I am currently on 2.3. And I was thinking of updating to 2.3.1 but can someone please explain is it safe and stable??? And pls someone explain what are the actual updates in 2.3.1 over the 2.3.0. I have heard that there is improvement in browser (like less lag in scrolling etc.) Is it as smooth as iphone? Can someone confirm it? And should i go for the update?

C'mon guys, can anyone here just answer my question? What are the exact changes from 2.3.0 to 2.3.1, and is it worth upgrading? Coz i will only update if there is no lag in browser after that. Coming from iphone 4 i see a significant lag in the browser otherwise the phone is quite good and lives up to the hype. A quick and thorough reply will be highly appreciated.
Also suggest me some good exclusive android apps, if possible.

All reports say that its just bug fixes and updates Google Maps to version 5.
More specifically Paul @ MoDaCo says about the update, "Super quick Nexus S OTA update (GRH78) analysis -changes to framework.jar, kernel and Maps.apk. That's about it."
That's about as specific as you're going to get short of Google publishing an official changelog.

Since I have updated to 2.3.1 I have a lot of apps missing from the market. I would read the thread about missing apps before I update. It is 4 days later and they are still missing.
Google has their work cut out for them; there are a slew of bugs/issues/glitches with Gingerbread. Looking forward to 2.3.2.
I am new to the Nexus line (in other words, I never owned a Nexus One); how often do these minor updates get sent out? The 2.3.x ones.
Thanks for the replies at last guys. My main concern with 2.3.1 is the bugs associated with it, like missing apps from market and stuff. And i wanted to know more about such issues before upgrading. I am new to Nexus S and even with Android as an OS. I am quite impressed with it as a platform but i must say it's not as smooth of an experience as iphone, these small glitches and bugs are quite annoying to say the least.
I think as a general rule with a vanilla Android phone, if reliability is your main concern, incremental updates are probably a good thing, but you may want to think twice about going to a new version of the OS. That's the trouble with being on the cutting edge, you're liable to get wounded. I expect it'll be several updates yet before all the kinks in Gingerbread are worked out.
My main issues with Gingerbread are the random ringtone changes, difficulty in moving app icons on the home screen, sometimes disappearing icons after attempting to move them, some scrolling lag/issues, weird gallery issues like missing photos or photos in odd orders, etc.
These are recurring issues that primarily only happen with Gingerbread - for example, I can move app icons perfectly fine with AWD.
Gingerbread needs far more bug fixed than what 2.3.1. brought.
I just got my Nexus S today and also have the missing media bug in the gallery! Twice it's happened where there'd be nothing displayed in my gallery apart from the last picture taken with the camera! Only hard restarts have solved this so far...
I've updated and not seen any problems so far.

I just would like to share my experience of moving from the stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean to the CM10 release, mostly for people who are still using stock 4.1.2 because I couldn't find such a thread before jumping to CM10.
I installed the 5th November nightly release of CM10 as the more recent ones (including the "stable" release) have an annoying problem : the Play Store reports some incompatibilities with apps which were working fine with the stock 4.1.2. It seems that this problem is due to the lack of free memory with the newest CM10 releases ...
The 11/05 CM10 was the last one with no Play Store problems, you can download it here for the Wingray :

EDIT : on the 6th December, I updated my Xoom from the 11/05 nightly to the 12/05 nightly, and so far I still didn't have the Play Store compatibility issue, which means the problem has been solved in between these two releases ...
Performances :
I must admit that I didn't think it was possible that a custom ROM was better optimized than the one made by Google itself ...
I was very happy with the fluidity of the stock 4.1.2, but when I used CM10 for the first time, I tried some websites known to be a bit laggy with the stock browser, and they were just close to perfect about fluidity with CM10 ! I couldn't find a laggy website with stock browser yet ... These tests were not involving overclocking.
So I then ran Quadrant and had a score of 2800, where I had 1900 with stock 4.1.2 ... !
I then overclocked the Xoom to 1,5 GHZ, and Quadrant reported a score of 4100, about equal to the Transformer Prime !
I don't really play with my Xoom but I tried to play to GTA III, and when overclocked, compared to the stock 4.1.2, I could put a lot more graphical details with a better fluidity. I really felt like using a whole new device. But most of the time I don't use overclocking as I want to save my battery life, and the overall fluidity of the Xoom running CM10 at 1GHz is very good.
A few people reported they found a performances increase with the very last nightly release. However, as it still have some compatibility problems with the Play Store, I will not jump on it.
I don't know if Cyanogen will try to solve this incompatibility issue as it maybe related to the Gapps taking too much storage space, and Cyanogen does not support Gapps ...
Updates :
I choosed a Cyanogen rom (instead of EOS) because with this one you can easily update to newer ROM release very easily, without the need to connect your Xoom to the PC, and without loosing datas : CM10 includes an update manager which proceeds just like an official Google OTA ! That's just perfect to me, I'm not sure if this does also exist on EOS, I couldn't find any informations about this.
So I have the feeling that my Xoom is still supported and updated, which is very good. Thanks a million to Cyanogen team !
Bugs :
I couldn't find bugs yet on the 11/05 release, I just had an unexpected reboot the very first time I used it, only after 5 minutes of use. Since then, I never had this problem again (3 days with no reboots for now).
Features :
I didn't try all of them yet, but there are plenty of cool features :
- overclocking ability with multiple policies possible to save battery life for exemple, or for the best performances all the time.
- other performances tweaks about RAM like "KSM" use, and some other parameters which allow better performances but lowering the battery life.
- root of course !
- the ability to light the charging LED, even when your Xoom is powered on.
- many many others, some I didn't tried/discovered yet.
So I am very happy now with CM10, and I would like to thanks Cyanogen again about this excellent work !
I would recommand to any stock 4.1.2 users to jump on to CM10, the Xoom will just be running better then !

