Only you can decide that. Look up the proposed features of the S5 and then see what the S4 offers and make a decision. I would wait until it is definitely known what the specs and features of the S5 will be because it's just speculation now. Also, do as much reading as possible. Just about any possible question about the S4 has been asked and answered, just use the search function to find those answers.
One more thing. If you wait for the S5, wait until the developers edition or GE edition is released. Maybe even get the International S5 version if it is proven to work with AT&T LTE (which it should). DO not get the carrier branded version unless locked bootloaders and bloat is what you are looking for. Also, look into the KNOX issues to see if it further cripples the phones ability to be customized. If it does, you will probably be better going with another brand. But, like I said, you need to read and decide for yourself. Good luck.
Personally I don't think it's worth the wait. As for the s4 it's a good phone but there are other great phones out at the moment. If I was in your shoes I would consider the nexus 5 HTC one and LG g2 as alternative options. There is the note 3 but that depends on if your willing to carry a 5.7 inch screen with you.
Also now that I've had the s4 for a while I honestly got bored with it. I was hoping 4.3 would breath life back into it but it's just about the same. As for safestrap it helped but shortly got bored with ROMs and went back to stock. For my next upgrade I'll try another brand.
interesting replys thanks for that seems like i got a bit of reading to
i was thinking of going for the s5 cause ive been more than happy with the s2 for the last 2 years and i would imagine the s5 when its released will be a full spec phone

The future of flashing custom Roms is getting harder with new phones coming out so keep that in mind, if you don't mind not flashing custom Roms than the s5 would be a great phone.

Stay far away from the official ATT S4, they locked this phone down so tight, no custom Recovery, no flashing fresh new ROM's. It totally sucks, and is a very disturbing trend from ATT. Even the new Note 3 got the shaft Development on the ATT Note 3 is NONEXISTENT.
Even though I do love my S4, great smartphone, but if you get an MF3, or MJ9 version, your screwed.
If you got the cash, and want an S4, get the Google Play Edition, or find an International S4 on eBay.
I sure hope ATT isn't going to continue this in the future, locking down all new phones, and killing development ?
At least the ATT HTC One is totally developer friendly, it can be rooted, recovery, and S-Off no problem.

I cannot wait! Currently using an up-to-date OTA S4 on Verizon, meaning I am stuck with bloated touchwiz . Can't wait to switch over to the Dev Edition Moto X. Once the new Eclipse update is released I shall start "ROM"ing.

Just moved to a moto x DE from a verizon droid maxx that was stuck on 4.4 unrooted. Honestly, i wanted the droid maxx DE, but it was out of stock and i had the money now.
Only have had it for a couple days, but im really liking the size of the device. was kinda hesitant coming from the maxx, but it feels so good im my hands. I find that im not streching to reach the notification shade, and that the phone isnt sticking out the top of my shirt pocket when im working.
Another vote for Stock + xposed = no need to ROM. Wanted the dev edition so that i can always root no matter what update they throw at us.

Awesome. Glad to hear the stock ROM is that good. Touchwiz left me with a bad taste in my mouth. What are the recommend "must haves" once I am rooted?

Xposed with the Gravity Box module at a minimum. The rest depends on your needs. I also have the Moto Tether module.
Another benefit of the Dev Edition is to more easily flash ROMs down the road, when Moto/Lenovo stops supporting the device and releasing updates. Right now I have no interest in going off stock, but 2 years from now, that may change if I am stuck on Android 4.5 or whatever and 5.x has been out for a year.

