Not to mention the dual messenger and excellent audio it can reproduce.. If you have a decent headset. The adaptive sound is perfect when tuned using the headset of your choice and I have several.. And a profile set for each device. When i change i change the profile.

I am also in Saudi Arabia, the phone is not too bad on WiFi, but when I use LTE OMG , phone become like heater , I think Samsung has to do something for this heat.

When I was in saudi, yanbu, the phone is hot as heck probably due to the constant search for better network.
Was in mobifly or mobily or something like that.

S20+ Exynos vs Snapdragon battery life test

Seems that the efficiency difference isn't so big after all. Less than an hour. Not too bad for the exynos this year. Samsung is definitely improving the exynos with every update. Waiting for custom roms/kernels for my exynos S20U. Should further improve battery life/performance..
There are various speed tests clearly showing the exynos is slower in day to day usage compared to snapdragon.
And then this, the battery life it worse, too.
However you say this is good. I don't get it, why do you seem to be happy with exynos when it's slower AND having shorter battery life?
And no, Samsung is not doing better, this year the gap between exynos and snapdragon is larger than ever. Last year they were closer.

The gap isn't too big for speed test too. 8 seconds? Not bad. Thought the gap would be much bigger for both battery and speed test, but it's not. Custom roms/kernels will definitely improve things further for the exynos. Even he said you won't notice any difference between the two variants in day to day use.
The big problem on exy is when you get out of home from wifi to mobile data on a trip. That eats the battery!

At the end of the day no matter what anyone says snap and exy are same price so we should be getting equal performance but no way exynos users have been shafted from battery usage to performance and camera