TeamEOS has all the features you mentioned and you can update it easily as well. Don't need a computer, they use GooManager. In short they are both good ROMs, there is nothing to dislike about both of those ROMs, both teams have putted a lot of effort into optimising the XOOM and adding functions/features. It's all up to user preference, with CM ROMs I get random reboots, while TeamEOS I don't get any of that.

How polished is the root/rom procedure for the Xoom? I came from the Transformer world and it was pretty well dialed in..not a lot of monkeying around or knowledge required.
What's the easiest way to get root and a custom rom?

Idk, never rooted or used a Asus tablet. Once the Xoom is unlocked and rooted you really have no need for a PC unless you use fastboot & adb to flash, push, pull, etc.....

Definitely. I've used both ROMs, but struggled with SOD's on EOS Stable and lag on the nightlies! CM10 solved both of these issues for me. Both ROMs are full of features and and a no brainer compared with stock.

Thanks a lot, that's interesting. I was more and more thinking about trying the EOS ROM, but I was too lazy about reinstalling all my softwares and data ...
What do you mean by "SOD" ?
It's very interesting to have the feedbacks of people having tried both custom ROMs, it would be cool if some other people could give their opinion.

i have not tried EOS yet. CM10 runs absolutely flawless. I got a good 14hrs -/+ on the battery playing Deadzone, watching movings, browsing the net, skyping with my kids and I still have 28% left today. No OC. Having full R/W access to the External Sdcard is great. I now can Dropsync my folders from my Dropbox to the card for a quick handy on the go backup
EOS from what i have heard has some great features.....i will need to backup and give it a go here soon.

Yes it's very easy, considering this is a google experience device all you really have to do is unlock it, flash in recovery and then using recovery flash in another ROM. You should have zero problems at all, considering the bootloader is unlocked.
Can anyone please tell me if one of the december CM10 nightly did solve the Play Store incompatibility problem ?

If you never had this problem, this means you may not be using the CM10 Gapps but the EOS one, or you just didn't realize that you actually have a compatibility issue with the Play Store ... It's easy, check the application named "eye in sky weather", if the store says that it's not compatible with your device, it means that you're facing the compatibility issue as this application is in fact compatible with the Xoom. Of course this problem is not only for this application, there are many others which are reported as not compatible ...

I am using the latest nightly. In fact i have used all the December nightlies with no issues.
As far as gapps, i have used that lastest gapps 4.1.2 and i have tried gapps 4.2+. I used the gapps posted in the link on first page of this thread both packages i have experienced no issues, market is working fine, no incompatibilities.
As far as my comment about aking your questions.....ask in one place....no need to ask your question in every forum are start a new thread.....i was not being rude, it is in the forums rules.......

Also, check your dpi settings....that will cause market issues. Search the forums & google the fix is simple...
Also try manual installing an older marker version or try or KDH 4.2 gapps.
These are all solutions to your issue(s). No one else may try and answer you question because they are not having or no longer have these issues.......what i posted above are the steps to fix the issue.

Thanks for these informations, I'll check this. But for now I have no problems with the market as I am using the 11/05 release. The problem came after this release and was known to be due to a free memory issue (check my first post of this thread). That's why I was asking if a recent release of CM10 did solve this problem.
EDIT : I just jumped from 11/05 nightly to 12/05, and I still have no problems with the Play Store, which means the Play Store compatibility problem has been solved in between these two releases ... Great news !

Thanks man, that's what I needed to migrate, a good experience report.
I heard about incompatibilities, also that some apps won't work, but I can manage that. I'm now going to make a backup of my things and this weekend I want to install CM10. The main problem now is the backup, since I have a lot of things on it, both the internal memory and SD are quite full. XD
The most surprising thing is that I could not find any report about this bug correction, which was a very annoying bug, but I could find plenty of threads talking about this problem and trying to find workaround solutions ... None of them reported this bug does not exist anymore ...