i ran a s3 for a year before switching over and i can agree i froze TW from the start and installed a diffrent launcher. but i am happy to say even the stock launcher on this phone is great.
here is some of the stuff i have done
root
xposed
titanium backup
freeze all apps i dont use
greenify
new launcher
battery state read just incase something is draining the battery
i get about 1day 4hr on a full charge.
Root
Xposed; Modules: Gravity Box, Youtube ad-away, moto tether, root cloak, preference injector
Root enabled file explorer, I use Solid Explorer
Thats what im using so far, just got my DE 2 days ago, so im still getting settled in.
I also plan on flashing the image to get rid of the unlocked bootloader warning message that shows prior to the boot animation, but thats not really a big deal to me
I had a Verizon S4 on MK2. I will never buy another samsung phone in my lifetime, unless they decide to get rid of touchwiz... HA, right. Right now, I currently have a VZW DE Moto X I picked up on Swappa for about 390. It took 2 days to get here, and it is great. I do not miss my S4 one little bit. I even have it up for sale on Swappa but I'm not trying to advertise so I won't go into further detail on that. I love the Moto X, but I'm worried to take it out of the house xD.
Another former touchwiz convert here ... Came from Verizon Note 3 (had Note 2 prior to it) and while I wasn't overly thrilled about TW, I didn't mind it on the Note series (my first devices with TW).
Loved my N2 in every way, but the N3 (for me) sucked as a phone - bad quality, dropped calls and constant data drops/in and out of 4G etc
Decided to take advantage of the Moto sales and grabbed a DE X ... Of course I was concerned about the significant size difference, but after a week or so with the x I was hooked! Sold N3 and haven't regretted it at all.
Also agree with others as far as ROM's go .. No need IMO. Get Xposed and Gravity Box and you're golden!

Well both my DE and Black/White Bumper have shipped. Inter-webs say they will be here Tuesday. I shall turn on the Moto X and see if it needs to update to 4.4 and then check it out to ensure I am safe to port my number over. My phone is through a corporate account and is a pain in the ass to switch lol.
I've had the captivate, S2, S3, and Note 3. I always flashed custom ROMs because I hated TW so much. I bought the GSM DE, and feel no need to flash any custom ROM. For the first time, I'm completely happy with stock. Now, a custom kernel is another thing all together. Lol

Another Verizon Samsung gs4 convert. I came from Sprint before complaining about the previous few generations of HTC evo phones and I had no idea how much worse Samsung had messed up the android experience (especially with the way Verizon locks down the phone). Whomever is responsible for the abomination that is touchwiz should be flogged.
I've got the vzw de x and so far haven't seen a reason to ROM it.
I know the phone won't be out until the 23rd (despite heavy argument from a certain bunch that still think the 17th is the release date for verizon based on what "their reps told them"). Looks like the S5 and the Note 3 on the latest builds have no root and require flashing an older kernel to root the phone. Seems like that trend is going to carry over to the Note 4 with the exception of us not having an older kernel to flash and root. So any talks within the community about a bounty or new root method being developed? Let's get the chatter going early so we don't have to wait 3-6 months after release date like the Note 3. I'm going to miss my record button during phone calls =(

They are all rooted.

I will smash this phone into the ground if it doesn't get root.
Tmobile Note 4 has root currently. Unfortunately it trips the Knox counter in the process.
Adaway is a must, I used my wifes phone and has no idea how many ads there actually where
I am treating the delay as a positive, since if root is not available for US models, I will not get the N4. Need root to allow external storage writes and do NOT trust Google that they will leave the function enabled in Lollipop. Not the slightest.
If no root, will stay with the S4 32GB a while longer, but still a fine device that is rooted and I do have card writes enabled.

No offense since just asking. Why is it good news for devices not the N4 being rooted since this thread would inherently be for the N4?
The S4, S5 and N3 all are easy to root, but other than a trend, does not mean much for the N4 (besides not a negative trend)
Forgot about needing adaway. Another reason to have root!

Because we assume that the S5 and N4 are going to be very similar on the software side. If the S5 has root there is a very good possibility that the N4 will also get root. Not guaranteed but good chance.

Eventually maybe. It's important to keep in mind that the note 4 uses a 3.10 Linux kernel while all previous phones (s4, s5, n3) used 3.4 Linux kernel. Meaning if a new exploit for S5 is found it doesn't mean it would work for the Note 4 while it's likely to work on s4, and note 3.
looks like the tmobile note 4 already has root. I hope that same method works for verizon
How did they root the TM? I am curious if Towel Root will root the Note4 since it roots so many different phones including the Note3.

