Going back to nougat from oreo - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Ok so basically I hate 8.1 and want to revert back to 7.1. Only problem is that I think it's impossible with the Amazon variant of the Moto g5 plus. Can someone point me in the right direction??

Would be interesting why you 'hate' 8.1. What's worse in comparison to 7.0? There are a lot of users that haven't updated for several reasons (like me) and it would be helpful to know what isn't that good or is so bad to hate it? Most users report a similar battery usage so what's it?
If you want to revert you can't go to 7.1 as there was only 7.0 for Potter.
Imho, you have to fastboot flash the latest 7.0 firmware, make a backup of everything before you do so (system, data, persist, EFS etc).
Flash 7.0 firmware, stop the update service and you should be good to go.

For me the main issue is with WiFi, it keeps on dropping and its annoying. Would suggest you not to update just yet.

This is the single reason I've had it with Motorola. I could not stand this either, and so I unlocked the bootloader and got twrp/magisk ready to flash a new ROM with every feature I want. I'm done with the selective features they provide.
Night mode is actually good for your sleep, yet they give you attentive display to burn your eyes out...rather than a filter to help you at night.

Yeah I think Lenovo messed Moto up. This is gonna be the last Moto phone I ever buy. Luckily there are other mid-range phones with similar specs on the market

Agreed, 100% man. Honestly the only thing they have going for themselves right now, is the fact that this is one of the best phones for rooting and custom roms. Thankfully there is plenty of support from developers, otherwise we would all be doomed with Moto support.
I'm just kicking myself for waiting this long to begin with, in hopes Moto turned around...LOL

Well i was cheap and bought the Amazon variant with the locked bootloader lol so at least you don't have it as bad as me. Next phone I buy has to have an unlocked bootloader, be CDMA and gsm friendly.

Just curious, did you every try to unlock your bootloader? I thought they either came up with a different root method, or I thought I even read some people got lucky and were able to unlock it through Moto's website (although that was early on).
But I feel your pain, me being cheap (saving the $50), ordered the fiance the z3 play Amazon variant... I'm very tempted to see what Amazon will charge me to swap it for an unlocked version. I just can't rely on the future with Moto...
On a side note, I wish we could just flash the full unlocked software channel, then take control...via fastboot/adb. Sure would be nice.

[Europe] Bootloader Discussion

So i receive many questions about this via PM and other topics as i have a good contact with ZTE so i thought I'd create one where you guys can post your comments.
Ive raised this topic to them and they are discussing it. I will keep this main post updated with what i hear.
Update 05/01/17
Official Bootloader Unlock is coming. It was delayed through there not being a great process to release it and the various updates the ZTE have provided to fix bugs. I am still on a root version of b03 and there is a stock b09 version currently. However, the root version i was given is great and works flawlessly. Ive been promised that another root release is coming very soon and will become official.
Potential EU Bootloader Unlock - Needs testers! Thanks @DrakenFX:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
Why did USA get a bootloader unlock?
> The phone has been released to the open market there and under USA law they can remove the warranty if a bootloader is requested. From what i have read/understand in EU they have to commit to their warranty no matter what.
> It was all decided hastily internally within the USA team without contacting the worldwide team, neither had a clue of what each other was doing, but due to my efforts it looks like they are communicating.
> ZTE promise they dont want to discriminate.
What is happening with the EU?
It is coming. You wont lose warranty.
i got my Axon 7 today in germany from Saturn and in the dev menu i had the option for OEM Bootloader unlock, i thought european weren't supposed to have that?

Even doesn't do anything on his own when enable, is needed when official bootloader unlock arrive.
thought a fastboot oem unlock would suffice, but didn't try it yet.
But that they kept that option there is just pure torture
What ZTE should realize regarding the bootloader unlock is that they have 2 options to build trust with the customers, especially considering last year's Axon has not received Marshmallow and will not receive Marshmallow (at some point customer service said it would, which makes the whole thing even worse).
Either let people unlock the bootloader and provide long term software support through the dev community or promise updates for at least 2 years. Buying what is essentially a flagship device (and *the* flagship of ZTE) and then possibly not receiving anything beyond Nougat (which I expect them to deliver at the very least because of Daydream) would be a huge letdown. I can accept that with <200€ phones, whose hardware probably doesn't really hold up anyways after 2 years, but I expect more from a 400€ phone that is the top of the line from that brand. This holds true especially considering that the other two big competitors in the same price range (the OP3 and the Honor 8) do provide at least one of those assurances. So far, the Axon 7 does not and that's worrisome given both some of the flaws in the current software (notification bell, video playback issues etc) and their own history with last year's Axon.
Bad news but it is starting to look unlikely in Europe that we will get a bootloader unlock. They will try to give us an official confirmation via social media soon.