I had similar random rebooting issues using the CM9 ROMs on my tablet which is why I use Team EOS. Both ROMs do have similar features and it comes down to user preference and which UI you prefer.. but BOTH are quality software and greatly appreciated!
Hi, I'm a new nexus 7.2 WI-FI owner, coming from an old Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9 with CM10.1.2
I've been playing with the stock ROM for a week now and I'm happy. I'm wondering if I'm missing anything staying in stock. My old galaxy nexus phone is also on CM10.2, haven't tried any Rom other than CM.

Since the new Nexus 7 is Google's flagship device, they push out the latest release of the Android OS very quickly (first to get it). You have to ask yourself what's to be gained by using a custom ROM? Most folks who use them on their phones its to eliminate bloatware and run a later Android OS than their carrier has pushed out. The Nexus 7 Wi-Fi model doesn't have carrier loaded bloatware and you have the latest OS already. I run the stock ROM rooted . . . it's all I need.

I haven't rooted nor installed customized ROM yet but what I'm missing about cm is the little customizable things such as options and layout of quick notification tiles, quiet hours, DSP manager, etc. Also very looking forward to the day some Dev can unleash the cellular function of the LTE version,
If you want some additional features like customizable shortcuts, HALO, lock screen shortcuts, PIE or something else, flash some other ROM. If you're a Nexus 7 WIfi owner, then it's not a big problem to choose one. There's a lot of them for FLO (32GB, Wi-fi). I'm personally using PAC Rom and ElementalX kernel, but it's just because I like Paranoid Android and AOKP features. If you don't want a lot of customizing, find something else, possibly lighter, faster, more battery efficient. Or simply use CM 10.2. And if going to settings to change Wifi state doesn't get on your nerves, you did rooting and want your device to run fast and have the latest OS, stay on stock.
I'm waiting for kitkat, so i figured if i root now, ill have to wait until someone gets the source and provide a flashable update. I'm originally from the Philippines but i stay in Ireland for 2 more months for a client im working with now. I bought the device in Dublin so I hope I get the update earlier than if i was in asia.
I actually miss being rooted and able to block annoying ads but i guess after the kitkat update I'll root immediately.

I am stock, rooted. I really haven't seen the need for anything else at this point. I DO think rooting needs to be done, if for nothing else that Titanium Backup. Plus, I think it is silly to have a device that you don't have access to the file system. Kinda like installing Linux without the "su" function.

True that. But like Apple, Google is protecting the masses, aka non tech people, from breaking their own devices. Only knowledgeable people should root their devices.

You can do most of this on stock with Xposed Framework.
Using pandroid no problems or lock ups yet.

Not everyone experiences lockups. In fact, when everything works, people usually stay quiet.

I would think people are more likely to go the custom rom route because they wish to have more control over their devices, as in more settings/options. Then add in some of the cool additions rooms have.
Though some can be mimicked via apps.
Just the stock ROM; not rooted yet.

Been using Carbon. I really like it and the nightlies have been very stable for me so far.
I'm running the latest PAC man ROM with elemental X kernel.
There actually is a lot to be gained... With this custom kennel I have double tap the screen to wake, swipe to sleep.
With PAC man you can also use the PA gapps to customize the colors of the apps. Also has swipe the top of the screen to adjust brightness. There are several themes as well. I run the PAC in black theme that comes with the ROM.
Just a few reasons why I prefer a custom ROM over the stock rooted rom

I'm using AOKP and plan on staying with it. There wasn't anything wrong with the stock rom and I considered staying with it, its' the first android device where I wasn't unhappy with something. The reason I use AOKP is mainly because of how easy it is to theme it. Literally hundreds of options and changing the theme is like getting a new rom without the hassle of changing rom's. It's nice to have something new to look at when you get bored, plus I like all the rom control options like changing the battery icon and clock position and color.
Plus with this device its soooo easy to go back to stock I am not afraid of having any issues if I ever want to unroot and update.
I'm using AOKP, stable tablet ui with no need of changing dpi settings, adding 7 buttons to the navbar and customizing them.
Also use Carbon, for the lots and lots of features.

The "[ROM][WT88047][M][6.0.x] CyanogenMod unofficial builds" is really reliable.
I have been using it extensively since it was initially released... and now it works really smooth.
The only bug which may hamper (but not that much) the daily use I still have in my 20140811 version using 20160108 ROM's version is:
- Robot voice (not understandable) when I activate the loudspeaker on Voip/Skype;
I saw this was fixed with later versions but in my phone, those version make difficult to connect to Bluetooth.
therefore I am waiting foe next releases.

I've commented in other threads, but once again - a **** - up of colossal proportions from Sony. The Marshmallow update was released 5 months after Google pushed it to its nexus devices, now it will be 6 months at minimum.

Same here have used since they pushed it out, have not noticed any issues what so ever. very stable, battery life lasting longer than before. music and SD card working perfectly fine for me.

I also use Customized AU nougat and i have no any problem with phone,everythings work great.
Same here, but I downladed and flashed Phillipines version
nothing buggy on mine with clean install Cust. AU. just 3rd party apps which uses own or sony's equalizer has a little lower sound. and it can be PATCHED with minor update. that isnt explain why they roll back update.