Towel root won't root the note 4 it hasn't had a update since June it's no longer supported and has been patch with newer kernels. As for t-mobile it was root by Chainfire who is very popular for finding root methods for us.

He'll probably do it for the VZW as well. I can live with just root and since Hashcode quit Safestrap I'm sure root will be all it will get.
I don't mind TW.
Might be time to look at the Nexus again.
Sure no one knows at this point, but would it be best to ignore any updates that come out (I know I am glad I did not take any with my note 2 as I was lucky to get my phone unlocked with the release version). Another question I have is once its rooted how hard is it to keep root after updates?

He says in his post he won't -- the VZW locked Bootloader makes the phone brick when rooted. No one has ever gotten past the bootloader for the Note 3 yet! Hopefully a Developer version lurks...
There is an OTA already. I wonder if it will make rooting harder. Does anyone know if chainfire has started to try to root our N4?
Sure hope that is not the case, because I don't see me giving up my note 2 until this one is root-able. I am actually seriously considering cancelling my pre-order (which is full price to keep my UDP) and all my accessories that have yet to ship. Basically everything that I really care to do with my phone is somewhere tied into me being able to use xposed modules, wireless tether, etc...

Are you looking to get a carrier S8+ or an unlocked one? If carrier then bootloader will be locked down just like on the S7/S7 Edge. Your best bet is to get an unlocked Exynos one if you're hoping to be able to root & flash.

Yeah s7e martphone 2016 -> s8 smartphone 2017 ????
I too have the Nexus 6P and I've already ordered my S8+. Much like most, my battery life tanked. So I replaced the battery and it's about 75-80% of what it was brand new. I'm really looking forward to the water proofing, screen, Samsung Pay, and camera. I'll probably keep the Nexus 6P around for flashing and tinkering, but the S8+ will be my daily driver! Gonna be a real challenge going from Nexus, root, etc, back to locked down AT&T bloat but I think I can cope! I hope so at least.
I'm looking to switch!
I was about to pre-order the S8+ from samsung and then the agent told me there was no unlocked version!. I'm on simple mobile and i don't know if t-mobile would be willing to unlock their version if I'm not their direct customer. Any thoughts?

Would be interesting why you 'hate' 8.1. What's worse in comparison to 7.0? There are a lot of users that haven't updated for several reasons (like me) and it would be helpful to know what isn't that good or is so bad to hate it? Most users report a similar battery usage so what's it?
If you want to revert you can't go to 7.1 as there was only 7.0 for Potter.
Imho, you have to fastboot flash the latest 7.0 firmware, make a backup of everything before you do so (system, data, persist, EFS etc).
Flash 7.0 firmware, stop the update service and you should be good to go.

This is the single reason I've had it with Motorola. I could not stand this either, and so I unlocked the bootloader and got twrp/magisk ready to flash a new ROM with every feature I want. I'm done with the selective features they provide.
Night mode is actually good for your sleep, yet they give you attentive display to burn your eyes out...rather than a filter to help you at night.

Agreed, 100% man. Honestly the only thing they have going for themselves right now, is the fact that this is one of the best phones for rooting and custom roms. Thankfully there is plenty of support from developers, otherwise we would all be doomed with Moto support.

Just curious, did you every try to unlock your bootloader? I thought they either came up with a different root method, or I thought I even read some people got lucky and were able to unlock it through Moto's website (although that was early on).
But I feel your pain, me being cheap (saving the $50), ordered the fiance the z3 play Amazon variant... I'm very tempted to see what Amazon will charge me to swap it for an unlocked version. I just can't rely on the future with Moto...
On a side note, I wish we could just flash the full unlocked software channel, then take control...via fastboot/adb. Sure would be nice.