if there's no new info about the bootloader untill the end of next week it's gonna get returned.
not gonna gamble on someone maaayyybe finding an exploit in a year...
Oh well, they better rethink this or OP3 it is. Been on the edge the whole time. But wanted to give it a go due to the cool hardware. I can still cancel that order on the Axon and will probably do that as soon as this get official.
Please help me.
We have the US version with the 20B update from which you can unlock your boot loader with the 20B_boot update.
One guy has flashed the b02 version for the Europe devices on his A2017U US phone. Correct?
Can't we flash the 20B version to our Europe A2017G phones and unlock them with the 20b_boot version?
Can't we check which files and how the boot update changed the boot loader and do it some way manually on our phones?

Not really -- the OTAs are block level patches, not file patches. Someone would have to dump and compare the partitions before and after. The system image would probably be easy, fastboot is provided as a full image, but for the other images (boot and recovery), you'd have to dive into the assembly and/or tear apart the kernel.
I'm actually kinda glad they decided to **** europe over with the bootloader. I was on the fence whether to buy the P8 Plus or wait for the Axon 7.
Now I don't have to worry about this anymore, ZTE made the decision so much easier
The P8 has the better battery and camera anyhow. Cheers to everybody

Thats your choice.
The Axon 7 has better screen and sound anyhow which matters to me. Pretty solid phone for the price even without an unlocked bootloader. Theres already root so cant really complain, what do you expect for a £360 phone!
They didnt really **** europe with the bootloader, it was never guaranteed or announced. But glad your decision is made easier.
The 3 year warranty with the axon 7 was too good to pass on

All valid points. But no unlocked bootloader = no custom roms = no buy, simple as that.
Especially with a company with a bad or at very least doubtful reputation to provide software updates for a reasonably long/adequate period.
But as you say, that's my choice. And from what I can tell many others will make the same choice. Owning an Android is all about freedom of choice and customization, especially for people her on XDA (obviously). I do like the phone but I don't necessarily like the software on it, or at least not all of it.
I would go for the One+ 3, but no SD card slot = no buy.
I have owned enough android phones to know what I consider essential features and I buy my phones accordingly.
And I actually consider a 1440p screen on a phone a slight negative due to increased power consumption while I gain nothing with higher pixel density (not interested in using mobile VR).
Sound is better, true, but I listen exclusively with headphones so nice speakers are a bonus. My Bluetooth speaker still has better sound

I think 1080p is an absolutely fine resolution for 5.5", but 1080p PenTile? Eh. Not quite hitting the mark for me.

Quick question about root status and bootloader

Sorry about making a thread I just need quick ask something. I wasn't really looking for a new phone but I jumped on the Pixel deal for $10 a month from best buy. The fact that I can unlock the bootloader got me excited cause there's a lot of development for it.
I haven't received it yet but part of me wonders if I should go with the s7 instead. I like the build better I feel it's mor e durable and it's also waterproof/resistant which the Pixel is not.. I've never really gotten my S5 wet but it's scaring me..
So if I get an s7 and it has whatever the latest build is.. is it rootable as of now?? I'm guessing the bootloader is locked like ever other Verizon phone?? By the time the s5 bootloader was unlocked there weren't many devs left.
Thanks!!

If you get one now it'll have marshmallow on it and will be rootable using the engboot method. If you do so be sure to install the fixes and mods available here on xda. I would rather have a pixel personally.
Root method not really good. Bootloader is locked. Not worth rooting on this phone in my opinion. I had a lot of issues even after tweaking and following some guides. This was before the 2 roms were released though i haven't tried those out.
I'm on stock nougat beta also and i love it.

I love my S7. I've rooted and unrooted. Currently I've updated it to Nougat with the Update.zip. It's running beautifully!
But I got a Pixel for my wife, and I would trade mine for hers any day of the week.
I've never gotten a phone wet, so that wouldn't be a concern for me.
I had an S7 before getting my Pixel and unfortunately for me I NEED root. The S7 root method is FAR from perfect and it just affects the phones performance and battery life too much so I went with the Pixel instead where I can have root and an unlocked bootloader. The S7 by itself is a great phone, and if I didn't need root I would have kept it but if you are like me and want/need root then I'd keep the Pixel.

Anyone getting updates on 64GB USA?

I'm confused about what update is out and for which phone model? My device has been acting a bit finicky at times...
I have build NPN25.137-33
Please provide link to update if ones available to flash manually (non rooted).
BTW anyone notice that retailers are already discontinuing carrying this phone?
I think the G5S is literally about to be released. Seems a bit odd. Also kind of sucks that this phone will be outdated so quickly...
I'm on day 7 of owning this... Should I return it?
I'd like to know myself!
I'm happy so far, owned for a month, nice upgrade from my moto e.
There is a TWRP flashable of the -67 update, works great on the US 64gig version

The new Motorola phone is the Moto Z Play 2, not a G Series phone. Z Series is more expensive (guessing $150 more), but with better features. Also not yet available for retail sale.

Yes...saw all that. Nothing about an actual release date yet though. All still rumors and leaks. I was more focused on something available now, which was what the tangent discussion was about. Sorry for any confusion on my part.
No worries. I do think it'll be released soon. None of the best buys in my city are carrying any version. That's over 10 best buys. So if put money on it releasing this month.
I decided to go ahead and return this though. Kind of frustrated that it only has a January security patch, and still 7.0, despite it being released in February....
Got a cool deal on Swappa for $280 on a mint Axon 7 today. They've been getting regular updates, and have a great dev community!
Specs are much better too. I do love the fingerprint navigation on this Moto though. I'll miss that!
I just got mine at my local Costco the week before last, and their return policy is 60 days, so...
Crazy how this phone has only been out for a few months and Moto is already putting out a new phone. That's way to fast.
Back to the original question, has anyone in the US got the over the air update? I always root but I'm not ready yet. I'm hoping the new update-67 will fix some bugs and update the security.

Like it or not, Lenovo is horrible with updates, probably one of the worst of the "big" name brands in the last 18-24 months.

Thats nowt, my daughters Moto G4 has just had a repair while still in its first year of warranty and they aren't even updating that to Oreo and there is no reason they cant other than to try to get you to buy a new phone from there overly bloated product line up. Google should force makers to provide updates for 18 months after a product goes EOL.
Worst thing Google did was to sell the Motorola brand to Lenovo, great handsets but shocking support these days.
This is exactly why mine is up for sale now. Needed an ugent replacement after my NExus 5x did it's stuff. As a phone it does what it should (apart from compass!!!!! I mean...why????) anyway, I now have a Wileyfox which doesnt feel as solid but is up to date and a damn sight more hackable. Shows a desperate lack of understanding of Android users from Lenovo / Motorola. We tend to be fickle and need either updating or letting us hack the bugger.
Sad really. Still wont go over to the dark side though
FYI, I used the Toolkit you can find on XDA to update to the latest version for potter found on androidfilehost.

Hmm, not sure - the roll out for both G5S plus and G5 Plus Oreo have both been soak tests so far. I've not seen a mention of a general release so far.
It could be that Motorola are working on the Oreo update for our devices, I imagine we're not the highest priority at the moment, since we already had our major update. Still, let's see what happens.

NO! We didn't. When I bought the device, it was mentioned in all promotional material that we will get guaranteed Android N and O updates. Though, there was no time frame mentioned, but this is ridiculous that we have to wait so long. I'm never gonna recommend a Moto device again, just because of updates, which was the USP for recommendations.
I am not sure when will Motorola ever speak about G4(+) as in their Oreo upgrade plan this device was missing at first. Then on reddit people made posts with promo materials showing promises and they just included the device in their list I believe several months ago. So, they never intended to upgrade it, and who knows they ever will.

The major update was nougat that this device received already(echo92 is correct). At the beginning it was shipped with marshmallow. Seems you bought the device while those promo materials were discussed around the world
You'll find already a lot of threads in this device forum discussing the Oreo topic.

This would be correct for any vendor that promises one major upgrade and had a history of doing so. But, Motorola was choice of many due to consistent security updates and at least 2 major upgrades, and not just that, they actually said that. So, you are right they gave one major update out of promised 2, but I didn't mean that I bought the device with Nougat.
My purchase date was 20-May-2016 which was the Amazon-exclusive launch date in India and got it in my hand on 21-May-2016. I have the device with one of my family members now as I upgraded to a different device.
Luring the updates and making customer buy due to that reason and denying or delaying later is not done. We don't have very strict consumer protection law here, otherwise there definitely would have been an update

Nokia all the way. Really, they have very good phones, decently priced with the majority of them running Android One. If my G4 Plus were to die now, I'd probably get a Nokia 7 Plus or a 6.1.

Nokia do seem to be a good choice, one of the things I'm not keen on is their lack of an official bootloader unlock program. Granted, you can pay for an unlock key (to whom?) and the increasing security measures (e.g. Safetynet) are making unlocking more of a hassle, just at the moment there's not much support for custom ROMs or TWRP.
